The food was not bland. It did have taste, however, it's not authentic Indian. AND the dealbreaker for me is, they have these sheer colored curtains hanging from the ceiling. THEY ARE COVERED IN A 2 INCH LAYER OF FILTH! A restaraunt HAS to

fabulous and consistently good. I have been eating at Shiva's since my days at Rice University. They have a lunch buffet that is worth the pain of parking in Rice Village. Moderately

My first encounter with Shiva in the Rice Village was about seven years ago. I was unexperienced with this ethnic food and all I remember is that i sweated like a foodball player in summer practice. I decided to go back and give it a second chance. After all, I had already learned to like Indian food. I have gone to about seven restaurants in the city and wanted to know what was all the hype about Shiva.

BIG MISTAKE! Not that the food was bad, or memorable but the service is poor. Poorer than Bush's vocabulary.
I mean, one of the weiters spilled water on the table and did not offer to transfer us to another one. He just handed out napkings and expected us to dry the table and eat on top of the damp cloth. Service was rushy and spartan.
I cannot recomend this place. I will not be seeing the "auspicious one" in the village again. Hopefully

Always loved Shiva for their food, atmosphere, freindly staff .
I visited their Sugar land location and the food was yummy as always. It was lunch buffet and to my surprise they had Noodles with spiced flavor. It was beyond words. Loved it a lot. . A place to visit if you like authentic Inidan food, in a family atmosphere with Inidan insturmental music being played to soothe your ears. One thing I could complain was the manager who was dressed and carried himself well, but had a grumpy look.

I have to say, after reading the previous reviews, I was a little skeptical to try this place. From the moment I walked in and smelled the wonderful food to the time I left, I was more than pleased. The waiters were quick to get us served with water and bread. My glass was never more than half empty before it was refilled. The food came out in a very timely manner and was absolutley fabulous. Prices were very cheap considering the amount of food and quality. Whoever ate there and said it was 100 bucks for 4 people obviously ordered like 3 entrees for himself. If you love Indian food please ignore all the reviews and go try this place. I cant wait to go back!!

I was in Houston with family and went to the lunch buffet. The food was great. The mutton curry, chicken curry and hot Naan were great. But the service was extremely poor. Waiter did not come for drink refills and when we wanted the bill split he was annoyed. The buffet is advertised for less than it is. Any Desi knows that traditional food has to be eaten by hands. The atmosphere in the restaurant did not allow this. Ever tried cutting some meat off bones with a fork and knife?? I think you get the point. It was frustrating and we got food all over. But over all food was yummy and fresh.
FYI - They don't have a lunch menu. Only lunch buffet. So if you are not hungry enough for the buffet do not go there!

I just ate at Shiva for lunch. Boy, was it a great meal or what ! The buffet was EXCELLENT. The food was remarkable. Me and three of my other friends ate here. We all agreed that Shiva is the ultimate place for indian food. The chicken curry, the lamb curry and the spinach with cheese cubes were made to perfection. The bread was nice and hot and served to the table. The service was prompt and efficient. The price was just under $10.
That is very moderate for the quality and variety, not to mention the terrific location. I am impressed,

Always loved Shiva's food and ambience. Have been a frequent eater at both the Rice Village and Sugar land location. I work in the Medical Center area, but live in the suburbs. Recently we had guests over from Canada and I took them to Shiva's Sugar land location. Everyone enjoyed the food, specially the Rogan Ghosh and Ghosh Shahi Korma.
I wanted to say that the comment posted about Shiva being small and comparing the Mantra's to other restaurants only tells any customer how desperate the individual is to promote Mantra. It is very sad to see this kind of tactics.
In my experience Shiva offers good food, great ambience and friendly pleasant atmosphere.

We love to eat out. The food was just not tasty (too blend ) & the atmosphere was very dull. Anytime we pay $100 for 4-5 people we expect good food & great ambience. The service is a usual as any other indian restaurant. Finally we have indian restaurants in Sugarland. I guess we were comparing Shiva to the other new indian restaurant ( Mantra of Sugarland not Katy ). Well there was no comparison. Mantra in sugarland is the best indian Restaurant our family have been too as we love there decor, ambience & food. We had zero problem of paying $100 for4-5 people. We wish the indian restaurants in Houston can at least spend some money in Interior & then charge us accordingly. Look at India's, Bombay Brasserie, gourmet India it looks so old yet they still charge high. Anyway we tried twice to Shiva but now my family wants us to stick with Mantras of Sugarland.

Some people and food touch our souls and Shiva has such a magical touch.Their kind hospitality and delicious food signifies the tradition in fine Indian dining. The soul touching Indian music played in the background makes me want to sit and enjoy each of the songs for the whole evening..The friendly smile from the Naan chef and the fluffy nans he cooks for us compliments each other. Pramod the manager is always pleasant and gives us a feeling of warmth each time we step into the restaurant. We love Shiva and their delicious food. Good luck on their venture at Sugar land .

I enjoy any kind of good food and Shiva's delicious menu offers Indian cuisine at its best. After reading positive reviews about Shiva and hearing praises from friends in Houston I sought out this restaurant??s lunch buffet. The restaurant is tucked away in Rice Village close to Kirby and the Medical Center by Rice University. Parking can be a problem in the Rice Village area.
The buffet was very flavorful and done right. The dishes of chicken & lamb were great. However, there was only one rice dish . The service was attentive and the price of the buffet was good. . Overall this restaurant is a good choice for lunch and a sit down dinner.

Located in the Rice Village, Shiva is a treat in an area known for diverse cuisines. They offer daily lunch buffet presenting both vegetarian and non-vegetarian entrees. Their menu is quite large and offers plenty for both those that are experienced with Indian food and also offerings for the less adventurous. Travelling from the cold weather of Alaska to Houston??s warm weather, we wanted to have the taste of India in its authentic form. The menu offers many of the age-old Indian favorites that myself and my wife longed for. Popular items include Chicken tikka masala, lamb Roghan josh, Bhaingan Bhartha and Gobi aloo. Rice pudding was the best. Healthy, tasty and fresh food at a reasonable price is hard to find. Shiva surely has it all.

Being an individual with taste to different cuisine and valuing their authenticity I have visited various restaurants. Indian food being one of my favorite I have visited many Indian restaurants in Houston and other states, but I have had the homely feeling and mouth watering taste only at Shiva. Be it their Rice Village location or Sugar land location food is always authentic, flavorful and delicious. I have always loved their Chicken Korma from the Rice village location. Recently I had my birthday party catered from their Sugar land location, I received many compliments for the food and the Mehti mattar paneer topped it all. Any one who does not like vegtable, must try the vegeterian dishes at Shiva and believe it or not will learn to love the vegetable diet. The wait staff was been attentive and very helpful in picking out the menu. The added advantage is the buffet where I could try many dishes at a very reasonable price.

I strongly feel these dumb people who wrote a review does not even know whats Indian food. Mixing rice with some chilly powder and heating up is not Indian Flavor, please get to know how Authentic Indian food tastes like and then you know what to write. Just having in a posh location just keeps on bringing in the shopping crowd, is what Shiva restaurant is cashing in. I am from out of town, and this is the worst food I had ever. Ambience is really good, what good it is without proper taste, I am a food lover and I go to any extent of miles to search a real good restaurant. I will post if I find one good one locally. Until then keep hunting for a Spizeeeee Indian one. Bye. - Hari

If you had to remember the best thing you had in this totally gem of Indian restaurant it would be the preparations from its tandoor!!! There are numerous Kebabs and roasts offered in the menu but juicy Tandoori chicken is the one you really shouldn't miss, not to forget the wonderful creations of mouth watering Naans. specially the garlic naan.
Apart from the Tandoori items, their Murgh Makini (Butter Chicken) and Murgh Korma (chicken in cashew nut sauce) are fantastic. There are also a number of north Indian vegetarian dishes like Saag Paneer (spinach with home made cheese)
The Goa Jhinga Curry stands out amongst all the shrimp preparations. Desserts are just wonderful. Rice pudding is my favorite. Must try the Mango Lassi, a delicious yogurt drink , which is just the best.
Wait staff is friendly. Owner is accommodating and kind. He prepared the special Indian tea from scratch for my grandparents.
Recommendation : Fridays Saturdays and Sundays will require reservation, or be prepared to wait for at least 30 to 40 minutes.

As we walked in the door, the musky aroma of Tandoori chicken wafted into our noses. We stole a glance and smiled -- this was going to be good. We were seated swiftly, swept into a tiny, romantic booth where the candles gave off just the right light and our knees touched just often enough to share the excitement in our bellies. Our waiter approached, a pleasant, well-dressed man in his 40's; tall, bald, and with a smile that could light the world on fire. I told him with a wink that we had a novice in our midst. With a knowing glance, he made some recommendations and was on his way. The anticipation was almost too much to bear.

We waited, aching, for our server to arrive. Much, much sooner than we expected, he approached us with a tray of delights fit for a king. Trembling, we thanked him, and I watched breathlessly as my lover lifted the first bite to his lips -- I could barely stand it! As he closed his mouth over the tip of the fork, I saw his eyes close and his head fall back as if all the weight of the world had suddenly escaped him.

Not wanting to miss out, I took my first bite. At that moment, it was as though my body had been launched into the stars and my soul transported directly to the gates of heaven. I gasped, the velvet flavor engulfing me, and I too closed my eyes and smiled in reckless abandon. I was hooked. We both dove back for more, hardly able to restrain ourselves against the intoxicating fragrance and textures that had ravaged us just moments before. We barely spoke; exchanging the occasional glance, we knew there wasn't time to be wasted. Before long, our plates were empty and our bellies were full. My lover took my hand in his, looked deep into my eyes and thanked me for such a transcendental experience. Spiritually exhausted as well, all I could do is nod. Silently, we basked in the glow of the candlelight.

Soon, the check arrived. Such a small pittance for such unbridled ecstasy. Sigh. I'll be back again.

I have always loved Shiva's food. Last month we celebrated my sister's wedding anniversary. The food and wait staff were from Shiva. The food was excellent, especially the Saag Paneer and the Chicken Korma.
We had guests from out of state who came to attend the occasion. They all loved the food. My mother loved the Daal Makhni and Gulab jamoon. The wait staff was very attentive and took care of the party. I could focus on other details with the party. I would recommend this place for any occasion and for Indian food.

Shiva is our new favorite Houston Indian restaurant. We love the food, the quality of the meat, the atmosphere, the staff - especially the Indian man behind the glass cooking naans and meat in the tandoor!
We dont love the decor, but we put up with it becase everything else is so great!

This place rocks!

ate here for mother's day. the restaurant was only half full but service was terribly slow. host (owner?) was not very friendly and seemed disinterested, only wanted to take our order as fast as possible. it took 30-40 minutes for our food to arrive. parties that had arrived before us (and ordered more) had their food before us. it was a little puzzling. i have to question the cleanliness of this restaurant, as my dining guest noticed the host picking his nose in front of customers! now to the food: we ordered the 'chef's recommendations' plates: raj ke pasand and shiva's delight. they are both all inclusive meals with naan (bread), yogurt, daal, palak paneer. the shiva delight plate is a vegetarian plate and included a samosa and some type of veggie curry. the raj ke pasand included a piece of tandoori chicken and a bowl of chicken tikka masala. both plates came with desert (rice in sweet milk). total came to $26 without tip. we didn't have drinks. the food was average although the chicken tikka masala and the fresh buttery hot nans were high points. would not go again, i am a stickler for cleanliness and timely service.

This is a great place to eat. We love indian food. The atmosphere is nice, service OK, but the food is great.
If you like indian food, try this place. We have eaten indian food at al places in Houston, and this is our favorite.

Pros: Food

.

For non-vegetarians, the restaurant has quite a few choices in meat dishes, but as for vegetarians, they were about three to four dishes to choose from in the buffet. The saag paneer was pretty good, nothing remarkable though.

I am from out of state and went to Shiva recently for the lunch buffet based on reviews I read in this site. I have to say that the food here is average - nothing out of the ordinary. I liked the bread they served but was disappointed that there were no appetizers in the buffet. If you are in the area, i think for the price the lunch buffet is decent

The service was good and food was decent, however they did not have the dishes I desired. Overall it would be a decent place to go if I really craved insian food, however it wouldnt be my top choice unless they added a few tempting dishes to their menu such as Palak Paneer, Malai Kofta, and Paneer Pasanda.

Cons: Not that many dishes that I prefer

Being someone of South Asian origin from NY, I've had my fair share of indian food. This food is average at best. Also the service is lacking. On the two times that I've been there, we waited 15 minutes for someone to take our order, then by the time we were finally done, with dinner it took another 15 minutes for someone to actually bring our check. If you are short on time, don't go here.

I've frequented this restaurant several times, and every time I'm left thinking "it was ok, not great". I've had my fair share of Indian food in Boston, NYC, Dallas, and SF, and I have to say that I'm surprised that Shiva has repeatedly won Reader's choice: Best Indian Food. Then again, I can't say this place is bad because otherwise I wouldn't continue to go back, but I'm just saying don't expect to be blown away.

I have been to Shiva several times and it smells like sewage when you enter. It makes me question the cleanliness of the restaurant. Last time I went, I walked in and there was the terrible foot smell again. Then, you walk further and they light all these strong, perfumed candles to try and cover up the smell but they were also so strong that it was uncomfortable to breathe. We had to leave. What is the deal Shiva?????....fix the smell...it is gross. I can?t come back till it?s clean.

I have recently discovered the joy of Indian food so we have been frequenting many Indian restaurants around town. We began eating at Shiva once or twice a week. The Dum Aloo and Malai Kofta dishes are pretty good. BUT... a few weeks ago, we went to have dinner on a Thursday evening. I went to the restroom to wash my hands before our food came - while I was washing, one of the bus girls came in to use the restroom. I decided take a minute longer to dry my hands and see if the girl washed her hands. To my horror, she exited the restroom stall and went straight out the door, back to work!! All of these bus girls pour your water, serve papadum and naan, and bring food to your table if the waiter doesn't. Shiva needs to teach the staff to Wash Their Hands if they go anywhere near the food. I know scarier things can happen in restaurants.. but this is just gross.

I enjoy Indian food, but I really loved eating at Shiva's. Everything from the appetizer to the end of the spicy entrees were wonderful. The chicken came out looking like a volcano created the dark red sauce and it tasted just as hot. I was sweating from the spice but unable to remove myself from the dish. The bread was perfect for sopping up the sauce and complemented the rest of the food well. Samosas are a definite must for an appetizer. Go to Shiva's and have something hot and spicy!

The food is great. I love the vegetable samosa appetizer and the murgh tikka masala entree, which is chicken in a tomato cream sauce. They have so many great things to choose from and the staff is so attentive. It is a great place to go with friends or a romantic dinner.

Pros: food, price, service

In my opinion, the price for the buffet was more than I was planning on spending. But the food was absolutely delicious. I particularly enjoyed their naan; it was very fresh and cooked well. The staff is always friendly and they're very focused to make your visit to the restaurant as pleasant as possible.

I discovered this place by accident. I now, cannot stop visiting this place. I was hungry, looking for a place to eat, in the Rice Village, and I saw this restaurant that was situated across Le peep. I walked in and the aroma of spices hit me. Needless to say, I had a great meal. The food was fresh and the prices very moderate. The staff was attentive, yet not overbearing. The buffet has great variety of fresh fruits, salad, dessert and of course the mouth-watering curries.
Strongly recommend this place. Great meal at affordable prices.

PROS: Great authentic Indian Cuisine at reasonable prices
CONS: Parking can be challenging-yet well worth the effort

Shiva is a classic Indian restaurant in the Rice Village with simply the best North Indian food. Here you can find the culinary art of Indian civilization gracefully blending with the taste of mordern presentation of their Indian cuisine. Very pleasant, accomodating wait staff is a plus point to this restaurant. A shared starter of juicy Tandoori chicken, tandoori lamb and shrimp with grilled onions - a wide range of spices, a hint of pepper on the lamb are delicious. The portions being large sure made me feel lucky as I could box it up. My snacking on the way home did not even allow me to get home to finish up the rest. I would definitely recommend this place to any one who loves Indian food

This is really my favorite place to eat Indian food. It seems to me like they take alot of care to keep the food cosistently good here. I have been about 4 or 5 times and the food is always top notch. My favorite is the murgh madras which is basically the same as the murgh tikka malai (big chunks of white meat chicken broiled in the tandoori), except the murgh madras has the chicken sitting in hot 'n' spicy curry sauce. You can't go wrong with the DAL MAHARANI, (Black lentils and red beans simmered with spices). It tastes really good with the naan. The only thing is I can't eat their as much as I like because its a little out of my price range.

All I have to say about the food, dining experience, service....all was exceptional. Two of my colleagues and I had gone in after work, I went in with a terrible attitude, but came out with a smile. The waiters were very nice and helpful, the food was exquisite ( I ordered the chicken tikka masala, naan, and rice)...and it was all very mellow so our moods could lighten up. This is the type of restaurant everyone wants to go to.

A friend and I dined here recently and, although the food was wonderful, the service was sadly lacking. We had to wait a ridiculous amount of time for everything- drinks, food, the check, etc. Our server also had a poor attitude when we asked him if he could box up our leftovers to go. I definitely won't be going back.

PROS:
CONS: Parking is hard unless you get valet across the street from them.

I found Shiva about 3 years ago when I worked in the medcenter area and have frequented it ever since. Their lunch buffet is one of the best I've tried & their dinner menu is excellent. The vegetable pakora and samosas are excellent as are their Dil-Pasand, Vindaloo, Masala and Madras curries. Don't even get me started on the veggie dishes (saag paneer) and naan. The wait staff/service is excellent. I recently held a dinner party for my husband at the Times location and they did a wonderful job! They took my suggestions, modified the quantities for the number of people I was inviting and put together a wonderful party. I highly recommend this restaurant for lovers of Indian/spicey food.

Wow! I can say with 100% certainty that this is my favorite restaurant in Houston! Food here is nothing short of amazing. Very intimate dining experience and perfect to bring a date to. I usualy order the Tandori Grill which for $13.99 gives you a ton of food! It includes 3 pieces of chicken, 2 lamb pieces, 2 shrimp, Indian Chili, Fresh Nan Bread, and a dessert which is a sweet rice in coconut milk. The nan bread is my favorite part and is made fresh when you order it. Service is very good and they are very attentive. The other thing I would recommend is the rice. It is made with Safron and is amazing. Long story short, if you are in the mood for Indian, this is truly a no brainer!!!
