Note: I am not a member of Bellevue Baptist church, but am a frequent attender of programs in their Women's ministry and have attended Worship services there. (I live in another county)

One of the concerns many people have when they think of Mega-Churches (ones with thousands of memnbers) is that they will get lost in the shuffle. This is a real danger, but will only happen at Bellevue Baptist if you try. I will breifly comment on the church as a whole and go into more detail on their Women's Ministry and children's ministry where most of my experience lies.

Overall Bellevue is a very large church- getting around if you are unfamiliar with the building requires a guide, comfortable shoes and a little prayer! Luckily there is someone around every corner to help newcomers and navigation becomes easy once you are there a few times. The beliefs and practices of the congregation are very conservative (Baptist) and dress on Sunday morning leans toward what you would think of typical dress for the average church- slacks, polo shirts, ties etc for men and nice slacks, skirts or dresses for the ladies. The worship leans toward very traditional and solid Biblical principles are taught from the pulpit.

My experience over the last 2 years has been primarily through the women's ministry and as a result through the children's ministry as well with my preschool age son. You do not have to be a member to participate in Women or Children's ministries at Bellevue.

I have attended many weekday Bible-Studies on both Tuesday and Thursdays. Tuesdays are geared toward women in general, and there are many different topics to choose from. Studies vary from topics on Godly Wives, Sewing for Children, Senior Ladies' Bible Studies. Studies may begin in a large group lecture (live or recorded) then typically break off into smaller groups for discussion and prayer. Thursdays are geared toward Moms and studies are led by the always witty, insightful and energetic Jean Stockdale. Small group occurs first then dismisses to large group in the chapel when Jean speaks. Small groups are typically divided up by the age of your children. Materials for all studies are provided with a modest fee for the study- usually $5 or $10 per semester.

Childcare is provided free of charge during the study. Children are divided up by ages and all kids are typically within a couple of months of each other's age. The kids are in age appropriate environments. Preschoolers are taken often to the indoor playground to play and burn off energy on the age appropriate equipment there. Younger children (toddlers) are often taken on wagon rides through the halls in a big caravan! They do crafts and have snack (you provide lunch or snack) and pretty much enjoy their time as much as you. Each small group takes 1 time a semester to volunteer in the nursery to supplement the regular nursery staff that is present.

I have also attended various special events in the evening (Bible Studies, conferences, holiday programs). I have found the members to be very friendly and willing to help in any way they can. As a stay at home mom in a rural area, I have really appreciated the ability to meet with other ladies who share similar beliefs, challenges and situations.

I would also like to mention that there is a great diversity among the ladies that attend these events. There are many nationalities, races, denominational backgrounds and family situations. The common denominator is that they are all seeking God.

So, don't let the huge exterior of the church deterr you from getting involved in a small group study! Bellevue has lots to offer if you choose to get involved!

PROS: Small group studies, conferences- childcare included with registration!
CONS: huge environment may feel overwhelming
