Message from Prince's Hamburgers

Merchant_icon

"Do you remember Old Main? The Shamrock Hilton? When Houston ended at Holcombe? The founders of Prince?s do. In 1934, back when you could buy a lot for a little, Prince?s opened their first family style drive-in. It wasn?t long before the food, the fountain, the carhops, and those delicious hamburgers made us ?Nationally Famous?. We even made the cover of Life Magazine! That same quality and dedication that went into that original Prince?s Drive-In is still alive today. The freshest ingredients, chicken, seafood and Angus Beef in every burger along with a commitment to making our customers happy (and well fed) is what continues to make Prince?s a Houston Institution. We are proud of our heritage and that we are still going strong in Houston. Come by and let us share our food with you and we promise you and your family will continue to come back for more!! "

Editorial by Citysearch

In Short
Prince's wasn't Houston's first drive-in restaurant--that honor belongs to the venerable Pig Stand--but it withstood the deluge of franchise drive-throughs. A fun tribute to the early rock-and-roll era, it's decorated with wonderful jukeboxes and other '50s nostalgia. Menu includes burgers, hot dogs, french fries and all the expected favorites. Delicious, fresh shakes are made with hand-dipped ice cream and served in metal blender cups.

Prince's Hamburgers is great

by cely r.

Prince's has the absolute best milkshakes. I used to go at least once a week to the location on I-10. The menu selections are great. Try the chicken sandwich and onion rings

Prince's Hamburgers is conveniently located across from Lakewood church. Many members of Lakewood eat here weekly. They have a variety of items on the menu.

Old School meal that fills you up

by dgc1987

I stopped in here when visiting Houston recently. I was actually looking for the Burger Shack, but I found this place on the way. They have excellent malts and really good food overall. I can't say that the burger was the best ever, but it was thick and juicy, just the way it should be.

Pros: Malts

Cons: None

Decent food for the price

by houston_aggie

I went here for a quick weekday lunch. I ordered the Smitty with the fries and onion rings. The burger was pretty dry and the fries and rings were a bit soggy. But I will say that the food came out very quickly and is pretty decent for the price. I'd come here again if I was in the mood for some good ol' greasy food.

Pros: fast service

Cons: not the best burger I've had

Original Fish Sandwich

by digita6875clcn

I used to eat at Prince's when I was a child. I always ate an Open Trout Sandwich. This was Texas toast, trout, tarter sauce and fries. So when it said original fish sandwich I had to try it. It was very good, but it was on a bun, not an open face sandwich and no Texas toast. A small amount of tarter sauce on sandwich. I do not think the fish was trout. Again the food was very good, the fish was excellent, the price was right, but the original sandwich it was not.
I did not even realize they still had Prince's in Houston. It was a fun evening for my son and I . I guess I could not have expected the same sandwich as in the 50's, but I did love it so. I wish it could be the same.

All talk No Show..

by culinary_freak21

I was reading up about this place, and found that it was also ranked number 3 for hotdogs. It also had raved reviews with how delicious the burgers were. Me and my girlfriend ordered two original burgers with there famous sauce. They messed up the order terribly, neither had the sauce, and I had ordered a double, and they screwed that up too. Not a big deal until i bit into my burger and realized it tasted like completely cheap meat. The fries that came with it were a limited amount, and soft. I also ordered a hot dog, and I think Ive eaten better hot dogs at movie theatres. Im surprised it has so many praised reviews.

Best Value Hands Down

by burgerlover777

I have eaten at several burger joints here around Houston and honestly have not met a match to Prince's.
They are the only TRUE old fashioned burger still around. I took my grandmother to the Katy Frwy location and she told me the Original and the hand-breaded onion rings still taste exactly like they did 50 years ago.
Thank you Prince's for continuing to serve the best burgers in Houston. If you are straving you won't be after a visit to Prince's.

Pros: Best Value in town

Cons: not enough locations

The "Origional "with cheese -Delicious!!!

by katyantill

Yum!! Yum!! The '"Origional" with cheese is the way to go....so different than a regular burger....My parents had the same exact burger 50 years ago at the old location on Main street. The onion rings are the best! Service on Southwest Freeway location is VERY fast and is very kid friendly. Love it! Refreshing to have an origional icon still here in Houston!

tough and tasteless

by burgersandfries

prince's claims they use fresh ground Certified Angus Beef. that's a lie, straight up. i ate at their katy freeway location yesterday in the mid afternoon. i had the third pound Old Timer w/cheese. the meat patty was small for a "third pound", was your typical processed, frozen meat patty (how they find the nerve to pass this off as fresh ground is beyond me), and was tough. it was flavorless and generally unappetizing. and if this wasn't bad enough; they have what appears to be repeatedly washed (or maybe not washed at all) heinz ketchup bottles at the booths that are filled with something that is CERTAINLY NOT heinz ketchup. sixteen plus dollars for two burger, fry, and drink meals...go to burger king.

can't get enough

by arubishka

I can eat here everyday and not get tired of the fabulous hamburgers. They are consistantly fresh, well seasoned, well cooked and perfect. The mixture of all the ingredients is in perfect proportion to make an awesome burger. the fries are crispy and tasty and the onion rings are to rave about. Great job Stiles for managing the place so well.

Pros: the best burger in town

Cons: sometimes too many kids

great late nite quick bite to eat

by missorenishii

great place to go if you're really hungry and want a late nite quick bite to eat. the ambience has a nostalgic 50s fast-food joint decor - somewhat laid-back and "come as you are" feel. the food is decent, nothing really spectacular, but like i said, it'll satisfy your palette when you're really hungry.*

Pros: decent food when you're really hungry

Cons: ambience

the food was super good here, but now worth the wait. they didnt seem to know what was going on in the kitchen. people after us had their food before us, they messed up the side of fries and gave us onion rings. the floor was dirty and no attempt was made to clean up.

Pros: good burger

Cons: not clean

The burgers are juicy and flavorful. The beef patty is full of flavor from the grill. The restaurant has a relaxing and fun atmosphere. Also the milk shakes are very good. The banana shake tastes fresh with bits of banana blended in. The rootbeer is cold and so good!

For Burgers - This is the Only Place - Try the "Original"

by petemanale

I am 75 years old and have been enjoying Prince's for a long, long time - about 50 years or more.
I remember eating at the drive-in out at South Main and OST and the car hops all were nice looking, friendly and very courtious. A long time ago, the best place to get fried shrimp was at Prince's. Of course, the Hamburgers were always a favorite and I still enjoy them. I had one (along with ten members of my family including four grand children) on June 30th at the Westpark location and it was just like the 1950s - excellent as always, but be sure to order the "Original".

Pros: Excellent food at very reasonable prices

Cons: Don't change a thing

OVER RATED

by jezebelmk

I have had tons of burgers and quite frankly this one does not make the top 50. I have tried 3 different burgers here on different visists only to find each bland and uninspiring. For the moeny most restaurants can compete and offer more flavorful meat and vegetables choices. please spend your money elsewhere!

TRULY WONDERFUL!

by gruschkus

Princes is not only famous for their food but also their generosity. Princes was kind enough to donated 40 of their famous milkshakes to the MDA/ALS Clinic. I can't express how much this meant to all the patients seen at clinic that day. So if you are reading this please go to Prince's because they really care about people and their community. Besides the food and shakes are GREAT!

I think it's just the best. I went to this restaurant according to all the good reviews I read here, and all I have to say is that is the best when it comes to burgers.

The price is very affordable, good service, orders are fast, and food is so good. I definately recommend the shakes...mmm they are good. In a week I have been there twice. Great stuff!

Pros: Excellent Food, Cheap Price , Excellent Service

Cons: NO CONS!!!, Very clean area

As good as I remember

by contidog

As a kid my mother used to take us to Princess drive in to eat these burgers. This was and still the standard to meet for burgers in my family. All the others are copycat. There is a place in El Paso called Roscoe's but it is still a step or two below this restaurant. The popy seed buns are the etched in my memory. This is not just nostalgia, the burgers here are the best and can hold a candle to any in the country. Enjoy.

A classic

by deballn

Princes on the 59 Fwy. is truly an icon. I used to own a burger joint and made my burgers exactly the way Princes make theirs. I bought my restaurant from the now manager of Princes. No wonder is it so great. Styles is excellent at what he does; because of him the place is a success. The burgers are the real old fashioned mccoy. The best, the juiciest and the tastiest. the onion rings are a sure winner and the atmosphere is A+++.
I refuse to eat a burger anywhere else.

Pros: fantastic food, great atmosphere, good management

Flawless

by bjbste

Price's Hamburgers is probably the best burgers I have ever tasted in my life! The Original is unbeattable and the hand-made onion rings are the best in the country, without a doubt. The service is good and the atmosphere is family friendly. There is a deep Houston history & tradition. Fudruckers and Beck's Prime don't stand a chance. Their homemade rootbeer is even better then it sounds. Thanks Prince's for a meal worth a 1000 words, the only restaurant worth going to.

Pros: Worth the $, Best Hamburger, Best Fries/Onion Ring

by jb373

Just get the Original, some onion rings, a chocolate shake, and take the rest of the day off - b/c after that lunch you'll be feeling so good you won't want to go back to work.

I went with a group last week and everyone really enjoyed it. It was our first time - we used to go to this other burger place - but we'll be coming back often now.

This is a real "Houston" place - and we got that feeling from the moment we walked in the door.

Pros: great food, served fresh and hot, terrific value

Cons: crowded for lunch

Princes of the Universe

by dedknight

Princes is far and away the best hamburger place in Houston, maybe the world. I mean the food is just effin good. If that were all, I'd still be sold, but the ambiance is also a nice touch. Playing "what year is that 'vette over there" with my dad while waiting for the food (and you will wait for the food, this is a restraunt, not some fast food place, for chrissakes) provide me with fond experiences that I feel comfortable sharing with millions of strangers. Princes is a Houston tradition, mainly because it has its own unique style and history, which separate it from all the other burger joints in the universe. It truly is good eatin'.

Pros: Great Food, Really, Great Food, No lie, Great Food

Cons: Service takes awhile

This was finally a burger the way I wanted it. They cooked everything on the burger so it was all hot and fresh when I got it and I didn't have to do it all myself - and no one else does that anymore. Plus the onion rings were awesome, and the last time I was there I got the chicken tenders and they were outstanding too!

Pros: GOOD food

Cons: Crowded at lunch

By far the best burgers in Houston, perhaps the best in Texas. I can honestly say I have tried many many burgers in Houston (and all of Texas), for Cheeseburgers are my favorite food. The Prince's Original makes me happy every time, but I also love the Old Timer, the Smitty, and the Alamo Burger. I always take my out of town guests to Prince's and they agree that it is a fun and great place to grab a meal. Thanks.

Pros: Great Food, Inexpensive, Big Portions
