Oh my goodness! Silk Road has the most beautiful fabrics. I bought some beautiful organic cotton for a baby sling and silk and organic hemp for a flower girl dress. Only downfall is how much money I spend each time I walk in the door but because I just want it all!

If you think Austin doesn't have a real fabric store, you haven't been to Silk Road. These folks have fabric TO DIE FOR!!! Whether it is an Italian Renaissance brocade for a killer doublet, or real Bemberg rayon lining for a custom tailored suit, or bone buttons--not the cheap plastic junk--you GOTTA check out Silk Road.

Don't be fooled by the little cottage--it is PACKED with rolls of fabric. You want linen for re-enactment historical clothing? They got it. You want embroidered silk for a wedding dress? They got it. You want exotic blends of natural fibers? They got'em.

I just wish they had the room to stock wool suiting, but I can go to Houston for that.

And the owner and her clerks are very old-fashioned, wait-on-the customer friendly. Don't expect to pop in and buy fabric and get out in 10 minutes--this is NOT Target! But then, you can't get in and out of Hancock in 10 minutes either, these days.

Only shop here if you can't find what you need anywhere else. The prices are ridiculous. A cotton print I looked at was 14.95 yd. I found the same exact fabric elsewhere for $6.95 yd. Silk chiffons are at least four times the price I found them online. The service is nothing to get excited about either. I bought some dye and told the salesperson there that I had never used it before. She told me the instructions were on their website and the maker's website. I could not find the instructions on either one, and to boot, I needed additional supplies, which she didn't offer. At their prices, I would expect better service at least. Try Fannie's on S Lamar if you are looking for dupioni, online for chiffons, and for cotton prints try a quilting store or online.

Pros: good selection

Cons: too expensive, poor service

This is the perfect place for special occasion fabric. They carry a wonderful selection of silks in many weights and colors as well as beautiful notions. The prices are a little high so do not recommed for your very first sewing project but if you are looking for something special, this is the place.

This is an upscale fabric store. They specialize in very fine natural fibers. I was pleased with the variety and colors of beautiful silks that they had in stock. The staff was very nice. Prices were high, but the quality was top notch.
