A great place to buy cichlids!

by K B.

4 stars!
I purchase all my cichlids from Amazonia. I love their variety...but don't go there and rely totally upon the staff.

- twice has the staff contradicted one another in regard to cichlid compatibility...which left me confused. I ended up leaving empty handed and did my own research at home...BUT I went back well informed and knew what I wanted.
- while bagging my fish, the worker dropped it...but put it in the bag anyway. The fish ended up dying at home. Whoops!
- A tank was labeled for a certain fish, and the fish inside was obviously not that fish (I knew)...but the worker who was helping me did not. *shrug*

Other than a few mishaps with the staff, the store really is great!!

...just as long as you're not expecting shiny glass and super clean aquariums. Usually the floors are a little wet and the tanks are sometimes mislabeled, so make sure you know what you're buying. I don't mind a little chaos and disorder if it means I'm getting a good fish. In fact, the laid back atmosphere of the shop makes me more comfortable.

The prices are pretty reasonable...and I was told they'll buy your fry!

They've got a really great selection of community fish and about 2 out of 5 trips there they'll have an awesome selection of aquatic plants. They've got great rock + driftwood selection.

In short...I drive 20 minutes and pass at least 4 other fish shops just to go to this one.

Overpriced and poor return policy, but very knowledgeable

by Foxfire 1.

Filter and tank product prices are 60-70% higher than other local aquarium stores or internet. Return policy is not good: in-store credit only. Staff is very knowledgeable but not overly helpful at guiding beginners getting started (you have to know what to ask). They do have a large variety of fish, though the tanks are not as clean as other shops I have visited in the area. They don't seem to turn much physical merchandise as other stores (items are often dusty).

by Debrah C. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 8,353

If fish is your game, this is your place. They have a good selection and a very knowledgeble staff that can answer all your questions. They have everything you need for your tanks from big to little. They have a very large selection of equipment and fish and accessories. Parking is never a problem and they are easy to get to right off the highway.

This place is so amazing. I love to take my kids there. We can spend hours here just looking at and learning about all the amazing fish they have. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, and always happy to answer questions. For aquarium enthusiasts, this is HEAVEN! Their prices are very reasonable as well. A BIG plus!

Great for all your needs

by Katie H. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,671

Amazonia has been in Austin for as long as I can remember, and there's a reason--it's a great place to go for fish and the products you need for them. They have a huge variety of fish, some which I have never been able to find anywhere else. The fish are beautiful and the store is very well kept up. The staff is very knowledgable and friendly, and the prices are reasonable. There just isn't a better place in Austin to go for this kind of thing.
