it gets crazy busy after six so a reservation would be helpful, very fast service of food so eat your courses quick, very helpful staff, we had two soups, sea weed and wonton, both had awesome flavor, for the beef lover like me try the orange beef, my wife loved the sea scallops and the singapore noodles, most authentic chinese food in town..

there are many things on the menu that most americans have never heard of. if you want something that is not on the very extensive menu, just ask, they will make it for you!

for me, i LOVE the bbq pork and the bbq duck. these items have no equal anywhere in austin. maybe anywhere in the states!

service can be slow otherwise it is a 5 start joint.

Great food...but gets crowded & loud at times. Lets not forget the extremely terrible & poor customer service. Beware of Chinese female waitress, the tall one. I don't know her name and don't care to learn it. She has a tendency to be inattentive to customers, rude and over bills customers...BUT!!! she enjoys giving herself a nice fat gratuity for parties of 5, of which I personally believe she NEVER EVER, EVER deserves.

The sorriest part about the poor customer service is that it continues and the lack of ownership this restaurants owner/management neglects to take responsibility for & correct.

I give them one star only because I don't have the option of giving them ZERO STARS. I've made up my mind to only order take out from on.

We have two favorite dishes that we ALWAYS enjoy.
N8.Pan Fried Flat Noodle with Beef $7.95
and R5.Duck Meat Fried Rice $6.95....yummy!

We are looking for a third to add to this list. So much to choose from, but these to simple dishes keep us coming back month after month and year after year.

We also ALWAYS go next door to CoCos for an after Dinner smoothie desert!!

I've had a love/hate relationship with Din Ho over the years. Their BBQ is so good and the rest of their dishes were decent, but their service was horrible. However, years ago, there wasn't any other place to go for decent Chinese BBQ, so I would take their abuse to get the Q. When the Asian center opened up on N. Lamar, I dumped Din Ho and started going up there for Chinese BBQ. Unfortunately, I wasn't the only one, and it got pretty crowded, and they'd consistently run out of ducks, or chickens, other tasty animals. After a few times of coming home empty handed, and hungry, I thought I'd give Din Ho another chance. To my surprise, the place wasn't like I remembered it. They were friendly, and they had all the deliciousness I could want. So I've been back with them for about a year. Unfortunately, my last few meals there have been super bland. The Q is still good, but all the other dishes I've had are lacking flavor. It's like Din Ho is making food for a retirement community. Looks like I'll be driving back up Lamar for a year or two.

A previous rating makes the following rhetorical remarks...

Q: why do ppl make a big deal about service at an asian establishment?
A: Because this is relative to their dining experience and enjoyment. Food quality, quantity, price, location, cleanliness and service are all to be considered. People can be accustomed to off beat and less than stellar locations because of the stellar food and warmth they get when they are repeat customers. Din Ho used to be such a place, but now it is a busier place with stellar food.

Q: asian restaurants are not known for having excellent service. big deal. is it that much trouble to raise your hand to get a refill? if you dont like the service, then dont tip. ??
A: Across the pond such may be the norm, it doesn't and isn't always the case here in Austin, TX - USA. Some things just aren't desired or tolerated here. We want to know if we can get a meal and be back at work in 1 hour or less. Faced with good knowledge we can respond to make that possible - even if it means 'carry out'. For special people/clients, knowledge of service might reduce uncomfortable wait times; Passing your server on your way to the restroom you can mention what you need indiscreetly. During Din Ho's popular meal times it may take some time to be seated. As you look around, you see friends enjoying their meals and lingering after wards, sometimes in friendly conversation (spying their check on the table). A more intelligent comment for Din Ho's service: If you understand the language your dining experience will be better. If you don't speak it then bring a translator for the full benefit. If we could convey that a less greasy meal is desired, we probably would.
Q: STFU??
A: That rude jackenape attitude negates all the positives that this site was employed for. Please remember that whatever enables one to post rude 'spam' comments like these enables others to post more meaningful informational community comments. The reviewer indicates not leaving a tip - reminds me of a time we went to Din Ho's and everyone threw a tip in but one dude wanted to pay by CC. I saw that the dude pocketed our tips and paid nothing but the bill. Be wary of people using STFU - if you don't know what it implies, Google it. But it has no place here.

If you haven't tried this resturaunt you are missing out on a great meal. Din Ho has a very wide variety of menu options and almost nothing was above 10 dollars. The food came out quick and piping hot without the saltiness of normal Chinese cuisine. Since there was so much food on the table, we had a sort of family style meal and still took home plenty of leftovers. Our party of three could have split one dish by itself. Everything on the table was delightful and full of flavor. Our waiter was inattentive and seemed to avoid us after we asked a few questions about the food; in fact, we never saw him again after he delivered our food. However, the rest of the staff was extremely polite and helpful throughout our meal. Best. Chinese. Food. Ever.

Pros: Great Food, Great Price, Huge Menu, and HUGE Portions

Cons: our waiter was inattentive, staff didn't speak great english

Food came out in less than 10 minutes, just as I expected from a Chinese restaurant. My friends and I go to this place monthly and it never gets old. We wish they did delivery.

Its Thanksgiving and my personal tradition is chinese food. I live off Riverside and of course nothing is open. I found only one chinese restaurant open today-Din Ho. All I can say is... yum! This place is delicious. We got the hot and sour soup, chicken with cashew nuts,Pan fried beef flat noodles, and egg rolls. The egg rolls may be the best I've ever had in my life. The pan fried flat noodles were ridiculously greasy, but oh so good. The chicken with cashew nuts was surprisingly light, not greasy and very very good. The hot and sour soup was rocking as well. Best chinese food I've had in Austin to date. I will definitely be driving the 10 miles up north from riverside for this yummy take out again.

I am Chinese and searched forever to find good, authentic Chinese food when I got to Austin until I discovered them. Yes, the restaurant is dingy, but it's gotten a face lift lately and there have been efforts over the years to clean it up a bit. Yes, the wait can be a while and there is no comfortable waiting area, but the throngs of Chinese families eating happily there contributing to your wait - isn't that a good thing, really? So time your visit... if it's around lunch/dinnertime particularly on Fri or Sat, expect a 20-30 min wait. Yes, the service can be terrible depending on which server you have, but the food is usually brought out quickly (albeit usually not all at once).

The true reason for visiting though is the food... Here are our top 10 dishes in no particular order (bear in mind we have 2 toddlers, so nothing too crazy made this list :))...
- Won ton noodle soup
- Snow pea leaves
- Roast duck
- Char siu/BBQ pork
- Sizzling beef
- Walnut shrimp
- Sesame beef
- Fried pork chop
- Beef or combination fried flat noodle
- Combination crispy noodle

Save room if you can for the side benefit - dessert next door at Coco's :)

We had reservation and we still had to wait 30mins. Then by the time we got our food our bill came with it. Then on top of that we had 2 adults 2 child and a 5 month old and were charged gratuity. When I asked he said your baby counted. Never knew they charge per person and you have to pay for the food as well. Our overall experience as bad. It as dirty and over crowded. Half the time they don't understand what your asking for. So we only had the table for 30 mind and basically they kicked us out.....don't eat there I will never eat there!

I used to like this restaurant, but the customer service has gradually gotten worse over the years, and that's a make-or-break it deal for me. When dining in, the waiter pretty much ignores you until the food is ready to be served or it's time to collect the money.

But taking out has been fine...until recently. My wife ordered snow pea leaves, combination fried rice, and sesame chicken. Because the foam boxes here are not very durable (they melt if you put something hot on it, which has happened in the past to us), we usually request a sheet of aluminum foil underneath the hot food inside the box and we have had no pushback on it. We simply do not like eating foam. Well, the manager of the store, who was the cashier, told my wife that there's nothing wrong with putting hot food on the foam and that my wife doesnt know anything and doesn't go to health class. My wife was obviously upset and left without buying the food. So much for customer service.

I recommend going to great asian restaurants with better service like Sea Dragon or T&S. I know they do a better job of keeping the customer happy.

Take from someone who knows: this is the real deal. The menu has authentic Chinese food and authentic bad Chinese restaurant service. Most people expect good service at restaurants, but trust me, most good chinese restaurants have bad service. The food is most important and they know it. From the duck to the chinese bbq pork, it's definitely worth visiting. asianaustin dot com.

I went to this restaurant for the first time this past Mon with a group of 4. We were seated and served very quickly. I am not an expert on real Chinese food, but I know quality, fresh food when I see it and this is it! My husband had the pork fried rice, which was fresh made with delicious bbq pork. It was not greasy at all. The same goes for the pork lo mien, which was my favorite. The pepper steak was tender and flavorful with plenty of fresh bell peppers and onions. The chicken and broccoli with crispy pan noodles came in a very mellow sauce, but still pretty good overall. The price was very reasonable. We'll definitely be back!

I've been there several times and their dishes are just OK(too salty and too sweet, so American-Chinese). We went there on a Sunday evening just because we live very close and thought it would be a quick dinner. But it was so crowded we had to wait for about 10 minutes for a table. Another 10 minutes after we sat down, no waiter or waitress showed up, I had to wave the menu to a couple of waiters passing by and obviously they saw it. Still, no one came to even just offer some water or drink. Some kids on the next table were jumping up and down, two guys are two other tables use their cameras with flashes. It was so annoying we had to leave the restaurant. I briefly talked to the girl at the front and said I thank her for leading us to the table, she seems to have no problem with customer leaving and didn't even say sorry. Sure your restaurant is popular and crowded today, but we are still customers!

This is the worst experience I had in any restaurant in my whole life. I am Chinese and I love our food, but I would never go there to dine in again! Their BBQ to go is OK though.

I was in the Navy and traveled the Far East and lived there for four years, so I know great food!!!! In my world this is the best place for great bbq and anything else that your taste buds could want. Where else in Austin can you get your chicken with the head still on, or watch your pork being sliced from the pig while you wait. Love stone fish now you know where to get it

The foods are excellent, if they're not out of them. If you come after 7pm, chances are they will be out of at least one of their house special bbq's. If it's not duck that is out, it will pork bbq, or chicken, you name it.

You'll walk out of the restaurant stinky because of their terrible ventilation system.

All wait staff will stick their thumbs in your plates and bowls when they are bringing them to you. Conserve your water because it will never be refilled. And don't try to get their attentions, they intentionally ignore you. They will look at you and walk across you like you're not there! You will leave the restaurant feel like a second class citizen!

The greedy owner. She is the one that chops the bbq in the front (boy short hair, about 50-60 years old). I ordered steamed brown chicken togo one time and told her I did not want the brown sauce, and wanted the white chicken sauce. Both the sauces are in the same size (you know the tiny plastic cups with one inch diameter). She charged me extra because I exchanged one sauce for another. That was ridiculous! Of course I walked out of there after telling her that she was crazy and after the bbq was chopped. Hey, she was trying to rip me off.

If you want bad experience, especially bad service, go there!

Poor ventilation, worse service and some waiters are very independent and non-caring about what you want. Somewhat poor service is understandable on a very busy night, but it's even poor at slow times. The food? I hope you like oil because your will get a good lube job if you eat there. The last 4-5 trips there had the same oily food when we asked for them to use very little. Service was the same every time. We cook better Chinese food at home.

This place is not recommended.

As others have experienced, the food is good but the service needs improvements. If you happen to know the waiter/waitress (if you go there often enough), he/she MIGHT be nice to you. There's one old Chinese-man waiter that's nice but he's only nice to HIS customers. It seems tips are not shared...The food? it's good but expect typical Chinese/Hong Kong style restaurant, take the good with the bad...If you've been to Hong Kong, you know that I mean, the food may be good but the restaurant's cleanliness is questionable. One other thing, expect to go home and take a shower after you eat there, the restaurant?s ventilation is not up-to-par with typical restaurants, you will definitely smell like Chinese food once you leave. I give it 4-stars because the food is good but the overall experience is more like 3-stars

Pros: Good food, opens late, lots of Chinese customers

Cons: Terrible service, ventilation next to non-existent

Near my working place, DinHo was my first choice for a quick lunch in the past several weeks until I ordered the "BBQ Pork on White Rice" to go from DinHo noon May 15. I found a DEAD FLY in the food. Just want to tell you who see this comment: rethink before you lead your friends to this restaurant. If you have to, check your food carefully before you eat it for your goodness. It sounds disgusting but it's a true story. I strongly don't recommend this restaurant.

I never complain. I've never sent food back. I tip 20 percent, sometimes more. But after my terrible experience here, they got nothing extra. I say, Din NO! As in, NO bbq pork, NO roast duck, NO chicken baked in rock salt. I can handle a restaurant being out of a popular dish so I ordered something else -- chicken with broccoli. I waited for about 30 minutes. After seeing people who were seated after me getting their food, I got up and talked to the waiter, who had not returned to my table. There was a mix up, he was sorry, the food would be out soon, he said. When it arrived, there was chicken, but no broccoli. There were, however, mushrooms, which I'm allergic to. I could have said something like, "This isn't what I ordered," but by that time, I just wanted to eat and pushed the mushrooms aside and hoped for the best. When the meal was over, I wanted to leave, but couldn't. They had started to close out their register -- more than two hours before closing time -- and the credit card machine would be tied up for five to 10 minutes (more like 30 minutes, including the good 10 after the machine stopped running). I should have known what I was in for earlier in the night: before the waiter took my order, a woman with a to-go order came to the table. "Can I have some sauce?" "Uh, sure," I said. "I asked up there, and they said to just find a table. That's customer service for you," she said. Later, a server came by and tried to take the sauce away before I'd even gotten my food. The food -- whatever they brought me -- was fine, but it wasn't worth what I endured here. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I don't think I can give this place a second chance. If you're willing to trade the so-called "best Chinese food in Austin" for the worst customer service, go for it.

When I crave Chinese food this restaurant is always my first choice. I myself am Chinese and from Houston, where Chinese restaurants are everywhere - so I know good Chinese food when I taste it. Austin is extremely limited in good authentic Chinese food. In fact, I haven't found any other restaurant other than this one that serves authentic Chinese food that isn't Americanized. The items on the menu are comparable to some of the restaurants in Houston, which is a good sign. The service is not as great as a standard American restaurant because well, it's a CHINESE restaurant. Don't expect it to be like an American restaurant because this is a Chinese restaurant. If you go to any authentic Chinese restaurant in Chinatown in Houston, you will find service to be like this one, and that's the standard. So if you are really picky about service, keep that in mind before going here. I recommend the bbq combination plate.

Pros: AUTHENTIC Chinese food, cheap

Cons: service is subpar, compared to American restaurants

I have been here several times and have been quite impressed with the large amount of great chinese food they serve at very good prices. A full meal there with substantial leftovers for two people is easily under 20 dollars. The food is generally quite tasty and there is a very large selection. The service varies depending on your server. I have had decent service on some occasions and fairly poor service on others. Either way, I recommend eating here.

This is one of the best everyday casual dining Chinese restaurants in town; however, the service part of the restaurant is little bit weak. Especially, the person over the service counter does not have any good training to talk to a customer. I have been going to this restaurant for years now, and this is the second time that I have been insulted by the people over the counter who take "to go" orders and accept the payment. I am very disappointed with un-professional service. They are the upfront image of the restaurant. But overall, the food is great.

This is by far the best Chinese food I've found in Austin. (I'm chinese and used to live in Houston, so I'm a pretty good judge). It's also very reasonably priced. All the 'bad service' comments must come from people who don't frequent Chinese restaurants--the service isn't fantastic, but it's no worse than most Asian places. Definitely give it a try!

This is one of the very few authentic Chinese restaurants in Austin. Although the price and quality of food pales in comparison to anything you can find in Bellaire in Houston, for Austin it is a great deal. Since this restaurant works family style (everyone shares the plates), I strongly recommend coming with a group larger than 3 at least! Also, the total amount of menu item you order should be about one less than the total amount of people in your group. I also strongly recommend not getting typical americanized chinese food like organge/kung pao/general tso chicken, and get things like the sizzling beef, bbq pork, walnut chicken, and peking duck if you have a BIG group. Afterwards you can mozzy on over to Cocos for some milk tea. Overall I highly recommend this to anyone in Austin who wants to see what the closest thing to what real Chinese food is like.

good food but very poor service. One waiter even roll their eyes at you if you ask them for something else like a different kind of take out box. Told the cashier but they did not seem to care. Glad there is now competition at first bbq restaurant.

This is some of the best Chinese food I have ever had. The service may be poor, but the food is delicious. It is best to go with 5-6 people and get different dishes and share family style. Some of my favorites are: the bbq pork, the beef with green onions, sesame chicken, the shrimp ball, the hot and sour soup, and the milk fish. It may be different than chinese food that you are used too, but I think it is some of the best I have ever had.

Tell the waiter everything that you want and need when s/he takes order--they become scarce thanks to the large dining area filled with patrons. Not a romantic place in the traditional sense, but if you and your date enjoy experimenting and trying new places, then this is the place for you! CRAB MEAT WITH FISH MAW soup has a clean and oceanic taste (the "fish maw" is the swim bladder of a fish). BBQ PORK AND ROAST DUCK is a real treat, but know beforehand that duck is quite fatty. BEEF WITH CHINESE BROCCOLI is delicious--the Chinese broccoli does not have a bushy head like the vegetable most are familiar with.

My Dad's family is all Chinese, so I know a thing or two about Chinese home cooking. This place has everything you could want, even a pretty tasty sesame chicken for your Americanized Chinese food fans. For those in search of authentic Chinese, order the gai lan, any of the clay-cooked dishes, and roast duck and pork. The wonton soup is phenomenal, with shrimp-packed dumplings in a positively ethereal chicken broth with ginger. Love the food, ignore the shoddy decor and curt service.

I grew up in South East Asia and Din Ho is the only place in town that totally satisfies my Chinese food craving! Sure the service is not great (tho' there are several courteous wait staff - they're not all bad), the floors eternally sticky, and don't peer under the furniture if you know what's best for you... :) But we eat there at least 2-3 times a month and we've never gotten sick off the food, which is more than I can say for many other restaurants.

The Sizzling Beef is my husband's favorite. Mine has got to be the Won Ton Noodle Soup (you actually get large chunks of shrimp in your wontons). A few other staples are the Roasted Duck, BBQ Pork (Char Siu), Walnut Shrimp, the Stirfried Snow Pea Leaves and the Fried Flat Noodle. But really, we have never had anything bad here, and it's not overtly salted or MSG laden like many other places. And the prices are of course the other good reason to go!

Anyway, think 'typical' Chinese restaurant which is a bit loud, a bit unkempt, a bit lacking in service... keep an open mind and check Din Ho out for their exceptional food!

This is truly the place for Excellant Chinese. Oh sure the service lacks and the place could use a good cleaning, but the Food is Fresh and as real as you get here in Austin. Try the Walnut Shrimp for a spectacular taste treat. The Sesame Chicken was also noteworthy.

Like the title says. I'm from Houston (great Chinatown), and I'm Chinese, so of course I'm a little picky about these things. But it's definitely the best I've had, since I'm not very fond of Americanized-Chinese. The service is rather bad though; I don't know if it's because we're only college kids or what, but they were a little rude to me and my friends.

I have been to Din Ho several times and have never been let down. There's an absolutely HUGE selection of food to choose from, and the best part is that they're open until 1am. If you haven't had authentic Chinese food (probably the majority of Austin) you will be in for a pleasant surprise. The food and ambiance made me feel like I was back in New York's Chinatown

I've been to Din Ho a bunch of times and almost everything I've had has been delicious. Some particular favorites are the beef with chinese broccoli - the beef is always tender, the broccoli is always fresh, and it's served in an understated gingery sauce that's a nice complement - and the chicken crab corn soup. That they're open late is a big plus, as is the fact that take-out orders are always prepared swiftly.

If you want authentic Chienese food, then Din Ho's is the place to go. I love everything on their menu. The servings are huge and the price is just right. I highly recommend their sizzling black bean chicken. They also have great roasted duck. My only complaint about this place is the long wait. So go early!

Service sucks...Although I go there alot. The food is awesome, but the service absolutely sucks. My drinks never get filled unless I ask them too. I always wave someone over to take my order. No service good food. Now I normally order pickup. Saves me 5 bucks on tip everytime.
