The rooms reflect the Art Nouveau style of the 1920s in their use of the stained glass ivy window panels and the decorative plaster corn and wheat motif of the miller's trade. The restaurant is open for both breakfast and lunch and features baked items--breads, pastries, pancakes and waffles--as well as sandwiches, soups, salads and our specialty, biscuits and gravy. The museum displays pioneer flourmills memorabilia as well as Guenther family photos and remembrances. Of special delight to collectors are the Dresden china anniversary plates. These were made in Germany until WWII and were given to customers of the Mill. The River Mill Store offers gourmet baking mixes, custom stoneware, cookware, and other gift items. The rooms themselves, once formerly the music room and bedroom, feature fireplaces and distinctive tile work that are part of the original decor.

The Scene
History buffs are in for a treat; this building dates back one and a half centuries. The original two-story home was completed in 1860 next to founder's Texas Milling Pioneer business. Both thrive today, including the restaurant, which opened in 1988. Check out the company store and museum. Decorative fireplaces are on all three floors, and there are two views of San Antonio River. There are also three tables for carryout patrons and a terrace roof garden for private parties (built in 1927).

The Food
Food is prepared fresh daily. Taco soup isn't too spicy, and boasts plenty of vegetables with chips. Biscuits are light, not too doughy. The beef stew is thick and heavenly. The most popular dishes are champagne chicken enchiladas with tossed salad and chicken salad plate with seasonal fruit. Portions are generous, especially pastries that taste as good as they look. The pecan spicy bun could feed two.

Quaint Setting

by Michelle D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,901

This is a lovely little site for breakfast & lunch. It has a quaint gift shop in which you can buy many of the mixes for the items served in the restaurant. It also has a little museum in which the Guenther Family's home is displayed as it would have been when the Pioneer Flour Mill was built. It would be a lovely site for brunch, or even a bridemaid luncheon or casual wedding!!

Great little place in the King William area

by bluerivertj

Looking for breakfast, brunch or lunch in the historic King William district? This is the place for you and your guest. The restaurant is located in the Poineer Mill Wing by the San Antonio River. The place is small, cute, it has an old time feel and cozy. The menu is limited, not a huge selection but what they have is scrumptious. The biscuit and gravy is huge, full of flavor, light and fluffy. The smoked applewood bacon is heaven: crispy, not salty and thick. The waffle and pancakes: yum. The house special coffee is delicious. Look to the blackboard at the door for the daily special. Get there early or be patient. As I said the place is small waiting time can be 30 - 45 minutes. They will hand you a pager for your wait, so you can spend this time browsing the muesum, shop or walking by the river watching the ducks. If the weather is permitting you can choose to eat out in the patio, it is great on a nice cool morning eating your breakfast watching the humming birds zoom by. The staff is friendly, the food served hot and your coffee cup is always filled. Visitors visting the King William area should finish their tour by having brunch here.

Pros: Beautiful scenery, good food, friendly staff, parking

overall a great place to go...

by pguerra

The Guenther House has a great ambiance, great long time servers, and never changing recipes.
I have been going to this restraunt since i was 15 i am now 23 i have gotten to know the staff very well and they provide the best service due to there circumstance. Thr house is very old so there is not very much space to work but the food will be excellent and hot with out a doubt. They dont and have never sold alcohol and the House is not handicap accessible "no two walls connect to add an elevator".
What to try: Biscuits and gravy "amazing and big' if too big try the 1/2 order
chicken salad sandwich has always been my favorite
and before you leave take a coffee cake or cinnamon roll with you they are to die for....

Pros: great food, great servers and atmosphere

Cons: parking

Wonderful food... Ridiculous lines!!

by txnewsgirl

We ended up taking the food to-go because the wait was an hour and 45 minutes! We decided to take the food across the street to a park bench. When we go back, we'll probably do that again. As for the food, it was yummy. The Bacon was really thick, and the Waffle with fresh cream and fresh berries was gone in seconds. If you have plenty of time on your hands... dine in. If not? Get it to-go!

This place has the best breakfast in San Antonio and is not to be missed!

by bfly01

Even though it is a bit tricky to get to, this place has so much history in one place and the food was wonderful. The service went well beyond expectations and the prices where reasonable. Week days are just as busy as the weekend, so go early, before 9:am. We will be back!

Pros: Wonderful food and service

Cons: hard to find

For great home cooking, beats Cracker Barrel any day!

by dellis129

Upon arrival we were told it might be a 35 minute wait. We went upstairs to walk around the "museum". There are only a few rooms available for viewing but it is a nice time-slice of the early 1900's. We only waited about 15 minutes before be seated. We ate breakfast in the kitchen area. It was very homey and warm. The biscuits are HUGE! The rest of the food was excellent and in large portions. The service was timely and unobtrusive. This a great place to have breakfast on a Satuday or Sunday morning. The lunch menu looks just as invitin and we plan to come back soon to try it out.

Pros: Excellent food, Service, Value for the $$$

Cons: Museum

Lousy service

by alamocitygal

The food is good but the service has alot to be desired..............don't go there if you only have an hour for lunch, you'll be cuttin' it real close! The atmosphere is nice but too small, too crowded.

Pros: Great food

Cons: Service is SLOW!

Delicious food in a chaming setting

by beefalo

Eating at the Guenther House is like stepping into another time and place! The grounds are well-manicured and landscaped and the inside is equally pretty. Be sure to explore upstairs and stop in at the gift shop.

As for the food, the menu is small but you're sure to find something to satisfy. Big biscuits and gravy, waffles mounded with fruit and cream, stacks of buttery pancakes, stuffed breakfast burritos - there's something for everyone!

Pros: Quaint ambience & alluring bakery display

Cons: Gets very busy

Good, but not as good as it used to be

by averagejoe123

This place is now so over run with tourists. The quality and character have suffered as a result. You won't bad food, just unremarkable food and you'll be hustled right through eveything

Pros: Too Crowded

Cons: Too Crowded

Breakfast all day long, great biscuits

by ddrewa

Awesome biscuits and gravy served all day long. The Champagne Chicken Enchiladas are very, very good and include a salad that is also quite tasty. Above average service, although you'll probably have to wait a while on the weekends. Nice location (outdoor dining is the best) along a quite non-touristy section of the San Antonio River.

Pros: Nice outdoor dining area, great biscuits

Cons: Busy on weekends

Very relaxing.

by punkprincess_2002

The best thing about this restaurant is definately the location. It is very charming and a nice place to relax. The food is pretty good, the complimentary cornbread is very tasty, and the bakery items are just wonderful. We will definately come back here next time we visit San Antonio.

If you like to spend money....

by pixiepinkie

I always enjoy eating here if for no reason other than the ambiance. The prices are high and the food is only alright. Except for their bakery items--the lemon bars are the best ever!

Wow! Wonderful!

by suerte1113

After reading the other reviews (negative ones) I was very surprised. I guess the 5 times I've been so far, I've been lucky! I've never had weak coffee, the food has always been out of this world. The staff has always been friendly, and the wait is easy to pass in the gift shop, or watching the ducks in the river. This is a place you go to take your time, enjoy the history and the food. Any restaurant is going to be a trying experience on holidays or weekends. If you like unique restaurants this is your place. If you're the part of society that doesn't like to wait, go to Denny's or Jim's. I know I'll continue taking all my visiting friends and family members to my favorite breakfast spot, Guenther House!

Pros: Food/Coffee, Scenery, Friendly Staff

Ugh! This was highly recommended but why!!!??!!

by altaramc

We had a table in the tea room-horribly noisy-lots of kithen noise-I might as well have actually been IN the kitchen-lots of slamming around of dishes, etc. The room has a tile floor and high ceilings and they've done nothing to try to dampen the noise. The food was okay but not worth the 45 minute wait for a table-and then a 45 minute wait for the food. Not a very good selection of items on the breakfast menu-I came expecting brunch-brunch here is just a breakfast menu-NOT A BUFFET. Almost worst of all-weak coffee. The only redeeming feature was the staff-very nice! Go see the house-but skip eating here!

Pros: Inexpensive, Courteous staff, good bakery items

Cons: takes too long, bad coffee, no buffet

An OK experience

by kelykel

I visited for lunch on Easter Sunday. The rolls ARE out of this world, but the service was lacking. When asked if they still served Mimosa's our server just laughed! Salad plates were not cleared when the main course was served, the server actually just pushed it to the side with the new plate! There was nothing special to comment about other than the bread items. It is a very nice setting and has promise as a fine tea house by day and romantic evening spot, but it isn't capitalized on. Servers in t-shirts and meals 'called out' so you have to stop conversation and raise your hand to get your food didn't create a genial seting for such a beautiful place.
FYI: there is no where to sit while waiting for a table, folks on walkers have a hard time

Pros: Nice setting

Cons: average food, casual waitstaff

Tourist Trap

by cstrapple

The location is very pretty but that is the only positive comment I have. The speciality were pancakes and waffles and I recommend IHOP - "maple" syrup was extra (go figure) and the "strong" coffee was like dishwater. We were very dissapointed and left hungry.

Pros: Charming House

Cons: , Wait, Food

Outdoor Dining

by heclac

I've eaten at Guenther's several times. The outdoor dining experience is not that great. It's very hot (even with cool mists) during the day and there is not much of a view!

Pros: pretty good food, moderate prices, on river for walks

Cons: Crowded place+parkg, long waiting period, negligent service

Best pumpkin pancakes in town

by dinah35

Although The Guenther House is located close to downtown on the grounds of the old Pioneer mill, it is situated in a quiet, grassy nook overlooking the river. The patio, lined with colorful pots of flowers, is comfortabe year 'round, compliments of a mister in the hottest weather. Breakfast lovers will find their favorites coookd to perfection, and will also find some new dishes to try. Upstairs in the gift shop one can find cook books, cooking paraphenalia, and those great Pioneer mixes.

San Antonio's best kept secret

by Dayna_K

The Guenther House is one of San Antonio's best kept secrets. This is a wonderful place for friends to meet for breakfast & a great place for Mothers Day. There is a wonderful little shop up stairs to walk through while your waiting. The house coffee is one of my favorites

Go here for the best rolls, biscuits and of course the blueberry waffles. Eat outside if you can. Value and quality. Only thing I didn't like was the Mexican entrees, but hey!! this is one neat place.

Pros: romantic, quiet, value

THIS is the one I'd recommend!

by Vagabond

Since we moved to San Antonio a year ago, we have been sampleing a different resturant for breakfast each weekend. This is my favorite so far!
The atmosphere--in the home of the German mill owner, or on the patio, can't be beat. After a meal of wonderful bisquits and gravy or fluffy pancakes, a walk down King William Street on an autumn morning--past the old houses and under the tall trees is a rare delight. Enjoy!

Pros: great food, lovely patio, shop upstairs

Cons: none

There's a reason it's so crowded!

by kateketner

Although wrangling a table can be a bit stressful, once your food comes it'll all quickly melt away. The Guenther house, with a flour mill just next door, makes the most scrumptious baked goods. The pancakes, waffles and biscuits with gravy are all old-time favorites served in Texas-sized portions. If you don't mind waiting a little for superior quality, this is the place for you!

Historically quaint on the Famous San Antonio River. Delicious baked goods like you've never tasted made with their own Pioneer Flour right from their own mills on site. Served right in the original home and garden. Totally Unique!!!

Pros: Tour of Home
