Fun atmosphere, friendly staff, great food. I was worried when I read some of the reviews, but if you go to this restaurant you will see that it is a great place.

The new location on 6th street is great. The service, food, and ambiance are the main reasons I keep on going back. I especially enjoy the catfish tacos and veggie enchiladas. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food then this is a good place to visit.

THE FOOD IS NOT EVEN AUTHENTIC TEX-MEX MUCH LESS MEXICAN. ORDERED A TORTA DE PUERCO TURNED OUT TO BE A PORK SLOPPY JOE SERVED WITH PICKLES OF ALL THINGS. THE SERVICE WAS TOO HORRID TO DETAIL AS THEY PAID ABSOLUTLEY NO ATTENTION TO US. EVERYONE STAY AWAY FROM THIS TRAP; A DISGRACE TO AUSTIN AND TEXAS FOR THAT MATTER. THE 1 STAR RATING IS ONLY THERE CAUSE CITYSEARCH WOULD NOT LET ME PUBLISH WITHOUT ONE.

When this restaurant was on South Congress I loved it, I would take people from out of town there and it was always a big hit. Recently I took a friend to the new location and was horribly embarrassed about making the recommendation.

I ordered fajitas and they pretty clearly were microwaved chicken strips straight out of the freezer. Not a single grill mark or sign that they were even in a frying pan. When I told the waiter they were not fajitas he told me the kitchen was just trying to close down... What? If they are open they should be making quality food.

Don't take anyone here unless you like embarassment.

Cons: horrible food, poor quality

I had just gotten married and was heading from the reception to downtown to go dancing. I was still in my wedding dress and neither me nor my husband had been drinking. I started having terrible, painful stomach cramps because of all the rich food I had eaten at the reception and I desperately needed to use the bathroom. We were stuck in downtown traffic and the only place in front of us was El Sol y La Luna. There was a big sign on the door saying "Bathrooms for paying customers only", so I went in with my wallet and offered to buy something if they'd let me use their bathroom. The female manager behind the counter looked me up and down and curled her lip at my dress. She asked me why I needed a bathroom and I told her I was about to be sick and begged her to let me use the bathroom. She started yelling at me and refusing to let me use it, even though I was offering her cash. I was practically in tears as I was about to get sick all over my wedding dress. She finally realized that if she didn't let me go to the bathroom, I was going to get sick right there in front of all the other customers, so she allowed a hostess to show it to me. I just kept whimpering "Thank you, thank you" as I was led back. Meanwhile, the female manager was screaming at my husband and threatening to call the cops, saying it wasn't her problem that I was sick and that we had no business trying to use her bathroom. My husband kept offering her money, but she refused it and kept shouting until she realized he wasn't going to leave without me and stormed off. It was awful being so sick on my wedding night and then being refused a bathroom. That manager is one of the nastiest people I have ever met and I hope she ends up in the same situation some day so she can see what it feels like.

My family and I went to El Sol Y La Luna for a celebration and by the end of the night the only thing that saved the bad food and terrible service was the salsa music. 1st suggestion, stick to beer because their mixed drinks are awful. 2nd suggestion, eat somewhere else before you go to this restaurant because the food is NOT GOOD. 3rd suggestion, DO NOT expect to receive good customer service AT ALL because it is non-existent. I suppose the waitress knew we were a big party and her gratuity would be automatically added so she didn't feel the need to wait on us WHAT SO EVER! When it was time to serve the food, 1 person ended up without their meal and MORE THAN 1 persons' food ended up cold somehow. 4th and final suggestion, only go the this restaurant for the live salsa band.

Went for lunch because I had heard good things and had a gift certificate. First, it was freezing cold in the restaurant. Then you have to pay $3 for chips and salsa. The queso isn't much more than just melted velveeta with pico sprinkled on top. The food did come out pretty quick but my enchiladas were room temperature at best and my companion never received one of their sides.

Bottom line: save your money and go some place better and cheaper like El Arroyo.

I've been a fan of El Sol y La Luna when they were located on South Congress. Now that they've moved downtown to 6th St. I couldn't be happier! Finally there is a good place to get mexican food and margaritas before you go out on a Friday night!

Just down from that over priced dump, Guerros , is this hidden treasure. I eat one to 2 times a week here. It reminds me a Mexico City Cafe. I have never had anything bad here. I love the crispy beef taco plate. The guacamole is always really fresh. One day I was under the weather and got some of their soup, even that was killer!

If you are looking for ambience, this isnt it, If you want great food from a hole in the wall for Tex -Mex. This is it!

I have been to this restaurant a half dozen times, but that's it--I won't be going back. My coworker and I placed a phone to-go order for 4 veggie tacos. First, the server took the order and then left my friend hanging on the phone, apparently forgotten. After a few minutes of yelling into the receiver for help, the server returned and the order was started over. Then, we were told it would be $17+-- for 4 tacos. It turns out the prices don't match the online menu. They added a dollar per taco for about a teaspoon of guac on each. We argued the price until they adjusted it correctly, $5 less (each of our tacos ended up being about $5, expensive for veggie tacos, we think).

When I picked up the food, the server took my money and gave me my change, minus the 7 cents. As I waited for the rest of my change, she looked at me like I should be leaving and asked if I wanted the rest of the change. I said yes. She had to get the manager. The manager came over and made a big scene about me wanting 7 cents back, yelling "siete centavos! siete centavos!", as she begrudgingly gave it to me. I am not one to be petty about 7 cents, but considering the experience from start to end, I wanted to 7 cents on principle alone.

The service here is horrible, and the food is mediocre, and we will never go back.

The food was bland, and not very good at all. The prices are too high for the amount of food you get, and additionally you have to pay for the chips. Our waitress apparently did not understand English well, as she could not answer simple questions about the menu. She also never offered us any chips, and never came back to our table to check on us. For a first visit, this was a bad experience. We will not be returning to this restaurant.

Lesson learned: if a Mexican food restaurant is empty at 7 PM on South Congress, turn around and walk back out the door. There is too much good Mexican food in Austin to settle.

Not the tastiest food in town, but its ok. Blase mexican with all the typical stuff you see on everyone else's menu, except maybe a little less tasty. Friends staff, and a modest little restaurant with a big sign. Not a bad place to grab a quick bite, but wouldnt entertain here.

This is the place for good food, hot and quick. If your looking for an upscale Austin imitation-this isn't it.
The wait staff is a bit "reserved", they could cheer up a bit.
Good menu, no frills, and music that might be of interest.

I have been a couple of times hoping that the bad service I recieved the first time was an exception. Shame on me for going back. No hostess, staff stares at you and almost enjoys seeing you look around for help. They eventually seat you, then 30 minutes later they bring you the chips you have to pay for. If you ask for something, they either say no or they give you a weird look and bring it to you 10 minutes later...and then charge you for it regardless of what it was. It's as if they feel they can get away with anything because of how prime their location is. I won't be going back

I was initially a bit skeptical about eating at such a popular Austin Tex-Mex place especially because that particular location attracts fewer Latino than businesses on the other side of the highway. However, the food, to my surprise had the authentic Mexican seasoning that took me back to my home in Nuevo Leon, esp. the breakfasts and chile rellenos (on Thursdays lunch specials)!! The location is amazing and hip and lends itself for great happy hour and weekend hangouts and the free internet access is ideal for business meetings, which is why I go at least twice a week for lunch. El Sol y La Luna is clearly, and this is coming from a demanding Mexican palate, a taste a Mexico in the heart of Texas.

The food was so bad. The queso was velveeta, which I could easily have gotten past but the chips were so beyond stale my teeth hurt. I ordered fajitas & when I got the plate the fajitas looked like someone had chosen the fattiest strips, set them in the fridge for two months and then over microwaved them. The corn tortillas were cold and my lemonade was so hot the ice melted within minutes. The service wasn't good either but I did notice the waitress never asked how our meal was. She must have known the answer! This may sound over the top but it ALL happened. Fortunately their was Amy's Ice Cream across the street to cheer me up. Go anywhere else for mexican food.

El Sol y La Luna is located in a great spot on South Congress. It has a very local, relaxed vibe to it. It's a perfect place to sit outside, people watch, and eat some tasty food. The veggie quesadillas are delicious- not greasy at all. Be sure to share the nachos because the portions are generous.

The food was expensive for the small portions you have to pay for. At El Arroyo you get around twice as much for less. The chipotle chicken was blah and they handed me a glass and a can of Dr. Pepper which I had to pour myself. This was the first mexican restaurant I have ever been to that you do not get free chips and salsa. The waitress barely checked on us. It was only when my husband stood up to look for her when she would come. Also it took awhile for us to recieve our food. The sad part was we were the ONLY people there other than the staff. This place was a waste of our time and money.

My husband and I are moving to NYC and this is one of the places we will def. miss for breakfast. The chilaquilles rojos are my favorite breakfast followed closely by the chori migas with veggie chorizo. The black beans are always tasty and the price is just so darn cheap. Love the location and Frida Caldo decor. Too bad we haven't found anything that tastes this good for this price in NYC yet.

El Sol Y La Luna restaurant offers vegetarian fare, and the food is good, but not outstanding. I know several people who would disagree with me. Personally, I just don't see the attraction. This restaurant is like the famous actress that you think is just alright looking. The inside is pleasant, and your meal will be too.
