My wife and I went to Matt's El Rancho for a date night. Our waitress was fantastic. We really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. The menu was extensive, prices were reasonable, and food was delicious. We look forward to going back soon!

Always a bustling restaurant, the great thing I think is the lunch special prices. Despite the rising prices of restaurants nowadays, this restaurant keeps the lunch specials at a low flat $5-6. I must say i was a little disappointed in the salsa though.

For those of us born in Austin, Matt's is more than a restaurant. It is where we grew up. Our families took us once a week and we take our families once a week and so on. The place has been in business for over 58 years so they must be doing something right. I know Austin has changed a lot in the last 15 years or so. Now trailer taco stands are all the rage and if a place has been in business 10 years, it is considered a landmark. I am not knocking those places because I like them too. But I was born in this town. I know the real deal. And I am in no way condemning people who move here. Heck I love it. If you love Austin that is great. The more the merrier. For those that don't know, Matt Martinez was an Austin legend. A legendary boxer and a legendary man. The Martinez's started with nothing and built everything from scratch. Matt Sr. and his wife Janie worked 18 hours a day in a little place with just a few tables while Janie cooked and Matt hosted, waited, and bused tables. I've been there so many times I know the story. I am attached to the place for different reasons. I love the food. Despite what some think, the food is all homemade, from the chips, flour and corn tortillas, salsa, guacamole, etc. And no, the cheese is not processed. It is old fashioned queso. The decor is classy. The staff is friendly and the family is more than accomodating. If I have ever had any problem it was resolved immediately and for going there literally thousands of times I can count on one hand the times that I've had a problem. Great place. Great tradtion. They are busier than ever and it is crowded but sometimes there is a reason for a crowd. It's good. It's always good!

In 1968 I visited Matt's on a High School trip with about 13 other people. It was the first time i had ever eaten Mexican Food I loved it . Couldn't get enough of it. I have eaten Mexican all over Texas... I have eaten mexIican food in Mexico. Matt's is like coming home and eating Mexican food how it should be. I now live outside of Austin on Lake LBJ. I have driven back and forth to Austin for both business and nonsense for almost 30 years and i refuse to go to Austin on Tuesdays because Matt's is closed. I have even been known to sneak off by my self and drive the 70+ miles just to eat the Chicken Rellenos with the Green Sauce on the Luncheon Menu. I recommend it to everyone...

The chips and Bob queso were awesome! The kids Tacos lacked some flavor but most kids would find them right on the money. I prefer the migas which were bursting with flavor with the right balance of crunch and ooze. Mom would not switch plates with me so I had to be happy with three bites. The kid bean cheese nachos were good..but then not good enough to get more than a 1 shrimp trade of my dad's Shrimp Ala Matt Martniez which was nicely flavored and grilled. Sis had a plate of beautiful melted yummy cheese enchiladas and rice and beans which she devoured( high praise from the non-eater) The service was amazing very friendly and attentive without being cloying(my new word this week :) )...the pralines to go were a fun little bonus.

The frog legs is great my Boyfriend never hand one and definitely loved it! The quesadilla is kinda oily but the guacamole salad is awesome.
I hope they would consider toning down the hotness of the salsa dip unless... they will not consider children as their valued customer when there is family who will decide to eat there.Myabe they can make a milder version of it for those kids and have gi problem...

Started off great with good mexican martinis and margaritas. They carry a new tequilla called Chinaco Silver - very good!

Ordered the brisket tacos. The meat was semi-dry, like it had been sitting under a heat lamp all day. My gf ordered the vegetarian enchiladas, and they were above average. Very loud place with a relatively younger crowd. Cool atmosphere, but average overall.

Pros: Know not to go there again.

Cons: Food, wait, up all night going to the bathroom.

We waited over an hour for a table for four on a Thursday night. They didn't appear to be that busy. The waiter was clearly not interested in us as we waited 20 minutes for him to take and receive our drink order (which was tea and water). We ordered and the food was cold and tasteless. I will never recommend Matt's to anyone. Go someplace else!

We went as a group of 6 for my friends birthday and it took literally 20 min to get our drinks and the place was not even busy. The waiter was friendly but talked to us like we were 12 and i still couldnt figure out why. After waiting over 45 min for our food it wasnt even very tasty. This place was highly recommended to us, but i surely wont be recommending this place to ANYONE. Pick Casa Garcia, Little Mexico or La Feria over this place ANY DAY

Hoo Hum, taste - as if our meal came straight from the can! Salsa was HOT & SPICY - you could remove dried paint from your driveway with that stuff. Atmosphere was crowded & Noisy. Not sure why because most of the FOOD was tasteless. Their reputation needs to be redeemed. This place lost its touch when Matt passed away.

OK, this is one of the few places I have ben to several times since moving to Austin. My first time here I ordered the prickley pear margarita on a friend's reccomendation and was shocked when it came out fuschia! I was only slightly less shocked when it was delicious! My friend and I started out with the shrimp avocado ceviche which was uber tasty. I had some soup and an a la cart taco, both of which left me very happy. My most recent visit was even more wonderful, I practically had to be rolled out of there! I got the chicken fajitas with the grilled veggies mixed in and I am in love! It will take a miracle to get me to order anything else, it was SO good. The service there has always been good. My waiter the last time was very helpful and accomodating. Over all I give this place an A+. It was my choice for my birthday dinner and to take out my special friend who helped me move. PS-sit outside, its lovely!

Since my first terrible dinner at Matt's El Rancho over six years ago, I have never been back for any more food...it was that bad. The food ranged from below mediocre to awful, but the truly disappointing part was the way we were treated. The waitstaff was busy closing down portions of the restaurant and acted like we were putting them out because we wanted to order, like we had walked in at the last minute, even though we arrived at 8:00 pm, TWO HOURS before their posted closing time. As part of their closing procedures, they had placed tables and chairs in front of the doors to the restroom, and were upset when I walked around the tables and squeezed my way through the bathroom door--I guess they had already cleaned the restroom, and didn't want anybody to use it. Altogether a miserable, teeth-grinding experience.

On the other hand, I have gone back a couple of times for happy hour margaritas. Their patio is relaxing, the margaritas are passable to good, and you can avoid having any of that terrible, greasy food. And don't get me wrong--I like greasy--I always order queso flameado with chorizo if it's on the menu (which is basically melted cheese and Mexican sausage--doesn't get much greasier!)--but the food I got at Matt's was swimming in pools of tasteless grease. Go for the happy hour, avoid the food.

Matt's El Rancho is a great place to choose when going out with friends. The atmosphere is a little loud but always fun, and the place is always packed - which says something! The food is good, true tex-mex, the Armstrong dip is a favorite of many, and the margaritas are good and strong. In fact, their strawberry margaritas are the best I've ever had - delicious! Just be sure to have a designated driver if you plan on having more than one! Sure you'll have to wait pretty much anytime in the evenings or on weekends, but I think it's worth the wait. :)

I grew up with Matt and family... As a native Austinite, this is something that is a right of passage. The standard is the standard. God Bless the Martinez family for carrying on a great tradition. Get there early(or late) on the weekends. This place is a MUST stop while in Austin.

We were very disappointed the past few times we ate here and are finally giving up. The food tasted like it came off of a Cisco truck yet we know it is their menu. Strange.

This was one of our favorite restuarants for years but not anymore. We know other old regular customers that refuse to eat there anymore, too. Matt would be so disappointed, God rest his Soul. Oh well, we have good memories. Adios Joe and Mo. See ya around town!

In all fairness, the guacamole was good, but that was all that was good. The rest was tasteless and hidden beneath thick layers of sauces and cheese which all tasted the same. Definitely not the place it used to be. If you like high fat Tex Mex, this place is for you. This is not the fine Tex Mex the restaurant it still advertises itself to be. I could see the grease floating on top of all the cheese and chili. The butter they brought me for the tortillas was warm and came from another table. My husband ordered the the beef enchiladas and paid the price the rest of the night. I ordered the green enchiladas and two days later I'm still paying the price. There are much better Mexican restaurants in town that don't cover their greasy food with heaps of cheese, chile and fake sour cream. Try one of the many other Tex Mex restaurants in town. Your body will thank you.

This used to be a favorite place when I fist started spending a lot of time in Austin. But, the last few times were far from impressive, the last visit being - well, my last visit. We were there for lunch, and I got the luncheon relleno. It came with Ranchero sauce, but I asked for verde sauce instead. Well, I got the verde sauce, but they also included the raisins and pecans that normally came with the Ranchero. I think any decent restaurant would know better than that, or at least have the snap to have the waiter clarify the order. I might have gone back, but too many other favorites have pushed Matts out of the competition. Too bad, too, because I really liked going there.

Loud and too busy. We had to shout to hear others at our table. The place has gotten too big and the food has become bland and gone downhill over the years since Matt Sr. ran the place. It's a shame. My wife said the bathroom is usually pretty trashed out from all the bar patrons. We had to wait an hour and a half for a table recently while customers just sat and drank at tables. Seems more people go there to drink rather than to dine. There are better places these days to get Tex Mex, relaxed atmosphere and friendly customer service.

I have been going to Matt's for many years. To Toroneg, the review that based his or her experience on the food 6 years ago, I highly suggest you go back. Sounds like you might have had a bad experience then, but Matt's has been under new management for 5 years and the food is outstanding tex mex. I recommend that you try it out again instead of basing your opinion on something that happened over half a decade ago. I go there many nights and NEVER experience the things that you describe with the waitstaff, service, food, etc. Long live Matt's, an Austin icon!

I go there many nights and NEVER experience the things that you describe with the waitstaff, service, food, etc. Long live Matt's, an Austin icon!

Pros: Great food, drinks, and service

Cons: Can be busy, loud, and might have to wait on weekends

.

Unless you time travelled straight from the 1950's, you've got to know this isn't real Mexican food. It's a pity, because the decor is authentic and beautiful.

Pros: pretty place

Cons: fake cheese, bland, greasy

The beef flautas with green sauce are the best!!!!!! To whoever posted regarding American cheese, that is traditionally used in TexMex!!!!!! :) I love their chips. The main drawback is it's loud, and the silverware is the cheapest stuff around. It almost hurts when cutting your food!

Pros: Outdoor patio, Value for money, Great food

ok to start I read many of the other reviews and thought this was a good idea. I was wrong, I had brisket tacos, and the BOB dip. Both were bland, cold, and NOT recommended. Also the house margaritas are terrible. My girlfriend had nachos and said they were good.

For a mexican food restaurant in texas I wonder how they stay in business, it must be by name alone. I have had better food from taco bell. You may have some good luck here but I was very dissapointed. So so food with so so drinks. The only postive is that its not very expensive for what it is.

I was denied a drink (margarita) since my passport didn't count as a valid form of identification when I first came to Austin to visit, I've been in Austin for about 4 years now and I've told all my friends not to go there unless they have a "texas driver's license" they wouldn't let you drink without one!!! This place sucks!!!

matts is a tradidition and all the regulars will agree. like any restaurant, there is always room for improvement. the chicken in the flautas is chicken, not turkey. so, what ever they were trying---who knows. the food is always consistent for tex mex-awesome fajitas, tacos al carbon, bob armstrong, and anything with shrimp. the best part of matts is you feel at home--you know what you are getting. yes, it does get crowded but if you are in a hurry-there is asonic across the street, right. with plenty of parking and a lively atmosphere, it is a must go.the satisfied greatly outweigh the dissatisfied.

I litterally eat here one time a week! Their margs are the ABSOLUTE BEST I have ever had- 2 and I am done! Strong and delicious! Great food- I've tried almost everything on the menu- Bob Armstrong Dip is a must, great salsa, must try the enchiladas and the mexican pizza. My friends say the fish is really good. Fajitas are most def the best in town. Abolutely heavenly

Mine and my wife's favorite tex-mex place anywhere! Best fajitas I have ever had! Also love their chips (extra crispy) although my wife thinks they are too hard. Bob Armstrong dip (queso, beef and guacamole)is phenominal.

Margaritas are excellent and very potent!

You won't be dissapointed!

The overall review says that Matt's isn't good for kids -- I disagree. As long as you go in before the lunch or dinner crowds get too dense, the servers are very accomodating of families' needs. Matt's is like TexMex comfort food to me - not sophisticated, but pretty consistent. My kids like it a lot, and I don't mind that it is ususally the place they ask to go when it is their choice of where to eat out.

Great food and drinks. The fajitas are out of this world. Under new management over the past 2 years as well and you can tell the difference. One of our favorite places to eat and drink!

The back patio is absolutely the best place in Austin to enjoy a pitcher of margaritas... Inside can get a bit crowded with lots of kids crying, but if you have some aspirin or a little patience, you will still have a good time. The servers are prompt, don't make mistakes with your orders, and will help you out with some napkins or extra guacamole even in the busiest hours.

Besides Papasito's these are my favorite fajitas in town, well seasoned, definitely carefully prepared!! I love the food in the restaurant, the outdoor atmosphere is also great. The only thing that needs improvement is the service. Everytime I go I expect to wait at least 10 minutes to just get my drink order in and have to literally shake someone to get a refill!! Oh well, the food makes it worth it.
