Okay, for bland TexMex for people with the bar really low, this will do. I have never been there when there were not quite a few people there--and I just don't get it. Today my fav place here in Longview (El Sombrero...with white queso...white queso beef enchiladas, yummie) was closed for the holiday and I was in the mood for Mexican food big-time. I thought surely I had remembered wrong about Papacita's because their parking lot was packed, again (have been there before for get-togethers). I went in with an open mind, but I was far from impressed. Their staff is nice enough (and someone else wrote seemed stoned or drunk, but I didn't get that impression--liked the staff and service), but their food was just awful. The queso was watered down and would not stay on a chip unless you got the skim. The rice is way overdone (like El Charito rice in the frozen food section of your local grocery store, all mushy). The beans were okay--hard to screw up beans--and the chips had some kind of strange dusting on them that I did not care for. The beef enchilada was fair, but the con carne was so watered down I had to ask for some more--what was there had pretty much slipped off to the sides). One thing about the staff is they bring you way more than you need when you ask for something. Normally that should be a good thing; but it was just me, by myself, and I don't need 50 jalapenos and a full ramekin of con carne--a few and some would have done nicely. (And the consistency of the con carne was kind of odd. Made me think it had cornstarch in it to thicken it, but I'm no cook--just was, well, different and not very flavorful.)

Okay, you think, well, maybe this place is a good family place. Well, I guess so (lots of babies and small children running around). Don't think it's going to be cheap, though (unless kids eat free--and this is just the kind of place that should push that promotion). I had one margarita (eh, okay--not worth over five bucks, though) and the cheapest lunch special (5.99) and a small queso and I got out of there for $18 ($2 tip...I was not feeling generous). That's for one. I think that's kind of pricey for what I got (I did get it to go because I have five dogs, outside dogs), and I won't be making the mistake of going there again.

But I don't feel the same way many people feel, apparently. Like I said, they are always packed. Maybe all those people are really in a parallel universe that I can only see in Papacita's and in that universe, the food is really good!

I must admit, the flour tortillas are good--they make them there. Not good enough to draw me back, however. And the next occasion that arises and Papacita's is the meeting place, my RSVP will be a resounding "Oh, I hate I'm going to miss the...." I'm sure they wouldn't want me back anyway, after this review. Sorry Papacita's, I wish it could have been love. :(

The food at Papacitas is great, it's just the staff that needs to be replaced. Not only are most of the waitstaff high, they get high at work. I have had several waiters who were drunk. Very professional. The owner needs to wise up and see what is really going on.

I like Papacitas because they serve exellent mexican food. I myself haven't been in quite awhile, but I sure would like to go back soon! If you are ever in the Longview area, or live there, you should go try it when your craving good mexican food!
