Vela's is one of the older dining spots in Harlingen. It is a "local" secret. With simple tables or booths to sit at, walls covered with posters of youngsters they sponcer for various activites and a real juke box that plays anything from old Spanish love songs to golden oldies and popular groups I've never even heard of. it has a comfortable atmosphere. Daily specials are written on a board as you walk in. Specialties not found at other "Mexican" establishments are what draws my husband and I back time and again. Menudo, Heuvos Rancheros, and chicharones for him. My passion is nopales with huevo or taco a la Mexicana. The food is served fast and hot. Coffee cups are kept full. The price is reasonable. The spouse is pleased that he can ask for a bowl of pico de gallo on the side and it will be made just for him. The food is simple and there have been a few times that the quality of the food was not up to my expectations. The dining room fills up quickly after church and it has stayed open 24/7 in the past, but that may have changed. It may look like a "Greasy spoon" from a quick drive by, but it is a must to experience at least once in the valley.
