Great food and great atmosphere, but place can be very crowded. Margaritas are great but be sure to bring your wallet... very expensive. I recommend the fajitas!

When i first got there the waiter told me he was recommending the fajita fiesta to our party of 30 because it was easier, and i suggested we needed menus because i was sure not everyone wanted that dish. He never refilled our soda, was extremely rude and sarcastic. The customer service was horrible, and to top it off there was only 1 waiter for our party of 30, and we were not his only big party. Then he overcharged one person in our party for the 1lb fajiata dinner that feeds two people when my friend pointed on the menu and showed him the 1/2 pound. This is not the first time i have heard of overcharging at this place, so beware and check your receipts. I am making a complaint to the SBB and have this restaurant investigated for fraudulent charges to customers. I was very unhappy. Had the waiter been nicer I would have tipped double what the gratuity was. The food was also not that great. The fajitas that my friend ordered were very fatty. Gross!!!! Horrible all over.

After combing through the bulk of the reviews and considering my own expierence, I have concluded that the management or the staff have been writing the deceiving "above average+" reviews. The food was way-way below par (judging based on food sampled on at least three continents). The meat quality was not even suited for canning!!!! If you order beef brisket, would you expect nicely cubed pieces of fat?! Moreover, I thought it was quite akward to receive a mixture of rice and past as a side ... After living in (and eating my way through) Houston for three months, I have to say that this restaurant is the worst in Houston. I feel cheated monetary wise and time wise! Putting it in perspective I have had better meals in Botswana!

I like to go to El Tiempo every time I'm in Houston because I miss good Tex-Mex up in New England. I know good Tex-Mex after living in Texas for almost all of my life, and I really enjoy the seafood-Tex Mex fusion at El Tiempo. It's the best Tex-Mex I've found in Houston. The crab enchiladas are a favorite, and the cheese enchiladas, drowning in grease like they should be, are amazing. The salsa and guacamole dip served with tortilla chips are great. Queso and tres leches cake are delicious too. I love sitting on the patio, which is covered and whimsically decorated. It's a lively place, a little crowded inside, but I still love to go with my family. It's not as good as the hole-in-the-wall places I've eaten at in other towns, but it's still very tasty.

The valet is pricey, but the food is appropriately priced and quite speedy. The service staff seems a little overextended and they forgot to bring my queso last time, although they were otherwise attentive with refills and whatnot. They are also very friendly and helpful. Also, we never make reservations but seating is usually immediate.

I recommend El Tiempo Cantina--it's a fun place with good food for a great value. It's always a nice experience to go.

Crowded with low class people. We had a reservation for a table of 10, we waited 1 1/2 hour to get our table. The food was worse than mediocre, I had the carne asada and I implore all those who come across it NOT to order it. It's made of poor quality meat that is stringy and fatty for a price of $17 or so. Margarita was awful, way too strong to taste like anything. I got sick shortly after leaving the restaurant. The food is a disgrace to the Mexican cuisine, the prices are way over what they should be, the service is pathetic and the host staff is incompetent.

I do not recommend this place for anything else other than sitting on the patio on a nice day (and we all know those days are rare in Houston)

Will not return, will not recommend, will not even eat there for free.

Its not the best place in the world but it has great food and the sangria margaritas are good too. The place can get pretty crowded so it makes it difficult to park and get around the restaurant. I've never had a big problem getting in without a reservation, i dont even know if they make reservations. They have complimentary valet because the parking situation isnt good at all. I recommend it to anyone who is willing to put up with a crowd.

I went there last night for Cinco De Mayo and the Margaritas were terrible! Obviously they had made a big batch and nobody had tried it before they served them. I've never been a huge fan of the place but yesterday was the worst. The prices are so high for the quality of food that you get and they nickel and dime you for everything. I was charged $2.50 for some sliced jalape?os!! There are so many good Mexican restaurants in the Houston area and I don't know why people give this place so much hype. If you know what good Mexican food is supposed to taste like then you will not enjoy this place. Basically you are paying to people watch and the people are not all that!

We visited Tiempo after escaping from Tila's and what a difference. We were met at the door and seated on the patio immediately. The service was excellent and the food superior. It may be a little expensive for the selection, but the ambience and quality of food are a good value.Very good tequila selection.

El tiempo always has awesome waiters, the best chicken fajitias, the best homemade tortillas I've ever had.

But the most important thing... they have fantastic queso. Usually have to split an order of fajitias with my boyfriend because we can never finish 2 meals.

We have tried countless Mexican restauants all over Houston and the Richmond location of El Tiempo is still my favorite. Yes, it's always on the crowded side- but good places always are. Yes, it's usually noisy, but it makes it fun. Yes, the food is pricier than some places, but I'll pay it when the food, drinks, and service are consistently this good. Everything I've ever eaten here is great, but my favorite is pretty basic... the cheese enchiladas rock my world- great comfort food. My husban'd fave- the carnitas- and you'll love how they serve these (on a little metal tower type tray over hot coals-they serve several things this way). The ritas (always get mine on the rocks) are yummy and extremely potent. I would not recommend drinking more than 2... by 3 you'll need someone to drive you home... 4 or more and you'll really be hating life in the morning. El Tiempo also has a very good lunch menu, nice brunch, and is usually pretty fun for happy hour at the bar. I don't love the parking situation, but when you put it into perspective...you're already going to an upscale Mexican restuarant and will probably be splurging a bit on food and drink...so tipping the valet a few bucks is really no biggie. And one of these days, maybe I won't overdo it on appetizers, the fabulous chips and salsa, and my entree and finally get to try their tres leches...or maybe I should just plan to take it home with me. YUM!

the food here is just exceptional. fresh, delicious ingredients make for exquisite dishes and strong but tasty drinks. food this good is usually paired with fancy attire, hushed conversations and stuffy staff, but here the atmosphere is relaxed and lively.
people who complain about the prices should frequent other places because the value here really is worth it.
i'm a regular as long as they're open!

I love this restaurant. The price might be slightly more than other mexican restaurants but the quality is more than worth it! very friendly staff, beautiful atmosphere. Sometimes there is a wait, but they usually get you seated quicker than stated. The margaritas are fabulous (I can only drink about two)! Absolutely, without a doubt the best fajitas I have ever had! Its definitely a meeting place for my friends and I to meet up monthly for dinner. Our favorite!

I finally started going here in the last year or two, and while it costs quite a bit, the quality is commendable. If you're into their big fajitas hot plates and want something different, try the carnitas (pork). They have convenient size choices for guacamole appetizers (and serve several ingredients on the side so you can mix in whatever you like). Unfortunately, it can be pretty noisy and crowded with the after-work folks, and waiting for a table or just trying to hear my date in addition to the steeper prices leads me to shy away from giving a higher rating. Although I don't smoke, my favorite seating area is the smoking section, so maybe they can shift people around at some point!

The owner of the cabaret next door made me pretty angry one time. A friend who was joining us for dinner came in and told us how the owner had told her she couldn't park there, and rudely went on to tell her she should be working for him, anyway. I half wanted to confront him when I went outside, but I guess it's just as well that he wasn't there. I talked to the El Tiempo valets and they said he's crazy and have had issues with him in the past.

I went to El Tiempo Monday night with a group of about 10 people. We were seated outside on the patio. The salsa was good - not too spicy. They also had a complimentary avocado/sour cream type of dip that was paired with the chips - very good. The frozen margaritas were good but strong - limit yourself to two max. Overall, a casual Mexican restaurant with pretty good food.

We used to eat here at the Washington location a lot, its close to work. One day I went in to order some tortillas and some queso and chips/salsa. The bill is $15...FOR TORTILLAS and QUESO?? I said that's ridiculous I've been ordering that for years from the other location and its $8. Told me that these are the prices and their chips/salsas aren't for free and cost per ITEM. I've NEVER seen any other Mexican restaurant charge for such things on to go orders. They have become SO overpriced. The food is good, but worth the price they charge now? No way. I can't say I've had a pleasant experience there in quite sometime. This week we called to make a reservation for a birthday, thinking well, at least they take reservations and have great margaritas. For a reservation, I was told I had to put a $200 deposit down on my table, $100 per six people. Since when is this a club. I would never put a deposit down on a table at a local mexican restaurant, it is NOT Tavern on the Green. That for me was it. That is out of control and frankly the food and customer service don't hold a candle to some of the other Mexican restaurants in Houston...We'll be going to Escalante's instead.

Cons: cost compared to quality of food, $100 deposits per 6 people for reservations, rude staff

.

Way too expensive for the quality of food that is served. Way too noisy, fajitas barely compete with the corner tex-mex joint, margaritas have little to no tequila (and the price they charge for fruit juice is criminal). Went there with a group of ten people. With the exception of the two 24 year old folks who brought us there, everybody thought the same thing. This place is a ripoff. I guess you have to be younger than 30 and "hip" to think this restaurant is good. Most times I like to give a restaurant a second chance because it may have been a bad night. This place? Too mucho dinero to ever try again.

i absolutely love the ambience!: a quaint grotto that feels like your in a cozy, exotic mexican locale. it's unlike any mexican hole-in-the-walls in town: it's not dirty, it's not grimey, it's not sleazy. the food was amazing! surprisingly big portions for a decent price ... complement it with their equally amazing margaritas and you're in heaven. the staff was a bit slow, but the food more than makes up for that. definitely a chill place to soak in the festive aura ... feels like you're vacationing in mexico~!*

I would honestly say that this is the best Mexican food in Houston. I don't usually order fajitas, but the fajitas at this place, on the burning charcoals with the butter sauce, are the best I have ever had. You will have to wait, but the bar area is fun, and the wait is never that bad. The prices are higher here than most other Mexican restaurants, but the ambiance and quality of food are, in my opinion, more than worth it.

Well, what can I say the food is delicious, and very EXCELENTE! The service is great Waiters,Bussers,Hostess, and Managers are very friendly! The food is great from the chips & salsa, to the Enchiladas. But I have a little problem with the tortillas. The ones that were made before were good. The tortillas that they are serving now taste like the ones from Taco Cabana and Chachos.Eveything is excellent except for the tortillas i would appriciate if they would be bring back the recipe. But i do highly recommend this restaurant for any special ocassion.Very clean, very appropriate, and the service is just great!

without doubt, the BEST beef fajitas ever - i have a bunch of friends who prefer lupe or papasitos. they must be delusional!!! el tiempo slays them both HANDS DOWN! there is simply no comparison. AND id put the frozen margaritas among the top 3 in town. i dont however largely reccomend anything else on the menu (all tends to be a bit "over cheesed" - for lack of a better word)

My comments are this: Managers, get your staff together and discuss possibly sending all staff to a training seminar once in a while. Wait staff, bartenders, bussing staff, including the managers need to be able to handle a busy and popular place like El Tiempo. Your food is very good, a bit pricy, but worth it, your drinks are outstanding, but you need to be competitive in every way in order to continue with your success. If not, word gets around and soon you will find yourself wondering, "what happened?" First rule: Advise your staff not to talk about tips in front of the clientele. Many of the customers are in a tipping type of service and it is very rude and distasteful. Keep your comments to yourselves or talk about it AFTER the restaurant closes.

The best fajitas in Houston, especially their steak fajitas. I usually split the steak fajitas and rib (castillas) combo, and the ribs are actually VERY good. Portions are big, so it is good to share. The price is reasonable, too, and I always end up spending more on booze than food. Their margaritas are the best, but extremely potent, so beware! The one on Richmond can get pretty packed on the week-end, but the wait normally isn't too long and you can occupy yourself with a margarita.

Pros: fajitas and ribs, margaritas, service

It gets extremely expensive if they convince you to add the shrimp, but best fajitas in all of Houston. Maybe all of Texas.

To be sure El Tiempo's margaritas are phenom! It is a thing of complete beauty and should be considered a Texas treasure. The food here is the bomb and the only proof you need to know that this place is the best in Houston is how damn crowded and alive it is inside on a thursday night.
ETC has the best of everthing and you will not be dissapointed!!!!

The food here is great. If you are a crab lover, you have to try the crab enchiladas. It is a great place to show off to a friend or your co-workers. Presentations are very eye appealing! We love it. If you don't like it, you should go to a fast food restaurant. Or at least learn how to spell, see review below.

The margaritas at this restaurant are sooo good you really don't know how LETHAL they are till it's too late. It reminds me of dinking trash can punch many years ago, you really can't tell youre buzzed until you find yourself talking louder and feeling a little warm all over. 1 max at lunch or the rest of the day could end up blown off!!!!

Pros: Big portions, Good music

Cons: Parking

Terrible service. I was told I had to valet or park yourself myself in the street. Second, my party if six was made to get up AFTER we had been seated because we were not ordering dinner - this after we had ordered six margaritas at $8 a pop. Food was comparable to Taco Cabana at 4 star restaurant prices.

I will never return.

Let it be known that El Tiempo Cantina has the three pillars of excellence... the opposite sex, stiff drinks, and highest quality fare. The mixed grill for 2 feeds at least 4, the women during happy hour are hot and wild, and the atmosphere is electric.

CRAB ENCHILADAS!!!! A perfect meal is the rice and beans and crab enchiladas!! OK and a margarita or two. But the crab enchiladas. Have I mentioned just how much I love them. I go to El Tiempo quite frequently and I can't tell you about anything else on the menu because I've never gotten past the CRAB ENCHILADAS.

These are wonderful ritas!!! The BEST!

Food is a little overpriced for what you get - still, fills you up and stuffs you! The shrimp are outstanding. So-so on the enchiladas. Very good guacamole. Waiters barely speak english and are very nice.

I invited some friends of mine to meet up with me for happy hour and dinner to follow at El Tiempo. The best-looking happy hour crowd in Houston, Period! I have found my favorite Margarita and fajitas in town. You cannot miss the authentic Mexican breakfast. It is a really great value for the buck-the portions are huge. The service is warm and consistent.

El Tiempo moved into the old Dixie Road House and thereby saved us some driving. Best is the grilled quail. But the sauces and meats taste like somebody is cooking back there who really enjoys cooking.

The food at El Tiempo Cantina -Richmond location- varies from bad to inedible. The fajitas were rubbery and dry, the flavor was below average. The fish taco was inedible; the fish meat was probably several days old (it smelled like old fish). The enchiladas were about 80% cheese and 20% sauce and tortillas; and the cheese was not 'queso fresco'.

Avoid I-10, Downtown is good
Review of El Tiempo Cantina by LarryBrown

Remember, I'll almost eat Alpo without noticing. We went to the fancy and impressive looking El Tiempo Cantina on I-10 around Blalock. Inedible! I had a combo platter that featured about 5 items, I couldn't eat a single one. I just left it there on the plate. I didn't even let my wife pack it up to take home.

Later I went out with the guys from work downtown and they took me to El Tiempo Cantina there. That was much better! Actually pretty good.

This place offers one of the best fajita in town. I particularly like quail fajita here. I tried different tex-mex places every weekend, no place can really match the taste of the quail here. I love green rice and warm salsa also. This place is a bit too noisy.

The best mexican restaurant in Houston bar none. I am a Mexican Food enthusiast and I can say that their chicken fajitas are the best I've ever eaten. The menu is robust but can get pricy. The fajitas for one are enough for two, which helps. Magaritas will knock your socks off. Be careful! Richmond location is a happening happy hour. Bottom line, if you haven't eaten here, it's a must!

This place has GREAT drinks....but be very careful. The alcohol content in those bad boys could start a forest fire. Just a bit of information, take it slow because they will bit back.

The powerful margarita that made Ninfa's famous is served at the Laurenzo brothers' hotspot---and its popularity has never wavered. A vaguely mission decor, accented with giant sepia-toned prints of Mexican aristocracy, have a lot to do…
