Wow, where do I begin? I worked in the restaurant industry for 9 years, I know the deal. My parents made their fortune from restaurants and bars, so I feel like I understand both sides very well and it justifies this review ;-/

So, today we gave this place a second try. It had been about 3 years and we wanted to try it again. My decaf coffee tasted like instant coffee, my oatmeal had so much butter and brown sugar I could hardly eat it, the blue berries were those tiny shriveled gross thingys, not real fresh fruit. Not to be picky, but it gets worse: My water had like 3 floaties, there was a long, black hair wrapped around my French Toast and not to mention when I went to use the bathroom I gagged the ENTIRE time. It was so horrible. Also, the cashier was so disheveled I was just in shock to see him working in a place that served food.
I would like to clarify that the server was very apologetic and took the French Toast off the tab. The service was fine, nothing exceptional, but she was very embarrassed about the hair FT ;)

Anyway, clearly this place has its 'lifers' but if you are sensitive to hair in your food, odors, and dirty dishes, don't go. They need a make over so bad....good lord.

PS - I've never tried the pancakes, evidently they are the reason this place is still in business.

Pros: Longevity in Austin

Cons: Restaurant is dirty, bad employee hygiene, gross bathrooms

Definite long waits most time and they only take cash. Wide variety of breakfast choices. Nothing fancy, just hearty filling food (their pancakes are really good though). Nice laid back place to eat.

Have been eating here since I was two.

Only legit diner in town, magnolia's spun off of omelettry, kerby spun off of mag's, and who the hell cares about star seed's since they stopped the smoking.

best pancakes in town, all the others copy their recipes

huge portions cheap prices

dont eat the chips and salsa

Not a corporate or a chain, the customer is only accidently right here, seriously have heard the manager throw out a awful customer saying, We HONESTLY DON'T NEED YOUR BUSINESS. ha!

Great service if you're a semi-decent person.

If you dont carry enough cash to pay for breakfast, you are probably just a shoddy attempt at a human being.

When you use a credit card, the business that accepts it has to pay 0.75-2.00 for your convenience. If you ran a joint that had a large number of tickets under 10.00 would you take cards? Most places just increase the price for other customers.

If you expect five-star service out of a place that aims for bulk service, you're a moron and you're only
complaining cause you're unfulfilled.

Pros: best pancakes in town, high quality soups, toys for kids

Cons: dont expect a corporate smile, no booze-but BYOB

Long waits on weekend but the food is definitely worth it! No frills dining though so don't wear your Sunday best. Huge portions too. Oh, and don't forget to bring cash - they don't take credit cards.

I have been eating here since college in the early 80's. I visit Austin two or three times a year with my students and have never been disappointed with either the staff or the food. Since the cost is so reasonable, cash only should not present a problem. The gingerbread pancakes are so much better than Kerbey Lane and need only a little syrup because they are so sweet. Okay, so it is a hippie dive, but this conservative loves it and if you want the true Austin experience, this is your spot. Give it a try.

Pros: Large servings/Great Prices

Cons: Cleanliness

Ok, so the place looks like a dump and just does not look like it could be clean but man oh man are the pancakes delicious. I don't know what magic they use but they have nailed the perfect breakfast pancake.
Alt Rock staff is always surprisingly friendly although overworked, they do a brisk business so expect a wait.
Just watch your kids as the wait area flows into the busy parking lot.
Excellent breakfast everytime we go.

Do you look forward to a hot homemade breakfast? Do you appreciate a clean restaurant? Do you LIKE to pay a fee to use your credit card?
Atmosphere is one thing, dirt is another. For instance, take a minute to look up--are there clumps of dirt clinging to the fan blades? And take a peek into the kitchen as you pass by...This was the first 'flag' on my recent visit here. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros, and they were hugely disappointing. The scrambled eggs were laying in a puddle of watery liquid, the black beans tasted as if they were poured directly from a can on to the plate, as were the tasteless canned diced tomatoes with jalapenos (likely source of the puddle) that were heated and then poured over the eggs...no seasoning whatsoever, nothing 'fresh' on the plate. The 'side' of potatoes looked as if the dirt on the skins had not been scrubbed off before cooking and were mostly under baked.
The final frustration was at the check out, they do not take any form of payment other than cash. If you didn't realize this, you now have one option--their 'ATM' gadget which is duct taped to a stand next to the register. There is a $1.50 fee to use the machine (which appears to be owned by the restaurant, so the fee is theirs!) Seems to be a scam here...why not accept debit cards then??
It all adds up to a very bad taste.

Every times I've been to the Omelettry I've had a good experience. You can get plenty to eat for a good price, the service is attentive, but you can still read the morning paper in peace without feeling the waitress is trying to rush you out the door. Highly recommended.

Although there is a bit of a wait, I promise it will be worth the while. While the omelets are very good, but the pancakes are the best i've had in Austin. The prices are reasonable, and not too expensive. The only downside to the Omelettry is the waiting. You'll wait to get a table and You'll wait to get your food. The waitstaff was extremely friendly, but I guess they should be since it takes so long to get the food to the table.

Food is really good, but service is slow and it is ALWAYS freezing inside. Be prepared.

Still, it is a funky hipster/slacker hangout, so you get what you ought to expect, as such.

This establishment either needs to change their name or take omlettes off the menu. Omelettes served "open-face" lying ontop of filling. Oh and the eggs are way over cooked (heat too high, eggs overbeaten). Stick with the daily-fresh-made soups and sandwiches. Expect bored, annoyed waitstaff (you would be too if your hippy patrons weren't tipping well or at all) and long wait on weekends. Hey, this place is an institution---if you don't like it, go to I-HOP, you sell-out.......

Pros: Austin institution and inde-film set for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino

Cons: Tough eggs, unconventional omlettes

Edible food.

"Hey-man-what's-the-hurry" hippie customer service. Plan on getting up and refilling your own drinks.

Actually saw people rolling their own cigarettes and SMOKING in the kitchen. (Grey-haired pony-tailed older man, cracking eggs).

Maybe the hea-lth de- pa-rtment needs a phone call?

Seems like a restaurant in which there is,as one reviewer said, a lack of adult supervision.

Very Bad Service with very good oatmeal( if you can get then to serve it). Honestly, if you side a bowl of oatmeal arround the counter for 30 min because you can't put a bagel in a toaster and then feel like it's ok to blame your customer for pointing out your over site. Oh, and seem to have a list of ready made excuses to fling out rather than offer any sort of mea culpa ??? Free Coffee ??? Honesty ???

So after reading some of your other reviews on this site I can see why when a customer points your mistake that your fist responce is to say they are not in the "Christmas spirit".... I think that is going a bit too far. Is there any adult supervision over there ??? Just disappointing... Obviously, I won't be back.
Going to Magnolia's instead.....

Just got back from new location on Washington St in Brookline, MA. Eggs over-cooked, bacon under-cooked (despite asking for well done), pancake overcooked. Stay away! Oh, did I mention that the A/C was inadequate (even though it was only 75 degrees outside). Mom and Dad better get up here from Austin and protect their investment, before it's too late.

banana and other pancakes are wonderful. the gingerbread that's famous is just ok. our omelette was under cooked and it's really just stuff with an egg on top. the service was great though. i'd recommend the pancakes over the omelettes.

1/2 hour wait to get in on Sunday. Understaffed and poor service. Food quality was lacking -- cheese not melted, the "fresh salsa" they dumped on TOP of the omlette was canned Rotel. The pancakes were the only thing we ordered worth eating. And yes, they only take cash (ATM inside, $1.50 convenience fee). This place was so much better when we tried it the first time a couple years ago.

Don't believe these "fantastic" reviews. They scramble eggs, they cook bacon, and they flip pancakes. This is standard breakfast fair that is the equivalent of at least three or four other places. Price is good, atmosphere is earth mother hippie. But this "greatest food I've ever eaten" is simple provincial cronyism. It is locally owned and better than IHOP, but that's it.

Every time I'm in Austin I have to stop here and have breakfast. The whole attitude says laid back.
I like the sour cream omellette, but they have a veggie with avocado that is fabulous. Their home fries are just right and they always have fresh fruit in season. The pancakes are good too.
So is the coffeee. Don't miss the clever quotes about breakfast and coffee on their menu. Sitting here in Dallas I am missing those eggs just thinking about it.

Omelettry is a nice variation for breakfast or brunch fanatics. The cholestrol free eggs are great for those who are watching what they are eating. The portion size and the cost make the Omelettry a place I will be sure to eat at again. For coffee lovers, they offer various coffee pot sizes. Their special blend was smooth and rich. Great atmosphere and food!

Strangest Omelette I have ever nibbled on. Cold with the egg just laying on top of the ingredients. Just plain odd. They should change their name to "The Oddelette." The waitress was in a horrible mood too, surly and mean.
