We had a small party of 8 at the SaltGrass......NEVER AGAIN...... When you have an 8 person party the waiters know the gratuity is an 18% given no matter how bad the service is!!!! And believe me the service was atrocious. First the young people there couldn't understand the party was for 8.... they tried to seat us with 5, next try was for 6 then finally a half hour later we finally found someone who could count to 8. Once seated and the menus handed out....another interminable long wait for a person to serve us drinks. There were about 3 empty tables around us at the time we sat down....while we were waiting for service people were seated at those tables, received their drinks AND their food before the waiter even took our order!!!! Then it took another life time to get the food.....evidentially my shrimp and chicken had gotten cold waiting for the rest of the meals to be made because they saw fit to nuke the meal back to warm....nuking shrimp and chicken turns the meat into rubber!!!!! I had asked for some ketchup to try to disquise the foul chicken but the waiter took so long bringing it to me... I didn't receive it until we were ready to pay for the food. Disgusting horrible place to pop over $200 and 3 hours. If you have a holiday crowd....do yourself a favor and find someplace else to eat.....these people in Round Rock, Texas are pathetic!!!!!

Pros: There are NO pros

Cons: Bad service, terrible cold rubbery food that had been nuked to warm up

I'm surprised at the number of negative - or less than stellar - reviews on this restaurant. I've been here numerous times, with my wife, with and without our adult daughter, with friends, even solo, and I've never once had a bad experience. The food - steaks, specifically - are routinely spectacular, the salads, while simple, are absolutely fresh with wonderful dressings. The Shiner Bock beer bread is fresh, hot, and delicious, and the dessert choices are great (if you have room - if not, get one to go!) The choices of sides are plentiful and good. I have found the waitstaff to be consistently very, very good to excellent. I had one minor issue about something - I don't even remember what - on one visit, and it was immediately made right by the manager. Even though I've come to expect great service, it has been over and above often enough that I've sought out the manager to commend a particular waiter or waitress. Our favorite steakhouse in Central Texas, hands-down.

Pros: Outstanding steaks, great salads, great waitstaff

Cons: Can be quite busy at dinnertime, call-ahead barely better than just showing up

My husband and I have eaten here numerous times and have always been pleased. The food is great and so is the service. The Ranger Rattlers is our favorite appetizer. The house salad and chicken tortilla are very good. Of course, they have excellent steaks. If you have room for dessert, I highly recommend the Margarita Pie. The menu doesn't list it has a cheesecake topping and drizzled with fresh strawberry sauce. I consider this "a to die for dessert" and my 12-year-old daughter loves it too!

My husband and I went to Saltgrass last night...

We started with the chicken tortilla soup (him) and the house salad with ranch dressing (me). He seemed to like the soup, but said it was thicker than he had expected. The salad was fresh, the croutons were very well seasoned and crunchy, and the salad dressing was phenomenal - definitely NOT your Hidden Valley variety of ranch.

For mains, he had the chicken fried steak and I had the chopped sirloin steak. I am SO glad I didn't order chicken fried steak. At first when it came out, I was a tad envious. But for only a second. Until I realized that the outer 2 inches all around the chicken fried steak was only crust! Additionally, when my husband went to dip a piece of bread into his cream gravy on top of the steak, there was a 'skin' that had formed on top. The meat inside was very tough and dry. My chopped sirloin (medium rare) was very good, as were the mushrooms on top - extremely flavorful. The onions could have been cooked a wee bit more - they were still crunchy, which was a bit of a turn off. We both agreed that the mashed potatoes were very nice, but they were plain. Fortunately, I had enough gravy to top mine, but there wasn't enough gravy on top of the chicken fried steak to also top the mashers.

We decided to order a dessert to share, and we asked to see the dessert menu. This being our first time there, we weren't aware of the rather pretentious manner in which the "dessert menu" was presented. Regardless, we settled on the chocolate cake. It was rich, very chocolatey and decadent. Even though after eating about halway through it we were both ready to stop, after seeing the check and seeing the price of the cake, we were resolved to finish it!

Overall, I'd say Saltgrass is a nice place to go, but this is definitely not the hometown local steakhouse I was looking for last night when planning our night out. I guess I'll keep searching!

I went to the Saltgrass Steakhouse in Round Rock today (May 20, 2008) for lunch with six other gals. They got a table ready for us right away. I ordered their Gulf Shrimp and 8oz Steak combo. It came with soup or salad...I had the Tortilla Soup. It had corn in it which I thought was unusual, and lots of cheese. It could have been hotter, temperature wise, but It was very good, and I would order it again. I was given three choices of shrimp....either shrimp scampi, coconut shrimp, or grilled shrimp. I chose the coconut shrimp, broccoli as a side, and my steak done medium. They brought out plenty of beer bread for us while we awaited our orders. We did not have to wait long before we were served. My coconut shrimp and dipping sauce was excellent., however, my steak was well done. The waitress came over to me shortly and asked if everything was ok. I told her my steak was overdone, and she was very appologetic, and immediately removed it, and within minutes I had a new steak which was done to perfection. The cook had even come out and asked me specifically how I wanted it grilled, and he even offered to add some mushrooms, which I declined. He also asked me if I would like steak sauce. He was very, very nice, as was our waitress. I did order the steak sauce, but the steak was so good and flavorful, that I didn't want to spoil the taste with the steak sauce, so I didn't use it. The onion rings that topped the steak were some of the best I've ever had. Normally I don't eat a large lunch, so I had half of my lunch left over. Our waitress brought several of us a to-go box. Everyone at my table enjoyed their lunch, and we all agreed that we would definately make a return trip. Two of my friends ordered the Grilled Hickory Chicken smothered in cheese and mushrooms. They both thought it was superb. It was mouth-watering! Made me want to come back and order that dish next time.

Considering we arrived at 6:00 p.m. on Mother's Day evening, the wait was not too long (20 minutes - less than quoted). I hoped for a quieter atmosphere, but there were lots of screaming children (not faulting the restaurant, but my lack of research), and it was difficult to hear our waitress, who did a good job of explaining the cuts of meat and the amount of "pink" in medium, etc.

My mother had the center-cut filet (which was reasonably priced in my estimation) and she said it was so tender she could cut it with a fork at medium-well. My dad got the largest chicken-fried steak I ever saw. It was so huge we all laughed! It was on a big platter which couldn't begin to contain it! But, he said the breading was crisp and delightfully spicy, while the meat itself was quite tender. The waitress wisely offered to box it up on one of her many attentive visits to our table.

Being vegetarian, I was expecting to make do on bread and salad, but there were several appetizers, a couple of salads, potato dishes and seasonal vegetables to choose from. I had mango tea, which was delicious. The Shiner Bock Beer Bread was interesting, but the sweet butter surprised me (not in a good way. LOL).

I got more than I expected. Since it was Mother's Day, if Mom was happy, that would have been enough for me, but it was a very pleasant experience all the way around. The waitperson subtly took my credit card so I could pay before my dad had a chance to fight me for the check. We had plenty of attention, quick and pleasant service (the kind where bread appears and dirty dishes disappear and you aren't quite sure when it happened).

Yes, it's a chain, but if I need to entertain carnivores and want consistent food and reliable service, I will go there again.

Pros: Service of Waitstaff, Value, Quality of food, Attentiveness

Cons: Noise level, unruly children (part of the time)

My family and I really enjoy this resturant, we go here maybe once every two weeks. The food is always consistenetly enjoyable. You could describe it as a true Cattlemen Steakhouse, from the wagon trail artwork to the food itself. Some of my favorites on the menu there would have to be House Salad with Honey Mustard dressing and Cheeseburger (add bacon for .99) and fries. Or for a steak try the Chop Steak w/ mushroom & onion glaze & baked potato.
I would highly reccomend this resturant for the quick seating and good service, and more importantly the FOOD!

My pribe rib had zero flavor and was tough. I should have sent it back but our server was horrible. It would have taken forever. Food was overall disappointing. Server tried selling us dessert in the middle of our meal. My husband said "we're in the middle of our meals, can u come back after we're done?" Server got agitated. After my husband's plate was cleared and I was still trying to get through my bad prime rib, the server asked again! Some servers should not bother coming into work.

I love this restaurant! I especially love the El paso chicken meal. First of all the shiner bock bread is excellent, they have it no where else, I think? Well anyways, their iced tea is great if you like iced tea and you can also call ahead to reserve spot in the wait line so when you do get there you get seated.

They say you get what you pay for, and that is soooo true at Saltgrass. I have never been more dissapointed in a steak than I was here. The meat was tough and flavorless, the air had an odor, and the service was uppity. There are so many excellent restaurants in Austin, why waste your time and money at this one?

Excellent Food and Service. We have been there numerous times and each one has been awesome. The food is great. The steak is always juicy and there are plenty of sauces to choose from, but you will not need them. The portions are huge and the appetizers are some of the best I have had. If you like Saltgrass I'm sure you'll love Golden Corral, Texas Roadhouse, Logans, etc. With so many unique joints to eat in in this area why would anyone eat here? Thankfully there are several hotels next door in case you fall asleep halfway through dinner.

Service-BAD...Food-BAD....Atmosphere-LAME. This is just another chain restaurant. If you want a great steak, go to a unique reataurant, not a chain...there actually are a couple in Round Rock....to get a great steak, be willing to pay a little more and research first!!

My boyfriend & I go there often because he says he has to "get his Saltgrass on." No other steak house will do when he is craving a good steak & ribs. I love their fried shrimp & ribeye. The flavor is the best & so is the service!

I think this particular Saltgrass has some of the best prime rib I've tasted. Yes, I know all Saltgrass should be the same....but???
My wife doesn't eat Prime Rib, so she ordered the Rib Eye Steak (Med-Well) and did an excellant job.
For a special treat, order the margaritta swirl with mango - it was darn good!
My teenage daughter order the BBQ Baby Back Ribs and she claims it was the best she's tasted.

Ok, I went at 6pm and there was a long wait to get seated, but it was worth the wait!

It took about 20 minutes for us to get our salad and almost another hour for our food to reach our table. They don't know how to cook a well done steak! They had to take mine back not oncce but twice and when it came out the last time it was still pink. Our poor waiter was swamped in his section that he was frazzled and kept telling us how sorry he was and bringing us bread. I feel we wasted our money because I had to leave hungry. oh well, we won't go back.

The Saltgrass at I-35 was a great experience. We had Ribeyes and Pork Chops and everything came the way it was ordered and it was delicious.
The service was good and the waitress checked on us every few minutes even though the restaurant was packed.
I probably will go back there on a special occasion since the prices are reasonable, but it is still alot money for a dinner.
We only were 3 person and I even would go there with a group of up to 6 person. Everything above that I rather go to UR cooks.

Last week was our first visit there. Despite the mixed reviews we had heard, our waiter provided excellent service and earned his tip. We had the prime rib and filet mignon and both were cooked perfectly as ordered. The only thing we noticed that needed improvement was the wine pouring; the waitstaff needs to be educated on the proper procedure for serving wine. Other than that, all was delicious and we will definitely be back!

Although there are no complaints with the food, and the atmosphere is so-so, management could brush up on a lot of little things. Non smoking areas should be completely away from smoking areas-not two tables over. Treat customers like you are glad they are there, not just a table. Waiters need to be more heads up- don't make the customers have to ask for bread or the fresh ground pepper which was offered to the next table.

My husband thinks Saltgrass has the best prime rib in Texas. I don't eat prime rib, but I can tell you their filets are excellent as are their Chicken K-bobs. Yum. The only drawback is 1) Saltgrass is in Round Rock 2) You have to put up with less than stellar service and 3) there's usually a long wait This is a great place to take kids. The overall din of the place is loud but you can still hear each other talk -- good acoustical design. The country music and decor is hokey and fun. Not fine dining, but a fun place to eat out.

I had high expectations going into the restaurant. I had heard good things from a friend who worked there but she obviously did not cook the steak when I went. I was seated promtply but the person who served us didn't come around very often. The steak was cold and dry. All they had for sauce was Heinz 57 which is like putting ketchup on your Filter Mignon. I haven't been back since and haven't heard anything good either. There are plenty of other places to go for steak. Nice atmosphere is a plus.

Pros: good parking, prompt seating, atmosphere

Cons: food, overpriced, mediocre service

One of the poorest dining experiences I've ever had. We've been back 3 or 4 times, but it never got any better.

Saltgrass is the best steakhouse in the Austin area, hands down! The seasonings that are used are very flavorful and the servings are generous. The soups are excellent also. The chicken tortilla soup is of a different variety than normal for this area, but it is really good. Definitely one of the best!

The atmosphere is loud and the service was awful, I do have to say that the filet was great, we might try it again in the late future, hopefully the service will have gotten better.

I know RR has got to have a better place than this place. The service was awful and the food portions were so small I had to ask if I got the right steak. It was over priced and I will not return. I should have listen to the previous review. How do they stay in business?

Saltgrass is by far the best steak house I have ever been to. For those on a budget it is best to go at lunch, because dinner can be a tad bit expensive, but well worth it! The complimentary fresh bread is great, and the butter is even
