I usually never complain about any Asian type of food as long as it taste fine, its decent and as long as I can eat it.. BUT I must say, first time I ever tried this place, I ordered the egg rolls and their fried rice and it tasted AWFUL.

I come to Ocean Palace on the weekend afternoon for dim sum. The very large room on the upstairs level, which doubles as a banquet hall for weddings at night, is spacious enough to accommodate large parties (think large Asian families) and small. The dim sum is pretty good but on the expensive side. The har gow (shrimp dumplings) is $4.95 and the chinese broccolli is also $4.95, a bit high in my opinion. But their staples like the siu mai is only $2.95 and they taste just like in Hong Kong. They have a stand in the back where you can order wonton soup and fried turnip cakes, among other things, and there is never a short supply of carts passing along the aisles. You may have to wait for the more popular items like the shrimp gee cheong fun, or the har gow because they sell out quickly but dim sum is so fun because it's instant gratification. See what you want, point at it, and it's served to you right away. No waiting for your order. Just sit down and start eating!

I took my husband for our anniversary today to this restaurant. We had a wonderful time. The Dim Sum was very tasty especially the egg plant. The atmosphere was very nice. This is a place to take your time to go and eat and have good conversation. We will go back!!!

By far the worst meal I have ever eaten (and I've been to England).
Being new to Houston I wanted to try some authentic asian food. I could Ignore the bad service but not the foul tasting food. Seriously, if you can?t get a good Chinese meal in Asia town?. I should have known better when I went into the restaurant and there were no Asian people eating there.
I went back to work on Monday and told my asian co-workers where I went for lunch on the weekend and they laughed at me.
The fish tanks were pretty though.
Enjoy

We love this restaurant for dim sum on Sundays. However, please do not support the purchase of shark fin soup. The manager has noted that this restaurant only serves real shark fin soup - no imitations. Sharks are being decimated throughout the oceans to meet the demands of Asian restaurants serving shark fin soup. This "delicacy" is creating endangered species. Stick to the wonton or egg drop.

You must understand the idiosyncricies of an Asian establishment outside Asia. If you are Caucasian and cannot handle being in a foreign setting, you will be put off by the "poor" service. If you have never been to an establishment in one of the larger Chinatowns in North America you will not understand the personality of an Asian outside their homeland. For me, this was a bit of a comfort food place even though it is large and a bit institutional feeling. No, the food is not quite what you would get in China. But, it is not what you get on a typical Chinese buffet aimed at people looking for quantity instead of quality. It was decent and you can certainly choose the things you want after being able to see what it looks like. Overall this is a decent experience.

The only thing I liked was the Phoneix feet. It was made very well, except the taste could use a little more seasoning. Everything else was not good. Had to go to a line to get dim sum for some of the stuff. Some of the stuff was pretty bad and it left a bad taste in our mouths. Service was ok, but when it got busy, very little to no service. Some of the cart people just passes by and not even ask if we wanted anything (particularly one of two ladies). I'm thinking, do they want us to order or what? Will never eat there or take anyone there again.

This place is nasty and it has a lot of oil and msg. I get thirsty so fast, i end up drinking like 5 cups of water within 10 minutes after i ate. I went there with a group of friends and we just wanted to try different restaurants in bellaire. i could not believe we went there. I mean service is not good at all and the food is messy. Also, I have to get up and walk to the waiter to ask for more water.

My boyfriend and I went to Ocean Palace for dim sum on Sunday morning. 4 Hours later, my boyfriend started having symptoms of food p o i s o n i n g and was hospitalized. they said it was food p o i s o n i n g....from what kind of bacteria, we dont know yet. But it was definitely from something he ate at this dump. now we know that we will never come back to this place, and so will our friends.

ocean palace looks flashy on the outside, but the food is bland, generic, and way overpriced. you can skip the lavish decor and the fountains and get better food for cheaper elsewhere in chinatown.

Great egg tart and the steam rice noodle with fried bread inside. Other Dim Sums are so so. Stir Fried Udon or Rice noodle are also good

May not be top notch Cantonese food. However, good selection, good food, good experience, and just next to HK market for more food and things Asian.

During the week, Ocean Palace offers dim sum, but it is not as fresh, the menu is not as diverse, nor is the service as good.

On weekends and holidays, however, the dim sum is almost always delicious. The seafood items are especially well done. My husband says the chicken feet are usually quite excellent, although I would not be able to vouch for that!

They can ocassionally have a broken credit card machine and will only accept cash, so make sure you have cash beforehand.

If you are not experienced with dim sum it can be difficult to know what to order. The staff are not particularly helpful in this matter on weekends and holidays, because it is literally packed and they are doing the best they can to get to all the tables in a timely fashion.

Be sure to get to the restaurant early. The later you go, the less number of dishes are available.

PROS: Good service, great prices, wide variety of dishes, and truly authentic
CONS: Parking is a nightmare, sometimes they run out of certain items

A lot of people go here for some diem sum on sunday right after church. Their food is ok but the hot girls there are worth it. Meet and mingle with some of the hottest asian girls. The food is priced alright.

Ocean Palace is great for dim sum, but like most dim sum restaurants, it's best to go early in the morning, specifically before 11:00 am if you want fast, decent service or just a seat. We usually go at around 10:30 when the restaurant is only about 1/6th full. During that time, the waiters and cart-pushers tend to be much more friendly and faster, but it all changes after 11:30 when the restaurant instantly becomes as packed as a sardin can.

It's fortunate that the dim sum area on the second floor is extremely large and spacious because there are no separations therefore when it's all packed, it tends to get extremely loud and almost chaotic.

Overall though, the food is great and if you go early enough, the atomsphere is quite enjoyable.

it has a great reputation, and very rightly so. you are usually seated quickly in their huge 2nd floor reserved for dim sum, and the carts come quick. dinner is fairly good as well, but the dim sum experience is much more memorable.

PROS: quick seating, wide variety of dishes
CONS: finding parking on weekends is not fun

Ocean Palace for dim sum on Sundays is like a whole different world. Make sure you get there by 11:00'ish or else there will be a wait. I've been on 3 different occasions and the food was always very good, with a good variety. The service sometimes seems rushed (well they are trying to get the waiting people seated) but overall, it's well worth your trip.

This place may appeal to the American palate, but ask any Asian person, and they will tell you this is one the the worst Chinese restaurants in town. The only upside is that they have a huge ballroom upstairs that caters to the typical large Asian wedding receptions. Other than that, the food is nasty and the service is just not there. The dim sum is just OK. I would much rather go somewhere else for that.

After My Canh closed down, Ocean Palace popped up with My Canh's cooks.. so Ocean Palace took over as Houstons Dim Sum King.. The place can get a bit crowded during lunchtime on weekends - only b/c its the best dim sum in town! It might be hard to know what to order if you don't speak Chinese though.

I thought Ocean Palace had the best dim sum in Chinatown. I've tried so many places around SW Houston and I couldn't find any that matched it. Also, their selection of seafood, and even frog and duck clams are WONDERFUL! This is a can't miss restaurant in Houston.

If you want to have good real Chinese food, this is definitely worth trying. Try to order dishes other than those that you can order from those 'Hunan restaurants'. For example, try the Hong Kong style sweet and sour pork with fresh pineapple.
