Was once one of our family favorites. Seems to have gone down in quality lately. Our sandwiches were little more than cold-cuts on pre-sliced bread. They also seem to have lost some of their really good employees. There was low turnover there for a long time. Now it's a different group every time we visit.

The french fries are still good. But we were especially disappointed in our ceasar salad. The lettuce was old, and the entire salad seemed to have been made the day before.

Great location - hopefully they'll pull it back around.

As of the 19th I heard that the North Central Market will stay open until 10 pm. I shop late so this is wonderful!!
Also, I am always completely amazed at their produce aisle. They are the Best!

Central Market is a great place to go, whether you want to order off a menu or create your own salad or pasta dish. It is always a great quality and I would definatly recommend it to anyone that I meet.

I do most of my grocery shopping here. They have a wonderful baked goods section and their produce cannot be beat. They have a great bulk section and some wonderful coffees. There is a playground and deck outside for enjoyment. On the weekends they have live music.

Central Market has the best selection of produce in town. They are ripe and big and not all banged up like regular grocery store produce. Their fresh meat section will make your mouth water. They really have top of the line foods. They have a large beer section, as well as a flower section for fresh flowers.

There's the best sampling of chocolate in Central market ever. Most of it is over priced since it came from out of the country. But it's wonderful. They've got a wide variety of fine candies.

Central Market is a great place to eat for both families and those who appreciate the finer things. When I went to UT, my friends and I would often go there for their great atomosphere and good food. It's a great place to people watch and offers a more wholesome environment than say that of Riverside

I used to live in Austin TX and for quite a while I worked downtown. When work was done at 5pm, there was NO WAY I was getting on I35. Instead, I would spend 45 minutes or so picking up dinner at Central Market. I'd start by walking through the wonderful produce section, sampling fresh fruit juice and whatever exotic fare they were featuring that day. Then a walk through the meat and fish counters, and hopefully more sampling of grilled meat or fish. Often I would stop in the liquor section for a bottle of wine, and I'd NEVER pass up the tortilla samples right past the bakery case. We'd have tamales for dinner quite frequently as Central Market's were quite flavorful. By the time I got on the highway, I was full and a much friendlier driver...it was a miracle if i was hungry again by the time i got home!

PROS: selection, variety, quality
CONS: expensive for normal stuff

Shopping at Central Market has always been a treat for the senses - the crisp green smell of the vegetables and fruits, the colorful bins of dried and fresh peppers, the discombobulatingly long cheese aisle ... but the best thing about Central Market which, in my opinion, makes it a wiser shop than its competitor, Whole Foods, is the reasonable pricing. I can find many of the same items at Central Market that I do at HEB (Central Market's parent store), for the same price - and everyone in Austin knows that HEB is known for having the lowest prices. Employees are always helpful. HUGE selection of coffee, rices, beans, nuts, and other bin items. Excellent selection of wine and beer, including local fare. Meat is always fresh, and there's always an abundant supply of fresh seafood. And then there's the fabulous fresh flowers, three bunches for $12. The first and last stop if you're giving that special dinner party.

PROS: Good prices, vast selection of items, nice employees, kid-friendly cafe
CONS: Only open until nine o'clock p.m. - what's with that, Central Market?

Central Market is one of the best natural and organic grocery stores in Austin. I used to go by and buy fruit after long bike trips, and I loved to sit inside the store and just watch the people who came in. The selection is one of the best in Austin, and the store always feels welcoming to me. Plus, if you get hungry from your food shopping, they have a great cafe.

PROS: fresh produce and meat, great selection of gourmet and health foods
CONS: Can be pricey. Dessert bakery a little disappointing.

CM is owned and operated by San Antonio-based HEB Food Stores. In true Texas fashion, CM is a place where the bigger is better philosophy rules. The produce section alone is larger than most neighborhood grocers and the selection in every section is astronomical in scope. Be warned- the store is specifically designed to herd you through a maze that takes you past everything it has to offer. Its easy to get lost on your first visit, but after a few trips, you get the lay of the land

Forget hurrying at CM. Even after you become familiar with the store, once youre inside, its easy to dawdle and love every minute of it. The produce section seems to change content and configuration at least once a month, and its human nature, especially for fresh veggie fans to spend extra time examining new offerings and reading the various printed preparation recommendations posted near the more exotic offerings. Then there are the countless sample stations set up about the store with white-coated attendants cheerfully shoving food at you. Its easy to get seduced by their offerings and wind up spending $5 for a locally produced jar of salsa. Strangely enough, Ive never been disappointed with any of my purchases prompted by sampling at CM. In fact, I have more often than not become a devoted fan of the product.

If I have found any weaknesses at CM, they are few. Being a coffee-fueled maniac, Im a bit disappointed in their whole bean coffee selection. The turbo blends that one would find at Wheatsville or the apocalyptic Whole Foods are missing. You pretty much get straight Columbian, Mexican, etc. Dropped the flavored garbage, folks.

Another little frustration is finding plastic bags in the bulk section. Rather than keep bags on every aisle, they just keep them on one, and the bulk staff, like mischievous little gremlins, seem to always keep changing that one aisle, so you spend a lot of time looking for a bag to put your trail mix in.

PROS: Great Produce, Wine, Salad, and Meat Sections. Awesome Service
CONS: Bakery is Weak on Selections, as is Bulk Coffee. Need more bags in bulk

I am very loyal fan of the market itself but the cafe is strictly ok. Their Chicken tenders, the portobello sandwich are almost tasteless and overpriced. The Thai chicken pizza is quite good at westlake but mediocre at north lamar. Their greek salad is good but the asian salad is too pungent. The turkey Havarti sandwich is tasty but a tad too dry. Their fries are very good only when they serve them hot; I have gotten them pretty cold too!
Overall, its a great atmosphere; sometimes their specials are good but I think for a cafe, they are a little pricey. Their need to revamp their menu a little bit and make them tastier.

Central Market's wedding flowers are the world's worst. They care nothing about proportion (size of arrangment to size cake it's going on), their flowers shed dreadfully, and they die within hours. The heads of the roses just flop over and they're the worst quality anywhere in Austin.

If you haven't checked out CM's floral department for a special event give them a call. We used them for our wedding day and had outstanding flowers. Guests were blown away by the quality and arrangements of our flowers. To this day we still receive compliments on them and the best part is they didn't break the bank! I would use them again in a heartbeat!

I'm not sure if this would be a great place for visitors because there are Central Markets in other parts of the state. I lived in Austin for 5 years and I was very sad to leave because I do love Central Market, but I live in Houston now, and we have 2 of them here, so although the store is really awesome, I am not sure I would consider it a tourist attraction.

I think Central Market is a great place to eat. They have so many things to choose from on the menu. You can stick with your favorites, or be pleasantly surprised by a new choice. The only slight drawback for me is finding a place to sit, especially when they're busy. However, that alone has never stopped me from visiting this fine eatery. Great place to take visitors! It's SO Austin! :)

Central Market has great food, it is fun for kids, good live music and a wonderful outdoor seating area. They have struggled in the past, however, with their service. Don't get me wrong, the people that take your order at the counter are friendly and competant and quick. It is the time that it takes for you to get your food. The system is the box that you take back to your table that lights up and buzzes when your food is ready. I have literally waited 45 + minutes for a burger! There is light at the end of the tunnel - the last couple of times that I have been there, it has been quicker and more efficient. I think that soon enough, they will get the hang of it! In the meantime, be prepared to wait - this is NOT fast food!

First the positives...

Outstanding Meat, Seafood, Cheese, Fruits/Vegies, and Wine/Beer, coffee selections. Really all selections are good throughout the store.

The negatives...

Layout of the store/isles leaves something to be desired. Customer service is mediocre (excluding the meat/seafood dept.) Need more checkouts.

Overall the products will bring people in. But the cumbersome layout and mediocre customer support may not have repeat first time customers. I will return b/c I love the selections but they should keep in mind customer service as well.

Luckily, Central Market is expanding to places like Dallas and Fort Worth. The selections are great from jam to beer. The problem lies in the regular big grocery store items that most family use at least some of. But that is minor compared to the great walk-through experience of shopping at Central Market. And added 'thumbs up' to their informed staff.

A great place to shop -- and look at girls. Great wine and beer selection. Great selection of cheeses too, if you're into that. They make their own tortillas. Good floral selection.

Great place to drink coffee on the patio, read the paper and watch dogs play in the lawn.

BUT, don't expect to find your favorite General Mills cereals, pet food, Fritos or toilet paper. Have to go to another place for your hegemonic groceries.
