When Anna Marie ran it, the place was wonderful. Now I can't even tell if it's still in business. The outside is covered with something & no one answered the phone when I tried calling earlier this week.
Anyone no what's going on there?

Okay, So today me and two of my friends went to old Heidelberg's looking for some authentic German cuisine sadly i have to say the restaurant is not what any of us had hoped it would be. First of all when we first walked in there was a woman singing live which would have been fun entertainment save for the fact that her voice overpowered my own thoughts and every song was in broken Spanish. after sitting and hearing about 2 more minutes of this we asked to be moved outside which doesn't have the most pleasing view but was better than the makeshift dance floor in the restaurant occupied by forty and over seniors who decided it was a great time to start a mass PDA movement so back to our seats outside one chair was broken and all tables were dirty we ordered drinks and a appetizer which was delicious but hey i could get some sausage and a couple of deli cheese slices from walmart for well under the outrageous 10 dollars they robbed me of. next was the main course the food was okay other than the fact that it was a poor American imitation of traditional German food ..the sauerkraut was from a can and the wienerschnitzel was pork not the traditional veal which was off putting but considering the veal was a whopping 20 bucks i decided i could suffer the sacrifice. the service was not up to par either the waitress came out maybe 1 or2 times in our 2 hour stay and offered us nothing until we asked. after footing the erroneous bill and officially spending NAY wasting a night at old Heidelberg's i can confidently say that if your ever looking for German food in Houston skip this hole in the wall and opt for Rudi Lechner's on gessner far better food better atmosphere better service good German music instead of the later monotonous playings of an old Marc Anthony CD after the obnoxious live music stopped. Bottom-line this place was terrible if you want a nice german place with a personal touch and a lot of adventure head for Rudi's 2503 S. gessner and westheimer you wont be disappointed -rudilechners.com-

I come from Chicago where Germantown and all ethnic restaurants are just the best. I went to this restrant about 15 years ago, and continued to go there for the music and being single, to meet guys and giriends there. It was a meeting place for the plus fifty crowd and it was fun. Now it just reminds me of a quiet restaurant that has fallen quietly into dispair. The food was not what I remembered and I wasn't give the cabbage and rye at the table free. Everything was costly and did not have that special flair I remembered. The Weinerschnichel was too crisp and not enough vegs......everything was dipped and fryed. All in all, I wish this place was the same as I remembered, but I guess that's too much to ask. There used to be another German restaurant off Post Oak.......Does anybody remember the name???

Pros: down

The food was really amazing, and the waiter was incredibly attentive for how busy he was. Very friendly!

The atmosphere is rather loud, but could be entertaining for a weekend night. We were expecting a full German experience, but it was quite Americanized. None the less, we will definitely go back. :-)

It?s me again. It was on Friday January 30th, 2009, and what a great way to start a new year. I came in around 7:30pm to meet with a group of friend. Even though, I ate early (5:30pm) and was not ?that hungry?; But knowing that I would have to stay for awhile, I decided to order something to eat so I would not go home hungry.
I requested to speak to the owner and ask to see if they have something light. The cook came out and suggested something she recently came up with, it is called ?WIENERWICH?. It is a Wienerschnitzel sandwich on a white toasted bun (instead of rye bread) with lettuce and melted swiss cheese, it has a special spread which enhanced the flavour of the meat, so good that I had to take a second bite before putting it down and opened it up to see what?s inside. The order also came with german potato infused with bacon and onion and garnished with slices of tomatoes and pickles. I washed it down with a cold glass of ?Paulaner?. For those who prefer other kind of meat, The Old Heidelberg also offers the wienerwich with chicken.

Pros: walked away with a complete satisfaction.

Cons: Again? None

I'd driven by the Old Heidelberg for many years and finally decided to go. The menu is strictly "rib-sticking" German food, although they do have some low carb entries. The bread arrived but was cold, not warmed up. Salads come with dinner, but they never came (for 4 people??) In fairness, we never followed up, we were so busy talking. Lots of people got up and danced. I was expecting oompah music, but it wasn't. You need to go to Rudi Lechner's for that. If you're older, love to dance, want a cozy atmosphere, this is the place! Service was good, attentive.

We went on a Saturday night (1/19) and the service and food was awful. We even had to send a plate back and the waitress came back and said the cook was "angry" because we did not like the food quality ... so we had to pay for it! The service was terrible ... very slow. Waitress was rude telling us to hurry up and order because she "didn't have all day". Beer was hot. Bathrooms were dirty ... ceiling tiles were stained in the bathrooms and falling down. We will never go back. One of the worst dining evenings I have ever had. TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me and my husband have gone to other german restaurants before but this place is a WHOLE lot better. The food was very fresh, and extermely tasty. The variety of wines/beer is more than your typical restaurant, and the workers and very educated about their products and food. The band plays many types of music and everyone has such a good time relaxing and listening to the band. Staff is also very nice. This is the type of place I would definitely go to again to enjoy my time and have excellent food. I had no complaints!

A group of us went to the Old Heidelberg to celebrate a birthday, and it was great! I had gone a few times long ago, but it was better this time. The food was authentic German food (I am familiar with German food), the service was very good with friendly and professional staff, and the live music made the place very cozy and friendly. Ever since the new ownership food quality has improved, and the minor remodelings of the place have definitely opened up the whole area. The band plays a variety of great music, and there are more than 60 different types of beers to choose from. We enjoyed our time there very much and would recomment it to anyone, we'll be going back for some more German food pretty soon.

Living in the area we decided to try the Heidelberg, and boy was that a mistake. The waitress was terrible, when we asked to get clean silverware she didn't understand, she didn't speak english, spanish, or german (we had all these languages covered at the table by chance). We asked what the soup of the day was and were told it as cold soup, but she couldn't tell us what the soup base was or anything else. The food was extremely expensive and after about a 45 minute wait we finally got ice cold grease. It was not good. They only had about 5 German type dishes on the menu too. The live entertainment was even worse. It was a man and a women allegedly singing karaoke style (not karaoke night, they just didn't have a band), however, whenever they would put down the mics the vocals would still be going on, they were lip syncing, and not to very good vocals either!

In summary the place is very dirty, extremely expensive, wait staff is rude and doesn't comprehend, all while serving cold junk in substitution for food.

This was my first time in this restaurant and I was be annoied! The table and the silver was dirty. The same with the restrooms, nasty!
We had order the "Combo for two"-the food was cold and looks not good! Not real German! The best from this plate was the "Wienerschnitzel" but the other food was not real German and not good. The waitress was slow and not motivated. I come from Germany and excuse - this restaurant is not real German! The place is dirty and the food was bad!

Every time I've visited this restaurant it was for lunch and the waitresses were simply unattentive and took no pride in their work. While the food itself was average, the dining experience could have been greatly enhanced by more attentive and polite wait staff.

I took my wife to this place for celebrating her birthday. The food was delicious, the live music (various different styles) was well performed and good for dancing, the service was great (pick the waiter with german accent) and the atmosphere was nice for romance (including candle and flowers in your table). The band accepts special requested songs, too. Definitely a must-see. I spend US$ 75 total, and stood there from 8:00 to 12:00am.

The Old Heidelberg is one of my favorite establishments. Immediately after walking in you feel right at home. The waitors are so friendly and the live music and dancing was very entertaining. I was so surprised to see how people in the Old Heidelberg all seem to know eachother, it was like a big family. When I went with my husband on a Saturday night, it was quite busy and everyone was up and about talking and meddling like in a big party. It was our anniversary, and our waitor was nice enough to ask the band to play some music for us. As for the food, the schnitzel was delicious and I recommend the apple strudel.

OH used to be one of my favorite places to get German food. Tonight I returned for the first time in over a year with my wife, who was raised in Germany. I was immediately surprised to find the place mostly empty, at 7:30 on Friday night. Like the previous reviewer, we ordered the sausage and cheese platter. The sausage tasted like plain grocery store smoked sausage, and the cheese was processed cheese slices. This was $8. You have got to be kidding me. Next we had the sampler platter, which had a selection of German "specialties." Most of the items were greasy and did not compare well to authentic German cuisine. There are other German places in town that offer much better food and atmosphere - stick to them.

First time to OH. Service was awful and SLOW. Food came out nearly one hour after ordering--once we *finally* got someone to take our order. Food was mediocre at best. Bratwurst/"knackwurst" (according to menu) was flavorless, tiny amount of sauerkraut was a real let-down, "German" potatoes were just plain ol' potatoes. Sausage and Cheese appetizer plate had 6 tiny, paper-thin triangles of cheese, some of which I thought might have been Kraft singles (except they were too thin!). $60 (for two, no dessert) for this meal was a crime. The ONLY bright spot--the potato soup and cucumber salad were very good. And somehow, although we were directly behind smokers at a non-smoking table, we never smelled any cigarette smoke!!! Amazing that this was the most notable thing about this restaurant.
