The service is nice there. The food is pretty good, but it is a little pricey. I have never had a bad waitress though. They were all very nice, and that is always a big deal to me.

best breakfast tacos, by far. Funky little cafe- wood floores, high ceilings. Neat spot- but you're really going for the food. I strongly recommend breakfast- it's the best in San Marcos!

For the past 20 years, Caf on the Square has resided, appropriately, on the Square in historic downtown San Marcos. It is located in the T. A. Talbot building, which was constructed in 1897. The skylight, pressed tin ceiling panels and wood floor are original and are listed in the National Registry of Historic Places.
From one of the tables at the front windows, we had a great view of the impressive Hays County Courthouse and the perfectly manicured grounds. On the northeast corner of the grounds is a statute of John (Jack) Hays, 1817-1883, Indian fighter and Texas Ranger.

Stepping into the Caf was like entering a place where everybody knows your name - and they??re always glad you came. There is nothing fancy about the caf, just good food and good service. It's a place where you can get a quick meal or have a leisurely cup of Joe while reading the newspaper or your favorite book. The black and white checkered counter adds to the casual ambience.

The Caf is open at 7:00 am for breakfast and continues serving great food until 10:30 pm . During the early hours, the place is quite laid-back; locals enjoying morning coffee or a quick bite before heading off to work or summer classes at the University. We were told that this place really comes alive in the evenings.

Breakfast fare includes great Mexican dishes such as:

Huevos a la Mexicana - scrambled eggs with onions, tomatoes and jalapeno peppers, served with potatoes, refried beans and flour tortillas.

Chorizo Mexicano - Spicy Mexican sausage scrambled with eggs, served with potatoes, beans and flour tortillas

Migas ?? (a Texas Favorite) Sauted corn tortillas, tomatoes, onions, bell pepper and eggs, topped with cheese, served with potatoes beans and flour tortillas
There are also the classic breakfasts, eggs, omelettes, biscuits and gravy and pancakes. My favorite is the Chorizo and egg tacos with salsa.

Lunch: Mexican food, burgers, sandwiches, soups and salads.

Supper: Getting past the appetizers is the hard part. Try the mushrooms or the chicken, beef or spinach Quesadillas served with guacamole salad. Entrees include Mexican, Italian, seafood, steaks, chicken and pork dishes. Complete your feast with a piece of Four Layer Chocolate Pie and a Cherry Cheese Pie.
