Somewhere in the world it's five o'clock. Come into Mugsy's, the hidden gem right off of Kirby between Cafe Express and Dessert Gallery. This is the perfect place for happy hour after work or for a late night. With a casual and friendly neighborhood atmosphere, you're sure to have the best time. Gregg Alston, owner of Mugsy's (who named the bar after his father)has assembled the best staff in Houston. Try one of our specialty drinks, such as the Ruby Rick, The Red Apple Martini and many more unique concoctions. If you are a beer conossuier, we have the perfect beer to quench your thirst.

In Short
No password is needed to access this bygone-era establishment, but gentlemen must remove their hats before entering. Owner and full-time bartender Greg Alston (who named the bar after his father) honors the customs and styles of the Lost Generation while tending to the whims of Generation X. Two gold trimmed mirrors hanging on opposite brick walls reflect light from candles placed on every table, helping to set the mood. It's a great place for friendly (or romantic) conversation.

Key Points

  • Martini happy hour
  • Great spot for a date
  • Unique tucked away bar

The Inside Scoop

  1. Look Good - Check out the owner's other bar, Leon's Lounge.
  2. The Extras - Money back guarantee: if you can honestly say that the owner's bloody mary isn't the best you've ever tasted, he'll pay for it out of his own pocket.
  3. Know Before You Go - No food is served here but Cafe Express and Dessert Gallery, just around either corner, are open until 11pm on weekends.

Stopped in and got a drink with my wife and it was a cozy place. We in fact we had a nice time becuase it wasn't a loud bar, we could hear each other. the ambiance was like a old time bar.

Favorite bar

by bignish

I am a die hard regular at Mugsys. I started hanging out here because it was a friendly casual place to chill with friends. I continue going here because it very quickly becomes the place where everyone knows you and you can be comfortable with a dozen friends or by yourself.

Pros: Large drinks/shots. Good discounts for industry workers.

Cons: Can get a little loud on some friday nights.

Best bar EVER

by i_heart_beer

After reading "Upscale, yet not's" review...I am going to agree with everything except for the last line. I have met several people there, and am now friends with them. It is a friendly crowd, for sure. Yes, there are people "in groups", and when I go there I am normally with 6+people and see several more people I know. I go to Mugsy's at least once a weekend...if I am in town. It is a great spot, the bar tenders are nice, remember your name and beers are $3.50...you should check it out for sure...even if you are a tourist!

Pros: Great location, parking and people

Cons: It gets a little smoky after about midnight, but then they open the door :)

Best place to have a cocktail and play games!

by blpent

I love this place for all reasons: date night, happy hour, social scene, a chill out night playing games with friends, and any other reasons you can find. The bartender with the mustache makes a mean dirty martini and is a friendly as his bartending skills. Grab a friend and go to Mugsy's for entertainment of all types!

Pros: Games!!!!

Cons: A Little Smokey...
