A man of taste and multi-talents, Jack Cawthon first began in the food service business as Cawthon's Caterer, Inc. in 1976. While catering to Nashville's social functions over the years, Cawthon found there was a void in "good Nashville barbecue," and so began his homework. Jack Cawthon started Jack's Bar-B-Que and is currently located only 10 steps from the back stage door of the Historic Ryman. Seven days a week, Jack's Bar-B-Que proudly serves Tennessee pork shoulder, Texas beef brisket, smoked turkey, Texas sausage, St. Louis ribs, smoked chicken and heapings of other Southern cuisine.

In Short
With pink-neon flying pigs flanking its sign, this barbecue joint is easy to spot among the lower Broadway eateries. Get in line at the back of the casual, cozy dining room to get your paper plate loaded up with pulled pork, ribs and sides. The pork shoulder is tender and smoky and the beef brisket is moist and peppery. There's also macaroni and cheese and green beans--pretty much the only actual vegetable on the menu.

great pork

by Janell W. | top100 Top100 | Rank: 29

Great Pork Shoulder. Portions are huge. Great that they have like six different barbeque sauces to chose from to get a well rounded education. Cole slaw was lighter vinegar-based instead of mayo. Baked beans flavorful but a bit runny. Green beans looked cooked beyond recognition. Corn bread was distinctive and moist. I wished they had more inspired sides like fried okra and sweet potatoes.

awsome bbq

by Holly H. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 201

We heard from more than one source that this is the authentic barbecue joint, a must-do in Nashville. We're talking very casual here with absolutely no frills. However, the food is outstanding. A guy took a big foil-covered piece of pork from the oven, removed the bone, and chopped it up for sandwiches. Mmmm, good!

Best BBQ EVER!!! And service is awesome

by Chasa

I went to Jack's my first time today. I'm so glad I went because it is literally the best bbq I have ever put in my mouth! I pulled up to the drive thru window and after the lady ran my card, it was declined. I had ordered the family pack so it wasn't cheap. The lady said not to worry and she took care of it. It was one of the kindest things anyone has ever done for me and my family. This is such a wonderful place and the staff is amazing. I'm a customer for life and it's worth the drive!

Pros: Everything

Cons: None

At the beginning of the month, I spent my first time in Nashville and
ate at your establishment. This was, by far, the best meal I have
ever had while traveling! The food was excellent and I would highly
recommend it to anyone.
Thank you for making my first experience in Nashville a great one!
I look forward to returning!

Pros: Excellent food

Best Meat on the Planet!

by SmokeyMeatLover

The meat-man Jack Cawthon knows his pits and how to barbeque the best meat on the planet. I?m addicted to the 3-way (no that?s not a chili-dish) a ?pick-3-meats? platter? My favorites are brisket, ribs and chicken. Once you go Jack?s ? you never go back ? to another barbequer that is! There?s not a pit in Nashville that smokes like Jack?s and he has the awards to prove it. No doubt ? Jack Cawthon has the best meat in Nashville ? hands down. Love your meat Jack!

Pros: Best smoked meat in Nashville!

Cons: No cons - perfect meat

Best Bar-B-Que and Friendly Service

by AlanTreadway

I have loved bar-b-que my entire life. That being said, I would have to say that the bar-b-que at Jack's is by the best that I have ever had. Originally, a friend of mine recommended this restaurant for lunch, when I was downtown for lunch one time. Since then, I have been hooked on the food and friendly service.

Anytime I am downtown for either business or an event, I have to go to eat at Jack's. In fact, when have to head north of the city on I-65; I will make it a point to get off at the West Trinity Lane exit to eat at their other location.

The most astonishing part of their restaurant for me is that it is my 8 year old's favorite restaurant. Talk about a finicky eater. Prior to taking him to Jack's, he would only eat chicken fingers or McDonald's, when we went out to eat. Would you believe that this is now his favorite restaurant (AND HE LOVES THE VEGTABLES)? This is a miracle.

I would strongly recommend this restaurant for informal casual and/or business lunch (Trinity Lane), family outing, or anytime you go downtown (Broadway) for an event.

Pros: Tremendous Food

Best Bar B Que in Town!

by red53

Just getting out of the car and smelling the mouthwatering smoking meat is enough to make you sprint for the door! We live out of town and it is an absolute necessity that we eat Jack's Bar B Que at least once, if not more, when we are in Nashville. We keep trying other bar b que in Nashville , but Jack's still ranks at the top. Also, we have gone several times to down town and Trinity Lane locations, and prefer the Trinity Lane location as it is easier to get into.

Pros: Quick service from friendly staff.

Cons: Could be a bit of a wait at noon, but it's worth it.

if you can only go to one bbq joint go somewhere else

by jzad77

I would have to say not so good. Especially the one on trinity lane. The Downtown location is better. It is a bit overpriced for bbq. I would say there are a bunch of other bbq joints which are better in Nashville. Tex's is pretty good, bar b cutie is my fave and whitts is pretty much the bottom of the barrel. Look around there is better bbq. But it will do in a pinch.

Pros: its not that bad

Cons: its pricey for bbq

Not anywhere NEAR the best bbq in Nashville. Ordinary, in fact.

by london2k

No doubt about it, Jack's has charm, and the location is unbeatable. We DO go there, just because it is so handy....but the bbg is no better than "good". You CAN get really good ribs there...but more often then not they are pulled out too early and are tough and a bit chewy, from lack of adequate cooking. They do have an unusual and great Carolina mustard-based sauce, which is to their credit. The side dishes are pretty weak. The cornbread is downright vile, with the mac and cheese, beans, etc tasting no better than canned.

If it weren't right there on Broadway I can't imagine anyone making the trip. Not with Neely's in town, which really IS a great place.

Pros: VERY handy location

Cons: Food that is only average....at best

brisket was good

by Itravel2

My friend and I were in Nashville this past week and had lunch at Jack's. My beef brisket was excellent, tender, good flavor, and even better with sauce. My friend ordered the smoked turkey which was not very good at all. She did not eat it. The green beans were good, the macaroni & cheese was okay; a little mushy. The mild barbecue sauce was pretty good. The guys behind the counter were friendly. Our favorite thing here was the cornbread. In general, we were a little disappointed with the food; but at the same time we felt like we got a pretty authentic experience. If you decide to try it - I would just tell you not to order the turkey, everything else looked pretty good.

Pros: beef brisket, green beans, good value

Cons: smoked turkey

The best BBQ in Nashville

by smoothybobo

Hands down, Jack has the best quality meat, the best smoking process and the best sauce anywhere. I should say I recommend the brisket & the shoulder over the chicken & the ribs. The baked beans are sweet and delicious and go well with the potato salad. The pie is good too. It's cafeteria style so it's served fast. I like the texas toast but the cornbread is good too. It's on the sweet side, I know some folks don't like that but, I do.

Pros: quality, delicious, food, great people

Cons: none that I can, thin of - it's great!

Best BBQ - Others, Get Over It

by votequimby

I go there an average of 1.5 times a week - I should be able to claim Jack as a dependant. Everything is always excellent - especially with the hot sauce. Whiners who complain about nutritional value need to stick to nuts and twigs. You only live once - CARPE DIEM!!! And the Chess Pie...wait a minute...arterial blockage...okay, now that that's passed, I'm headed back to Jack's.

Pros: Ribs, Shoulder, Brisket

Cons: , Stretches Lunch Hour

Great food for a good price

by jeffrey1970

How many times can you go into a top rated restaurant, get seated quickly, eat good food, all for a good price. Well at Jack's Bar-B-Que you can. For just a bit over $11 I got a rack of ribs, a large drink, and some corn bread. The ribs were wonderful. The meat feel off of the bone. I figured since everyone told me that Jack's was one of Nashville's top restaurants that I would have to waite a while to get a seat on a saturday night, but I didn't. I should say it is a cafeteria style restaurant. Some people don't like that, but I do. You can get your food much quicker. I should also say the owner, Jack, seemed very nice when he said hello to me

Pros: Bar-B-Que Mmmmm, service, good price

Cons: wish I was eating it, now

Great Barbecue

by lauram

My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by Jack's Barbecue on Trinity Lane. I called in my order and was greeted very professionally and friendly. I was asked how long it would take for me to arrive so my food would be nice and fresh and hot. It was. The food was great. We had the chicken (falling off the bone), turkey and Texas beef brisket, cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, and the corn bread was very good. I would definitely recommend. They have different types of bb sauce from traditional to mild to spicy. I like the spicy! Enjoy.

Pros: Easy to find, clean, good parking

Best in a while

by steamroller

I love BBQ, and this place does it right. You can tell the meats have been slow smoked, and the server knows EXACTLY what he is doing. The vegetables were great, and the tea tasted fine. I have since suggested this eatery to others. DO try it! I know I'll be back.

BBQ For Losers

by mrneeze

Although Jack's has been around downtown and a few years on Trinity Lane, his BBQ has a long way to go if it's going to match up with the great "Q" in this state. The difference between Jack's & Tex's is about the same as McDonald's and Rotier's (or even Eddie's). And at that price, I think I'll just fire up the ol' grill.....

Pros: they aren't open 24/7

Cons: bland vegies, bland BBQ, stale chips

Jacks is sprates

by gracebobby

I was in Nashville last summer and we happen to just walk in this place on Broadway in the Music City section of town. It was the best BBQ we had while there, nothing fancy, paper plates and plastic forks but just good ole bbq. I would not miss this place for lunch when ever I get back to Nashville.

A nice view and great food!

by GMSLegion

I finally got to try Jack's on my twice-yearly trip to Nashville after getting distracted so many times. Wow! This is good pork, cooked just right, with lots of flavor. Of the sauces, I preferred the Tennessee and the Texas, which was just precisely sweet enough and hot. The potato salad was very good, but I can't recommend the slaw, which was too sweet. I'll get a different side next time. We sat upstairs, which has a very nice view, and listened to the VT-Miami game watching the foot traffic below. Highly recommended!

Very tasty

Unique. Great barbeque from mild to very hot. I buy the sauce in jars for cookouts at home and to make great chili.

Pros: You can buy BBQ Sauce, good for quick lunch

Cons: not for a nite out

You'll salivate like Pavlov's dogs

by celesteroberts

Like Pavlov's dogs, we start to salivate when we enter the door at Jack's BBQ. It's a craving that starts on Monday, and stays with you thoughout the week (if you can wait that long) until the weekend! The chicken is superb, the brisket is perfect, in fact, there is nothing I would NOT recommend. Ok, except the cornbread (a little dry). I would recommend the Texas toast instead. It's also a convenient place to stop when you're going downtown to party!

Pros: Brisket, Smoked flavor, Kansas City BBQ sauce

Cons: No parking, No parking, No parking

Pigs Fly Over Broadway

by TNHockeyGuy

Jack's is a Nashville instution. When The Hard Rock Cafe came to Nashville and displaced this local eatery it was a crime but luckily they only had to more up the street a bit. With the neon pigs flying over Broadway go in and fill up on some of the best barbque in the city.
