Great ambiance!

by Geoff G. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 671

Great place to take out of towners to show them some Texas history as well as an enjoyable dining experience. Although the food is very good, I've found the steak, at times, to lack flavoring that I've noticed at other higher end restaurants. Overall a great place to dine. Great service.

Seinfeld's Soup Nazi, selling steaks?

by Genie B.

Four of us went to Taste of Texas as a treat to celebrate my raise. We chose Taste of Texas for the quality of food we remembered from a previous visit. Last night, 1/10/09, was not a treat. There was a male employee at the front door, I'm not sure if he was a host or a manager, but he dampened what could have been a nice evening. We waited for a table without complaint for an hour and then saw the number after ours go up on the digital board. We thought we might have missed our number and headed to the hostess stand. He acted as if we would be thrown out if we asked any questions about the numbers. I would say you could equate him to the "Soup Nazi" from the old Jerry Seinfeld show. Do not ask any questions or "No Steak For You!". The salad bar was great, the steaks were not. We all decided that we would not spend $40 each for a steak that was mediocre at best and a poor management attitude. As the host to my company's overseas guests, I will not take any of them or recommend Taste of Texas to them as a result of this bad experience.

Mailing List Regrets

by Teri L. | insider Insider | Rank: 14,200

I went to this restaurant one time and one time only back in 2004. I accidentally somehow signed up for a newsletter, that I get a few times a year. I've called and e-mailed and everything else but they just won't remove me from their mailing list.

I thought the place was loud and busy. It seemed to take forever to get seated and then served. There's better places to go.

I feel sorry for all the trees that are wasted just so they can send me their stupid newsletter.

Great Food

by Gabriella G. | insider Insider | Rank: 30,419

The food, the service, the atmosphere is very very good. The salad bar gets a little crowded, but the wait is well worth the array of choices from salads, cheeses, and my favorite, breads. The waitstaff was polite, very helpful with selection choices, and very attentive. Worth the price.

Texas Landmark

by Cuong T. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,260

This is simply the best steak in town. I love the food here and the restaurant has a great atmosphere to eat in. If the steak doesn't impress you (which I doubt will happen), then the salad bar has to. This place is one of the best places for salads. They have a very courteous staff and incredible food, what more can you ask for? Well, they let you tour the place and many schools have field trips here because they consider it a landmark. This is the stop you should not miss out on.

Best Steak in Texas!

by Tam L. | insider Insider | Rank: 31,455

You haven't had real steak unless you've been to Taste of Texas! Not only does the decor and ambiance reflect everything that is Texan, but the proves to be more than worth the trip! With the choice to select your own piece of meat or have the cook choose, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu!

Excellent!

by Kathryn T. | insider Insider | Rank: 20,042

My family judges all steak dinners by the Taste of Texas dinners. You can even pick out your own steak if you so desire. The salad bar is first class; all ingredients are fresh; fill your own basket with biscuits, cornbread or rolls. Enjoy a roaring fire during cold weather, an assortment of Nutcrackers and other decorations during Christmas, and much ado about Texas history during any visit. Cap off your meal by enjoying cinnamon coffee as you relax after a fabulous meal.

Best in Texas

by Linda H. | insider Insider | Rank: 32,063

If you live in Houston or are just visiting, Taste of Texas is a must to try. They maintain a high standard to serve only the best steaks-angus beef. Waiters are very personable and attentive. The salad bar has a great variety of dressings. I love the honey butter and apple butter. They do not take reservations, so go early on weekends or better yet, go on a weeknight. Well worth your time and money!

PROS: Best tasting steak in town - can choose your own steak if you want.
CONS: Long wait on weekends and expensive, but worth it.

Great Restaurant

by oldflyfisherman

This is the best restaurant that we have been to in Texas and the California Bay area. Yes, it will be a little more expensive, but it is of the highest Quality. It is hard to cook an almost 2 inch ribeye perfectly and they did two for us. The crew was great and quick to serve. I judge a restaurant's cleanliness by how clean their restrooms are. TTR was one of the best in the cleanliness, which was also confirmed by the cleanliness of the kitchen when we selected our steaks.
Unfortunately, it is obvious that some people in these reviews are being negative about this restaurant because they do not agree with the politics of the owner, who has a morning talk show in Houston. Don't listen to those reviews. If you a want a great, family oriented, steakhouse experience, go to Taste of Texas and find out for yourself.

Pros: High quality food, fantastic service and very clean

Cons: none

Lifetime customer, but will NEVER return

by csfh

If I were rating the food, I would give it 4 stars; however, my latest experience was so bad that Taste of Texas has lost a lifetime customer.
Website says "family-friendly," but it is NOT. If small children are a problem, this term should not be used. Apparently loud obnoxious salesmen are not a problem, because the table next to us carried on as much as they wanted.

Pros: great steaks

Cons: rude, not family friendly

The angus steaks were cooked great!! I ordered the 16oz. ribeye with Texas Au Gratin Potatoes and green beans. Quality Food and huge quantity. They also have an awesome salad bar, very fresh. Overpriced for the quality but great Ambience, Certainly not a WINE BAR

by thebestcritic

Taste of Texas is below average based on the available steakhouses in Houston. Their strongest suit is the decor and overpriced wine list which carries some very nice labels, but at a premium price. Steaks are not on the level of Capital Grill, Pappas, Morton's, Ruth's, and etc. They rank somewhere between those mentioned and the Texas Land and Cattle, and Saltgrass quality. It is a great place to take foreign visitors for the ambience and "Texas" decor; during Christmas holidays they decorate beautifully. Side dishes are not comparible to the "upper end" steakhouses in Houston. A great salad bar with cheeses and wonderful breads. If you were to rank it on it's own without comparison to our "upper end" steakhouses, it would fair much better.

I can't belive TofT shows up as a wine bar. IT IS DEFINATELY NOT A WINE BAR!!!

Pros: Ambience, Texas Decor, Salad Bar

Cons: Overpriced, Outrageous wine prices, Long wait for tables

The Worse First Impression!!!!!!

by Tony210

I am not much of a complainer but this is by far the worse Steakhouse.

To make this review short and strait to the point; I went to Taste Of Texas Monday night with friends, and waited for 1 1/2hrs to get a table. When I ordered the Cowboy Steak (24oz Ribeye bone in) med-rare it came out med-well. For a $40 steak I expected great steak. I complained, and the second time around it came out RARE. I was very upset with the food, so I talked to the manager to put the steak in a to-go box since all my friends had already finished eating before I had a chance to enjoy my steak. He said he will give me compensation for the trouble, and I get a discount $25. I personally think a slab of steak from Chili?s for $15 bucks would be better. Spoke to the manager again to take the to go box and the cost of my steak off the bill, and I came home empty handed after driving and waiting for a disappointing steak.

Overall, management team needs to learn the importance of satisfied customers, and for a well known steakhouse I expected great steak.

Pros: atmosphere was great; waiters/ waitresses were great

Cons: Steak were bad; managers doesnt know how to satisfy a customer

Best little steakhouse in Texas

by joshandmonica

Taste of Texas is most definitely the best steakhouse I have ever been to! My husband's company Christmas dinner was held there this past Saturday. As soon as I heard where the dinner was to be held, I looked the restaurant up to read the reviews. There were several mixed reviews so I wasn't expecting to be totally wowed. It took a while for us to be seated (about an hour and a half), since they don't take reservations... not even for large parties; we had about 25 in our group. The restaurant was very tastefully decorated with Christmas decore. The fireplaces were lit and the atmosphere was very cozy and comfortable. Once we were seated, our waiter was obviously on top of things, as he took all of our drink orders and had them brought out very quickly. He was very attentive and was able to handle our large crowd with what looked like ease. The salad bar was small but held all that you would need to build your own salad to your liking. I ordered the Center Cut Filet (filet mignon) which was cooked to order and perfectly so; and I added a lobster tail to my meal for my own surf and turf meal. My husband and I shared the creme brule for dessert and it was wonderful as well! All was absolutely delicious! There was very little chatter at our table once the food arrived because everyone was so busy enjoying their delicious food! All 25 people in our group were totally satisfied with their meal as it was prepared and served. So 2 very enthusiastic thumbs up for Taste of Texas, the best little steakhouse in Texas!

Pros: Excellent food, friendly service, beautiful Christmas decorations

Cons: they don't take reservations, the long wait to be seated

excellent atmosphere

by agarza78264

well I unlike my husband ordinarily don't fancy steakhouses but this one has impressed me i am an avid cheese eater, I love the STUFF!!!! they have huge cheese blocks at the salad bar, so I definetly would recommend the salad bar. We did also try an appetizer we tried the jalapeno and cheese stuffed shrimp, they were delicous. My husband tried the new york steak and I ordered the hamburger. we shared each other's food his steak was extremely tender, it was magnificent! I was very pleased with the customer service from the staff. when we arrived we were told it would be a 15 min wait and just when i thought "oh your 15 mins are up" they called on us. I would reccomend this restaurant to anyone it's excellent

Pros: excellent atmosphere excellent service timely manner

Cons: didn't last quite long enough

warm and inviting atmosphere/best steaks in Houston

by houstongurl

I have never had a bad experience here. We dine out and entertain often. This place is great to take out of town guests if you want to show them a little bit of Texas. Its not overkill...but warm and inviting..like a nice upscale hunting lodge. Mounted wildlife, crackling fireplaces, fully bricked interior, and a wine cellar to die for. They offer fabulous, high grade meat...you can even pick out your own steak if you'd like. I don't ever stray from my favorite...the 6oz garlic butter filet. OMG...to die for..this is like cotton candy dancing in your mouth. Have it prepared medium rare. Steaks are prepared with 2 different seasoning options...lemon pepper...or garlic butter. YUM! Only downfall is there is always a wait and they won't seat you unless your entire party is present. My husband and I visit Taste on random nights just for a good steak.....birthdays...Mothers day...dining out with friends. We are regulars and have NEVER been disappointed. Also...its decorated beautifully at Christmas time.

Pros: great steak, salad bar, cinnamom butter, decor

Cons: always on a wait...thats to be expected at a place this good

Great Experience!

by Czcz

I've been going to the Taste of Texas (ToT) since 2004 and always felt they had great steaks. My wife had never been to ToT, therefore we decided to go for dinner to celebrate our anniversary. Throughout the years, I always talked a good game about this place, but became concerned when my wife mentioned the negative reviews on this website. Well......... we went on a Friday night and only waited 7 minutes to be seated. Our waiter, Jared, was phenomenal and constantly kept folding our napkins whenever we had to get up from the table. (Yeah, a little fu-fu for my taste, but made our night memorable) My wife was not disappointed with the salad bar and bread. My wife is an occasional steak eater, unlike myself, and felt her 10 oz filet was great. I had the 10 oz filet medium and felt it was cooked perfectly - tasty and tender. I'm in agree with another post that stated appetizers should be skipped. When we were done with our steaks, we barely had room for dessert - it took a great sacrifice to finish our special celebration dessert, which is always on the house if one is celebrating a special occasion. Needless to say, we were not disappointed with ToT and plan to return during the year. Warning to all, ToT is not one those especially fancy steak houses. The setting is EXTREMELY casual and their bathrooms are unique as they have several Houston sports memorabilia on display. All fu-fu diners should stay away because this is not a place that kisses your butt. If you're looking for great steaks in a friendly environment and good service, then this is the place to go!

Pros: Awesome salad bar, bread, and steaks. Great service

Cons: Pricey steaks, but comparable to most steakhouses.

Don't bother

by philipssweetpea

My husband had talked up Taste of Texas for months, but since it was a little beyond our newlywed budget, I did not have the chance to eat there until my sweet hubby splurged for my birthday. I was so excited, and eager to sample such a highly recomended restaurant. To make things festive, I dressed up in a formal dress, and hubby wore his tux, and we went out on the town. We were seated promptly, and the good service stopped there. We orderred the prime rib to split, because I wanted to save room for dessert, and I guess the waitress figured we would be a low tip tabe, and wandered away. I will say that th salad bar was very good, but I was not offered any ground pepper. The waitress took care of the table next to us, and passed by me, glancing at my salad, and then kept walking! When the food arrived, the prime rib was very good, but the hollandaise was just okay. Our water glasses sat empty for half of the meal, and although I was sitting with my back to the bar, my husband told me that he was watching our waitress hang out there eating maraschino cherries, and ignoring our empty plates. When she finaly came to clear the plates, she ungraciously offered dessert, adding "It's free on your birthday" we were planning on paying for it, but whatever. The deep dish pecan pie with cinnamon ice cream was very good, but had my hsband not known about the cinnamon coffee, I would not have gotten to try it! It was also good, but by the time she brought out everything, and a polaroid camera, it was hard to smile because of her abrupt attitude. It was as if taking our picture was a huge chore, and she wanted to get back to her cherries. The only time our waitress showed any friendliness, was when she brought back our credit card, and it was time to write in a tip. Hubby wrote a letter to the owner, but we never heard any sort of appology. Bad service is unpleasant and disappointing, but the lack of any response from the owner assured us that we will never return. What a shame.

Pros: very good food, the ladies bathroom is cute.

Cons: hard to enjoy the food when the waitstaff doesn't want you there.

Couldn't get in the Front Door

by sctexas

The owner of the Taste of Texas" has a 30.06 sign posted on the front door. This sign prevents law abiding customers who are licensed to carry a handgun concelaed from carrying in the place of business. It does not prevent criminals from carrying handguns in the place of business.

Therefore, No matter how good the food is, I will not spend my money at an anti gun rights restaurant. Especially when the owner has a concelaed handgun license himself and carries a handgun.

Sullivans, Pappas, Flemmings, and Vic and Anthony's don't have these signs.

Pros: Nice looking place form the outside

Cons: 30.06 sign posted on front door

AWESOME Steaks!!!!

by tx_rsr

I love this place. The steaks are AWESOME and the service is great. You can walk up to the butcher counter and choose your own steak.

Unfortunately, the average wait to get a table is just a little over an hour if you have 4 in your party. Anything over 4 and the wait increases by about 45 minutes to an hour. I have come to accept this as part of the dinning experice at the Taste of Texas so I don't go there often.

So, if you and your guest can live with the waiting time to sit down, I highly recommend it.

Pros: The Steaks are AWESOME!!!!

Cons: Takes for over an hour to get a table on a busy night

Too long of a wait for too tough of a steak

by gmalone

I'd heard about this place for years and finally had a chance to dine there with friends and was sorely disappointed. We were there on a Tuesday night and it was very crowded and loud. Cocktails were watered down and the service was chaotic (waiter was watching a movie on a child's laptop at a neighboring table). I ordered the porterhouse which was the toughest steak I'd had in years. I would have a very hard time recommending this to anyone and probably won't go back unless someone else who is paying the tab insists.

Pros: Good wine list.

Cons: No ambience, like dining at McDonalds.

No reservations and not TRUELY natural tender steak

by liss337

I use to be a big fan of this place.. I love the salad bar and soups and my husband loves the steak. The customer service is usually great except when i called to make reservations for 2 for 730 the hostess was like you dont need to make reservations then when i asked her "are you sure? is it normally slow?" she yeah its busy but you can come in and wait, and im like i just asked you to make reservations. shes like well were bz at that time but if you could come in around 5 that would be great. im sitting here thinking to myself i get off at 5 and on top of that that is 2.5 hrs earlier then i planned to eat then shes like well if not we close at 10 so come in around 930 and there is no wait. then finally shes like we dont take reservations for under 10. i even offered to put down a deposit to guarnteed that we would be coming. i know this place isnt romantic but geez give me a break. i told her dont worry about it. in all honestly there salad is great but there steaks are not that gooD. IF YOU GET IT ON THE SIZZLING PLATTER GET IT UN KNOTCH MORE RARE BC THE PLATE COOKS IT MORE. (TEHY FAIL TO TELL YOU THIS) ALSO I COULD MNEVER UNDERSTAND WHY THEYRE FOOD GAVE ME THE CRAPS UNTIL ONE DAY I ONLY ATE TEH SALAD.. TEH REASON BEING---THE PUT MEAT TENDERIZER IN THEIR STEAKS! SO THERE STEAKS ARE NOT NATURALLY TENDER. I AM ALLERGIC TO IT AND BREAK OUT IN HIVES AND ITS LIKE MY STOMAC IS DYING OF FOOD POISIONING BC OF IT BUT THEY DONT TELL YOU THEY PUT THAT IN THEIR FOOD ETIHER. THIS PLACE IS GREAT FOR VEGANS.. FOR THEIR SALAD BAR AND IF YOU HAVE A BIG PARTY, NOT GREAT IF FOR ONLY 2 PPL.

Pros: GREAT SALAD BAR

Cons: NO RESERVATIONS FOR COUPLES AND THEY PUT MEAT TNDERIZER IN THE STEAKS

Used to be good - now it's a rip-off living off of a formerly good name. Avoid.

by LarryBrown

More than $10 per drink is simply ridiculous. It took the guy about 12 minutes to make 2 margaritas and a pina colada-that's inexcusable. That ice shaving machine you've got is silly, slow, and loud, especially since bartender is inept. My wife complained that her drink tasted like ice water, but when she saw the look of disgust in my eyes when I thought of going to get the drink remade and missing another ten minutes of my birthday party, she backed off. Mumzy complained that her pina colada had no liquor, and my margarita was bland and had no liquor.

Mumzy had the filet on the sizzling platter. It did not come sizzling, which is a pet peeve; however Mumzy reported that she liked the steak. Mumzy reports that her asparagus was cold and not good.

Alicia and I had the medium well porterhouse for two with portabella and scalloped potatoes. The steak was inedible. Neither one of us liked it. It was full of fat and inedible nerve that we had to cough out, and we had to send it back for raw disgusting bleeding on our plate, which makes Alicia nauseas. There's no excuse for serving a bleeding steak that was ordered medium well. And at over $60? This steak was not tender, it had no seasoning, mine tasted like water and I had to ask for A?1 sauce to cover the objectionable flavor so that I could eat it. The portabella mushroom was inedible, tasted like water, and did not have a char-grilled flavor like the wonderful one at Cheesecake Factory. I said the scalloped potatoes were inedible, Alicia said they tasted raw. Neither of us ate them. Someone else also complained that the potatoes were raw.

Jimmy said that your variety of steaks was too limited for a steakhouse and that ?Texas Land & Cattle? has a better selection, is much better than you, and is an infinitely better value. Also note that the Margaritas at ?Texas Land & Cattle? are the best, and strongest, we've ever had. Susan had the stuffed shrimp. She didn't like them.

Pros: Beautiful, impressive place, museum decor.

Cons: Waaaaay overpriced, lousy, slow, inedible.

Yet to be disappointed.

by cpede

We first tried Taste of Texas when a friend from out of state visited and wanted to go. We were pleasantly surprsied then, and have been thoroughly pleased ever since. Being a meat eater, and a huge fan of steak, I won't settle for the run-of-the-mill (fill in your own chain steak house here) steak. The steak is phenomenal, and the rest of it is great (but you really go for the meat). It is expensive but well worth it. The desserts are awesome too; but with hardly enough room left over after our meal, we usually take it home for later. (just a note: you get one free desert if you are celebrating a birthday...including a polaroid of the birthday person)
The wait staff, hostesses and servers are always cordial, even when busy...and that's just about every night. There's no doubt that this is a great place to eat given that the line is pretty much always out the door. They provide free munchies (chips, popcorn) and drinks (sodas, tea, and water), though, while you wait. The best time to go is before 6:30 or after 8:30/9. They do not accept reservations, and usually won't let you take a number until your entire party is in the restaurant. We recommend this to all of our carnivorous friends, and will continue to be faithful patrons for many years to come.

DO NOT GO AFTER 9 BETTER YET EVER THE CS IS TERRIBLE

by thefoodanddrinklover

I have been to this restaurant before and had a fairly decent experience, this last time I do not know what happened. The service was good and the waitress was really attentive, however I have had better FRESHER food at a steak house. The lobster sucked, was over cooked and had a nasty charbroil taste to it. The steak was full of fat and not cooked properly. Lets not talk about the stuff they try to pass off as butter (think heart attack to-go) it wasn't melted and didn't melt with a little help. Basically what seemed to had happened was someone ordered the same steak and lobster (earlier that day) and they did not want to get rid of it.
Taste of Texas, if you are going to charge someone $70 for ONE meal could you at least make it a decent one. I called to speak with the managers (we took the meal to-go) and to no avail I received no call back what so ever--I'm still waiting by the way. I have always heard the expression you get what you pay for--this was no cheap meal. They have lost a customer because of the poor manner that it was handled. I guess that is what you get from a place that you pay $125 for two meals in one sitting. I will make sure I tell everybody that asks me about this place NOT TO GO.

Pros: The waitress was very attentative

Cons: The customer service is not good, the food is expensive and prepared good.

Big disappointment!

by NYC_Brunchers

I'd been wanting to try this place, but am so sorry that I did. The experience begins with a nightmare of a parking lot. It took my husband 20 minutes to find a spot. The worst part, though, is the food...it is flat, boring and completely without flavor. The salad bar is tiny and uninteresting, the prime rib thin and leathery, and the sides completely tasteless. Even the cheescake tasted frozen. For the same price I'd go to any of the other fine steakhouses in town, Pappas Bros., The Striphouse, or even Smith and Wollensky. One mildy redeeming thing was the wine. We had a nice reasonably priced cabernet that we enjoyed. #36, I believe. The service was also slow and borderline rude. After an hour wait, we were shown to our table and I asked for a highchair to put my infant seat on. The hostess chastised me and refused to give me one saying it would tip over and pushing two chairs together was safer for the baby--fine if that's their policy, but don't comment on my parenting choices please. There was a much nicer way to approach this. Overall a bad experience we won't be paying for again!

Pros: Nice wine list

Cons: Awful food, way too expensive for the quality

Amazing steaks without the pretense

by vivacleo

I hate getting dressed up to eat but I love excellent food. Taste of Texas is the answer to this dilemma. It's so good, I stopped swearing off red meat. The prime rib is divine. DIVINE. It's perfectly roasted, tender, juicy, and melts like butter in my mouth. I don't understand how people order an appetizer, with a salad bar and bread bar, it's enough to almost make me full. I can never finish the side item that comes with the meal. I've only been here twice but it's been consistently good. I waited an hour (in their convenient waiting room) without complaining because I was more than happy to waiting longer for the taste of perfect steak.

Pros: Fantastic food, nice waiting area with snacks,

Cons: Parking during busy times,

awesome beef

by desdup

My friends and I love a great steak and we have been here a couple a times and it was good I was not all together please with the wait to be seated and we had a reservation for a birthday. the service is good once we got to our seats. I think for the price you pay that when you take the time to make a reservation you get seated when you get there not 25 min and they could make the bar more accessible for those people that are waiting or have a waitress help with taking orders

Pros: The cuts of the meat was good the price

Cons: The wait time is awful

Great value

by dbahry

This restaurant is a great value for the money. You can even choose your own steak from the display case by the salad bar.

good food but pretty pricey

by tx07

I went here because I got a gift certificate- I wanted to try it because I had never been here. Walking it, it was a bit surreal- I have never seen so many people waiting in one place. That said, there is a great waiting area with snacks and drinks, and the numbers go up on a screen so they are not constantly yelling out people's names. We had to wait, but they have a nice bar area and we were actually seated before we were supposed to be, so that was nice. The salad bar was fun- probably my favorite part of the menu. Our steaks were pretty good, but priced exactly the same as the steakhouses downtown, which I thought was a little excessive. I enjoyed my meal, but I wouldn't pay that kind of money without the gift certificate at this place- I would go to one of the many many other excellent steakhouses in town. If you have someone in from out of town and want to show them something very "Texas" I would say this would be a good place to go .

Pros: pretty good food

Cons: price too much for this food

Great food, but crowded.

by krazyray

The food here is wonderful! We went early on a Friday night, so there was no wait. It did get crowded, and loud. I didn't mind because the food was so good. The salad bar is great, and the mozzerella bread--to die for! Didn't get around to dessert, but they looked good. Maybe next time!

You get what you came for

by beliue2

Anyone that wants to complain about a wait at the Taste of Texas, go to another steak house then and let me have your table!! The wait is long because the steaks are exquisite and everyone loves them. Nothing can compare to their filets, bacon wrapped with some garlic butter, its well worth the wait. Some people complain that their chicken dishes are sub par but guess what its a steakhouse, why go to a steak house for chicken! I would suggest sitting in the bar area, I always am well taken care of in the bar and the bartenders are always very helpful.

Pros: Bar area, steak add ons

Cons: service, hostesses

yihah

by vonderfehr

Salad bar is great. Not too big, but great variety, a cheese block, fresh breads etc. Very much a "Big Texas" kind of place. "Yihah" and red scarf is compulsory for new guests.. a unique gesture to welcome the guests..

Pros: salad bar, service, bread

Cons: expensive

by urbanz

I dont know what the Californian is whining about. This place has one of the best steaks anyewhere in the country. It does take time to get in, if the food was so bad, I dont this the line would be so long, it isnt like Bruce Willis is in there with a harmonica, its good food, thats why people go...

Pros: Steak, Steak, Steak

Cons: Wait time

Completely Over Rated

by nwt88

i was visiting from northern california and wanted to get the authentic texas experience. service was absolutely horrible here! basically, had to wait for an hour before seating. then, the hostess made us wait another 15 minutes after our number was called because she was busy chit chatting with her colleagues. After we were seated, the waiters had to "change over responsibility" for some reason and we had to go through the entire order again.

from a food persepctive, the salad bar reminded me of sizzler. completely self serve and frankly very cheap. the steak was below average at best. i asked for medium and it came well done and extremely dry. the garlic butter had no flavor and my spinach side order was essentially tasteless. the only thing foodwise that was good was the bread, which i could have gotten at "sweet tomato" or "fresh choice".

Pros: bread

Cons: service, steak, salad bar

Great quality steak

by christine_munoz

I personally LOVE this place. Very good quality steaks...even well done is tender. Salad bar is WONDERFUL. Not too big, but great variety, a cheese block, fresh breads, homemade butters, etc. Very much a "Big Texas" kind of place. Not dainty and prissy. Great tasting side items, yummy desserts, and just a fun (and loud) atmosphere. Not for a romantic quiet date. Waiting area has sodas, tea, chips & salsa, and fresh popped popcorn...for free! My first time I ate here I waited almost 1.5 hours....and it was worth it. That was with only 2 people though, so be prepared to wait, especially if you have a larger party. Service is good to average, but I have had my one or two "less focused" waiters. Once had to return a steak TWICE in the same night, but the 3rd time was a charm. The manager was apologetic and compensated us.

Pros: quality steak, free snacks w/wait, big texas feel

Cons: wait time

Not bad, but not great

by jbsmuss

As many people have said, make sure to be watching for your number or else you will not get seated. The salad bar was nice, and my steak was really good. The atmosphere is very much like Saltgrass, as was the meal. I would say that it is a good place to eat, but for the price I would much prefer other steakhouses in Houston. I dont like the fact that you cant make a reservation for small parties.

Hmm.. Mixed reviews from me.

by soadnirvana

My mom really should have complained on Mother's Day after sitting for close to two hours in line, after her spinach stuffed chicken was "disgusting". She refused because she didnt' want to ruin the reputation of this classy restaurant. Its self evident that they take pride in their food and service, but that chicken did taste terrible. I had the prime rib and thoroughly enjoyed it. I love this place, the cheese and bread bar rocks! I just felt bad for my mom not being able to enjoy her dinner.

Pros: Prime Rib, Cheese bar

Cons: Too pricey, Nasty Chicken

Whats the hype

I'm confused? Someone recommended this restaurant to me, and when I got their excited for a good meal, I was dissapointed. What was supposed to be a nice steakhouse, I felt like I was at steak-n-ale.

Rude Management

by jodoe

During our visit we were eating and also feeding my 6-month old niece. In the middle of feeding her we were asked if we would take her to a section next to the bar because she was being too loud, "but not to worry because there is air conditioning over there." We had a few problems with that: 1. The manager was extremely rude and condescending, 2. That section of the restaurant is a next to the smoking section, 3. Any noise she was making was drowned out by the table next to us yelling "hee haw". We tried to talk to another manager and he responded with, I have kids, and they don't act like that. We're through with Taste of Texas, their arrogant management, and their self-righteous ownership. Their food is decent, but is comparable to any other restaurant in Houston.

Best steak and lobster in town

by sasha70

Perfect service and always has been. Sometimes you may have to wait, but who cares? The give you snacks and drinks in their extremely comfortable and huge waiting area. This place is 1st class the whole way. I've never had a bad meal here. I love the filet w/lobster upside. (The lobster here is better that at those place "specializing" in lobster!

underperforming

by txluver

I had heard many good things about the Taste of Texas before going so I had high hopes. They did not deliver. The "no reservation" policy is an excellent way to get people to dump money into your bar before they dump even more at the table. Although the wait staff was very polite, they weren't very knowledgeable or helpful. The hostess and management seemed very all aloof and didn't seem to care whether we were there or not. The salad bar was good, but how hard is it to screw up a salad bar. The steaks came out over done, the vegetables were cold. All in all, not a very good experience. There are so many better steak restaurants in Houston to have to go back to this place.

Pros: A lot of hype

Cons: , Bad food, Overpriced
