If disgusting is your acquired taste this is the place for you!! My friend gave me a $20.00 GC so I went to check it out, fish not fresh, octopus was rubbery, food is overpriced, service so so , but the food was awful! VOTED MOST DISGUSTING PLACE 2010 HANDS DOWN. NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN, not even if my friend give me a $100.00 GC to eat will I set a foot in this tasteless, five days old fish joint. Plain NASTY. I do not write much review, but this one I can?t resist ! TOMA MI*@#$#&@* ! ! Go to RA SUSHI or MIYAKO they have happy hr 1/2 price food and drink from 3 to 7 PM, twenty bucks you will be full and good and drunk!

Went to place so many times. It is a nice and cozy place. Food is great. Ordered bento box and sushi and both were very nice. I have to say one of the best Japanese restaurant I have been in Houston. Definetly recommended.

Pros: Nice food and nice people

Cons: Haven't found one

There are not enough bad things I can say about this restaurant. I went based on the positive reviews and was terribly disappointed. The booth seat had a hole in it, sign one that the management does not have pride in keeping things up. The soy sauce dish was dirty, and when I requested a clean one, the second was also dirty. Then came the food. I ordered some kind of spicy shrimp roll and the chili sauce tasted like smoky BBQ--really awful. My husband ordered a steak bento box which was just terrible. I saw him struggling to chew the meat with a terrible look on his face when I noticed that the hanger steak was dead raw in the middle. This is not a prime piece of meat, it needs to be cooked. The reason he could not chew it was simple--the silver skin they left on the steak is not meant to be eaten and the uncooked flesh was purple. We promptly told the manager and he joked that "they must have forgotten to cook it" before he took it off of our bill. That does not make up for the fact that we were so disappointed with every step of the meal we will never return, and if you like a clean environment in which to eat a properly prepared meal, I suggest you avoid it as well.

First off, the wait staff lol, the one waiter in the joint doesn't speak a lick of English. And the manager, she was no help at all, and I don't think she cracked a smile the entire night. Our order was totally screwed up and we waited more than 45 minutes to get the order. We dine out quite frequently and have to say this was probably one of the worst experiences ever at a dining establishment. This place is a mom and pop organization that's extremely unorganized and run with managers that are not well versed on handling a dinner rush.

I am disappointed to have to write this review. When this place was "Yan Sushi" it was an incredible value. I had eaten there for years. But with the new ownership has come falling standards for the quality of their sushi product. First, the cuts of fish you get are a lot smaller than they used to be. Second, all the fish tasted dry and not at all fresh. What a disappointment, I used to LOVE this restaurant. Now I would advise you to stay away and visit one of the other sushi places in the area. If you must eat at Tomo I would suggest the bento box meal -- you get a TON of food for a very reasonable price.

Fantastic, that's the word that comes to mind. I recently moved to the area and was in the mood for sushi, but wasn't sure where to go. As I was driving up Westheimer I saw TOMO to my left and decided to turn in. SO GLAD I did! I've eaten sushi all over Houston - cheap and expensive - and this place was the best tasting and best prices since HIDO near Willowbrook Mall. I do miss my hibachi there, but I have definitely found not only a replacement for my sushi cravings, but BETTER sushi and tastier rolls! The "Happy Hour" is wonderful. I went during this time and had a roll, 6 pieces of sushi, and a small hot sake for only $9! I was very pleased and can't wait to go back with my fiance'. I want to try so many things on the menu so I'll be back frequently. I just found my new favorite sushi place! I'm so exicted!!

I was very much a novice and uniformed at sushi and convinced myself it was a trendy phase that i would avoid. However eventually succumbed and went with a few of my 'experienced' friends to Tomo. I was instantly hooked. However there is a problem, if I want sushi I now cannot eat anywhere OTHER than Tomo. I have tried about 15 other sushi places in Houston, the expensive ones, the classy ones, the 'fusion' ones, the trendy ones and there is absolutely nothing that compares to tomo. The staff are more attentive and polite and helpful than anywhere else, the prices are more reasonable than anywhere else, the selection is terrific, the freshness is guaranteed and it is just sushi at its simpest and most unpretentious in Houston. Absolutely go - just know ahead of time you will find it hard to go anywhere else after you've tried there..

I have eaten Sushi coast-to-coast & many places in between. For value & quality, a great location in the heart of Montrose, & a very pleasant staff, Tomo rates number one on my list & is the default location for my weekly (sometimes bi-weekly) sushi addiction. I had just started going there a few months before they changed ownership, & I'm guessing there may have been some hic-ups at the time of the couple of negative feedbacks posted Sept/Oct 2007. All the other ratings confirm this must have been the case.
Sushi happy hour SEVEN days a week?? Even if you miss happy hour, $1.00 & $1.25 per piece Nigiri?? Any other sushi place in that area is like $2.50 or more PER piece!! A spider roll for like $5.75 is such a reasonable price, & the quality of the crab is superb in comparison to 90% of all the other places I have tried it at (I had stopped ordering this role at sushi restraints until I tried it at Tomo). All of their other specialty rolls are consistently $3-$6 less than those other places. Portions of the rolls are very nice, & quality is excellent. I don?t eat at sushi restaurants that don?t meet my standards for sushi quality.
I don't need to pay $17 for a sushi roll, $12 for 4 pieces of hamachi, $16 for 2 beers, AND have to pay some Joe 5 bucks to park my car just so I can "think" I'm cool (I already know I?m cool), being around all the snotty & arrogant attitudes in places like Rickshaw & Sage 400 (who really enjoys that??). At Tomo they know me by name, are very polite & friendly, & the sushi is of consistent quality.

Okay; well, let me set the story up for you.
It was my godbrother's birthday, and my godmother got him a fondue set in the shape of a Hershey's kiss for his gift. She asked me if I thought he would go for it as a dessert, and I was like, "No Way!!" A fondue set? For a beer guzzling, steak grilling, dog-loving man?! But we just HAD to do it at a sushi restaurant, because he LOVES sushi...
So, I call up Tomo - it's inexpensive, elegant, and relaxed. I asked the hostess if they could accommodate our fondue fantasy, and she immediately responded in the affirmative! She even offered to have the chef make a special fruit plate to serve at dessert for three. I told her that we'd provide the fondue set and chocolate (he likes a specific kind), and she called me back in an hour and a half quoting a really great price.
We get there around 6 pm (I told her to expect us at 8 pm), way early AND with an extra person, but she happily seats us anyways and they serve us the usual great food for dinner.
Then, when we were all stuffed, she brings out this BEAUTIFUL bridge-like plate of cheesecake bites, brownies, strawberries, bananas, AND a special sweet tempura roll stuffed with strawberries (it was like a softer, sweeter, less-messy funnel cake). Add some whipped cream and a tastefully placed candle, and VOILA!!
My godbrother was absolutely delighted, we were breath taken, and the bill was STILL under $100 (but pretty close, though). Needless to say, they got a bangin' tip, and won an already loyal customer over FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!
Thanks, Tomo (a.k.a. Yan Sushi)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pros: Great remodeling, the colors and lighting provide a nice, calm atmosphere.

Cons: I can't think of any, sorry!

I used to love going to Blue Fish House because of their 2 unique vegetarian rolls, but Tomo has blown me away with the off-the-menu Vegetarian Special roll. I frequent this place about twice a week, and my friends who have been newly introduced to Tomo also can't get enough of it. Great happy hour prices, wonderful waitstaff! Oh, and try the fried egg roll--a great price, and you get 4 huge flavorful rolls! Best egg roll in town. All in all, great restaurant! I am thinking about going tomorrow for lunch!

Overall, this was a great experience. VERY reasonably priced sushi, which tasted fresh. Tried the "fire edamame," which was slightly spicy and a good twist on it. They have an outdoor patio, which is very pleasant. I would definitely go back.

This is an excellent place for a large variety of fresh sushi's! I go there almost twice a week now, and each time was a great experience. The servers were always friendly and well knowleged of the menu, all recommendation came out to be just excellent. Now that they added a patio, it's really a great place to hang out with friends and enjoy a drink or two.

My boyfriend and I have been on a quest to find the best ( and most moderately priced) sushi in Houston and Tomo is it ! I have been eating at Tomo for over a year now and every roll I have tried has been delicious. Not only is the food good, but the staff is very friendly and attentive. I highly recommend stopping by !!

My husband and I love this place. Went there tonight and had a great dinner, both pleasantly full, under $40. How many quality sushi restaurants in Houston does that happen in?

While there we were saying that we should bring friends and family there more often--they're all stuck on the pricier sushi places nearby. Maybe we haven't yet because we feel we have found a hidden treasure. At any rate, the dining room was nicely busy and the parking lot quite a bit fuller than we usually see it; so I say: Get in there soon!

My wife and I have tried about 10 sushi restaurants since moving to Houston 6 months ago. We are big fans of Japanese food obviously... I don't know what the previous negative reviewer was on, but this place is excellent, especially for the price. We are regulars there now and the reason is because we are treated very well with extremely attentive service all the way from the owner to the busboy. Sushi is great -- big fat pieces of unagi for my wife and the salmon is the best I have found in town. Well executed special rolls and everything else is tasty. They have also recently added a four table deck area so we are looking forward to some warmer weather for some al fresco dining. Enjoy Tomo, you won't regret a visit, trust me.

I highly recommend this sushi restaurant to all my friends. They have very reasonable price and a lot of choices one sushi rolls. Especially, their special rolls are very creative and YUMMY. and they always have good weekly specials. The Staff are friendly, and the whole atmosphere is very relax. I used to go to this place when it was Yan Sushi and thoroughly enjoyed every experience. I don't know if with a new name came a new owner, but the quality has diminished. The lunch special nigiri sushi was what I got every time I went there and it was great. But the last few times I've gone the sushi wasn't cold, the pieces are half the old size and the miso soup tastes watered down like they used the previous day's supply. Had I written this review a year ago it would have been great, but after today's and the last few times' experience I will not be going back to this sushi place.

This is the only Japanese restaurant where I have actually hated the House Salad. The ginger dressing was gross.

I was also surprised to see how small the cut of sushi was. Yes, they may have lower prices but that is because you are getting less fish. I found my sushi to be average at best. I will say that the service was attentive and friendly.

I am glad I tried the Tomo, but I do not anticipate going back.
