Sylvia Enchilada Kitchen

★★★☆☆
Enjoy Tex-Mex and traditional Mexican-style enchiladas made completely from scratch, including the Donna beef enchilada with Sylvia's signature chili gravy, the Lubbock beef enchilada prepared west Texas-style, the Crystal City spinach enchilada with fresh spinach sautéed with herbs and spices and covered with tomatillo sauce, the Sarita enchiladas de calabacita with traditional Mexican veggies sautéed and combined with queso and a light cream sauce, the Laguna Madre with crab and creamy seafood sauce, the Hidalgo enchiladas de carnitas with grilled pork and salsa verde or red sauce and topped with avocado, the Mexico City chicken enchiladas made the classic Mexican way and topped with salsa verde and sour cream. Mexican Restaurant Sylvia's classic appetizers include chicken flautitas, chicken quesadillas, chile con queso, chips and salsa, pickled jalapeños and cocktail tamales. Enjoy vegetarian plates, fajitas, burritos, tamales and more. At the Woodway location, all meats are grilled over a mesquite wood fire, and the beef fajitas are known for being fork-tender and tasting like a juicy like a well-aged steak. Beef fajitas at Sylvia's are often referred to as the "best in Houston" by her loyal foodie customers. Fajitas are served with chile con queso, rice, beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream, cheddar cheese and homemade corn or flour tortillas.

If you love great enchiladas and margaritas, this is the place for you! It can be kind of noisy inside because everyone is obviously enjoyiing their food! It has a patio outside if you enjoy al fresco dining. Well written up in the Houston Chronicle.

Sylvia's is simply the best. The kitchen doesn't rely on extra globs of cheese and butter to make it's food tasty. You will have your best Mexican meal ever and not feel like you've eaten a house afterward.

We went here after hearing rave reviews of how good it was. Our server was very very nice. Ordered chicken salad and my friend had the enchiladas. All was ok, til early the next morning ..my friend became very ill. SHE was ill for 5 days....It was just horrible. Will not return as something needs to be done to correct their food sanitation.

My husband and I have been to Sylvia's many time for their breakfasts on the weekend. Which, by the way is one of the best around!!! I work at the Fire Station near Sylvia's. The guys at the station are always teasing me about not "cooking" at the fire station. So, I decided to order take-out for my Fire Station for the day we had our "Muscular Dystrophy Fill The Boot" day, so no one would have to cook that day. I spoke with the manager, "Stephanie", who was very helpful with the ordering. I was sketical about the portions and what type of food to order. But, just as she said...there was plenty for all and everyone seemed to really enjoy the enchiladas. My daughters are attending a bridal shower later this month at Sylvia's. If their catering services are half as good as their take out or dine-in service....WOW...what more could you ask for?!!!! So, with the excellant food and service we got with Sylvia's...I think I'll be "cooking" more at the fire station!!!

We were very excited when we learned that Sylvia??s was opening a location near our house on Woodway, and couldn??t wait to try it. We had never eaten at the old location, although we had taken a cooking class instructed by Sylvia at Central Market about a year ago.
We arrived about 8:15 and the dining room was about at about 15% capacity which caused some concern but stayed anyway. The waiter was a complete dud; he had no personality and acted as if he was doing us a favor by waiting on us. My wife quizzed our semi-conscious waiter about their Sangria and after telling her how great they were she ordered one. Apparently the fruit was soured or someone mistakenly poured some vinegar in the glass; either way it was ??undrinkable.? After asking the waiter twice he finally removed it from the table. (He did deduct it from the bill)

The chips and ??hot? sauce served while we waited for dinner were nothing special and the sauces had very little flavor and NO heat. I had the ??HIDALGO - ??Enchiladas de Carnitas?? Grilled Pork Enchiladas served with either Verde Sauce or a Red Sauce & topped with Avocado Slices. Red Sauce is HOT!? I asked for their spiciest sauce and we directed to the Red Sauce so I had two enchiladas with four slices of avocado about 1/8? thick, a dab of refried beans fresh from the Old El Paso can, and the most tasteless Mexican rice I??ve ever eaten. The enchiladas had maybe one tablespoon of meat in each and it was ??cooked down? to thick gravy. The red sauce tasted like they squeezed a packet of Taco Bell??s mild sauce onto my dwarf enchiladas. My wife ordered the ??BROWNSVILLE - Cheese Enchilada, Crispy Beef Taco, Chile Con Queso Tastada served with Rice and Beans.? The chili gravy on the enchilada was tasteless and room temperature, the taco mimicked that of Jack-in-the-Box, the Chile Con Queso was the best thing on the plate (not hard to pour cheese on a tortilla) and the rice and beans were a duplicate of mine. She left over half of her meal (which was very small) as she didn??t care for anything but the Chile Con Queso. I finished my entire plate as the portions were very small, and after paying $12.00 for two enchiladas I certain was going to leave them.

Sylvia came by our table and noticed my wife??s plate only half gone and she inquired as to how she like it (not a good move) and she gave very descriptive account of each item on the Brownsville and explained why she didn??t like them. To which Sylvia replied, ??That??s too bad, everyone really likes our sauce, the chili gravy is what we??re famous for.? Then she turned to me, and I told her it was the blandest Mexican food I??d ever eaten and had no flavor. She said ??I??m sorry you didn??t care for it, but please come back again and try something else.? We certainly weren??t looking for a comp??d tab and would have refused if offered, but it wasn??t.

The next weekend we were visiting with some neighbors and they had all tried Sylvia??s (it??s in our neighborhood) and it was amazing how similar everyone??s comments were to ours. After that we all discussed what type of restaurant we wanted in the location once Sylvia??s closes down.

Pros: Location, Water

Cons: Food, Service, Prices

.

Great food--been going there for 15 years now. Try the chili rellano--wonderful. And she (Sylvia) even teaches cooking classes now. Service is wonderful and you only need one frozen margarita.

Pros: great food, hardly a wait time on busy nights as service is just great

Cons: take service is not recommended--always forget something for big lunch orders.

Sylvia?s is my favorite restaurant. The food is always so fresh and the enchiladas are the best in the city. Her enchilada gravy alone takes 18 hours to make from scratch, and believe me, it?s worth it! I also recently tried her beef fajitas, and now that?s become my new favorite dish there. Be sure to try the margaritas! They?re fantastic and a great value for the price. I live in the Heights, and for me, the drive is definitely worth it, because nothing inside the loop even compares to Sylvia?s.

The Most Authentic Horrible Mexican Food!!! We were first greeted by Ms. Sylvia herself and let me tell you, the pictures that show her smiling all the time, do not do her justice. She seemed to be irritated as she walked us to our table and unfortunately we didn't get the warm-and-fuzzies from the owner herself. I honestly believe that she trained her own staff...since we didn't feel the warm welcome from them, but felt rushed to place our order. Like the "Soup-Nazi" from Seinfield...you had to know exactly what you were ordering or you got THE LOOK! Getting to the food...well, the chips were greasy and our entree's had absolutely no taste, unless you think bland is a taste. You are much better off buying a Lean Cuisine enchilada platter. And no matter how much the waiter is selling this and says that "it's the best in Houston"...never, never, never order the Cabrito. Needless to say, we are never going back there again.

I am Hispanic and consider myself a connoisseur of Mexican food and I must say that Sylvias was a disappointing dining experience to say the least. The chips were stale and the salsa had a metalic taste (they must be using canned tomatoes) the chicken enchiladas hardly had any chicken in them, the rice was bland and overcooked, and my boyfriend's fajitas were tough and generic. I will not ever return.

My husband has been eating Tex-Mex Food and Enchiladas in particular for nearly 65 years from "true" West Texas to east of the Mississippi River and Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen ranks by far as the BEST in the southwest. We recently sampled the Crab Enchilada Plate and my husband swore he heard angels hovering around his head. For impeccable service, presentation and the ultimate Enchilada experience Sylvia's is not to be missed. And if you're really lucky - you may even get a hug from the beautiful and gracious owner herself.

Pros: Too many to list...

Cons: That there is only one location.

I have been a weekly customer at Sylvia's for over a year. I have my favorite waiter, Charlie. We make sure we always sit in his section. By the time we are seated, Charlie has our drinks in hand!!..
When I first moved to Houston, I went there b/c my first name is Sylvia (I know, silly). However, name aside, the food/service have kept me coming back. When Sylvia is there, she makes it a point to visit your table and say Hello. The food is like how I would make it at home, if I had the time. Try it, just once and you too will be hooked!! I love eatling at Sylvia's!!

I go to Sylvia's regularly with friends. I've never had bad service or bad food. Chips, salsa, and drinks are refilled often by the attentive waitstaff. More often than not, Sylvia is walking around checking to see how the food is. I almost always get the fajitas, but the enchiladas are great too! I love the tortillas, which are always freshly made. Friday nights can get a bit crowded so get there early if you don't like to wait!

SYLVIA'S DOES NOT LIVE UP TO ALL THE HYPE. REVIEWS ARE PROBABLY EMP. OR FAMILY.
THE ONLY TASTY THING I ATE WAS THE REFRIED BEANS. THE WAITER WAS NOT ATTENTIVE, HE PAYED MORE ATTENTION TO HIS LARGER PARTY, AND HE GOT MY DAUGHTERS ORDER WRONG. NOT IMPRESSED TO SAY THE LEAST!

We went to Sylvia's Enchilada kitchen on a Friday night. We were sitting outside. Our server was busy checking out other girls and was not interacting with us at all. He got our menu wrong, he did not come check up on us, did not offer us dessert and handed us the check without any greeting or directions that we had to pay at front. I was extremely annoyed by his service and our evening was left stale thanks to our server's bad unresponsive service

The rita's are GREAT, the queso can't be beat, all the dishes are WONDERFUL and made with the freshest ingredients, and they have the BEST charro beans you will ever put in your mouth. And for those of you who only eat flour tortillas...you haven't lived until you have had one of Sylvia's fresh corn tortillas. I have never taken a guest there that didn't want to lick their plate clean!

For weekend breakfast, lunch or dinner, Sylvia's is my favorite kitchen. I like to cook, I grew up on Tex-Mex in west Texas, and I get lots of compliments on my own dishes - but Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen entices me out of my kitchen regularly. The service, friendliness of all the staff, consistently high quality of the food, and excellent taste all keep me coming back.

Had heared food was exceptional "valley" food. Not impressed. There are plenty of other Mexican restaurants in Houston that have better tasting food and service for a better overall price. We will not return.

Sylvia's has the BEST Mexican food I have ever tasted. Her salsa is to die for as is everything on the menu. I had never had a mexican shrimp cocktail before Sylvia's and have NEVER had one as good since. Highly recommend Sylvia's restaurant as one of the best places to eat in Houston.

My wife and I have been going ot Sylvia's for years, and the food and service has always been consistently excellent. I am a native from South Texas and so consider myself a Tex-Mex connoisseur. Sylvia's has by-far the best enchiladas I've ever tasted. She has over 15 different kinds, which can satisfy anyone. It would be worth anyone's effort to give the place a try.

I visited this restaurant for the first time last night. We'll be coming back soon for sure. The menu includes about a dozen differnent kinds of enchiladas as well as tacos, quesadillas, fajitas, etc. I had the calabacita & corn enchiladas with cream sauce - yum. They have several vegetarian menu items and meaty ones too. Decor was nice too, and the service friendly. My only negative is the location - I wish they were more central.

That is sylvia's new address. We ate there last friday night. It was not very crowded and the food was decent. We started off with the queso flameada made with real mexican cheese and they did not skimp on the chorizo. For the entree, I had the king ranch enchilada which I thought was steak but was ground beef. I liked the sauce and the salsa but the ground beef made the enchilada kind of wimpy.

I've been eating there for several years, and I was glad when it moved to the larger location at Wesheimer and Dairy Ashford. Now the wait is much less at crowded times. the food is always tasty and fresh, the margaritas are excellent, and the owner and staff are very friendly and helpful. A real treat every time I go.

I've eaten at Sylvia's since they were located in the smaller restaurant near Hwy 6. Moving to a larger location has not changed the excellent quality of their food and service. Consistently high quality, the best TexMex I've had in West Houston.

Sylvia's Enchilada kitchen has the best margarita's and anything you order is to die for. Sylvia herself is usually around the restaurant, talking to guests or in the kitchen, making sure that everything is how it should be. You have to try it to believe me and you won't be sorry.
