I hadn't been to Dot's in decades and was concerned when our friends wanted to meet there for dinner. It's now my new favorite place. Some of the best comfort food I've ever had, huge portions, and I haven't had anything there I didn't like, including the fabulous squash. The bread they serve as an appetizer is enough to get you coming back for more. We found out it's run by Pappas now (right next to Pappas Barbecue in the same location) and I just don't think the food could be any better. See if you can save room for pie!

Dot Coffee Shop is a great place to eat. The building and decor is an interesting throw-back to the 1970s, and there is usually only a short wait, if any. The food is typical Southern comfort food: meatloaf, chicken fried steak and the like, and is served up in very large portions for a fair price. Not necessarily a cheap price, but certainly worth the money. The service isn't usually anything to write home about, but it is pretty regular, even if the waitstaff seems to take their time about doing everything. This is a great place to take guests from out of town, as it has the atmosphere and feel of how Texas was many years ago.

Dot's coffee shop rocks- their breakfast is the best ever! I love poppin' in after a night on the town. Denny's cannot hold a candlestick to Dot's! I wonder how long it's been around... seems like forever!

As much as I like House of Pies for a midnight (or later) meal, I love Dot Coffee Shop even more. It's also open late, and serves big portions. For some odd reason the place always makes me think of the 1960s locations in the movie Catch Me If You Can. It has some very cool styling, including some stained glass decor. The service can be a little on the slow side, but that seems to be a facet of the well-cooked food and the popularity of the place. The waitresses here are some of the nicest you'll ever meet in Houston.
