LOVE the tortilla catfish with queso. Worth going just for that, but desserts and drinks are awesome too. Totally relaxed atmosphere but long waits on weekends or Thursdays! Great place for kids!

I have great memories of going to this place as a kid w/my dad. He worked at a shop not far from here, and in the summers I would go with him. This was our typical spot to have lunch at. Now with my own family, we love to come here.

If the biggest problems with a restaurant revolve around its popularity, that's not a bad problem to have.

Try the Fried Catfish with Queso for a delicious twist on an old standard.

It's great outdoor dining in a fun, casual setting, perhaps with a live band. How much more "Austin" do you need?

I've only been once, but have nothing bad to say. The hippie chick sandwich was great! Get the jalapeno dressing on the side and dip your sandwich in it. Yummy.

You come here for the hip spot, the music, the drinks but the food is just ok. I mean I have been here a dozen times and love the place but I've yet to eat anything I love (ok the frito pies are pretty good). Super place to catch live music or to come on a Sunday to recover from Saturday.
People watching is off the chain. My single brother in law almost passes out everytime we go there.
Good service, always friendly folks although busy busy.
Great location!

I love going to Shady Grove. It is one of the most relaxing places to eat, outside under the trees. The food and liquer are very tasty. My only complaint (and this is a big one) is that it is not unusual to wait over an hour and a half for a table. Oh and good luck finding a parking spot!

I love this place! The atmosphere outside is great and casual and relaxing. The food is also outstanding! I have loved everything I've tried.

Parking can be awful if you go on nights with live entertainment, but I tend to go here LATE, so parking has never been an issue!

The prices are good too!

Uniquely Austin atmophere with fun food. We enjoy taking out-of-town guests here. The wait is a bit long, but they have lots of tables where you can order drinks & appetizers while you wait. It's a must-visit!

I had not been to Shady Grove in a decade. When three of us finished watching the Saturday matinee of Porgy and Bess we thought we go have a good enjoyable meal. Of course, the girls taking names were friendly and helpful. They said we could sit in the appetizer area and order drinks and appetizers while we waited 30 to 40 minutes. We kept seeing this one guy serving the tables around us but never came to our table. I asked the lady who walks people to their tables to get someone. She said she would. Five minutes later I got up and walked inside to ask some guy if we order at the table or have to go somewhere. He was of no help. After about 30 minutes the one guy who seemed to be delivering all the food outside and (supposed to be) waiting on our area came to ask us if we wanted anything. We ordered sodas and tea and the "world-famous" nachos with beef. One minute later we have a table.
The nachos come and there were a total of 6 tortilla chips with a glob of nacho stuff. You're supposed to have ample chips and there really shouldn't be corn in it. That's just not right and more like world-infamous.
It looked like the inside dining area had 1 lady, like the 1 dude outside, doing everything. We joked to find something good to say about the meal and I said that the friend covering to the chicken fried chicken was excellent. Everything else was not.
This is my first negative review of any kind online. I just figure that these owners should hire more than 4 college students to serve a 100 patrons. I'm sure the wait staff are good; it's just management. And this will keep me away from Shady Grove for another 10 years.

Shady Grove continues to shine as one of Austin's best homegrown restaurants. Its amazing this place is closing in on twenty years and still continues to improve and impress. We also visited Shady Grove during the trail of lights and experienced a similar situation as stew, but it was the other customers that were the cause of the disappointment. My wife and I were shocked at the abundance of rude and impatient people who seemed to direct all of their pent up holiday anger on the Shady Grove staff. We sat at the bar and the barstaff and the food were wonderful. When hundreds of people flood into a small restauarant at the same time and believe that they are the only customer and then get upset when the experience isn't perfect should try and slow down and remember how fortunate we are to have a place like Shady Grove. A place that provides great food at a reasonable price, kid friendly, beautiful patio, great staff, and gives so much back to the community. Keep up the great work Shady!!! We still love ya!!!!

We waited almost 45 minutes to get seated on a busy Monday evening (Trail of Lights). We ordered appetizers that came at the same time as the main entrees, what a waste. By the time everybody had their plates in front of them, we realized there was no silverware. We asked the waitress for silverware, after 3 minutes we still had no silverware. We asked another waiter, who appeared a minute later with 5 sets of silverware, but we were 9 people at the table? We asked him what we are supposed to do with half the silverware missing, and that our food was cold by now. He started arguing with us, so we asked for the manager. She was all smiling and apologetic, but didn't really care.
So we ate our mediocre cold food, will not be back, that's for sure. This used to be a great place, but now it's just another shabby restaurant ripping off customers.

We went to this Austin institution based on recommendations from the locals. We went at 11:45 am on Firday. We beat the crowd! The Hippie Chick was deserving of all the positive comments. The veggies were wonderful and fresh and the addition of the thai chicken breast made it filling. We were very impressed with the salad dressings. I had the jalapeno lime dressing which had a kick. The pesto ranch was garlicky with the right texture. The jalapeno corn chowder was the soup of the day. Spicy and delicious. My mom ordered the fresh turkey sandwich. It was impressive. It was not the "rolled turkey" pressed meat that most restaurants serve. This was "pulled turkey" that was fresh roasted. We ordered some frings for our sons. The fries were so-so but the onion rings were battered perfectly and you could taste the onions. Just about the best rings I've had in Austin. The boys who ordered burgers were not really impressed with them. They went with a plain cheeseburger. I tried to get them to order the green chile cheese burgers but they are purists. Sissy ordered the chicken fried steak. She said it was tasty and not greasy. She especially enjoyed the gravy. It was silky smooth and set off the steak perfectly. By the time we left there were no parking spaces. We were thrilled we got in on a Friday lunch. Definitely sit under the tree, it is part of the ambience.

Cons: Hamburgers were "so-so".

Went late on a Sunday morning... hippie chick sandwich was very good, same w/ the catfish. Only disappointment is that they don't serve breakfast & their cobblers weren't anything outstanding. Other than that every thing else was above average. Good service, nice outdoor seating area. We will definitely return.

Shady grove is by far my favorite restaurant in Austin! The only problem I have is finding a parking spot. And the longest wait that I know for a restaurant. It doesn't matter if you come at an "offf time" (i.e. like at 2 or 3pm, 11am)... there will ALWAYS be a wait. So be prepared to wait and you won't be disappointed. I love the jukebox if I'm stuck indoors. Love the outdoor seating better. The food is great. Good prices, great portions. It is by far the best place to get food in Austin. Try it... you'll love it!

Shady Grove Rules!!!
I took some out of town guests in for lunch and we didn't want to leave. The brisket tacos were perfect, hippie sandwich delish, and the catfish too good!! I will take everyone I can to this place, can't beat the food or the vibe, thanks for a great time!

The chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken were delicious, and the mashed potatoes were terrific. We had a bit of a wait, but it was Friday night--no surprise. The decor is interesting, and the portions were generous but not insane. The only real misstep was that the waiter forgot to deliver a drink, even after a rather lengthy conversation about the selection. Still, they took it off the bill very quickly.

I think this place is a little overhyped. The food and service are great but nothing too special. I do recommend the Hippie Sandwich. It's delicious. It's nicely decorated. Go early because the wait is long. Usually, however, there are seats indoors but a huge line if you want to sit outside.

Just got back from my second trip to Austin and stopped by Shady Grove for some food and drinks. Another awesome experience. Granted....it was New Year's Day and the restaurant was quite busy. Being in the service industry myself, I usually do not complain about slow, or even, bad service. A salad was served with no utensils and had to be eaten by hand. Drinks were slow to be filled. Dinner was delivered to a five top, again with no silverware. Service was extremely slow in trying to wrap the bill up at the end of the meal. Inaccurate charges on credit cards and cash was also not counted correctly. I went to find the waitress for help and was able to get the manager involved. No thanks to the manager, the $10 charge I should have had on my credit card, cleared through my bank for almost $30.

I have gone to Shady Grove many times in the past and been pleased overall. However, I will not be back.

We waited for 45 mins outside for a table. The manger told us we could eat outside on the patio with our 4 lb dog, but if any customer complained about the dog we would have to leave. The woman at the next table said, she wouldn't complain, but someone might be allergic to dogs. The manager had to ask us to leave and explained the health dept does not allow them to have dogs there.

This restaurant is absolutely wonderful. The food and service are always excellent. I've been in the restaurant business for many years and whoever is in charge of this place knows exactly what their doing. Don't ever change a thing. My only complaint is the horrific unplugged performances. Only a few of the shows are tolerable..... Who books these bands?????

A pet friendly search guided us here. Our dogs DID have a great time in the grass area in front, where we sipped Margaritas as we waited for our table -- with the incredibly dog-loving people of Austin adoring our dogs . . . but to dine we had to put the dogs in the car.

So if you really do Need to have your dog at your side (Hot Day) go another time.

But do go! It was WONDEFUL food, and fun. Our waiter had great personality. Thanks to everyone for recommending the Hippie Chidk and Noodle Salad, I ordered from the menu a Half a HIPPIE CHICK sandwich and Salad, substituting the NOODLE salad for the tossed -- YUMMMY. Next time I'll leave off the chicken -- it takes away from the other indgredients.

For those fortunate enough to have travelled 287 and dined at The Pioneer in Wichita Falls, this is the place for you. The ambience is almost identical to the old roadside joint that was famous on the trip out west. The food is good and the view is great. Austin is home to beautiful people, and you will see them here.

Shady Grove is quintessential Austin and my all 'round favorite Austin restraunt.

The atmosphere in the outside dining area is the closest thing we have left to the old AWH beer garden.

My kids and I have gone in the winter time, sat outside and enjoyed ourselves without end.

I love the food and I'm especially fond of their house jalapeno dressing.

Economical, fun, relaxing, great food - This IS Austin!

It's a great place to go have a drink (overpriced), and the atmosphere is great, but overall it's overrated. They do have my favorite salad, the Noodle Salad, but it isn't one of my favorite places.

Pros: good atmosphere

Cons: parking is awful, drinks are expensive

Texas tradition in hamburger making woudn't be complete without a grilled bun. Shady Grove's burger has just that! The meat is tastey & juicy, well portioned and cooked just right. Topped off with nice slices of red onion, tomatoe and lettuce! Yummy!

There seem to be an abundance of beautiful woman that frequent this spot. The music is always great and the atmosphere is very relaxing. Good place to take your date or to find one.(or two)

I've lunched here several times and it's got a nice ambience, cool laid back crowd and cool waiters.

I've never really been wowed by their food, though, which tends to be fairly greasy and very uncreative.

The construction on Barton Springs MUST end! They're are very stingy with their small (all ice) margaritas!

I no longer live in Austin but this is always my first stop whenever I come back. There is no better restaurant that represents the easy going pace of Austin better than Shady Grove. A warm afternoon in the sun shaded patio with a cold iced tea and catfish makes for a unique experience. The menu is diverse and offers tasty choices ranging from chicken tacos, hippie sandwhiches, cold shine bock beer, catfish, thai salad and of course the shady fries. Keep up the good work and the Austin tradition. Those who did not live in Austin back in the 70', 80's and 90's can't appreciate the atmosphere as much of the newbies.

I never really understood the appeal of this place. The food was pretty bland and generic. The outdoor area is okay, but, there are far better patios in Austin.

Shady Grove is a great place to eat outside. In fact, there's usually a wait to sit outside, but worth it if you have the time. The food is not stand out, but it's tasty all the same. The veggie burger seems to be a major favorite that isn't too dry.
