If I could give this place negative stars I would. This place is where animals come to get treated by a heartless, money hungry piece of sh*t "vet". My cat went in extremely sick and had to be euthanized. Unfortunately pets do get sick and sometimes this happens I understand but this "vet" and office doesn't care about anything but trying to make money any way possible. The dr didn't seem to care that I was putting my pet down who had become my child practically over the years. Even while waiting for my poor baby to feel the effect of the sedation they made me pay for the services right then and there. Also she kept checking to see if my cat was asleep yet bc it was about closing time and I was the last pt there. She seemed to just want to kill my cat make the $140 for putting her down and go on about her weekend. Meanwhile she, her staff and her dogs are making an incredible amount of noise that my cat couldn't peacfully let the sedation do its job. The last few moment of my cats life were not the way I wanted it to be. They could've been respectful about it and understood that someone was losing a part of their family. Once it was done she was out and didn't seem the least sympathetic. I fail to understand how a vet- a person who is supposed to have compassion and love for all animals-can be so heartless and greedy. I am still traumatized to this day about that day. I can't take it out of my mind. If I have one regret it's taking me cat to that place to have that piece of trash vet/person murder my baby. I say murder bc it didn't seem she was doing it out of what was best for the animal but to find a way to make money on her last appointment of the day that made her stay late. I would've perfered to put a bullet in my cats head myself, at least I would have done it out of love and compassion to end her suffering. Stay away from this pet hell. Surely u wouldn't want your pet to be another victim of this monster. Save yourself the heartache and avoid this place at all costs.

The vet might be the best, in the world, but office personnel and policies do make a difference. This has been my choice of veterinary clinics since the 1980's when it was Dr. Kellogg's. I am deeply disappointed in the way it has changed. I had an emergency in which I needed to have my injured dog euthanized. In my rush to get the dog there I left my wallet at home. In spite of my long patronage they allowed my dog to suffer until he finally died-while I went home to get my wallet. I understand it is a business, but please have pity and don't take my oversight out on the poor animal. I mistakenly gave them a second chance. I was led to believe by office personnel that my puppy had been spayed, but the dr. wasn't sure. There was some confusion as to who the original owner was as I had found her close to my house-a dog dumping zone. A few months later the dog showed all the signs of going into heat. I had surgery recently and asked if a family member could drop the dog off after they dropped me off at my appt. I called 2 different times and spoke with 2 different people and never once did they tell me it would be $150 just to drop her off. I called from my appt to say I would come as soon as I had seen my dr, but they refused. Animals are no longer their main focus. Won't go back.

The Staff was good except for one that had a lot to say and talked over the Dr. The Dr was ok did take the time to explain things, but at first didn't even try to go into the room and see my Walle. Starting barking orders of test he really didn't need. Finally when I asked to see her to explain why I was there she realized my dog needed something else. When it came to deciding to save my Walle they became amendment on payment first before anything when I told them I couldn't I afford it, right away told me only option is to euthanize. Then one of the receptionist at the end of putting my Walle to sleep had the nerve to tell me that I was neglectful and I should love my pets. I thought to myself how dare you judge me, when you euthanized my Walle because I couldn't afford it and they didn't accept a payment plan.

I just moved back to the valley, and I found the vet clinic for me! My dog is super happy when he sees that we're in the parking lot at the vet clinic because they always give him treats when he's done, and everyone there pets him and gives him tons of attention. When they have time, they'll even throw in a free nail trim!!!

Do not board your pet here!!! When we got our cat back, she was a sticky mess! Her medicine bottle was covered with her medicine and the syringe had not been rinsed out. The other medicine was a brand new bottle -- 30 day supply, but after only 6 days at SBAH, the bottle was nearly empty!! They use shredded paper instead of cat litter, some cats won't use it,so their explanation for the sleeping pad soaked in urine was that our cat wouldn't use the "litter" box, but yet they put the soiled pad back in the kennel and put her in it for the trip home!!! When we looked at this place we thought it would be a good place to leave our cat, but we were WRONG!!!!! Our cat will NEVER go there again!!!!

I came online to try and find some helpful information on where to take my new furry companion and after seeing the ridiculousness coming from the previous review I felt compelled to respond. Melba your review was of absolute No Help. So you thought your little dog's bill was too high- just on the account that it's a small dog?? Why don't you instead mention what your dog was getting treated for and let us decide if you were indeed overcharged. The other complaint is that the doctor is strongly pushing heartworm medicine?? You're kidding me right... I would think any sane person who liked their pets would be offended if the doctor Didn't stress the the importance of heartworm prevention, but that's just me I guess. Sorry to hear about the ticks, but this is the season for them and I would guess that's going to be an issue at any outdoor boarding facility. I personally have already been to this clinic once before but I live too far away to make it my main spot, needless to say my experience was enjoyable and I wouldn't mind making it my main vet location if it wasn't for the commute.

Alright where to start with this review... First of all I will start with Nancy the receptionist or lady in the front very rude. I first called this dr to inquire about progesterone testing and artificial inseminations for my two English bulldogs. Spoke to dr. Merritt and she says she knew how but had to order progesterone test to do tests. So I decided to take my dogs there for testing and all that. In order to leave them had to leave a big deposit first. I left my dogs Monday while they awaited the test to arrive. The test got there Wednesday and she did one test on them. Next test was going to be til Saturday. So my dogs were going to be there sitting there in their ugly and dirty boarding rooms while Saturday came. I decided to pick them up and for picking them up they released my pets and referred me to another dr saying I was being rude. I just did what made sense and wanted to have my dogs with me at home why have them in their dirty place with no supervision and no cleanliness in that place. After all their English bulldogs not your ordinary dog! All they wanted my money obviously they wanted me to leave my dogs their 3 days more so I could run up the bill. When I later called this dr and asked how much experience inseminating she had no experience. Well that is understandable she just graduated in June of 2010. Very uneducated no experience dr. Do not recommend anyone waste their time and money at this vet office go to Altas palmas never had a problem there. As for dr Merritt she's just taking over her dads business doesn't care about your pet all about the money!!

As a personal friend of Dr. Merritt's, I am aware of some changes that have recently taken place at her clinic. Dr. Merritt had to end a longstanding business relationship with an employee and it is clear that there is a disgruntled person who finds it necessary to post reviews which are untrue.

Additionally, my family and I have gone to San Benito Animal Hospital ever since I can remember and we are more than satisfied with their service. It doesn't matter what time of day it is, Dr. Merritt is always there to answer any questions me or my family have regarding any issues with our pets.

Dr. Merritt is upholding a legacy set forth by her father, Dr. Tewell and it is only natural that changes in the work environment will occur. Dr. Merritt was trained by the best and I truly couldn't recommend a more compassionate and caring veterinarian for your pet.

All of these reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt. We never know who is behind the screen :)

We had a rescue kitty (neutered elsewhere) that became very ill. We are attached to the pitiful thing which was at death's door. this Vet was very warm and truly seemed to care about the cat and us. All along the way we were kept abreast of the fees that we were running up. Where do you draw the line with love and euthanasia? Anyway, the Vet consulted other Vets and gave us options. Long story short, a kitty that was at deaths door on Thursday was home Saturday purring in remission. This is a good place...take your pets here to manage your animal health care dollars! As for the Vet (Dr. Merritt) a recent A&M grad, she has proven to be a compassionate knowledgeable sincere human being.

Altas Palmas is just a little more expensive but I will GLADLY pay more for the superior service and knowledge. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the doctors are caring and have many, many years of experience. It was a very pleasant experience. I am not comfortable with the san benito clinic anymore, they do not instill confidence and I love my dog too much to take any chances.

My dog boards there all the time, and I've never seen a tick on her!! The last client that wrote that comment below must have not been on tick prevention. I don't bring blankets for boarding because my dog chews them and pees on them. Most kennels don't allow toys and blankets anyways!

As for the client who wrote below: Altas Palmas is way more expensive, you idiot!!

I used to take my pointer there but the last two times she was there boarding she came back full of ticks and they could not find her blanket or toys (why weren't they with her?) When I called back to report the tick problem I was simply told that yes, they were having a tick problem...no offer of resolution. I now go to Altas Palmas. And yes, the staff is all new, Dr Tewells staff ran for the hills.

I have been coming to this vet clinic for years and always am impressed with how my cat and I get treated. We get treated like we're part of their family. The new vet, Dr. Merritt has been wonderful to me and my cat, Sophia. Sophia was very sick and vomiting a couple days ago, and Dr. Merritt gave her some medications and now she's all better. I would trust Dr. Merritt with any of my pets.

I am a new client, and I already LOVE this clinic. Dr. Merritt was very thorough with my dog, Max. She gave him a good physical exam and noticed that he had eye discharge that I didn't even notice until she showed me. After a week of eye drops, it cleared right up. The prices are very fair and I think I've found a new great vet clinic to go to!
Dr. Merritt really gave me some good advice when I asked her questions about training my dog. She's great!

Dr. Merritt and Dr. Cruz are both great vets! Both of them work at this vet clinic. The staff has been there for years, and I always get treated well. My puppy, Sam, loves going there because they are always very gentle with him. He had an ear infection and after one week, it cleared right up with Dr. Merritt's help.

I meet Dr. Cruz there on a Saturday and he was GREAT! But when I went back for a recheck Dr. Merrit was there and I found out Dr. Cruz doesn't really work there he was only filling in. Dr Merrit had no idea what was going on with my dog and didn't bother to read the chart from the previous visit. My dog is a bit hyper and she started talking about needing to do a heartworm test so she could sedate him, HUH? We didn't need to sedate him the first time and I was there for a RECHECK, not a heartworm test!! She looked like she didn't know what to do and she never touched my dog. To make a long story short I left and went to Weslaco to see DR CRUZ!!! He is now my vet. He is calm, cool, and efficient! I also noticed that all of Dr. Tewells original staff is GONE, including Dr. Downey...that tells me something. BEWARE!!

Dr. Merritt saved my puppy's life! He was dying of Parvo, and very very sick. She cared for him so well and even came up in the middle of the night to check up on him at the vet clinic and give him more medicines. She is such a nice vet, and my puppy is happy too.

I have been a client at SBAH for years. Sadly, Dr. Tewell passed away and now his daughter Dr. Merritt works there. I just met Dr. Merritt last week for the first time, and she is very nice. She told me how great it was to meet me and smiled a lot. My dog, Bruno was pretty sick, and she cared a lot about him and his health. He is doing much better now, and the bill was much lower than I expected.

I am a new client, and I love this vet clinic! I saw a $10 off coupon in the newspaper for new clients, and I just got a new dog from the humane society. Dr. Merritt was very friendly and nice and loved petting my new dog, Emma. Emma had a skin infection, but the bill was very reasonable and the skin infection cleared up within 4 days! She even shook my hand and told me it was nice to meet Emma and I. The staff was very friendly to Emma and I, and one of the technicians even gave Emma a kiss on her head.

After reading the review below I still decided to take my dog to this vet. There ws a $10 off coupon in the newspaper for new clients so why not give a try right? WRONG! Receptionist was great and took us to a room to get started on paperwork. Dr Merrit came in after and I could immediately tell she was afraid of our dog as she kept her distance while I tried to show her my dogs ear infection. She didnt greet my dog or show any compassion towards him. My dog was barking up a storm as he loves attention. She asked that I go out of the room to speak to her and started to try and sell me heart guard and it's testing. I went in for my dogs ear and would have liked that to have been adressed before trying to get me to spend my money on something else. Meanwhile my husband was in the room and a tech approached him with a muzzle, my husband asked for a clean/ brand new muzzle because our dog also had ringworm on his face and we didn't want to make that worse by transferring something worn by many other dogs.. Tech must have gone back and told Dr Merrit that we refused a muzzle and she came into the room with an attitude saying " he needs to have a muzzle". we told her knew that but we asked for a brand new one. She leaves the room to search for a new muzzle and comes back with a brand new small lesh which looked like a piece of rope and said she didn't have a new/ clean muzzle and wanted to tie his mouth shut with the lesh!!!! Are you kidding me??? That's horrible and very cruel! With conditions like that we did our dog a favor a left the clinic. A real professional shouldn't have to use a muzzle. If you're scared of animals or large dogs why are you in business caring for them? I DO NOT recommend this place if you love your animals.

This used to be a good place but Dr Skip passed away and it has gone down hill. Dr Merrit has no people skills, seems very unsure, and wants to run every test invented to pad the pockets, ($230 bill for my dogs simple ear infection!) PRICES HAVE DOUBLED AND TRIPLED! Staff seems unhappy. Not a pleasant experience. I won't go back.

I took my dog, Sadie in for shots. Everyone that worked at the clinic was very knowledgeable and kind. Sadie was not even scared, and she even got a free treat from them when her shots were over.

I sure cant say anything bad, I have to praise SBAH. We bought a 2 mth old puppy in Progresso, 4days later she was nearly dead from Parvo. We rushed her to SBAH, and in 3 days she was wagging her tail, she is a survivor!! She was suppose to really not make it, but we had to let them try, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, SBAH FOR saving Sachas life. Monica Clancy

we are very happy and satisfied with this pet hospital. they have taken very good care of our "betsy". she is now 14 years old and has been going there since she was a baby. they even did surgery on her back. they are very good with each animal that oges there to them. they pretty much have a ono on one thing going with the pet owners.

We have taken all our pets to this vet. They have gotten all their shots through them. Also, when one of our dogs was hit by a car we rushed him over and they took great care of him. He suffered a broken leg, but they made it all better. They love going here. The price is reasonable as well.
