I purchased a 2008 Saturn Vue last November. The vehicle is fine, but the people working there are not. It was raining when I took it home and i noticed that the rear tire's spun alot. I had the tire's gapped and they were not legal. I called the next day, told them and was informed that they could'nt replace the tire's till Mon. I was taking a trip that weekend and with 2 small children I needed new tire's as it was supposed to rain. I was told to get them installed, give them the receipt and I would be reimburssed for them. About 3 month's later,I inquired about my money, and was told they conviently "LOST" the receipt. I believe they never intended to pay me for the tire's in the first place.

New carmax fan here! Excellent Service! Took my dad there to get him a midsized suv, he got a trailblazer. The price was a little below bluebook, per our credit union the price was very fair. They detailed the car and filled the gas tank, my dad is very happy with his new trailblazer. We were very impressed with the experience, we have a business and have to purchase vehicles every year and we will certainly return to Carmax. HOWEVER, if you are using their financing-be sure to check with your own bank or credit union, the rate carmax offered was laughable at 7.5%! Dad got his financing at his own bank for 2.9%.
Note that just days before that, my husband bought a 2010 truck at the Toyota dealer on Alcoa and not only did they give it to us with an empty gas tank, they didn't wash or detail it either-and it was dirty!
On another note, I see a lot of complaints made here against carmax, holding them responsible for the poor manufacturing of vehicles...that's just not fair. Carmax didn't build the cars, they are just reselling them. The auto industry was cranking out a lot of crap from 2002-2008.....it wasn't until the auto market crashed that they were forced to improve quality. Folks should read reviews about the car they want to buy before buying it--some of the issues you are blaming carmax for should be placed on the manufacturer's shoulders! And yes, I know that the trailblazer has lousy reviews, thats why I encouraged my dad to buy the extended warranty on it, should some of those issues with the trailblazer surface-it's not the fault of carmax, its GM who built it! Hopefully I wont have to experience whether or not carmax repair service is good or bad, crossing my fingers on that one! :)

Well they didnt sell me a wrecked car, they did one better. Took my car to knoxville tn location to sell them my car. They took it out for a test drive. 45 Minutes later was brought back on a roll back as the driver crashed it into a curb bending the front left tire all the way back against the fender. Went to scene with the police (carmax refused to call police), could see 40 foot skid mark starting where he turned off the straight road and started aright around the circle and then another 100 foot skid mark after hit the curb. The skid marks were not from locking brakes but where front left tire outer edge was actually going sideways (could see it very clearly on the concrete right before hit curb). He was never on the brakes and was trying to drive through it. I have a 2008 mazdaspeed 3 that has very sticky tires and can take corner at high speeds. But the was circle and once leave straight road going on to circle was down hill. How fast was he going?? If they do not buy it for full value i am going to have mazda pull the computer record which will show speed, which gear, if brakes were applied everything.

My husband and I purchased a 2003 Toyota Tundra from Carmax in Turkey Creek just before Christmas. After we signed the papers and paid the downpayment, Carmax wrecked the truck in the parking lot while bringing it out of the car wash. They had the vehicle for 5 days while they fixed the dent and scrape on the side of the vehicle. They generously offered us two free oil changes for our trouble. After we picked it up, within two days the truck started leaking oil. We took it back... they said it was a leaky axle and would fix it. Again, they had the truck for days. While driving a loaner car, Carmax actually sold the loaner we had in use and made us bring back the vehicle we were driving. We picked up the truck after they "Fixed it" again. Within a couple days, it resumed leaking oil. They said they would replace the axle. We picked up the truck (again), and after a week and a half, the truck made a loud popping noise when it was shifted into drive. It also began to make a whirring sound when driven.
We had driven the vehicle for maybe two weeks total since Christmas and this weekend we took it back to Carmax and told them that we either wanted a different vehicle or every penny we spent back...
Carmax will not replace the vehicle or refund our money. They sold us a truck with a lot of problems.
I'm not sure how a truck like this made it through their "vigorous" inspections, But I would like to warn other drivers of Carmax's treatment of hard working, honest individuals.

I made a Facebook Page about how much I hate CarMax. Maybe if I get enough people to "like" it, we can make CarMax accountable for their actions.

I drove an Equinox home last Saturday and it had problems on the way home. The salesman said I had three days to drive it before I purchased it. I still owed on my car and what I didn't know when they have you sign all those papers while they tell you it's the odometer reading, that you have insurance etc... They don't tell you you have just sold them your car. They said they would appraise it to see what it's worth but they don't tell you you just sold them yours.
I called Bonnie ? Monday morning and told her I wanted my car back and to return the Equinox she lead me to believe I couldn't get it back and that I would have to talk to the manager so I knew I wasn't getting my car back.

I went back to carmax and set up an appointment for this week because I thought it was safe to drive since carmax say's they do the 125 points of inspection but now I'm afraid to drive it unless someone follows me.
It started with the right wheel grinding when I turned left but now when I drove down my drive way it felt like the breaks are going to go out and they sound like metal grinding together real bad so I park at the bottom of the hill and walk up.
When I first start the car big puffs of black smoke comes from the tail pipe.
If you leave the car running it starts to smell like sulfur coming from the tail pipe..

When you are talking to their sales people they tell you how many cars they sold and brag about every car gets individual
attention to make sure it's in press teen condition before before they sell it. I felt like I finely I found a dealership that really wants you to be happy with your purchase.
I may have made a bad mistake buying from carmax.
I will know Monday when I take it to the Chevrolet service department and pay to have everything checked before I return to carmax in hopes they will fix what should have been fixed before it was up for sell. If not I will have to pay an attorney to straighten all this mess out. I will change my rating if carmax does the right thing , If so I will let you know.

very nice people to work with however the customer service is lacking in professionalism. I bought a Pick up truck from Carmax of Knoxville. It turned out to have several mechanical issues so I traded it with Carmax of Knoxville for a different pickup located in South Carolina, paid for the shipment of this vehicle. I had the tags transferred from the first truck to the second. They expired and when I looked for the registration in ALL the paperwork I could not locate it. I called Carmax of Knoxville and they told me that they are not sure what the problem is and that they (Carmax of Knoxville) will send me a temporary tag and will call me when they figure out the problem. What could possibly be the problem?? Hopefully I do not have to go back there and sit again for three hours to redo the paperwork! There needs to be a change in their buying process! This alone will cause me to go elsewhere when it comes to purchasing another vehicle, sorry CARMAX.

Carmax advertises their amazingly thorough pre-sales check of their cars, so we didn't mind paying well over what our Volvo s40 was worth, thinking we were paying a little extra (actually a lot extra) for the piece of mind of buying a guaranteed reliable car. With this same thinking we also purchased their extended warranty, which was also extremely expensive, but seemed like a good idea since we were assuring ourselves we would never have any problems out of the car.

That would have been nice if it were true. We have had NOTHING BUT problems out of this car. A week after driving the car off the lot my wife noticed a weird noise coming from the front passenger side of the car. She took it to the Volvo dealership since it was closest and found out that the wheel was not even properly secured and in danger of coming off! We informed Carmax of this and problem (a week after passing their 125+ point inspection) and they were unconcerned.

Very soon after that problem the car developed an odd noise in the steering. After over four attempts at fixing the problem (one time we were told "Drive it around until it gets worse and then bring it back so we can figure out whats wrong") the problem remained unfixed and our warranty expired. We were told that even though the problem existed the whole time the car was under warranty it would not be fixed now that the warranty had expired. To top it all off I took it to a "real" mechanic who found the problem in about 5 minutes and said anyone with a basic knowledge of auto repair should have done the same. We have also had instances of factory parts being replaced with generic parts which wore out too quickly. There were several other issues but I'm tired of typing.

Do yourself a favor and don't let CarMax's commercials and slogans fool you, they seem nice and knowledgeable before you buy the car, but once they have your money its a different story.

I have 2 reasons for wanting to review Carmax. 1st of all, I was and am a customer. I love the staff and I feel they are competent employees and very friendly. 2nd, my husband is now on staff there as a mechanic. His philosophy is "if that were my mother needing help...I know how I would want her to be treated". And he truly sticks to that.
We have bought 3 cars from them, and love them all! They have the best prices.
