My Oldest son joined Karate of the Woodlands Inc when he was five, and my youngest followed as soon as he was five as well. They are 10 and 7 now. The value I place on ANY instruction my children receive are positive environment, quality of instruction, discipline in class to ensure quality of education, and that the learning is fun in some way so the children WANT to learn. Mr. Prieto, an 8th degree black-belt, not only provides all the above qualities, but has the rare gift of patience as well. I watched a class my oldest son attended with almost 30 kids under 8 years old, for one hour, do what Mr. Prieto said, when he said it, and at the end of the hour, came out of class sweating, red faced, but SMILING, they had FUN learning. The school teaches karate as defense, as well as discipline in class (which bleeds over into their life out of class) , paying attention and following instruction (which Mr. Prieto teaches in a fun way as a part of instruction and as a game) , self confidence, and working as a group when conducting sparing. The school offers more resources beyond Chun-Kuk-Do, in form of monthly age appropriate worksheets for a character word of the month (Respect, Honesty, Etc) , also an online newsletter for parents from the Corporate office child Psychologist, Dr. Robyn. Conroe and Houston ISD also accept class as a P.E credit. My boys have greatly benefited from instruction as well as the school as a whole, who supports the childrens development with encouragement and positive role models. I would encourage anyone searching for a positive, fun, and character developing program for their children to go to Karate of the Woodlands Inc. and try a class to see all that I have described above. (by Kroger off Research Forrest Drive across from YMCA Shadowbend) . My Name is Keith Winters and Im a proud parent of two boys at Karate of the Woodlands Inc.

The studio I am reviewing is called Karate of The Woodlands. Not ATA Karate for Kids. (ATA used to be in the same location but has now moved over by the mall.) Karate of The Woodlands is located at 4747 Research Forest Dr. Just wanted to make that clear. Don't want to leave a bad review for the wrong studio. As far as Karate of The Woodlands goes, I would give them no stars if I could. They are ripping people off. Overcharging for everything, requiring 120 days notice, lying or not being up front about costs. Actually told us that when my son became a red belt he was required to wear a special uniform that was going to cost us $250. The standard uniform runs $200. Also tried to charge another member $250 for two dvd's to practice their forms. The same videos sell for $55 on the manufacturer's (UFAF) website. Ridiculous business practices. They charge tuition fees (two days a week starts at $200/month), testing fees (that go up in price as your child advances???), equipment fees ($220, the same set runs approx $80 online), annual registration fees ($350) annual tuition increases (we were told it was for cost of living increases), and the weapons package, if you choose to sign up for those classes (yes it costs even more) will run you $299. The same weapons can be purchased online for approx. $150. This place is a scam and it's headed by the scatter brained blonde named Beth. She calls herself the registration director. She's the owner's wife. The only thing good about the studio is the instruction. Unfortunately, it's not worth the fortune you have to pay in hidden fees and costs. There are two other studios in the area who teach the same style karate for less than half the price and the instructors are just as good if not better. Find them online at www.chungkukdo.com Steer clear of this place!!!!!
