I will not return to this restaurant. I took my son Saturday evening, celebrating his 15th birthday. We are used to waiting 1 1/2- 2 hrs. for a table as we did Saturday evening. Once we were seated we placed our orders. I ordered my steak and told the waiter- please extra well and went on to tell him- we have been here before and most times I have to return my steak because there is red when I cut into it, so please ask them to grill it extra well. Of course was his response. Our meal arrives, my son's steak was fine, I cut into my steak and red blood spills out. Really? I asked the waiter to please throw it back on the grill. As I wait..........and wait.......25 minutes later, my son is completely finished eating his meal, here comes my steak. So....we wait almost 2 hours to be seated, so my son can eat his meal ALONE, and then I can eat my steak a half hour later. I asked the waiter to take it away, I have lost my appetite. A manager comes over and offers me his card, so I can look for him next time we come so we don't have this problem again- are you kidding me? I should come here again...place my order...then try to find this idiot and tell him to see to it they cook my steak the way I ordered it. I don't want this jerk's card. And I agree with another review about the guy at the front- dark hair, thinks he is Mr. Buff in his suit- he was as rude as heck to me when I asked what number they were up to. What a POS to have at the front door greeting patrons. Adidos Taste of Texas- you have left a bad taste in my mouth.

Great place to take out of towners to show them some Texas history as well as an enjoyable dining experience. Although the food is very good, I've found the steak, at times, to lack flavoring that I've noticed at other higher end restaurants. Overall a great place to dine. Great service.

Taste of Texas is one of our favorite eating establishments in Houston PERIOD! We love the salad bar and the food is always perfect. The staff is amazing. The prices are steep, but we go prepared. We love to give TOT gift cards during the holidays too.

Four of us went to Taste of Texas as a treat to celebrate my raise. We chose Taste of Texas for the quality of food we remembered from a previous visit. Last night, 1/10/09, was not a treat. There was a male employee at the front door, I'm not sure if he was a host or a manager, but he dampened what could have been a nice evening. We waited for a table without complaint for an hour and then saw the number after ours go up on the digital board. We thought we might have missed our number and headed to the hostess stand. He acted as if we would be thrown out if we asked any questions about the numbers. I would say you could equate him to the "Soup Nazi" from the old Jerry Seinfeld show. Do not ask any questions or "No Steak For You!". The salad bar was great, the steaks were not. We all decided that we would not spend $40 each for a steak that was mediocre at best and a poor management attitude. As the host to my company's overseas guests, I will not take any of them or recommend Taste of Texas to them as a result of this bad experience.

The worst dining experience of my life was at A Taste of Texas. I am just married and also look very young so when I walked in and said I had a reservation they laughed at me. Finally after 30 minutes we were seated (30 minutes after our reservation time). We witnessed almost 10 people with reservations like us get seated before us. Finally after we were seated the waiter stopped over and we mentioned we would like to see a manager to complain about our slow seating. Well this guy named Bubba walked to our table and said he was the manager. We started telling him the story and he would not stop interrupting us. When we finally finished talking to my astonishment Bubba started hitting on my wife! He even told her if she ever needed anything to let him know and then winked. After that we stood up and walked out and want to Pappas where I had the best steak of my life.

LOVE T.o.Tx. My favorite steakhouse in Houston. The meat is always super juicy and cooked to perfection! I cut my Filet with a fork last time! Waiters really know the menu and can help you decide on adders for your steaks. Sides and desserts are excellent as well. They will ask if you are celebrating anything special, if you are, free dessert and a picture.\r\nI've eaten all over Houston and haven't found a better steak at any price. Worth it!!

No notice that they were closed on Labor Day, the only weekday my husband has off during most weeks. Showed up to find a hand written sign on the door saying ""come back later"" denoting the change of hours. Different hours not on website or on phone recording. Went to OLIVE GARDEN and had a great meal!! Sent them an email questioning this procedure and heard nothing back. We have been going to ToT for many years. We have always liked it and felt it to be worth the money. Not so much now. Steak prices are over the top and we probably won't go back for a while. Too bad because I do like the owners... just not worth the hassle. Sometimes places just get too fond of themselves and don't care about consequences. I do see this here.

My troubles started with TOT when I made my reservation, I was put on Ignored when I tried to make a reservation for 20, most restaurants would jump to get a big party in but not TOT, I had to hang up and call back and ask for a manager who apoligized and assured me that is not how they do business. The day of my dinner party with Clients, we were stuck in a waiting area even though more then 60% of our guests were there, then when 99% of my guest arrived we were still made to wait as they seated a party of 2, reservation was for six we were escorted to our table at 6:20, once we were moved to our table which was in the fire escape hall way, the area was quite but rather warm and when asked to turn down the air I was given attitude and lied to, we ate dinner in a tight area with 20 bodies warming up the place, a manager never came over to greet us, most my guest enjoyed the food, I had the grilled shrimp, was a little over cooked. Next day called to express my experience to the manager, the buck was passed to the night manager, was told I would get a call back, that never happened, guess dropping over 1K for dinner don't get you much these days. I know my next big dinner party will NOT be at Taste of Texas.

So, I just got back from Taste of Texas and I probably go there 3-4 times a year. However, this time, I had the worst experience ever! When you wait for 2.5 hours for a steak, you expect it to be cooked the way you order it and to taste good. Unfortunately, my medium-rare steak came out as medium-well and kinda tough so I told the waiter and at first, they offered to take the ribeye back and bring me prime rib because that would be ready quicker and my family had already got their food and were half-way through their meal. I told him that I did not want a prime rib, I ordered a ribeye and I've waited for 2.5 hours for this ribeye and paid $40 for it so I expect a perfect steak.\n\nA couple minutes later the waiter came back and apologized for the way they cooked the steak and offered to buy me desert...I told him that I wanted him to comp the steak because of the inconvenience and he told me that he would let the manager know. Soon enough, the manager Norm came over. They took my steak an told me they'd bring out another one. About 20 minutes later, my steak came out and it was cooked medium-rare; however, the company I was with had already finished their dinner and I had lost my appetite from arguing with Norm. Norm then came back over when I got my new steak to see whether I was happy with it and offer me cake again. I reiterated that I wasn't here for the cake, that I waited 2.5 hours outside in the Houston heat and humidity for my steak, that they've raised the prices of their steaks and I would have gladly paid for a steak that came out to my liking but it didn't, that I was upset and that his actions had ruined the occasion that I had been there to celebrate, and that I expected him to comp my steak. He said if I didn't want it anymore, he would take it back. He then offered me cake again and we then nearly got into a heated argument in the crowded restaurant with he telling me that he was absolutely NOT going to comp my steak. I finally told him to leave the table and that if he wasn't going to comp it, I didn't want him there any longer.\n\nHe left the table and my steak sat in front of me basically untouched until the bill came. When the waiter asked if I wanted the steak boxed, I asked him whether Norm had agreed to comp the steak. When the waiter replied ""no"", I told him that if Norm is going to comp it, then I'll pay for it and take it home but if he wasn't going to, I don't want the steak anymore. The waiter came back and told me that the steak had been removed from the bill, yet Norm still kept the steak and probably threw it away (hopefully they didn't re-serve it).\n\nThe way I see it, Norm had 3 options: (1) he could have comped the steak and allowed me to take it with me or eat it so that at least I would have been compensated for my inconvenience, (2) he could have provided me with a gift certificate to induce me to come back to this restaurant and to prove to me that they're better than what happened tonight, or (3) he could have refused to comp the steak and stick to his guns, thus making me pay for the steak and take the steak home with me. Instead, he chose the worst option, option (4) - this option entailed throwing away 2 steaks (the first one that was cooked improperly and the second one that he refused to both comp and let me take home).\n\nBy his actions, he not only threw away two steaks, but didn't get paid for either one of them, has lost myself and my family as customers forever including everyone that I tell about this horrible experience (we used to be loyal customers), and has caused me to write this review, along with others. This guy Norm doesn't know customer service from the back of his hand and I would not be surprised if the owners of the restaurant let him go - in fact, I hope that they do for the sake of their restaurant.

I have been a patron of The Taste of Texas for about 15 years. In all of my many visits(from Beaumont.......worth the drive over!!!), I have never been disappointed! You will not find a better steak. The salad bar is always so fresh and the breads are delicious. Expect a wait on weekends but it is well worth it.

We've been there twice. Both times with guests from Europe.\r\nFirst time we had a really great waiter who was very attentive and helpful and chose great steaks for us.\r\nWe got red bandanas when he discovered that we went there for a first time.\r\nThe second time we went there waiter was less attentive and he chose worse meat.\r\nThe salad bar is incredibly rich:)\r\nThey have the best creme brulee in Houston - really superb! All the desserts look wonderful.\r\nMy only complaint is that you cannot book a table. You just come and put yourself on a list, get a number and wait for a table. So you can't be very hungry cause the waiting time for the table was usually around 40 minutes...Well, they have a nice waiting area with drinks and popcorn but there's no use in eating popcorn before a meal.\r\nDefinitely it's a great place to take people visiting Texas for the first time.

I love this concept! The food was amazing, I really have never had anything like it before.

I have had the pleasure of dining at TASTE of TEXAS\r\nfor about 35 years. Taste of Texas is where I always take my family and friends to celebrate or when my wife and I want to relaxe and have a great steak.\r\n\r\nJames Whitener

I have had the pleasure of going to many steakhouses throughout the country, and this is by far the best. It is a combination of the phenomenal steak, the value and the service. You will not find a better steakhouse in Texas or outside of it.

Came here for lunch and sampled the restaurant's lunch menu. The service was fantastic and the food was surprisingly flavorful. I really enjoyed looking at all of the Texas history adorning the entire place. Great place to take anyone visiting. Definitely go for the salad bar - well worth the money.

I have been to taste of texas only once but during my visit, I was well impressed by their amazing steak and service. I am originally from New York and it was wonderful to try delicious food from Texas. The only con is the price but it is well worth it! I recommend taking your family for a nice dinner here!

The salad bar has been revamped but still lacks much. It offers mostly the basics while charging almost $10.00 for it. The steaks are great, the breads are great, the deserts are great and the service is great. I've been a fan for at least a dz yrs going there several times a yr. Hope to see it continue to prosper. I don't understand the negative reviews. I can only believe it must be for the owners political views. Those negative reviews are completely unwarranted. It's too bad people have to bring politics into the mix and lie after, I'm certain, enjoying a great meal. The prices are in line with most other steakhouses in Houston. I will continue to enjoy their foods in the future. Re/ the wait for seating: no reservations equals a long wait and that's only because the place is great, otherwise people wouldn't be coming back. While you wait they offer free soda and tea drinks as well as chips and salsa, and popcorn; where else does one get that? The service has ALWAYS been prompt whether the restaurant was 1/2 full or full. Everyone that I have taken there has loved it!!!!

Cons: puny salad bar

This locally owned restaurant has been a favorite in my native Houstonian family for over a decade. We always go there for special occasions (birthdays, graduation, etc.). Sure there are no reservations, so you have to wait, but they have a huge comfortable waiting area with a bar, popcorn to snack on, and plenty of TV's to watch, if you're not the type to converse with your party. The prices are high, but they would hardly be in business if they weren't, given the quality of the food and the entire experience.\r\n Once you're seated, every experience that I've ever had was extremely positive. The service is fast and friendly, the salad bar is so amazing it is difficult to leave room for the delectable steak. Be sure to try the cinnamon-honey butter on your rolls. The filet mignon wrapped in bacon with garlic butter is to die for, always perfectly cooked, and NOTHING like Saltgrass or any other chain steakhouse, whose steaks are like hamburgers in comparison. Grilled balsamic portabella and steamed asparagus with hollandaise are my favorite sides, but all the sides are good. \r\n They have the most amazing chocolate strawberries with romanoff sauce that I have ever tasted, but they are unfortunately seasonal and hard to catch. The cheesecake, 3-chocolate mousse cake, or fresh berries in a dark chocolate shell will always suffice in a pinch though. Long story short, I've been going there for years and will continue to go there for many more years, regardless of what any spoiled reviewers hem and haw about. Try it for yourself!

Pros: Amazing steak, sides, salad bar, and service,

Cons: The chocolate covered strawberries are SEASONAL! :(

The place is a tourist trap, plain and simply put. The steaks don't come near Pappas Brothers, Flemings, Capital Grill and etc. The salad bar is the only redeeming value. It's amazing the place does so well, except for the fact it plays off the TEXAS motif. Don't waste your time or money, you can get the same quality at Salt Grass for half the price. YES, I said Salt Grass, that Fertittatized chain that has a much personality as Jack in the Box.

This place is too expensive in light of the quality of food. This place is oddly popular, making the no-reservations policy tremendously oppressive. And it's very ""suburban"" in the worst ways.

This is the best restaurant that we have been to in Texas and the California Bay area. Yes, it will be a little more expensive, but it is of the highest Quality. It is hard to cook an almost 2 inch ribeye perfectly and they did two for us. The crew was great and quick to serve. I judge a restaurant's cleanliness by how clean their restrooms are. TTR was one of the best in the cleanliness, which was also confirmed by the cleanliness of the kitchen when we selected our steaks. \r\nUnfortunately, it is obvious that some people in these reviews are being negative about this restaurant because they do not agree with the politics of the owner, who has a morning talk show in Houston. Don't listen to those reviews. If you a want a great, family oriented, steakhouse experience, go to Taste of Texas and find out for yourself.

If I were rating the food, I would give it 4 stars; however, my latest experience was so bad that Taste of Texas has lost a lifetime customer. \nWebsite says ""family-friendly,"" but it is NOT. If small children are a problem, this term should not be used. Apparently loud obnoxious salesmen are not a problem, because the table next to us carried on as much as they wanted.

We left....walked over to Papasitos...we were seated in about 20 min....Had a GREAT time.\r\nI will never return to Taste of Texas....

Taste of Texas is below average based on the available steakhouses in Houston. Their strongest suit is the decor and overpriced wine list which carries some very nice labels, but at a premium price. Steaks are not on the level of Capital Grill, Pappas, Morton's, Ruth's, and etc. They rank somewhere between those mentioned and the Texas Land and Cattle, and Saltgrass quality. It is a great place to take foreign visitors for the ambience and ""Texas"" decor; during Christmas holidays they decorate beautifully. Side dishes are not comparible to the ""upper end"" steakhouses in Houston. A great salad bar with cheeses and wonderful breads. If you were to rank it on it's own without comparison to our ""upper end"" steakhouses, it would fair much better.\r\n\r\nI can't belive TofT shows up as a wine bar. IT IS DEFINATELY NOT A WINE BAR!!!

I am not much of a complainer but this is by far the worse Steakhouse.\r\n\r\nTo make this review short and strait to the point; I went to Taste Of Texas Monday night with friends, and waited for 1 1/2hrs to get a table. When I ordered the Cowboy Steak (24oz Ribeye bone in) med-rare it came out med-well. For a $40 steak I expected great steak. I complained, and the second time around it came out RARE. I was very upset with the food, so I talked to the manager to put the steak in a to-go box since all my friends had already finished eating before I had a chance to enjoy my steak. He said he will give me compensation for the trouble, and I get a discount $25. I personally think a slab of steak from Chili?s for $15 bucks would be better. Spoke to the manager again to take the to go box and the cost of my steak off the bill, and I came home empty handed after driving and waiting for a disappointing steak.\r\n\r\nOverall, management team needs to learn the importance of satisfied customers, and for a well known steakhouse I expected great steak.\r\n

Taste of Texas is most definitely the best steakhouse I have ever been to! My husband's company Christmas dinner was held there this past Saturday. As soon as I heard where the dinner was to be held, I looked the restaurant up to read the reviews. There were several mixed reviews so I wasn't expecting to be totally wowed. It took a while for us to be seated (about an hour and a half), since they don't take reservations... not even for large parties; we had about 25 in our group. The restaurant was very tastefully decorated with Christmas decore. The fireplaces were lit and the atmosphere was very cozy and comfortable. Once we were seated, our waiter was obviously on top of things, as he took all of our drink orders and had them brought out very quickly. He was very attentive and was able to handle our large crowd with what looked like ease. The salad bar was small but held all that you would need to build your own salad to your liking. I ordered the Center Cut Filet (filet mignon) which was cooked to order and perfectly so; and I added a lobster tail to my meal for my own surf and turf meal. My husband and I shared the creme brule for dessert and it was wonderful as well! All was absolutely delicious! There was very little chatter at our table once the food arrived because everyone was so busy enjoying their delicious food! All 25 people in our group were totally satisfied with their meal as it was prepared and served. So 2 very enthusiastic thumbs up for Taste of Texas, the best little steakhouse in Texas!
