Everything's Bigger,...Except the salads....

by James R.

Been there a few times, and normally get huge portions, big burgers, etc. Today I ordered the Club Salad for $7.99. My wife ordered a side salad with her burger. My salad was no bigger than her side salad. It said it had ham, turkey, unions, egg, tomato and cheese. Came with 1 egg cut in half, a decent amount of cheese, I had to search to find the little pee sized pieces of deli style meat, a stick of onion that I apparently had to cut up myself, and half a tomato which was likewise only cut in half - Seeds and goo still inside and green in spots. I could not believe how small the salad was, considering they likely pay $0.25 for an entire head of lettuce. DON'T ORDER THE SALADS - Go to TGIF's for great [big] salads. This thing was a rip off!

Alabama can keep their throwed rolls....

by Robert S.

Primo.. Chicken fry was xcellent. Crispy, tender, bursting with flavor.. Sides were great. Mashed potatoes rock! Peach cobbler to die for. Bob L must be a yankee or a competitor! Either way, he has no taste buds....

Wasted Trip

by Bob L.

Went a long way to try this "award winning" Chicken Fried Steak at Goodsons. I wish I had listened to the other reviews. It was a wasted trip. To their credit the service was very good. The place was packed and the very friendly wait staff was bouncing around with fervor. They were fairly prompt with all our requests considering the crowd. A friend and I both ordered the CFS. It came reasonably soon and when I bit into it, I realized our mistake. The meat was hammered thin and coated with a thick breading. It had little flavor but mainly was not fully cooked. The breading was greasy and not at all crispy. Each bite gave a distinct taste of paste. The gravy was similar: definite starchy texture from being under cooked and not much flavor. It made us wonder if their chefs know how to cook. I had a bad taste in my mouth from the raw starch and grease the rest of the day. If this steak was properly cooked and better seasoned it would still only be fairly good and definitely not win any awards. The sides were good: mashed potatoes (no homemade flair as I had heard) were good, rolls were good and fried okra was very good, being fresh and crisp. If I lived close by or was in the area for some other reason, I would try some of the other menu items. They looked good on the surrounding tables. However, I would not make a special trip or try the CFS again. My friends reaction was about the same.

Very Good

by Lesley H.

I went to Goodson's last night with my dad, hubby, and 19 month old daughter. I had read some reviews saying that their food had gone down hill. Well I had the blackened catfish and shrimp...it was awesome! Hubby had the blackened chicken alfredo and ate ever bit of it. My dad had the famous chicken fried steak and HOMEMADE mashed potatoes, he said it was great. My daughter had the chicken tenders and fries. The tenders were wonderful but the fries were a bit lacking...kinda blah. The tea could have been a little stronger as well. The service was good and they didn't seem to mind that my child had thrown food all over the floor.

whats happening

by George B.

been in tomball long enough to eat at the old goodson (in huffsmith) and the new in tomball, food has been fantastic up until the last few months, has something changed? had gotten the small chicken fried steak and it was tough and full of gristle, mentioned to my mother when i got home and her response was the same thing. Been around for a very long time and have always enjoyed going to goodson cafe, but getting to a point of "just another chicken fried steak" kinda taste.

Smokers Not Welcome On Weekends

by G W.

As good as the food is at Goodson's Cafe, they do not welcome smokers on the weekends. It seems only on weekdays when they are hurting for business are smokers welcome to dine there. Its not something they advertise either. I won't be wasting my gas to be turned away again.

Yummy and Inexpensive!!

by heather b.

We are from Oklahoma and since we were in the Houston area this weekend we thought we'd make a trip over to Tomball to see what the Travel Channel was talking about with Goodson's Cafe. We, of course, HAD to order the 'best chicken fried steak in Texas.' My husband and I split a full size order with two sides that rings in just under $10. What a meal!!! First, we were brought homemade yeast dinner rolls with a big bowl of country gravy. They were delicious!!! When the chicken fried steak arrived, we couldn't believe our eyes!!! That much meat could have EASILY fed 3-4 adults!! It was truly that big. It tasted great, too!! It was tender on the inside and crisp on the outside. And, you could still taste the yummy steak instead of just all battered outside. We ordered the fried okra and mashed potatoes as our side items. The mashed potatoes were HOMEMADE!!! And, the fried okra was pretty good, to boot! I'd recommend this place to anyone!! Also, we took our ornery 2 year old son, and we felt it was a VERY family friendly place!!

Wednesday - Chicken & Dumplings

by Anonymous

I highly recommend going to Goodson's on Wednesday at lunch for the Chicken and Dumplings. They are VERY good - grandma style dumplings that can't be beat.

WASH YOUR HANDS

by Brook N.

The food was good, Value nice. I just wish after the waiter sneezed into his hand, he might think about washing it next time, before serving food. Luckily, he wasn't the one who brought our food. The date was March 11 at around 5 pm.

service at Goodsons

by Janie R.

We have eaten at Goodsons many times, however today 1-20-08 the services was the worst we have ever received. Our server was Mike. For starters our appetizer never made it to our table, my granddaughters order was not turned in so when the food arrived she was not served. We had to go find him to tell him he forgot her food. Another order at our table was messed up also but instead of turning it back in and waiting another 30 min. we just let it go....he also took our glasses to refill them and mixed them up when he came back to the table.

Great food, friendly staff

by Teri L. | insider Insider | Rank: 14,168

Our first visit to Goodson's Cafe in Tomball. We were greeted and seated promptly by the hostess. I chose the pot roast, which was really tender. The dinner rolls were divine! Atmosphere is pleasant. Price was very reasonable. We'll definitely return next time we're in Tomball.

Country Cafe

by Edward C. | insider Insider | Rank: 20,711

The food was great. I had the seafood combo expecting it would be so-so being at a country type establishment, but was I surprised. The catfish and shrimp were good and fresh. The price was reasonable and the atmosphere was as you would expect from a country place.
