Got turned around near mopac (at rush hour -- heaven forbid). Ended up in stand-still traffic for so long that we decided to exit the highway. Saw The Magnolia Cafe and wanted to spend some time there while waiting for traffic to die down. I got the Greek Salad and it was excellent! I think my boyfriend had a hamburger but can't remember which specifically, only that he really enjoyed it. Portions were much bigger than I was expecting.

Waitstaff wasn't very friendly (and was somewhat neglectful) but the food was so good that I'll definitely be back.

We went to Magnolia's on Sunday around 12:30ish. My boyfriend and I were seated at the counter, and we ordered pancakes and oj to go at 1:00 pm. We received a bill and paid at 1:10. We waited 20 more minutes and still no pancakes. Our waitress had disappeared after we paid and tipped her (I don't think we made her mad since we usually tip 30% or more). At 1:30 we asked another waiter if they forgot our order. We actually had to point out the order we saw in the kitchen that had been waiting for quite some time. We eventually received our food to go 35 minutes after ordering and left without seeing our waitress again.

I've been here a dozen times. The food is good as usual. This is the place I usually take out of town friends, which the always agree that it's the best breakfast place in Texas. On occasions, the waitress at the south location seems a bit worn out, lazy, and perhaps slow. She may just be new, but that doesn't stop me from eating there.

First time to the So. Congress location. Read one review about poor service. Boy did they get that right. I always feel good about tipping fairly. Not with this service. A fair tip would have been for our waitress to tip me!!! Probably some of the worst service I have gotten in many years. Will try the other location next time.

So I'm 35ish and went to the Magnolia cafe on Saturday night around 11:30. We had been drinking a little down the street. I got one gingerbread pancake and we shared the Mag mud. Both were awesome. The entire time we were there we listened to the Beastie boys. I can't think of a place anywhere else where you can get pancakes at that time while also listening to the best music ever. Made me want to pack up my entire life and move to Austin. Good job.

Solid food, good selection, kicks the **** out of Kirbey Lane/Denny's/IHop.

For those worried about the bad reviews concerning service - If you live in austin you should be used to the smug/overeducated waiter by now, so unless you are taking your grandparents and/or parole officer to lunch, go get the best migas in town.

Worth the wait! I eat here at least twice during visits to see family. Best pancakes hands down. Breakfast tacos, migas, it's all great. Definitely go early to beat the crowds.

Gingerbread pancakes are awesome. I recommend the breakfast tacos! Cramped interior but well worth the wait as the staff is very friendly. Great place to visit on the weekends. Just go early to beat the crowds.

This is a solid 4 star breakfast/lunch place. The food is good and the service good but nothing here is great. I mean the subpar wiat room next to the sometimes stinky bathroom - not to mention the limited parking and the wait...well you expect more.
The specials are definitely where it is at as I feel the are the freshest but I am a fan of the taco breakfast.
Not huge portions and occassionally the wait staff will be smug; what is up with that in Austin? - anyway the wait has never been too long and the food service is quick so you are eating not long after you order.
Wish is was a more well rounded breakfast menu or at least the pancake/french toast was a little better than average.
My wife is a big fan of the the Queso Omelette.

I have eaten here around 10 times and have never been disappointed. The food is great, reasonably priced and they are always open. I enjoy the way the staff remembers what I like and that they are so friendly. I have been working my way around the menu and can recommend the following dishes: love migas, huevos rancheros, corn pancakes (I have had them throw in jalepenos and also blueberries, ginger pancake (I added bananas). I also have tried the specials and had a great stuffed pepper the other night. I also like their sense of humor (the t-shirts read "sorry, we're closed' and also that they sponsor NPR.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin! The Caspian is the best dish and so is everything on the breakfast menu (breakfast is served 24 hours a day)! If you're going to go for dinner or for breakfast on the weekends, be prepared to wait..but it's worth it!

Magnolia's pancake recipe: sugar and spice and everything nice. No, not really. But they must put about a pound of butter and gallon of sugar in each stack. They're absolutely divine. Enough to send you into a comatose state, but, in my opinion, totally worth it.

Mag Mud is equally as delicious and probably carries a nutritional box that is equally as horrifying. But is definitely worth the extra notch in your belt.

Good prices, great atmosphere, totally delicious food - what's not to love? Start up your day with a stack of Magnolia pancakes and round it out with Mag Mud at night. Magnolia can feed you all day - and night - long!

All I have to say is- red potatoes for the home fries! They are delicious. I was afraid of the service from reading previous reviews. But my experience was very nice. I ordered an omelet not on the menu-avocado, bacon, cheddar, portabella- and they prepared it great to order with no hassles. I suppose if I had one thing to gripe about it would be thier coffee. Only because I like good gourmet coffee. Theirs is standard diner variety. Not bad, but considering the good food and great atmospere, they should have top notch coffee. They have a cool mural painted around the walls and a rotating art show, of local artists. Now that's cool!!

I have never knocked a resteraunt online, ecspecially one catering to the sixth street go-ers afterhours, but I cannot let my experience at Magnolia Lake Austin go. After work, two of my coworkers and I went there for food. We were having a conversation and were'nt ready to order when the waiter came to our table, he aggressively told us that we needed to hurry and order because they were getting slammed (which never actually happened, the room was only 2/4 full). Then, he avoided our table , walking past us and averting his eyes, we had to wait another 15 minutes to order. When we finally ordered he told us we were getting too much food, that it was going to take a long time. I tried to place a to-go order with him so he could put the order in all at once, but he said we could worry about that later. He brought our food and the check at the same time so I never even got to order my to go food. And worst of all, some actual rude customers who WERE drunk, came and sat at our table. The waiter told the guy to move his chair out of the aisle, and when my friend told the waiter they were'nt in our party, the waiter yelled at her and said " I don't care he still can't sit in the aisle".He should have asked THEM to leave , but instead WE were treated rudely. Being in the service industry myself I know what it is like to deal with jerks, but I can differentiate between jerks and nice people and the waitstaff at Magnolia obviously no longer takes the time to do that. If you want late night snacks, go to Star seeds, they may have rude waiters too, but at least the musics better and they refill your coffee.

I have been eating at the Magnolia for 15 years now. I love going there at all times of day, and have tried items from every part of the menu. Of course some things are a lot better than others. The pancakes are the best in town and you can never go wrong with the Love Veggies. The service can be random but I always feel that at least the staff are trying. This is the kind of restaurant that appears to employ people who actually care about their customer's experience, but at times they seem to be run a little ragged. One of my favorite things about going there is the fact that the restaurant has really managed to maintain that "old Austin" feel. The clientelle spans all age groups and the atmosphere is eclectic. I've noticed a marked change in the past few years in the quality of items on their dinner menu, and highly recommend trying one of the daily board specials. It seems a little weird ordering something here that costs more than ten dollars, but I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality.

Your immune system maybe up to the task, but why risk it.
For the heavy drinking, late night crowd or students, this is a great place. I was concerned with what I saw on my last visit. Utensils dirty, dropped food served, and staff uncleanliness. What I don't see in the kitchen can pass as the unknown won't hurt me, but out front with servers-yikes!

Lived in Austin 13+ years and don't get the popularityof this place? It's OK, just OK. Food has some good dishes and others that seem like they just lack a certain something--flavor perhaps? Service is my biggest complaint. Wait staff is the typical Austin slackers in those one size too small, proletariat brown t-shirts that always seem too cool to really care about good service.

They have one of the most creative uses of space at this restaurant. We came across a little bit of a wait, but I must say it was well worth it. Their staff is kept busy, but they're still friendly and on top of your order. You can't be a place that serves breakfast all day either.

We ate at Magnolia b/c it was recommended as one of the best places to go in Austin. The restaurant does have that "Austiny" feel, but everything else was way below par. The food was not good at all - bland and boring. The waitstaff was not polite and seemed rushed even though there was no crowd. We were disappointed with the appetizer and the main dish - I recommend NOT wasting your time or money here. If you looking for something with that Austin feel, go to Kirbey Lane instead.

The best in Austin, where different social classes come together to feed and be fed...The food is always great, and the best part--No deep-fryer!!! Everything is grilled to excellence and the staff are all clean and cute! If you have a problem there, you are the one in a million, because they aim to please! The cooks are well-seasoned, and love what they do. The owner's classic old school Austin, and still shows up for dinner! It is a place to take your patience, as any hopping little joint in town, and well worth the wait!

This is an Austin favorite! This restaurant is open 24 hours a day, and they serve breakfast all day long. They have a great menu with both vegetarian and non vegetarian options. Their mag mud caeso that has cheese, black beans, and avocado is a great appetizer with a bowl of salsa. They have really good migas, and pancakes. They offer smoking and non smoking seating. The place can get crowded late night and at brunch time on the weekends. It is a great place to go with friends to sit and visit and have everyone find something great to eat from the menu.

On News Years Eve my best friend and I decided to go after reading the reviews.. MISTAKE! Although the prices were good, the food was beneath worth the $20 we spent. It was sort of like eating inside of a break room of a thrift shop, and the music was far from relaxing. I ordered a hamburger with homade "fries"...but they were'nt exactly fries, they were like roasted potatoes seasoned very akwardly, my friend ordered the chiken fajitas.. the beans were jet black and the rice was dry and weird. The place is umm.. DIFFERENT, if your into that kinda thing, go for it, but if your more into "normal" dinning, don't bother!

The wife and I eat here every time we visit Austin. The last week of July we ate there twice in as many days because what the Magnolia does is special. The food is very fresh and simply creative. Voodoo spice burgers? Gingerbread pancakes? Catfish tacos? The waitstaff is not populated by bubbleheaded psychology majors still angry about not getting that record store job, but are instead concerned and menu-savvy folks. Sometimes you have to wait to get in- big deal. It is that good. And to someone who knew Austin pre-6th Street, the Magnolia on Lake Austin reminds what Austin was and still is in memory.

This has got to be one of the best restaurants that I have been to in a very long time. It is so nice to find a friendly restaurant offering creative healthy and vegetarian dishes with fresh ingredients. Other restaurants should really take a cue from Magnolia's. The crowd is always very eclectic and the waitstaff is friendly and laid back. Go here...no matter what your tastes are, you will not be dissapointed! I can't say enough good things about this place, I only wish that I lived closer!

What can I say, the mag is the best restaurant I've been to in a long time. The food is great, the staff is usually extraordinary, and it's one of those restaurants I can bring my posse and my mom, and they both like it. There is a wait often, but it either gives to time to catch up with the diners you are with, or (if you're at the south location), time to shop next door at Prima Dora, an eclectic gift store owned by the owners of the mag. There is a PA system so you hear when your name is called while shopping. Brilliant! While there, you might also rub elbows with stars, as I've done quite frequently

Whenever I travel I go though Magnolia pancake withdrawal. No one makes 'em like these guys. My regular order (which is hard to get in other parts of the world) is whole wheat pancakes with bananas and pecans. Yum! If you order an omlette definitely choose the pancake option (I think if you get just one -which is plenty- it counts as an even substitute for the other sides instead of an upcharge, and it's plenty of food.) If you don't want a whole omlette I order one of the above-mentioned pancakes and a veggie taco (Excellent) or, a three alarm taco if you like heat.
I've been less impressed with non-breakfast foods except for their mud and landscapes which are unique and delicious.

This is the place to go after a night on the town. Good coffee and everything else. But it does get crowded.

On a lazy Saturday morning in early August my girlfriend and I decided to have a nice breakfast here. She had been here before and was absolutely enamored with their eggs Florentine. I wasn't sure what I was having, but I was hungry for something delicious. I was not disappointed. When we got there, I realized we werent the only ones with the same idea. The waiting wasnt too long (15 min) and the complementary coffee while we waited was nice. To start with, we had the Neptune ($3.95) appetizer, which was fantastic. She had her eggs while I decided to try the Eggs Benedict special ($7.50 ea.). All of the food was great, the crowed was filled with typical hip Austinites, and the service was actually pretty good. All this food and 2 cups of coffee ($1.35 ea) totaled $23.44. An overall great value for the portions and quality.

Ambience is great but you can't eat it. The reason to go to Magnolia is the food. My preference is the south Congress location. I don't understand why that other popular place is so crowded. When I was there the service was poor, the food was cold and it was crowded.

This place is great. I always go after a night out, and there's never a huge wait. Plus, the staff is always friendly, even at 2:30 am!

Magnolia Cafe (MC) on South Congress is consistently good food and good service and is my favorite 24-hour Austin eatery. The location on Lake Austin Blvd is a bit more random depending on what the staff is into out back, but eveyone is nice and the food is always good. Breakfest foods rank among my favorites at MC but I am often lulled away by the Carne Queso and fine selection of Tex-Mex and sandwiches. Avoid the home fries unless you're into boiled potatoes.

. . . any time of the day, be it 5am or 5pm. A homey, casual set-up with generally friendly servers who never make you feel rushed, even when it's busy.
