Message from Howl At The Moon San Antonio

Merchant_icon

Howl at the Moon takes the term "piano bar" to new heights, with piano players offering up witty discourse while encouraging the audience to "sing-along" to songs almost everyone knows by heart. Howl at the Moon is a place where you'll find "friends you have not met yet," with everyone drawn together by the camaraderie and nostalgia to form one large, synergistic party, swaying to the music, bellowing out familiar lyrics. It's a place for a good time--for travelers in search of local color, and for people of all ages and occupations in the community. You will never find exactly the same people at "Howl" on any given night. Howl's a hot spot for birthdays, anniversaries, bachelor, and bachelorette parties. Thursday has a PULSE aka "College Night". Friday is the World's Greatest Happy Hour. Visit our website at the link above for our calendar and all our specials.

In Short
Piano bars exist to serve one indelible human need: to sing after you've had a few. Howl at the Moon is a sometimes-excellent piano bar, but a dearth of seating and the large area around the two bars make the place feel like a pickup joint. Nevertheless, it's a piano bar and that means you can't help but have fun when the best songs are played and the packed-in audience starts rocking in off-key enthusiasm.

Key Points

  • On the Riverwalk
  • Open Nightly 'til 2am
  • Great Venue for Parties

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - Be prepared for off-color jokes, as well as good-natured public humiliation of folks called up to the stage.
  2. The Extras - Want to hear that one great song? Get out your wallet. The piano players take requests, but you better back it up with some moola.

Ratings_icons Howl At The Moon San Antonio is AWFUL!

Katy B.

This is not a place to go unless you want to get drunk. That's the only way you will enjoy the so called music. The least they could do is hire a hott girl to sing. Look at the video to see what I mean...can you say "soo-eh"!

This is a great dueling piano bar. I was great fun here. I liked the mirror behind the musicians where you can pay to have a message written on. If you are in San Antonio Texas,,, get in here for FUN.

Ratings_icons Talented Musicians?

Blondie22

I often question who is writing the reviews? I think the managers ask the employees to get on these websites and write great reviews.

The service is substandard, the food is substandard, the drinks are substandard. The entertainment is a few amateur musicians with the same line-up, jokes, etc. every night.

Several of these reviews speak of the talent of the musicians...I guess to a bunch of drunks they sound good. But to the finely tuned ear...the musicians are substandard too. They really don't know all the songs they are playing. They strike a few chords and get some words right and the customer who just tipped $20 to hear the song doesn't realize he has been had... All the while the piano guy is smirking.

Where are the talented musicians - NOT HERE!

Pros: ???

Cons: Everything else

Ratings_icons Music venue? WHAT?

jpbergman

This is a classic example of how CIty Search does not always work. If you look at the best bars and best bartender, etc. it is the same places over and over in the downtown area. It is obvious a few places caught wind of the contest and blew out the possibility of true results. How about places that will give you a variety of music styles? Sound quality, anyone?

The place is a blast, but it is the samedamn piano bar as anywhere else. Loud as h3ll, crowded as h3ll and expensive. Do I go there? You bet and I have a blast, but to put this down as the best music venue in San Antonio is a crime.

What about The Majestic (one of the best most beautiful... not to mention famous sound quality) venues in the U.S.A., Wise Guys (The old Rox), Casbeers, Broadway 50/50. There are a ton of places out there that offer a variety of music and not just a couple of "pianists" making panty jokes.

If I were to rate it for best piano bar I would give it 4 stars, but for best music venue I would give it <1 star.

Hey, Howl at the Moon folks? Why not allow the system to work. Over voting just to get some marketing is b.s.

Pros: Great place to get silly drunk and go crazy.

Cons: Expensive and crowded.

Ratings_icons Some of the best and most versatile musicians!

ladyluckforgood

I'm not a go out all night girl (I have a 3 year old) but this place was so fun the time just flew by! We got there early cause i didn't think that we would be out past like 10. We didn't really have trouble getting seats at 7:30 but they filled up fast and when we left everybody was standing. I had a blast and watched the guys (and 1 girl) on stage all night. i noticed after a while that they could play everything up there! Not only do they know like every song but apparently they can play like any intrument too! Such a great night :)

Great place to go! If you are a service industry/hospitality employee, just show your check stub at the door and you'll get in for free, plus you'll get 50% off your tab 7 days a week! This is the only bar I;ve ever been to with that kind of offer!

Pros: Service industry, unique experience

Cons: Stays really crowded

You must get there early to get a good seat...the service was great and the drinks kept flowing...and the end of the night the tap was decent.

Ratings_icons Fun for everyone over 21

sunflower3284

Though the crowd was mostly 30+ it was a great time. The "dueling" pianos, and comedic antics of the players were great. You do not have to be drunk to enjoy this place. Drinks were good, service was good, and the music was good. I am planning to go again very soon.

Pros: Song Request, SIN night

Cons: Noise Level

Ratings_icons For a "Howling" Good Time...

turtlegurl_02

I just got back from San Antonio with my boyfriend. We read the user reviews and decided to try this place out. It was the best time we had all weekend! A bit expensive (but then, we're from a college town and used to getting cheap drinks), totally worth it! We laughed so hard our faces hurt. Surprising to see people of all ages having so much fun all in one place.

Ratings_icons Most fun you'll have!!!

SoldierMedic

This place is outfreakinstanding!!! I went there on a whim a few months ago and I cant stay away. THe editor says the piano players try to hard to be musicians...THEY ARE MUSCIANS. I wish I could play that well.
Bring your friends and a couple of bucks and I guarantee you'll have a balst. If your military...extra bonus. Ask them to play your branchs song and get ready to get patriotic! A must for anyone over 21 who enjoys great live music from the oldies of the temptations, elvis, allman brothers up to creed, these guys play it all.
Only one word of advice. If you get there after 9 your probably not gettin a seat so arrive early. After 10, get ready to stand.
