I love both Vietnamese and Thai food and this place doesn't seem to serve either. The weirdest experience because everything was gross and unrecognizable. Not fresh ingredients at all, bland salad rolls, mushy and grainy tofu. Blech. Wonderful waiter and very prompt service, but really awfully prepared food. Visiting Austin and was really disappointed.

I went simple - Pho ga. It was perfect! Admittedly, it might not be 100% traditional, but then again, show me an Austin Vietnamese (or other Asian spot) that is! I am so thrilled to have found this spot and will return often!

Pros: Great food, prompt service

Cons: E 6th is sorta creepy if you're not a tourist or a vagrant.

This spot wedged in between a liquor store and Buffalo Billiards is a secret spot downtown. Some of the best pad that I have eaten, next to Thai Tara. Great appetizers and the green and yellow curry both are amazing. You have to ward off the street vagrants but well worth it.

When I worked downtown I would eat here at least once a week. The pho soup is unbelievably good and aromatic--I felt as if I was gulping down a bowl of good health. The prices can't be beat and the service is excellent.

I'm not sure what the nationality of the people that are giving this restaurant a 4-5 star, but I think this is 1 at best. I am half Vietnamese & half Thai. I went to this restaurant and ordered Pho ('Guoi Tiao' in Thai). The soup was bland and it came with a number of veggies that aren't suppose to be in there (broccoli, carrot, water chestnut, bamboo shoots, celery...). If you like veggies and you don't know what pho is, this bowl might be good for you. My friends ordered the vermicelli noodle bowl (bun in viet, knom jean in thai) and it was horrible just because the fish sauce was tasteless. If you want real thai/viet place, do NOT go here. You will only be disappointed.

I went here to grab dinner before I went to a concert while I was in Austin. The tofu, as well as the rest of the food, was very good. The service was also efficient. For two people, the bill was under $20 so this also makes the resturant ideal.

My boyfriend and I love this place. Pad Thai is one of my favorite dishes and they have the best best one I have tried in Austin. Also, their sticky rice custard pudding is awesome. They give you you a huge serving and its absolutely delicious.

Waiters and waitresses are very sweet and always on top of things. We initially tried this place becausewe had a coupon, but liked it so much we have been back at least 5 times.

I want to know what is going on with their food quality? They serve the worst vietnamese food in Austin. I ordered Pho Dac Biet and it comes out with broccoli, bell peppers, mushrooms and cabbage? Their broth tastes like it's been frozen for years! Their service is the worst and their waiters/waitresses should shower more and dress more professionally as servers. I used to like them when they were Pho Cong Ly. I don't understand why the quality of your food and service has diminished soo much. It's really disappointing and they need a serious look at what they're serving and who is serving it. Their food is simply terrible and they need a new cook, management or something to improve their situation. I can't believe the think that they make and serve authentic Vietnamese and Thai food. Their food is the worst! I hope they improve on it soon.

FIRE THE DAY WAITER NOW!!! This man is the absolute worst excuse for a waiter of all time. Rude, obnxious, snotty jerks should not be waiting on people.

My husband and I read the reviews before eating at Mekong River. We weren't sure what to expect since some reviews were glowing and some reviews were not favorable. However, we found the restaurant to have a charming atmosphere, great wait staff and good food. We went on a Friday during lunch and there was only one other family in the place.

We had a very good experience. I would definitely recommend this place.

I found this restaurant on Citysearch and read the comments on the service. The service was awful, the male waiter was so rude for anything we ask. He acted as if it was an inconvenience to ask for a napkin, extra limes, sauce. The food was not all that great either. I order the Pho Tai and the meat was tough and my friend ordered the pork vermicelli and the meat was tough too. I have yet found a great Vietnamese place but I will not go back to this one.

With most of the best Thai and Vietnamese being up north, we were thrilled to find this jewel in town. Their Tom Kha soup was excellent as was the Pho, spring rolls and noodle bowls. Service was quick friendly and helpful, and our check was taken from the table not at the counter as another reviewer experienced. We will go back again and again! Parking is sometimes a challenge...but this isn't the suburbs ya'll! Check them out!

We ordered the chicken Pad Thai and the charcoal pork vermicelli bowl. Both were delicious! My first visit (although the person that took me goes all the time and says it is always good). I thought it was great and will be adding this to my list of restaurants to frequent :)

I eat here as often as I can since I work only a few blocks away. The best Thai in Austin, in my opinion.

I have moved away from downtown of Austin, but once in a while I took family members or friends come for my Vietnamese favorite at this restaurant. My last visit was excellent, and all my friends liked the food a lot. I had "Saigon Mistress" which is grilled beef marinated with chili, lemongrass, rice kernel. My friends ordered Pad Thai with shrimp and Pho bowl. We are very pleased with the food.

Mekong River is serving best Vietnamese and Thai food in downtown area. The owner is also owns Thai Tara, which is a few block away, this location is only serving Thai. But the recipe is different, same customers like the Thai Food at Mekong River better than Thai Tara. However, I think they are both good but different. I am sorry for a couple from DFW area that seemed to expect McDonald taste at Burger King and disappointed. It is okay for you to express your anger the way you like, and of course it tells who you are. Good luck to you in all. I am a loyal customer and have been satisfied with Vietnamese and most items in Thai menu, I have been treated right by staff at Mekong River, especially many thanks to Lily, Max... See you there!

Great lunch spot - try the charcoal shrimp vermicelli bowl - it's awesome. I do recommend avoiding the chicken, though. Shrimp spring rolls will amaze you - you'll crave them, trust me. Great lunchtime value.

We were visiting Austin from Houston and went into Mekong after walking around 6th street for a while. I had the Pho and my fiance had the "Dancing Chicken". We both LOVED our dinner! It had a nice ambiance and service was great. I would definately recomend this place to others! YUM!

This is one of my favorite lunch spots. The food is great and the prices are good. Even when it gets crowded there are always tables open upstairs (which are also great for large groups). The service can be a little less attentive upstairs though.

This place is awful! They used to operate under a different name, Pho something and I believe received a failing food rating. It's the same exact place as before, with a new name. The food is mediocre, but the service is the worst. I ordered vegetarian spring rolls and received pork! When I complained, the waiter seemed to not care and disappeared. Our order took forever and we were told it was because our spring rolls weren't ready yet? Didn't make any sense! When the food arrived, it was stone cold! I explained to the waiter that this was unacceptable, he didn't care and I walked out. Don't go to this place, it's terrible!

I've been a couple of times for lunch and the food was good. The problem was, it took between 45 minutes and an hour to get the food. At lunch??? The worst part was the way the situation was handled. When I initially asked the "how much longer" question, the person I asked simply walked off. Then, when I brought my dissatisfaction up while paying for my meal, I was completely blown off. The atmosphere is so-so, the service is terrible, and it's all packaged with the worst attitude I've witnessed in the service industry. I'll never, ever, ever go back again.

Downtown value! Great Vietnamese food if you are in the area. Stick with the tofu or pork. Spring rolls are a good addition to any meal also. And caffeine -- yes, you know you love it -- iced coffee for that afternoon lift. (Support your local restaurants instead of Big Green.)

I recently moved back to Austin after living in California for the last few yrs. While living in Austin before, I used to love the Tofu, vermicelli n' lemon grass bowls. A friend and I went to Mekong last week and ordered the charcoal chicken and vermicelli bowl. Damn, what a mistake that was. The chicken was
no better than the chicken you'd get from taco cabana - greasy, fatty and dark. We put the chicken aside and finished the vermicelli. 6 buc ks for a bowl of noodles.

This downtown vietnamese and Thai restaurant is best place to eat for the whole town. The Pho is always right, sometimes it is good but most of the time it is too good. Try Dancing Chcicken or drunken seafood. Blessing shower is tasty, I always wanted it with chicken, beef is also a nother choice. Come and enjoy lunch and dinner.
