Located over a small lake, surrounded by old trees and a beautiful garden where peacocks stroll, this has to be one of the most beautiful restaurants in town. The focus of the chef is beef, and the steaks are respectable in size and quality. Try the prime rib. Good service and a solid wine list.

Vargo's was OUTSTANDING! The service was great, they were great to work with and all of our guests are STILL talking about how amazing the food was...how often do you hear that about "wedding food"?! Their staff was very professional and everything was absolutely perfect

This is a GREAT prom destination. The food is great, the girls absolutely love the scenery, and the service is excellent. I'm from the Woodlands and think the drive was well worth the experience. There was a piano guy playing the night we were there; he was playing quietly, elevator music...I went over and asked if I could play the piano; he let me. I started off with some classic chopsticks to his horror but then proceeded to play some jazz and some classical. They were very nice and it was a lot of fun. (I think they only let me play because pretty much everyone in the room was from one prom or another that night). I loved the place. I've been there several times before, I'm going back tonight actually. Can't wait. I needed to get the address and I found this site.

My husband I ate at Vargo's last night for his birthdays. There service was some of the best we've ever had. Each year I try to take him for the 'best steak in town'. This year Vargo's topped the rest! He had the Twin Filet Oscar plate and I had the stuffed chicken. Both were delicious. Carrot cake and tiramisu to cap off the night were wonderful as well. I'd love to go back again.

I had a delicious steak and really good seafood appetizer while I was there. The entrees and salads give a lot of food for the reasonable prices. The interior is a little dated but it is a very old restaurant and still manages to keep its original charm. I think they brought new chairs this year because the ones in the dining room were nice. The service was great and the gardens were amazing. I will be going back!

Went to Vargo's last night for the first time in years. They had a band there, which was nice, but a little loud if you sat too close. The food was excellent! We had steak and chicken on the Jazz Dinner special. Everything was fresh. As someone else stated, the decor is a little dated, but the grounds are drop dead gorgeous. Looking forward to my next visit.

Large picture windows overlook a small lake surrounded by lush greenery. As you dine, you can watch ducks swim in the waters or see peacocks stroll through the divine landscaping. Everything here is divine and you can't help but relax as waiters attend to your every detail and your meal ends with coffee and a stroll through the gardens. It is one of the few places where you can spend time enjoying the grounds after the meal instead of jumping in your car and heading home. For a light summer starter, order the sliced beefsteak tomato served with Roquefort cheese or house vinaigrette. Each of their salads is delicious and fresh. The 10oz Filet Mignon melts in your mouth and is served with a perfect Bearnaise Sauce. The Pecan Crusted Snapper is like the answer to a prayer - perfectly crispy and flaky at the same time. Make a reservation and dine at Vargo's when the weather is mild and you want a treat for all of your senses. It will be an experience that will stay with you much longer than a run of the mill restaurant

On Aug 6th took my wife for her birthday. Small crowd for Friday night. Two waiters. One good. One clueless. Ordered a french Chablis and after a VERY long time the guy came back and said they did have my wine but they suggested the bottlle in his hand as an alternative. Which was Jacobs Creek Cabarnet Saviagon. Not exactly equivalent. Crab cakes for starter and they were actually good. I had a pecan crusted snapper and my wife a filet and both were actually quite good. So the food still holds up. The wine prices are reasonable and the view is still glorious. I hope the place survives. It needs "freshing up" and I suspect it is now surviving on wedding receptions and events rather than just the casual dinners. I wouldn't write it off - but - i would love to see them spend some money on it - and then advertise it. I remember years ago when this was one of THE places to go in Houston. Sort of sad to have 6 tables of dinners on a Friday night - in a huge place. Even sadder because - it really still good enough to justify a bigger crowd even without the uplift.

We went on Sunday for the brunch. Their appetizer/salad buffet is pretty decent along with big omelet. Their asparagus soup is really creamy and yummy. However, there were 10 of us and 8 of us ordered prime rib and the other 2 ordered the seafood crepe for the brunch entree. Their prime rib is really bad. I think the quality of the meat is very low. Their seafood crepe is not that good either. It is very fishy. Overall, I think $29.95 is too expensive for the low quality prime rib. would not go back at all.

First I wanted to give no Stars, but I had to give at least 1, so that's why I rated this high!

I took my fiancee there to celebrate our engagement and we would have been happier going to Denny's.

I made a reservation for 2:30 on Sunday afternoon -- We arrived at 2:15 and was told it would probably be 2:30 before we were seated.

At 2:45 I asked our status -- the liar woman told me just a few more minutes, they were setting up our table now.

At 2:55 I asked again -- was lied to again -- I know there was a little problem but it's fixed now so it should be just another minute.

At 3:00 I asked my lovely fiancee if she would at least like a drink while we waited -- she asked for a Bloddy Mary -- I went to the bar and asked for the drink -- the woman behind the bar had a discussion in some language with two others behind the bar and they decided they could make the drink. After they fooled around for a good 10 minutes they handed me the "drink" -- it consisted of a splash of vodka and tomato juice -- I had to ask for a straw - and no typical accents to the drink, celery.... anything...

I attempted to pay for the drink using cash -- $8.00 drink, gave them a $10.00 Stood there for another 5 minutes waiting for the $2.00 change they couldn't find.

I brought the drink to my fiancee who didn't complain but did notice the lackluster drink.

I aksed again for the status -- 3:15 now -- was told they were setting our table up, by the windows and that's why we were delayed, and they were chlling the champaigne I had requested, but we were next to be seated.

After they seated 2 other couples in front of us, I was to the point of explosion, but the wonderful woman I will marry calmed me down... so we stayed.

Finally 3:25 we were taken to a table -- that wobbled badly, that was NOT near the windows, and no champagne was ready.

The waiter was excellent -- he leveled the table, apologized for everything, brought the champagne, and took our order.

The food came and we had both ordered NY Strip -- they brought roast beef for me and salmon for my fiancee. Even when they finally got the order right, the food was not worth the $110 price tag!

The grounds are very nice, too bad the restaruant sucks!

Cons: Where do I begin?

Went to brunch for Birthday celebration. Service was just terrible!! So slow, and an obvious language barrier. Very limited selection on buffet. Entrees came before we finished salads, could not get a re-fill on a cup of coffe. Constantly having to ask for more creamer, more this and more that... Then entre came out cold!! and it tasted funny! Just so dissapointed... I heard the place had gone down hill, but just would not belive it till i saw for myself. Used to love this place,, now I will not return.

My girlfriend and I went to Vargo's for a special romantic dinner. We drove up through the white gates into the ample parking lot and immediately the gardens outside took our breath away. We were an hour late but got seated immediately by the large floor to ceiling windows. We had a spectacular view of the gardens. There is a lake, and trees, and foot bridges, peacocks, and a beautiful lighted gazebo.

The service was attentive and not intrusive. Fresh rolls with two different kinds of butter and water were brought immediately and there was no rush for us to order.
I ordered the pecan encrusted red snapper with creamy lemon butter sauce. It tasted wonderful and the portions were so big I couldn't finish! My girlfriend had the rib eye steak which was cooked to perfection. The manager himself went around to each table to make sure everyone was having a good time. That was a really nice touch.

Afterward, we went out into the garden and walked up the path to the large gazebo. It was truly magical walking up there at night. I asked my sweetheart to marry me as we sat there. She said yes as the birds chirped in delight. It was one of the best nights of my life. Thanks Vargo's!

Our experience on this recent Mother's Day was shameful. Who thought it would be a good idea to cover the chairs in a cheap version of white satin and never clean them? Ewwww! It looks like they are prepared for a wedding using "Dollar General" items - no kidding. Carpet is disgustingly filthy & the entire place smells of mildew. If you can get past that the food is fine. Service; however, is a companion to the tacky atmosphere. Who serves a salad and then returns less than 2 minutes - no kidding here - only to plop your entree down in the middle of the table? When told that we would prefer to eat our salad and have our entree later - the waitstaff huffed and then plopped it down on the trays next to the table. I know the original owner sold it a few years back - what a shame! So much for quality and tradition!

A night to remember! (although I don't remember the food). It was near the end of the meal that I gave the waiter my credit card, in advance of the bill, and waited for him to return with a credit slip. He returned with the bill, but no credit slip and no credit card. Where was my credit card? He said I never gave it to him. I begged to differ and sent him back to search for it...no credit card. This went on for 20 minutes at which point the owner came over, unsympathetic to my situation, and accussed me of trying to get out of paying. I was incredulous and accussed them of stealing my card, at which point she (the owner) went to call the police. As we waited, I continued to ask the waiter to check his pockets, etc. He finally returned, rather sheepishly, and handed me my card along with his apology, which I graciously and thankfully accepted. The owner on the other hand had nothing to say, no apology, no offer of a free dessert, nada. The scene was unreal and her behavior was unforgivable. What a shame - Vargo's is an incredible spot, currently being managed by a ignorant slimeball witch who has no business in the restaurant business. I felt sorry for the waitstaff working under her and await a time in the future when Vargo's returns to decent management.

We celebrated the marriage of our son and daughter-in-law at Vargo's with a very intimate reception for 10 people. The setting was magical, with a window view of the beautiful gardens, the service was top notch and the food was an epicurian delight. We started with a seafood appetizer of crabcakes, shrimp, smoked salmon and more along with the perfect wine. Each of us in the party had different entrees, and each one was presented as beautifully as the next. The food was delicious, as well as perfectly heated, and served very promptly. The wait staff was delightful and friendly and seemed to enjoy serving us. The prices for the entrees were very reasonable. I have been to restaurants that charged extra for any side dishes but we received three sides with our meals and they were nothing short of delicious. Although I am a native Houstonian, this was my first visit to Vargo's. It will not be my last. I look forward to a lunch time visit so that I might enjoy the grounds during the day. Thank you, Vargo's, for making our son's wedding reception so lovely and memorable. You've made a loyal customer of us!

Thank you, Vargo's, for making our son's wedding reception so lovely and memorable. You've made a loyal customer of us!

Pros: Parking was plentiful and we were greeted at the door promptly.

I had my wedding at Vargos and was extremely impressed. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The decorations were beautiful and the service was excellent. The food display was great and the taste was delicious. My guests couldn't stop commenting on how nice everything looked and how friendly and courteous the staff were. We gave them the decorations for the gazebo and they took care of everything. If I had it to do again, I would have my event there again! And I would HIGHLY recommend Vargo's to anyone looking for a beautiful, worry-free venue for their wedding.

Pros: Great Wooded & Waterfront View; Friendly, Helpful Staff; Nice Ambience

Cons: Needs more lake cleanup and updated rugs in the gazebo and meeting rooms.

My husband I visited Vargo's tonight and we will NEVER return. I suppose we should have guessed that the food was not going to be any good after we entered the large restauraunt at 7:00 p.m. and there were only two other tables of diners. The restauraunt seemed very dated and unclean, and our table was set with dirty/filmy glasses which was an immediate red flag for me. My husband ordered a dirty martini and it was, in fact , so filthy that it was undrinkable. My lobster bisque appeared to have been nuked way too long, as the bowl was scorching hot and the "soup" was covered in a thick film. It was not even a soup consistency, and was more like enchilada sauce. My husband's shrimp cocktail was served with broken, mushy shrimp that had obviously been frozen for some time. After the first course we decided that we didn't want to risk getting sick and left. The waiter surprised us by completely agreeing that the food was gross and refused to accept any money for the one drink I had consumed. I believe that the location and beautiful grounds of this restaurant are its only redeeming qualities. I'd like to see an investor step in revive this once charming place....

Cons: The food is horrible

Vargos is the most ridiculous restaurant ever. Instead of paying for the meal, in actuality you're paying for the location, which is not worth it. My prom group of 16 started out the day fine arriving and Vargos and taking pictures in the lovely gardens, but once we arrived inside the actual restaurant the night went downhill from there. Our waiter forces us to order from the prom menu, even though for some people in our group $50/person was not in their budget. So we split our decisions where half of the group orders from the regular menu while the other orders from the Prom Menu. Our waiter appears to be nice, until we finally make our orders... A person in the group.. let's say MARCUS orders and like a normal person asks questions and changes his mind and decides to order from the Prom Special. A normal waiter would kindly change the order since he was standing right there, but instead stomps his feet and starts yelling at him saying how rude it is to change an order. We didn't realize that adding a salad and dessert to an order was totally out of his way. So the food arrives at totally different times, and my date and I received our salads after our main course arrived, which was pretty ridiculous. MARCUS ordered the salad that never came. All of us who got our food early had to wait for everyone else's food to arrive, which led to our own food getting cold. The food was not that good with steaks not being cooked properly, etc. At the end of the night we get our check, which the waiter did not separate, even though we asked him earlier to. Again, this same waiter attempted to be sarcastic and condescending and began to yell at us mainly MARCUS, which led to us talking to the main manager. It took us almost an hour to figure out the bill since there were charges for food that never arrived, which made us an hour late to our prom... all due to the waiter's incompetence. I suggest for everyone TO NEVER GO TO VARGOS. BAD SERVICE, BAD FOOD, BAD WAITERS.

We were very disappointed with the service, food selection, food preparation and overall experience that our group of 32 had on prom night. The prom menu online was a complete meal with several choices for entrees for $45.00 which included tax and gratuity. We prepaid the dinner the day before and our reservation was for 8 pm. Our group of 32 arrived by limo at 7:40 and we were not seated until 8:30. The menu posted online stated that a 14 oz rib eye was available and when we received menus a 10 oz rib eye was the only steak available. We had one server for 32 people and the table was set for only 30 people and two people were placed in lounge chairs at the end of the table. The dinner was not served until 9:45 and several people received the wrong food. Instead of receiving stuffed chicken they received linguine chicken and were told that it was the stuffed chicken. Most of the steaks were undercooked and it appeared to be done deliberately to get the meal out of the kitchen. Drinks were never refilled and the server was rude. The result of all this cause our group to be late for the prom. The conclusions that we reached were: Vargo's was unprepared for this dinner and if they couldn't meet an 8 pm reservation then they shouldn't have agree to this time. There should have been more than one server for this large group. This is fraud for publishing one size of steak online and providing smaller steaks for the event. If one type of food run out they need to be honest with the customers and tell them. With prom season approaching I can assure you that we will not recommend Vargo's to any other prom group.

We had a party of 8. I wouldn't think that is too unusually large to handle, but it took over an hour for our food to arrive after we had ordered. When it came, it was cold. I guess it had spent much of the hour waiting to be picked up by our waiter. Every member of our party sent the food back to be warmed. We asked to see the manager to make sure he knew about the service we received, but we were told he was busy. I've never heard of that before. The atmosphere is nice, and the food was decent after it was warmed, but I would recommend avoiding this place.

Pros: atmosphere

Cons: service, managment's response to problems

Took 2 trips to the hostess station and 1/2 hour to get someone to our table to take our order and get water. The restaurant was not crazy-busy and other tables around us were being served diligently. Our drinks and appetizer arrived promptly and the appetizer was delicious. Then the service came to an abrupt halt and a 3rd visit to the hostess station was needed to get our salads served. The manager served the salads himself, was very cordial but did not offer any apologies. We had to flag down a bus boy to order more drinks (which he served). It got to the point that it was comical, did we smell bad? Was it because we had something in our teeth? So after 20 minutes after our salad was served we decided to walk out before our entree was served (which I really doubt).

Pros: Great view, food

Cons: Slower than slow service, apathetic staff

Vargos is a Houston institution and has been here for many years. The food is very good and there is a lot to pick from on the menu. The property is awesome and a great place for an event.

My family went there for Thanksgiving. The meal was $45 each. My son, who loves turkey and dressing, ate about two bites. The food tastes like warmed over TV dinners. Vargo's used to be a good place to go on special occasions. No more. The grounds are still beautiful, but the restaurant is run down and needs to be redone. Would not recommend that anyone go there to eat. They will be severely disappointed.

Cons: Terrible food, extremely overpriced

Perfect. What more can I say about this classic and elegant restaurant? The service was attentive but unobtrusive. I brought a date hoping to impress her with a walk in the luminous garden that oversees beautiful peacocks strutting about and pure white swans gliding in the lake. The atmosphere, the landscape, a hint of romanticism in the air all came together for an incredible evening.

My date had the seabass, while I had their filet mignon. Both were mind blowing. For any special occasion, this is the place to go!

I think if the restaurant had specialty cocktails it could probably be even more attractive to me.

Pros: Attentive Wait Staff! Great Location. Undeniable romance!

Vargo's is primarily a special events location, a lovely outdoor venue for wedding receptions and parties. But they do offer dinner and Sunday brunch for individuals. The main draw is less the menu and more the grounds with roaming…
