I went here for a few years, but the last time that I went, I went in and told the vet that my dog was pregnant because she was acting strangely. The vet said my dog might have a pyometra, which could be deadly, so of course I obliged to the tests. $400 later, the tests came back and were inconclusive, but the vet recommended immediate surgery. Had I listened to the vet, I would have killed my dogs 7 puppies. My dog was of course, pregnant (that's what I came in for), What the vet did NOT tell me, was that the only way to tell the difference between a pyometra and pregnancy is through an ultrasound. It would have been nice to know that before he did $400 worth of tests!!!! I wrote letters to the clinic, thinking that they would want to clear this up with me since I had been a long time client, and was going to have lots of puppies that would need vet care. The person I spoke to was incredibly rude and defensive, and I never got a response to my letters. Customers should not be treated this way. Now that I have gone to another vet, I see just how OVERPRICED this vet is. I highly recommend Midtown Vet Clinic on West Alabama - affordable and very thoughtful.
Leo was the sweetest rescue cat we've had for over a decade since he was a kitten. Never had any serious problems. Upon a sense of urgency, the staff told us they were booked. The staff then decided to take our pet and our $350 to run a quick, visual diagnoses. They sent us home with antibiotics claiming he had a stomach bug. Leo died 3 days later. It's clear he was not given a thorough examination and we understood that the staff and doc wanted to go home for the day since it was on a Friday afternoon. We called to speak with them and the receptionist told us he passed along Leo's file to the doctor and that the doctor would call us back. Never received a phone call.
I was recommended here by a friend last Spring. My first call to this clinic, I was skeptical because I just moved into town from out of state. The receptionist I spoke with eased my fears with her spunky personality and caring tone. She assured me that my little ones would love the Doctors here, and boy were they right!
My animals absolutely LOVE Dr. McDaniel, and they have no problem trusting her every time they see her face! Also, the Technicians here that come to get my little ones are always so helpful and attentive to any questions that I may have. They are always patient, and the Technicians and Dr. McDaniel will spend the time necessary to educate me about what needs to be done for my little babies.
I will NEVER go anywhere else, and I highly recommend this clinic to anyone who loves their little ones! It is worth every dollar you will spend. Would you go to Nordstrom and expect Wal-Mart prices? Absolutely NOT! You get what you pay for. Don't waste any more time, go see these great guys at Montrose Vet Clinic!!
Thank you guys for always taking care of my children!!
This is the finest group of people in the veterinary profession I have ever encountered, and that includes stints in other states and overseas. They are professional yet compassionate.
When we moved back to Houston in 2006, we found this clinic via their website, "where we treat your pet like family." It is true.
In 2006 we had two elderly dogs, one 12 and the other at least 11. The 11 yo turned out to be more elderly than we knew.
Bridgett died in late 2007, and this was when we learned how unique MVC truly is. They treated our loss as their own. They were kind, considerate, and did everything they could to make it easier to endure our decision to prevent Bridgett further suffering. they followed up with communications and were thrilled when we brought our new pups in for their first checkups.
REMEMBER when you commit to a dog, you commit to it to the end of its life, to help them as much as you can even though they cannot always tell you what they are feeling. MVC helps us do that.
Just yesterday we took our almost-17-year-old Toy Fox Terrier in for the last time. She was very sick, and I know she was ready to go, but it was so hard for me to let her go. The vets at MVC, Dr. McDaniel and Dr. Powell, again did all they could to ask about Abby's condition, whether her meds were helping, and finally to help us end her suffering as painlessly and lovingly as you could hope for. Even though Dr McDaniel was out of town for the weekend, she checked in via email to ensure that we were okay through this difficult time.
Yes, the parking can be difficult, and no, it isn't cheap, but if you care about your companion animal and you want the best and most considerate care for you AND your companion, please consider MVC
More than a customer/client, I am an aficianado of MVC...
I have never been as offended by a Vet in my life and personally find the Vet to be completely incompetent. For instance, the vet couldn't get a good sample draining an absess on my dog because he was squirming. A dog squirming, really? And, a blood test was taken, test results came back positive for lyme's disease, but no antiobiotics were prescribed -- even though I had mentioned my dog was vomiting from phlegm build-up. Then when I made a second appointment (idiot that I am) to get the much-needed vaccine so that I could board my dog and go home and visit my family for the holidays, I was told that she would not administer the vaccine for the same phlegm issues that didn't merit antiobiotics 2 weeks ago. I suppose the treatment is supposed to be weekly appointments to monitor something that could have been so easily handled by a prescription of antiobiotics (having moved from the northeast, the dog has had lyme's disease before and every single time the vet has prescribed antiobiotics). When I complained about having to pay for multiple visits with no vaccine or antiobiotics prescribed, I was attacked for being willing to put my dog in danger. Having spent literally tens of thousands of dollars on this dog (elongated palette shortened, 2 stomach surgeries to have digested items removed, nights of hospital care in an oxygen tank when he was a puppy), I was quite offended. The dog was running around her office, runs around at home, but has phlegm build up and throws up when he eats. Its extremely frustrating to be accustomed to practical sense and care for my dog and to lose that care when moving to another city. To have to multiple costly appointments to deal with problems that we're competently addressed in the past (and to not have immediate care taken and to have pay for non-care) is extremely frustrating. Now, I have to spend time finding another vet who will run all the same tests, I will pay for them twice, and in the meantime I have to watch my dog throw up phlegm when he eats.
Problems with Montrose Veterinary Clinic:
We boarded our dog, 7 year old male mixed breed, while on a 4 day weekend trip recently. We picked the dog up and 5 days later our dog came down with kennel cough. We called the clinic and alerted them to the fact we had a sick dog. The first response from the front desk was you can schedule an appt. for Monday...we declined and said no, we have a sick dog and we want you to talk to the Vet and would like to pick up medications so we can treat the our dog before the kennel cough morphs to something more serious. The Clinic called us back and said we could stop by and pick up medication. We arrived at the clinic and were told the medication was $40 some dollars. We questioned this as it was clear our dog contracted kennel cough while being boarded at the Clinic. We asked the billing be discussed with Vet on duty and got attitude from the front desk. We were told, after checking with the Vet on duty, the bill would stand. This did not sit well with us and we told the front desk we did not agree with the decision as it did not seem to pass the test of what's fair. We paid the bill and left. We will not be back and will go elsewhere for veterinary care and services.
This clinic should think about ways to improve their business practices in several areas.
1. Front desk staff needs customer service training in working with and managing customer complaints and issues. As a customer we do not need a 20 something getting testy and upset because she has to deal with a upset customer. Get some training to manage these things professionally. The front desk sets the customer perception of the business so customer service training is a good investment.
2. Procedures to minimize highly contagious diseases like kennel cough need to be looked at and steps taken within the clinic facility to minimize infections.
3. Staff should think twice before blindly billing customers when there is an issue.
One hopes ownership will read this review and give some thought to the above recommendations.
In closing, there is an old car sales rule that still applies...if a customer has a good experience they will typically tell at least two people. If they have a bad experience they will typically tell ten people.
Do the math...
I've been going to MVC for eight years and Dr. Powell and everyone else on every level of staff has been unfailingly kind to my four family-member pets, two dogs and two cats. The doctors have up to date knowledge of treatments and have kept everyone thriving, even my geriatric pets. I currently visit three times a week with my 19-year-old cat, who needs fluid treatment for her chronic kidney failure. She is doing remarkably well two years after her diagnosis. My pets have also received excellent care while boarding. The front desk staff keeps its cool under the most stressful and harried conditions.
I recommend the clinic to everyone I know.
I always found the veterinary care to be outstanding; however, I would not recommend boarding your pets if they are older/geriatric at the Montrose Veterinary Clinic. I boarded my dogs at this clinic, and when I picked them up, my oldest dog had sores on his back legs and feet from trying to stand up in his crate - he must have scraped his legs raw while lying in the crate, and the sores were not treated. Older dogs, of course, require extra care, additional walks, and a close eye to ensure that they do not run into any problems. It did not appear that they received the extra TLC that they needed while being boarded. I will not board my dogs there again.
I took my puppy here to get its shots, While waiting I observed the way the receptionist treated all the clients, the atmosphere. Leah and Mindy were very helpful to everyone. The doctor that gave my little baby her shots was so kind. Should anything happen to my baby I will be sending her back here. In addition, to her well care treatments. I love this clinic and the people that work here.
I would never entrust my baby to people I did not believe in. Try this clinic you will love it.
Everyone I talked to in the lobby told wonderful stories of the vets and the exceptional way they treated their animals like children. The way they made it their business to save their lives. The way they care. Which to me is all that matters, they care.
I took my cat in for her vaccines to another vet, and she had a severe allergic reaction. I took her to Montrose and they fixed her up, to the tune of $267. However, they accidentally charged me $267 twice. My bank replaced the money in my account within a week, so I didn't have a serious problem personally, but the bank apparently had to fight the clinic for several weeks before they refunded the money. Not only did they never apologize for making such a stupid mistake, they spent much of those weeks arguing that the charges were right and that I was "mistaken." They didn't even ACKNOWLEDGE their mistake until the bank began making noises about litigation...
However, the vet was very friendly (not nexessarily to me, but to the cat - which is all that counts). I just wouldn't trust the airhead clinic staff behind the counter with my credit card ever again.

I have experienced several terrible veterinarians in Houston, and MVC is NOT one of them! Finally I have found the best care for my animals and I am excited to share my discovery!! This clinic is clean, efficient and fun to be in. Everyone is friendly, professional and efficient. The docs there really know their stuff and go out of their way to do a good job. They finally solved a long-standing issue with my older cat and she is doing better than ever. Thank you, Montrose Vet Clinic!! Keep up the incredible work you do.
PROS: Affordable & efficient; caring and knowledgeable docs.
WHAT DO YOU SAY ABOUT A CLINIC THAT SAVED YOUR DOG'S LIFE? I WOULD NOT TAKE MY DOGS TO ANYONE OTHER THAN THE WONDERFUL, COMPASSIONATE VETS AT MONTROSE VET CLINIC. THEY ARE THE #1 BEST IN HOUSTON, HANDS DOWN! THANKS GUYS!
I am so pleased with Montrose Veterinarian Clinic that I want to share my enthusiasmm. MVC is absolutely the most wonderful clinic - organized, effecient, caring. The staff and doctors (all five) are exemplary. I actually feel they love my pets as much as I do! The doctors there practice good, sensible medicine and I would never go anywhere else.
I took my new puppy here because it was close to my home. I'll never go back. They were supposed to put black SoftPaws on my dog for $23. I had to leave my dog there while they put the SoftPaws on her. Instead of calling me to tell me they were out of black, they took the liberty to substitute bright purple ones. My dog (a pointer) looks ridiculous! Then they charged me an extra $16.50 for installation - something they conveniently forgot to tell me when they quoted the $23. When I told them how unhappy I was with the unauthorized color switch, they apologised but offered no resolution. Although they did acknowledge how stupid they looked on her. Then they pulled the typical scare tactic when I told them I wanted to get my heartworm med from PetMeds.com. Finally they gave my dog two other vaccines but forgot to record it in her chart. When I went back and asked them about it, it took them almost half an hour to figure out what they had done! I can't believe this place is still in business.
PROS: Not a single one!
CONS: See review.
My Miss Meister has been a patient at Montrose Veterinary since 2004, and I am so, so pleased. They understand how much you care about your pet/friend/family member and they take every care and caution to treat your pet and maintain his/her health. I've called on the same day with a concern or what I perceive to be an emergency, and they've always made time for me. I love all of the vets and vet assistants there and I highly recommend them to anyone who loves their pet as much as I do. They don't price gouge, either. I would spend a whole lot to have my Miss Meister taken care of, but no need to worry... they are reasonable. I can't imagine any other vet caring for Miss Meister.
PROS: Genuine care, concern... take time, don't rush you in and out
i went here after my great dane was neutered and had complications. The vet was very informative and seemed like he really enjoyed doing what he does, which always makes a big differance. They were pretty cheap. They are a very popular vet so I had a little bit of a wait but it was worth it.
This is probably the most popular vet in the Montrose area. They've been around for years and have a loyal following. The office is very nice and clean, spacious enough for pets to keep their distance from one another in case of any crankiness. The doctors are nice and very knowledgeable. Only problem I've had is that since they are popular and therefore busy, it can sometimes be difficult to get information or make quick appointments - for example, if something is wrong and you are not sure if it is serious enough for an office visit, you may wait a good chunk of the day just to get a call back.
I've been taking my precious pets to this clinic for years and love it. I can always count on being greeted with a smile from the front desk staff, I never have to wait very long, the clinicians are very friendly and knowledgeable, and the best part? Hands-down THE best animal doctors you will find. They saved my lab last year and she's still doing great!!
Wonderful staff, amazing doctors-- LOVE this clinic!!!
The vets are okay but the horrible customer service provided by the front desk staff makes going there and even scheduling an appointment not worth it. It takes forever to schedule an appointment. They constantly put you on hold then come back only to have you repeat everything to another person. Scheduling an appointment should not be difficult. When I expressed my concerns to the office manager, her response was that they were a busy clinic, had eight phone lines, and people in the office. "The girls do the best they can". There are many vets in this area. Go somewhere else!
So, I'm going to start out by saying that Montrose Vet Clinic is by no means cheap. Their prices are probably on par with what most non-ghetto and semi-professional clinics would charge; but they're much more than that! All the veterinarians there are extremely friendly and helpful, the nurses are attentive and caring, and they really do a great job. My dog broke her foot while we were out of town. I took her to Montrose Vet Clinic after getting a splint put on her leg at the out of town vet. They didn't try to swindle me to change out the splint, but they helped me get my head around the healing process and gave me the apppropiate medication. After a follow up visit they changed out the splint because of an infection and sent me on my way (it was pretty pricey, about $300). The next day my dog tore up the entire cast; instead of trying to charge me the same amount for the process to be repeated, they only charged me $35 to replace the entire cast. I was pretty impressed.
I will say, I was a huge fan of this vet about 2 years ago when my cat got really sick all of a sudden and they made it their mission to find out what was wrong. However, since then this place has gone down hill FAST!
The service and nursing staff disgust me! They were incredible rude to me and more importantly to my two cats on three occassions! The third time was the final straw. Many people, including myself, see their pets as their children and I was appalled with the way the staff was treating my cat. My cat is a laid-back kitty, but when at the vet and all the smells of other cats/dogs flips out, and I admit is difficult to handle. However, they knew this and said we would be able to see the doctor immediately before this was a problem - I waited 20 mins in the waiting room. Then when in the treatment/checkup room my cat was scared and hissing. The nurse looked at me and said (and I quote), "what do you want me to do with this thing". I looked at her and said "this is your job, put on gloves and continue the checkup". What is worst is that she handle my cat like it wasn't even a living being and was so cruel and mean towards it. Just because the cat was scared does not give a professional nurse the right to beahve this way, many pets do not like the vet. That was it - I explained this to the doctor and will NEVER go back to this place again.
It is really unfortunate how downhill this place went in two years...
Pros: The doctors are the only good thing about this place
Cons: the rudeness and cruelty of the service and nurse staff
I am a first time pet owner and still learning the swing of things. I havea 3 month old Maltese and she went to Montrose for her first visit. I met with the vet and she made me feel very comfortable and not stupid since this was my first pet. She was very thorough in her explanation of everything.
Two weeks later.....
My baby woke up with her left eye closed shut, well with me being a 1st timer I freaked out! I called Montrose and they fit me right in, as soon as we arrived we were seen. Again, the vet took the time to fully check her out and made me feel so much better about the situation. It turned out to be a scratched eye ball and pink eye!
I feel like I can call them any time for any questions no matter how big or small and that means the WORLD to me. Definitely see them!
Pros: Staff is super friendly and knowledgable, clean and fast!
Cons: Little pricey (but worth every penny)
Have used this vet for the past 7 years-through 9 cats and 2 dogs (two of whom I adopted from the clinic), they've seen it all and never have I received anything but the best treatment. Their parking lot IS bad and while not overtly expensive, they're definitely not the cheapest in town either, but for the best veterinarians and staff in Houston, this is a bargain for animal lovers. Even if it's a minor emergency, you can drop your cat/dog off on the way in and they'll see it during the day (and call you around 1), and if you're adopting a stray, the first examination is free. First rate all the way.
Almost a year ago I lost my cat Molly. Her illness was very mysterious and required 2 surgeries. Dr. Kazmerick worked her butt off to try to figure out what was wrong with Molly. She didn't even charge me for the second surgery when the 1st one didn't provide the answers we'd hoped for. She kept in constant communication with me and even made it possible for me to come in and out to visit Molly while she was still in her care...even on Sunday when the clinic is closed.
Dr. Kazmerick not only did everything she could to save Molly she was also so compassionate and caring to me. That meant so much. Molly was my best friend and she got that. When putting Molly to sleep became inevitable she even came in on her day off to be there for me. She CRIED, yes CRIED herself, because she was so upset that she couldn't save Molly.
A few weeks after Molly died Dr. Kazmerick made a ceramic momento of Molly's paw, painted it, and sent it to me with a sweet note that I still have. I cannot say enough good things about this kind woman or the clinic. God bless people like Dr. Kazmerick who do a job that I could never do and help people like me who love their pets.
As long as I live in the Houston area I will always bring my pets to Montrose Vet Clinic. I trust these people completely.
Pros: Compassion, Knowledge
This is the best vet clinic I have ever been to. The doctors and techs are so nice and helpful. It is easy to get an appointment the same day if you need one.
Pros: caring vets, great hours, great service
Cons: high vet turnover
Every time I walk into the Clinic, the Receptionists greet me and my little ones with a warm smile :-) I never have to wait more than 5-10 minutes (significantly better than other Vets I've been to) and every Doctor here is knowledgeable and great at what they do! I have 2 dogs and 3 cats, and they all love the Doctors! When you take your animal to the Vet and they don't shake, you know you have got a Winner! Some may complain the prices are too high, but they are quite reasonable, and the MOST important part is that these Doctors are the BEST in town! Your animals will be taken care of every single time & with love! I would absolutely recommend this Clinic to everyone who LOVES their babies (aka- animals)! Especially Doctor McDaniel, she is just a natural with the little ones!!
Pros: Doctors are a "natural" and your animals will be treated like family!
Cons: NONE :0)
Dr. McDaniel and her staff have always provided quality service and care. When my vet retired and we did not have my pet's records they offered to find them for me by calling around to other vets. I received a call a short time after letting me know they were located. I feel i always come away well educated and informed and receive a follow up call for any procedures or conditions. I believe there is a level of competency which is hard to find and worth the cost.
Pros: Competency; kindness with pet; consultative
Cons: Parking lot
I am surprised to read some of the reviews listed. I just recently moved to the houston area and was referred to the Montrose Vet by several people at the local dog park. My experiance there was amazing!! Yes parking isnt the best but we are also in downtown, so expected. The Receptionist were so helpful and they even contacted my old veterinary clinic and had all the information of what my pet needed before I had gotten to my appt. I was blown away to see the amount of clients that were coming in and out, the phones ringing off the wall, and everyone of the staff members smiled and seemed absolutely in control of everything. I was immediately greeted as I walked in. Sitting in the lobby waiting to see the vet, this clinic has several awards posted in the lobby for being the BEST by readers of the local newspaper the Houston Press for several years now. When I got into my appointment, the nurse was soo informative and was nothing but loving to my Tucker, 5 yr old blk lab. I was so impressed by the nurse that I actually thought he was the doctor until he introduced himself. Then, Dr McDaniel came in! I she was sooo intellegent, by far the best vet that i have ever met! My experiance was by far amazing, the nurses, receptionist, it all.
Pros: Friendly/Loving, Well educated staff, Great service!!
Cons: Cant say I can think of any, parking???
I agree with the others one stars completely. The front desk and technicians are very unfriendly. I took my dog for the initial visit, which was OK. Obviously, nobody said any cool thing about him or offered him a cookie... he was nervous and they looked at him as if he was annoying them. Unbelievable! He had to be neutered and -my mistake- I didn't ask how much it was going to cost. They charged $490! In addition, when I went to pick him up after surgery, I had to ask tons of questions about how to care of him during post-surgery since nobody will tell any thing! It was just "pay and leave us alone!" I asked some of my colleagues for a new good vet that shows some care since I'm not planning taking him there again.
Cons: bad service - extremely expensive
We're use to being across the street from our vet,who loved our dog and would always run out to give him treats when we walked by.We were in shock our first experience, walked in the door and ten people were behind the desk, and nobody acknowledged us. Finally after getting some-ones attention we sat and filled out paper work, nobody paid any attention to our dog and i am sorry but he is the cutest thing, who wouldn't love him? We got the feeling nobody there liked animals it was very sad. We got him some shots and flea medicine, pretty pricey. When we got home they left a message saying they forgot to charge us for half his shots, and we can pay when we bring him back to have minor surgery. The next few days i got his paperwork in the mail, and not only did they have the wrong color of my dog,but the wrong breed.I work thirteen hour days and really don't have the time to call and tell someone how to do there job. Need-less to say i called and argued with the receptionist because she did not have my dogs breed in the computer system nor could she type it in. Why would we want our dog registered as the wrong breed, and are you kidding me, your a vet,you should have all breeds listed! Then we took him to get minor surgery and ,by this point my clients and i have discussed the bad service they also experienced. Anyhow they said to be at the vet no later than 7:30 am we arrived about 7:15 and the doors were locked, a vet tech walking a dog said you have to wait till 7:30 along with a group of people and there dogs piling up.I was sick to my stomach the entire day i had left my baby there. Went to pick him up anxiously waited for 20 minutes again being ignored. Paid another pricey bill picked up more flea medicine, only to see when i got home it had expired. Called the vet they said it doesn't expire, well don't print it on the box then .Would you just take a chance giving your child expired medicine? We will not go back ever and found a better vet ,trust the bad reviews.
Pros: um? can't think of any
Cons: Front desk, prices, unattentiive
I called with an emergency situation an hour before Montrose Vet Clinic closed for the day, but, even though I'd been a long-term client with a number of critters and I'd spent thousands of dollars there, I was told they couldn't fit me in. Combined with the lousy front-desk employees, who spend more time chatting amongst themselves than helping clients, it was an easy call to switch vets. I'm now at The Heights which is significantly cheaper (more than $20 per visit) and more helpful and caring. The Heights staff routinely calls to check up on my critters after they've been in for a visit.
Cons: Bad staff, not caring
Up until recently, I was very happy with this clinic, but there is one vet that seems less than helpful. I have encountered this on a few occasions & decided to find another vet. They are very good for spaying & neutering (& they'd better be, considering what I paid), but beyond that, I've been very disappointed. I end up wasting my time & money, then I have to do my own research in order to find better treatment options for my pets. For the complicated stuff, they mostly prescribe rimadyl & send you home.
Pros: spay/neuter procedures are good
Cons: price, not well-informed about treatment options for more complex ailments
It distresses me to hear anything but glowing recommendations about this clinic. These docs are the best I have ever encountered. They literally saved my dog's life, and treat most of my neighbor's animals. They are gracious, never too busy to explain the smallest detail to me, kind and compassionate. I read a complaint about a 30 minute wait! Good grief! Are you kidding? On a busy day with no appointment-big deal! Seriously, I would not take my pets anywhere else-EVER. I love these people. The clinic is large, clean, friendly, and has the most up to date equipment. I care about my babies, and they deserve the best! Thanks Montrose Vet Clinic!!!
Pros: Extremely competent, warm, friendly, compassionate.
It is no wonder that this clinic has been voted best vet clinic in Houston multiple times! The doctors are knowledgeable and kind. They take their time to explain in detail. I really like that they will refer to the specialists when needed. They are busy- but if you ask to talk to the doctor, they will find the time to see you. I have been taking my 2 dogs and 1 cat there for 7 years. They have seen us through multiple emergencies and illnesses. I have referred all my friends there, and will continue to. They are not cheap- but the level of care is worth it. These docs will do what it takes to keep them healthy. Oh, and I love that they are active in the community. I can't say enough wonderful things about this place!
Pros: knowlegeable, kind, clean
Cons: parking lot is small
I went to this clinic one time and will never go back. First of all, they kept me and my very nervous dog waiting for 30 minutes in the waiting roon. Then my dog's entire exam and treatment was performed in the back room. I like very much to be a part of my dog's plan of care, however, at this clinic I felt pushed to the side. The Vet I saw had the worst bed side manner I have ever encountered. My husband and I both thought that she didn't even like animals by the way she was acting. If you love your pet this is not the place for you!!!
The people who work here are probably the friendliest people i've ever encountered when it comes to a vet clinic. Valerie is so nice, and [i'm pretty bad with names] everyone else is VERY nice and they get excited to see your pup [or cat].
Pros: FRIENDLY staff, intelligent and skilled vets
