This is a great Japanese Restautant. By far, the best sushi and sashimi on the northside of Houston. My husband and I love to eat at the sushi bar. The owners are very friendly. I would recommend this restautant to others.

Matsu is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants on the North side of town. The food is very authentic and the sushi chef is actually Japanese. Very fresh sushi and excellent tempura. Nice, quaint establishment with a great wait staff.

Matsu Japanese Restaurant is a treat. It guarantees freshness and best tasting Japanese cuisine and Sushi in Houston. Warm Sake goes perfectly with dinner.

We needed a new sushi place because we moved and found Matsu. This is, by far, the best sushi restaurant I have ever been to (in North Houston). We have tried others and none have been able to compete. The employees are very nice and accommodating. I may not have had sushi in Japan or am a huge connoisseur of sushi but I DO know the basics of quality sushi/sashimi. I have a friend who actually has had sushi in Japan and he definitely recommends this place. It is ALWAYS fresh and made with care. Very good portions and no sloppy rolls here. You can tell they get a lot of regulars too, the staff know their customers by name when they walk in the door. The service can be a little slow when they are busy but it's well worth the wait. The prices are great, especially during Happy Hour. $3.95 for a roll and $1.50 for Nigiri. Spicy Tuna roll - very good. Happy Hour beer is cheaper than iced tea!! My husband loves that! Dessert wise - you must try the coconut creme brulee, its wonderful. I always want to go there!
I was visiting Houston from Los Angeles where we have fabulous sushi which puts most sushi in other cities in the USA to shame. I have also lived in Japan and had the real thing. Matsu is very good. The prices are incredibly low for the quality of fish and amount of food. basil4prez said it was high - the sashimi lunch box is 9.95, nice sashimi, tempura, rice, salad, soup, fruit etc. I had my 22 month old son with me and they were very accommodating, he wasn't in a good mood when we got there but by the time we left he was full and happy - he didn't have any raw fish but they brought me miso soup with extra tofu - he gobbled it up.
The service was fine. If you are in a hurry eat at the bar not a table - that is the way to go - if you want a relaxing time, good fresh food and acceptable table service eat at a table.
basil4prez may not know what they are talking about.
Pros: fresh, good lunch prices, great table layout for sound and privacy
I eat at Matsu about twice a month. It is my favorite place for sushi. I am a sushi novice and so I like the New York Roll and California Roll the best. My daughter and I always get fried ice cream, as it is the perfect treat. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is relaxing and very clean.
We have been to many, many Sushi restaraunts, and have found that Matsu is right up there with the best. Everything is fresh and well prepared, the chefs are friendly and creative. The Sashimi is great and we loved the Bungee Roll.
I've visited Matsu only once, but found it to be just average. I found their Spider and Caterpillar rolls to be of small proportion and unexciting. Thinking I had ordered poorly. I motioned for the waitress, who seemed uninterested in a tip, and started ordering signature rolls off of a separate menu (rocket and coco roll).
I found the rocket roll was a bit more to my liking, but the coco roll recommended by my waitress was not. If I remember correctly the coco roll as a tuna roll that was dipped in tempura mix and then deep fried. I found the outside of the roll crispy and yet underdone at the same time. The fish inside was warm and raw.
I would not recommend this restaurant to the 1st-time sushi patron, unless they are looking for a confusing lackluster sushi experience which will almost certainly end in sticker shock.
Pros: professional Chef's, Fresh Fish
Cons: Over Priced, Small Portains, Lazy Waitstaff
great quality good portions friendly and fun iy is not cheap
The food is always very fresh. The service is excellent and the sushi is the freshest in Houston...wouldn't go anywhere else, have been there, done that...their the best!!!!!
Matsu has the best sushi we've ever had. The service is good, the atmosphere is fine, the price is a bit high, but it's all about the sushi for us, and theirs is excellent - fresh, and generously portioned, we haven't found anybody who can beat it in Houston. When you want top notch sushi, this is the place.
Pros: Fresh, Clean, Generous Portions
We eat there about every two weeks since we have found it to be consistently very good.
Staff is amusing, efficient, and friendly.
Sashimi always fresh and excellent.
Excellent food, service is OK, overall good, bar seating area is nice with a group of friends and back room is great for a loud group
this is the greatest sushi bar that i ever have.
Pros: good food, good service, good price
