Embarrassing! As a German I went to this restaurant in hope to get some home food. All I get was embarrassment. It is a shame that they sell this food as German food and even worse that the Americans think that is German food.

The food is NOT authentic German, it's what Taco bell is to Mexican food.
The service is very poor. On a more positive note, there is a good variety of beer on tap.

My wife and I recently returned from a trip to Germany and we were hungry for a good Schnitzel. I can honestly say that meal we had at the Gerst Haus was an insult to German cooking. The scnitzel was overcooked and tough. The red cabbage was like rubber and couldn't be chewed. The German fries were swimming in grease. I could go on but I think you're getting the idea.

Needless to say we left still hungry for a good German meal. Don't waste your hard erned cash..

These people think they have the right to call this German Food I have eaten in many German Restraunts , some good some not so good, This is absolutely the worst food I have ever eaten. I would not recomend this place to anyone unless they need to get drunk.

Pros: No pros except Bar Business

Cons: Everything else is horrible the food is horrible

This was a great find in Nashville. The Rueben was great and the red cabbage had the best flavor. I wish we were not traveling so I wish we were not traveling so I would of had a place to keep one of the wonderful desserts they had displayed.

In downtown Nashville right off the interstate is the best red cabbage I have ever had. The corned beef was very good and I wanted to try the desserts but I was so full.

Other people have had the Gerst Haus overcharge, but I have never had that happen. The atmosphere is wonderful, especially if you get to see the Oompahs. The food is great. My meal (a classic Reuben) was wonderful and my only complaint would be that the entree portion was smaller than one would expect and in comparison to other comparable restaurants. However the quality of the food and the sides offered are wonderful so don't take my con as a real negative or downside to then restaurant, I just didn't want to leave the space blank.

Cons: Price vs. Portion (only slightly a con)

This is by far the worst restaurant we have ever been to. It is dark, filthy and the food is little better than pig slop at prices fit for a king. Calling this a 'German restaurant' is an insult beyond description to the excellent German cuisine. The present owners are obviously not German. They evidently hate German food traditions with a passion. It is a riddle why the city of Nashville does not close them down. This place is not only an insult to German food but it is also an insult to the wonderful city of Nashville. Before you go to the place, please read all of the reviews, particularly the negative ones that talk about the defects of the various, pathetically poorly prepared dishes. Do you want to pay for these insults with your perfectly good money?

My Memphis family has been eating at Nashville's Gerst Haus since the 80's when they were in another location. We fondly remember the funny bathroom with the maze of hallways and three steps up to the toilet. The new location is so much better, not fancy, just comfortable. My sister and I make several trips a year just for lunch. The stroganoff is my favorite but the Berlinger Met is a close second. I usually get both then tote the rest home in a container I always bring with me. I'm normally not a beer drinker but I love the fishbowl Gerst beer. Love the cornbread cakes. Tried the Kraut Ball. Once was enough. I hear they have great hamburgers but I can never pass by my favorites to try one. We have never had a problem with service or our billing. We have found the wait staff to be very accommodating. I agree with the previous wirter, if you want fast food go to McDonalds. We will be seeing you soon Gerst Haus.

Pros: Large portions of good food

Cons: It's not in Memphis

I read the reviews indicating diners had been overcharged, so I checked my statement. An additional $2.00 was added to the charge. While this is a small amount, we will never go back.

The Gerst House is an eclectic dump - part lodge, part shabby cafeteria with christmas decorations still up in July - tacky . The food is pricey although you get a large portion, presentation mirrors the ambiance - second rate. All three people in our party had terrible indigestion after eating there. The beer, however, is cheap and served in a nice frosty mug. Go for that and sit at the bar - skip the high priced industrial feel fare.

We have eaten at Gerst Haus on several occassions. The food is really great and you get generous portions. Last time we went there was a polka band, we really enjoyed the listening to the music. The down side was the service was very slow. After about 15 minutes we finally complained about not getting waited on. Luckily the band kept us entertained while we waited. Would recommend as long as you are not in a hurry.

For the user, bionici, who wrote the review about the credit cards...My family owns the gerst and I took off the extra tip authorization. I am sorry that happened to you. I thought I had taken that off a long time ago, but I obviously didn't. I hope you will come back and eat with us. It should not happen again.

I don't know what all the bad reviews are about. We had great service and great food. If you thought it was gonna be cheap your an idiot. You should have gone to McDonalds if you wanted cheap food. The polka band was awesome and the 3 small children in our party we very entertained by them. I can't wait for my next trip to Nashville so I can go again.

Very specifically, the food was good & in larger portions. However, I've had better sauerbraten. The waitress provided OK service. I added a 15% tip to the total bill (food, drink, and taxes), and used my debit card. When I checked the bank website the next morning, an exact 22% tip had been added. I called the restaurant, and was told by the manager that this was a normal practice for the bank to pend a larger amount to the account, and it would be corrected in a couple of days. I immediately called the bank, since I knew that this was not true, and the bank confirmed that they would ONLY bill my account for the amount that the restaurant had submitted. I WILL NOT be going back to a restaurant in which the service staff dishonestly adds additional funds to the bill.

I love German food and agreed to go to Gerst Haus to meet up with some friends who had never had authentic German food. Normally, I have to drive to Clarksville because Madison St. International Cafe has the only good German meals so I was happy to try a restaurant that was closer. Well, the service was horrible,. It took close to 10 minutes just to get our beer and after almost an hour we finally got our food. It was half the portion and quality of what I get in Clarksville and over twice the price. The next day I took my friends to Madison St. Cafe and got the Jager Schnitzel dinner special for $6.99 and they loved it...the only down side, they don't carry beer.

Although I don't work downtown nor frequent their restaurants, I've found on the three occasions I've eaten lunch at the Gerst Haus (over the past four months) that it has had consistently good food and service. It won't ever be a Berghoff (Chicago) or Hofbrauhaus (Newport, KY), but then Nashville probably has 10 times more Vietnamese than Germans. If you need a German fix, I would recommend this restaurant, or stay at home and cook it.

My brother and I had dinner here last night (Sunday 1/04/09) at 5:30 pm. We both just loved it! I had been here before and had similar experiences. I had the Wiener Schnitzel (beaded veal) with Spatzele (German noodles) & white beans as my side dishes. It was delicious, though the Spatzele could have been a little warmer. My brother had Schweine (Pork Loin) along with some Sauerkraut on the side. He loved it! I sampled his food and also liked it very much. I also ordered the Gerst Sampler as an appetizer. I believe it consisted of Fried Oysters, Kraut Ball, Potato Pancake, and Ham Breads. It was all very tasty. We also got a pitcher of a Light German beer (can't remember the name) which was quite nice. Our server was a young woman named Kellye - who was very helpful and gave excellent service. This is a great place if you're willing to try something different. Not for someone who's just wanting an "Applebee's" kind of dinner. I highly recommend this restaurant - give it a try.

Let me start by saying I love the food at the Gerst Haus.now that that's been said let me say also that they
have to have the absolute worst wait staff of any eatery I have ever been to.When we entered we stood at the
front so long we started to seat ourselves but were finally noticed. Our waiter took our order & never wrote down one thing. We waited for about 10 minutes before I asked about our appetizer, needless to say he had
forgotten it.It finally arrived about 3 minutes ahead of our meals.Used my debit card, the bill was $55.50
tax & all, when I checked my account the next morning I had been billed for $61.60.I won't be back!

I have to say that some of the reviews really almost turned me off to even trying this place, but I truly feel that they must have had a one-off experience. Maybe don't go at 2pm, but dinner time for us was wonderful. All of our food was fantastic, we got Weinerschnitzel, Jager Schnitzel, and a sausage sampling platter. We even had a guest with us from Hamburg, Germany and she thought it was very authentic food and she loved it! We went on a Friday night at 5:20pm and were promtly seated. Live Bavarian style music started at 6pm and my 2 year old lit up the place with her dancing. Our service was outstanding as well, drinks were kept full, we were asked several times if everything was ok and if we needed anything. Wonderful experience and I highly recommend it.

Do NOT listen to the bad reviews on here. People must be overly picky or maybe had a oneoff bad experience. I ate at The Gerst House for lunch yesterday with 5 co-workers. The service was AWESOME and the food was the BEST!! I had the reuben and it was by far the best I've EVER had. I can't wait to go back. My co-workers all really enjoyed their meals too. LIke I said, I'm already planning my next trip back and will probably get the Reuben again, because it was THAT good. Eventually I may try other items on the menu. I can imagine that this place gets packed out before Titan games, which would lend itself to poor service and not as good food. Kind of comes with the territory!!

My family of 4 made it to the restaurant around 2pm on Saturday. It was really slow with plenty of room. The hostess looked bored to see us and it took a while for the waiter to approach our table. He looked less than enthused to be there and his attitude did not change. The food was pretty good-a bit bland but good enough. I had really wanted to try this place but the service really left a damper on the meal. I would probably go back again-just hope for a different waiter.

I, along with several collegues, made our way in rush hour traffic to enjoy some german food. It was a warm night for the season and I could see as I pulled in that the patio was filling up quickly. Thankfully there were still about three tables empty. I went inside and as I approched the receptionist, a waitress walked behind her and said, "DO NOT put anyone else outside, I don't want anymore". I'm thinking....here we go. So when the receptionist asked, I told her that the party wanted to sit outside. Now, I kept in mind that the weather was unexpected and staffing for outdoor seating would reflect that (longer wait). That was until I saw the dining room. There were 6, count em, 6 people in the dining room. That negates any lag in service. You would think that anyone working the dining room would jump at the chance for a table. Anyway, once the pregnant teenager finished cleaning her finger nails, she informed me that the patio was closed for a private party. I then asked, " the entire patio is closed?" Looking dumbfounded, she said "yeah" So I took a table inside. Then the waitress (another minor) brought over the menus and silverware and dropped them in a pile on the sticky table and left to join the chickens cackling at the receptionist's area.
Well, if thats how the meal starts, imagine what will happen when they actually have to start working. It was then that we all got up, and took our business elsewhere. With service like this, I can see why there were only 6 people eating. Keep looking. Besides, its McGerman at best.

Do. Not. Ever. Eat. Here. For some reason, I have given this place chance after chance to do better. Never again. I'm not a melodramatic guy. I'm usually really really fair. But I'd say 8 out of 10 times coming here, the service has been in the toilet. The only reason I kept coming back until now was it's where co-workers wanted to go because it was close to work, and the beer's cold and really good. Well, this past Friday night, my wife thought there was something "sandy" in her food. Someone joked that maybe it was glass. Well, sure enough she looks down and there's a HUGE chunk in her glass, with little splinters obviously sticking out. This somehow completely eluded the waitress. Someone had previously seen a chipped glass another night too, but we figured it was a one time thing. The waitress didn't do anything more than comp the particular beer. Well, she did offer to get the mgr, but then said she couldn't find one. Which seems to go along with several other reviews I've seen here. So there you go. My wife swallowed glass, and for compensation, no manager at all. Just a free partial beer and "I'm really sorry." I've been way too fair to this place, and will never make the same mistake again. Slow service is one thing. Eating glass is a whole other deal. Wow. Still can't get over that one.

Cons: the glass.

We actually like the Gerst; the atmosphere, the bar crowd, much of the food but not all .. the German is most iffy. But we have come to the conclusion that we just can't go back because the place is consistently filthy. The restrooms are filthy, no-one ever wipes down the bar, the tables are as likely as not to have stale beer on them. It's a shame, we liked to hang out there so much.

I went to the Gerst Haus for the first time last night and I have to say I was somewhat disappointed. Our service was good, the server was very friendly and our food arrived promptly. I ordered the goulash and while it tasted alright (a little too salty) it looked like someone had opened a can of Campbell's soup, heated it and put it on my plate. Don't get me wrong, I like the soup but I don't want to pay $12 for it. I just expected a little more from the place. Other than that the experience was good.

The food was great, the service was very friendly and professional. We thoroughly enjoyed the music, and the hospitality and it was just a very comfortable place . We had the sausage sampler, a dark beer, and the chocolate brownie with ice cream. Loved the music !!

I can't tell you how the food was since we walked out after waiting 30 minutes without anyone taking our order.
We were met at the door by a pleasant hostess who immediately sat us at a nice booth. After 15 minutes the hostess came by and asked if anyone had taken our order. When we told her no one had been by, she said it would be just a few minutes more. After 15 more minutes without anyone coming to our table we rose to walk out. A waitress then appeared who looked stressed. We told her we had waited 30 minutes and did'nt feel like want to stay since we were unsure how much longer it would take and she (the waitress) seemed upset. She tried to argue us into staying as we made our way to the door. I asked the Hostess if she could get the Manager. She came back and said he would be coming. After waiting 5 more minutes without anyone appearing, we finally left the Gerst House for the last time. There were several empty tables and I'm unsure why we couldn't receive service, but I am certain to never go there again.

We have been coming to the Gerst Haus for years. There has been a few changes, which to our liking, has all been for the better! We have taken many guests and clients there, and they too have loved the experience, The friendly staff and cozy atmosphere makes you feel at home, and we have never had a bad meal there! It fills up on weekends and sometimes there is a wait for a table, but the bar is a wonderful place to wait it out in! More beers than you can imagine and cold frosty "fishbowls" certainly make waiting enjoyable.

First time we went there the food was ok back in March of this year. The $ for what we had wasn't to bad. But the service was a -10. Slow servers you that you never see once they take your drink order for at least 10 minutes. Don't ask for an extra minute when ordering. It will turn into 10-12, it did for us both times. Never asked to refill our drinks. Never show back up even once to check in to see if you need anything else at all. Same waitress both times. This time tonight on 7-14-07 same issue. Kept notes. Here they are. Walked in at 8 pm, stood at the front counter for 2 minutes before anyone even noticed us. Sat down. 8:15 took drink orders, came right back with them. But once again water no lemon had lemon. Let her know we needed a minute to look at the menu. 8:25 she finally came back to take our order. He had the combination platter. I asked for chopped steak, medium with mashed potato's -gravy. 8:36 food arrives and I cut into my chopped steak. VERY WELL DONE. I tried to get her attention but couldn't. 8:49 she still hadn't checked in on us after getting our food. 8:50 wow she shows up! I asked how I ordered my meat and she repeated medium. I showed her it and also said I asked for mashed potato's -gravy and they were covered in it. She took the food back. Still no refills on drinks. 8:55 manager shows up, my food was comp'd. 8:57 replacement food shows up. Looks good! But instead of an 8 oz chopped steak its 2 small pieces of meat put on top of each other to look big and she took my silverware!! 9:00 can't get her attention. 9:02 husband gives me his fork, he stopped eating so I could. 9:15 she shows up and let me remind you never asked to refill drinks or how my food was and gives us the bill. I doubt if I will go back. Having older children we tend to eat out alot at a+ places. Normally our bill is around $75.00+ and a minimum of $15.00 for tip.

Still left a 17% tip not sure why. NEVER AGAIN! Normally we would leave 20%+.

This has become our favorite place to get together with friends, family, co-workers or just to stop in for happy hour by myself! The staff are super friendly and make you feel at home! The food is always great, and the portions are grand and the prices very reasonable. And if you just want to stop in for a cold beer, you will be amazed at the selection of beers in bottles and on tap! Ask the bartender for a sample of some.....they know their beer and will take good care of you! This place has quite a history and people come from all over the world. We've met folks from The Netherlands, Ireland, England, Germany, Brazil and all over the U.S.

We had held a managers meeting there once and i had nothing but praise . Everything was great the food ,the service and the the restuarant itself was immaculate. But that had to have been 3-4 years ago ,what a diffrence a little time makes. After calling once and the phone ringing i know aleast 20 times before i hung up, i tried again, this time it was answered promptly my order taken professionally. It was a to go order that we picked up rather quickly. My wife got the catfish dinner ,fish was under cooked, she otherwise was happy.I on the other hand ordered a fried oyster dinner,it was horrible. Not enough of the undercooked oysters, that were cold as well as doughy, the fries were soggy and wheres the cheese in the macaroni and cheese. Not quite what i had in mind from gerst house that i thought i knew.Maybe if i wait 3-4 more years they 'll get it right again

Gerst Haus is not a true German resturant; however, one can get some good German food. Get the large platter with a LARGE AMOUNT of EVERYTHING. This is the deal. The Schnitzel is good. Do Not get the bratwurst by it self that is like our hotdogs. Spend the money and get a dinner then you can at least say you tried the adult food. When we have gone something is missing and that is the Oktoberfest feeling. The building feels like you will get that feeling, but you never do. By the way I have gone to the Munich Oktoberfest 6 times. The problem is the waiter staff has never been out of Nashville, much less Germany. The party atmosphere is just not here. Another problem is SMOKING IS ALLOWED in the dinning room. As soon as you come through the door the smoking smell in gulfs you. The beers are ok. Plan to spend more money than original expected. That said, go to the Gerst House and try a large dinner and share it with the table then everybody will be happy. August 31, 2006

I think if you go to Gerst Haus with the right mindset you will have an excellent time and a unique experience. First, this is not fine German Cuisine, you have to understand it's the German equivalent of a burger & beer joint. That said, I have had three tasty meals at Gerst Haus, my favorites include the fried pickles & their side dishes. Best of all are the frosty "fishbowls" of the refreshing & satisfying house beer. I love the beer hall decor and the feeling that I'm not in Nashville when I visit, they have a live Oompah band on Fridays & you may be lucky to have that pleasantly surly waiter dressed in eye catching lederhosen. I love this place, one of my favorites in Nashville. Don't expect 4 star cuisine or even cheery service but if you appreciate a satisfying meal, good beer, a unique environment & even enjoy a little darkness in your entertainment you will enjoy Gerst Haus.

Several years back, I visited here, had Hasenpfeffer and was delighted! It was evening, and the band playing was reminiscent of old days overseas. About 1999ish, I talked my family into dropping in for lunch during a vacation. The service was abysmal, and the food not quite on par with the service. Ive never seen nor heard of a Schnitzel made with the type of coating one finds on Long John Silvers fish...and burnt, to boot. The waiter, whom I longed to smack, did at least warn me not to expect much if I ordered German. I thought, well, it might still be OKAY. I thought WRONG, and smackable waitguy was understating. Fortunately, I substituted a somewhat-less-burnt, better-than-nothing Wurst. Those bestowing 4 Stars are either relatives, awed by decor, or have never tasted real German cooking. Once leaving here, they STILL havent. Ive since warned others away, and wont return.

Despite some bad reviews here on the site, you ought to try the Gerst. We went in for a Sunday evening and closed the restaurant (had it mostly to ourselves). It was quiet since it was empty and our server was firendly and had a good personality. The overall value was nothing out of the ordinary, but the food was good. My entree could have been a little warmer, but none of us had any complaints about the taste & quality of our meal. The only down side was the amount of time it took for our food to come out, considering we were the only ones left in the place.

On a Friday night, decent crowd, the service is my biggest complaint. Not one of the 7 in my party received a refill on tea or coffee without asking then waiting for 10 minutes to get it. One person in party got food 10 minutes after everyone else. My cup had lipstick on it when served to me, we were given sides we did not order and were charged for them. 18% gratuity was added to the check and we did not know it until after we left and we had already given a nice tip to the server which was not deserved. He rarely came back to the table for anything. The music was uplifting but much too loud, could not hear each other speak.

The wiener scheiner which is suppose to be their speciality was tough and dry, no gravy
either to help. German fries was loaded with hot pepper, they should issue a warning.
Not worth the money

the chicken tortilla soup was the best thing on the menu. I am a true German, was born there, ate at many different places in Germany. I DO have a slight accent, but still the (very nice) waitress tried to convince us that their chicken tortilla soup was from an old German recipe. Her main argument was that it is cooked with a German kind of Jalapenos. Well, the food looks somewhat like German food, the chicken with paprika is close to the Hungarian original, but the bread is not even *close* to what you get in the cheapest store in Germany. Anyways, enjoy the atmosphere and take the chicken tortilla soup, it is REALLY good. I mean it. Believe me!

Having lived in Germany, my expectations might be a little high, but this was the worst food I've ever paid for in a restaurant, German or not. The food came out cold and congealed, the spaetzle was like dry rubber with canned gravy (COLD!) lumped on it. The only thing remotely edible that I could eat off my plate was very stale rye bread. The service was adequate (we were the waiter's only table, as the restaurant was nearly empty on this Sunday evening), and the beer selection was above average for Nashville. If you go, skip the food and just drink the Gerst beer!

Having lived in Germany for two years I was skeptical that any place back in the "states" would come close to German cuisine. I was wrong! Ther Gerst Haus has come the closes! The food (Jagerschnitzel) is the best since I left Germany in 1991. And the Goblets of Gerst (although American beer) comes close. They also have a wide assortment of beer available. The live entertainment is some of the best around. Just as at a German Fest the entire restraunt stood up and participated in a huge "Chicken Dance"!!!
