I ordered a special strawberry cake at 8 PM on a Thursday, and I needed it by 12 PM on that next Friday. Not only did they make it in time, it was absolutely delicious, and everyone commented on the quality. I was quick to tell everyone where I got it, and most of them had already heard about how wonderful their cakes were. I am so thankful I found this place. Thank ya'll so, so much!

Have used Kay Bakery for years. However, the last cake I purchased was NOT of the same quality I had always enjoyed before. I could have made a cake from a mix at home and done just as well. As a matter of fact, I truly believe a boxed cake mix was used. The unique flavor, texture and moistness that made their cakes superb in the past is just that - in the past. Spend your money somewhere else.

From the moment I placed the order for a John Morrison (wrestler) cake for my son's birthday, I had an uneasy feeling. The young lady who took the order telephoned me no fewer than four times to tell me something had to be changed in order to make the cake work. Then, an hour before I was scheduled to pick it it, she called to say the sprayer was broken and they couldn't make the cake. She advised me to go buy some toys or something and they would place those atop a plain cake. What a joke!!!!!!!!!

I have "Personally" been using Kay'sB for about four years now! I was introduced to them through my brother and his wife YEAR's ago! They've been ordering from them for "The Kids'" birthdays for quite some time! Their cakes are AWESOME!!! The moisture blows you away! My cakes have always been on-time....(even when it went under New management)! The place may look like a "hole-in-the-wall"...but, the cakes are EXCELLENT!!! I'll continue to use them!!!

I purchased a Cake 1-10-09 for my son's 1st birthday and it was awesome. I didn't mind the prices because the cake was really good. My son's cake was a huge hit I'm looking forward to this year.

Great Birthday Cake-
I purchased a cake 8-8-09 from Kays bakery and I'm a very very touch critic. The cake I received was not only huge in size but the entire display of the cake was outstanding. The cake was decorated to perfection and you could just smell the freshness. The moisture and taste was beyond butter melting in your mouth. I thought Sams was the only place you can find a decent cake but now i will be taken and advising everyone to try Kays bakery especial for custom design cakes. I've now gone back to order pedifores for this weekend, and it always makes it better when the staff is great too,

This place does not even qualify as a bakery! I ordered my wedding cake and birthday cake from Kay's Bakery. Instead of calling me to verify details that they forgot to write down, they put black icing on my wedding cake. It was not anything close to what I ordered. You could also see the cake through the icing because they were too cheap to add another layer of icing. My birthday cake looked like a three year old drew it. It was supposed to have my business logo on it. Instead, they took it upon themselves the put a 6 point star (I am not Jewish) and a 4 string guitar on it. Any idiot knows that a guitar has 6 strings, especially since we brought them a picture. They did not bother to call us to let us know that they were going to be completely changing the design that we originally ordered. And to top it off, when we took the cake out of the box, it was not even. One side was considerably shorter than the other side. The manager Queo refuses to give me the name of the owners or how to contact them. I would not order anything from these people that is for a special occasion. You will be disappointed!

Have been ordering cakes from Kay's B since moving here in 1994. The product is unsurpassed in flavor and texture. The staff are so nice and kind to you. Only drawback for me is location. However, it doesn't stop me from continuing to order from them on special occasions! The building is run down and the aesthetics not the best, but the product makes up for all that.

We moved to Memphis in 1976 & heard of Kay Bakery early on. Our family used them for this & that over the yrs. They did my wedding cake in 1986. I have used them for bday cakes, petit fours, & gingerbread men for yrs since. I have ordered dozens of petit fours during the holidays this yr. Both my guests & I were pleased w/the svc & the look & taste of the product. They were responsive on the phone, ready when promised. The cakes were attractive, totally fresh, & delicious. Other reviews talk about the looks of the place & lack of polish & professionalism of the experience when ordering, etc. You go to Kay Bakery for a consistently good product. If you focus on that, you will be pleased. I am glad they have stayed in business, are locally owned, & have been consistently good over the yrs, despite changes in ownership.

This is (or was, if it's still there) the oldest family owned bakery in Memphis. There is not now or ever was an owner whose first name was KAY. The bakery was established in 1932 by a German family who had immigrated to Memphis and it was named their German surname beginning with an S . Leona was the given name of the surviving daughter who inheirited the bakery at her parents death, she later married a fellow surnamed KAY and so they re-named the bakery Kay Bakery. For many years it was situated on Jackson Avenue and later moved to Avon Street. At Mr. Kay's death in the early 1980's the store was sold to Lowell and Joan Gibson of Gibson Donuts and Mrs. Gibson operated the store from 1984 until 1996. Their products were marvelous and they provided wedding cakes to hundreds if not thousands of weddings during that period, sometimes 20 per week. 1996 the store was sold to a Ms. Jodie Parkinson. That's all info of this date.

Although Kay has alot of good things going for her bakery; selection, taste, decent prices, she could stand to do some renovations to her "Wedding Room." I couldn't believe how 80's everything still looked, from the worn out pictures in her catalog, to the dusty and dingy displays. The associate didn't have a price list to show me, either. All she had was a pad of paper, which she kept scribbling on. I asked to sample different flavors, and all they could bring me was a cupcake holder full of white frosting. At one point, the associate just walked out, got in her truck and drove off. Then when she came back, she said, "Oh, are y'all still here?" Ofcourse we were. She'd told us to think of questions, and she'd be back to talk to us. This is yet another local business that has achieved notoriety for it's great product, but has forgotten customer service skills in the process.

PROS: awesome cakes and pastries
CONS: less than friendly service, bad presentation
