Settled at the edge of Midtown Houston at W. Gray and Waugh, The Tavern on Gray is home to the longest bar in Texas and possibly the longest Happy Hour. Expect crowds of sports fans and after-work happy hour groups enjoying the large projector screens and unobstructed views of over 100 TVs. There's always a game on our screens and those inclined to more participatory pleasures can play darts, ping pong, trivia, pool or even foosball. On Monday nights, the bar offers $.35 wings and Tuesday is karaoke night, where customers can enjoy their 5 minutes of fame in front of a friendly audience. Wednesdays and Sundays are Midtown Houston's favorite steak night, with live music on the patio. The Tavern offers a great daily menu, with a twist on traditional bar food. Hassle free parking and a great atmosphere make Tavern on Gray easy headquarters for the Midtown Houston and Heights dwellers.

Editorial by Citysearch

In Short
A Union Jack above the ivy-covered entrance pays homage to the traditional English pub. Inside, affable patrons dish lively conversation while watching sports (think American football, as opposed to the European variety) on one of many TVs. Cozy booths are an added bonus. Crowds may be lured here for spirits and sports, but other diversions include an Internet jukebox that plays more than 130,000 songs, a raucous karaoke night (every Tuesday) and good pub grub.

Key Points

  • Houston's Best Steak Night
  • Great Outdoor Seating
  • Over 100 TV's

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - Wash down the Texas burger or plate of hot wings with import beers from Germany, Ireland, Japan and the Netherlands, among other countries.
  2. Look Good - No cut-off shirts or tank tops allowed.

Great place to watch the game

by Kelly D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,048

One of the best places in town to watch the big game, but you darn well better get their early or you'll be out of a parking spot and a seat. If you have no heart for sports, you can play pool, darts or golden tee. Also has some of the best bar food in town - the Tavern burger is a force to be reckoned with, order it as it comes, there's some kind of alchemy involved in their particular combo of toppings.

Great Steak on Weds & Sunday, Tuesday NTN Trivia Contest

by Seaamigo

They grill steak on an open pit every Tuesday and Sunday. The quality is excellent and very rerasonable. Draft beer is good and cold and the taps are kept clean - I've never had a flat beer or one that tasted bad. There is a good draft selection as well. If you like NTN Trivia or poker, they have it and will turn it on for you, even during a big sports night.

Downside to that "Longest Bar in Texas" thing: The bartenders need roller skates to keep up and it's easy to be forgotten when the staff is light. Tip: Go when Shannon's working. She's super friendly and takes excellent care of her customers.

Pros: Friendly Place with Cold Beer & Good Prices

Cons: The rap videos in the line-up don't fit the crowd

Good grub...cheap pints... dishy birds.

by KVonnegut

Say mate, if you are going for an all night bender, make this your first stop. Why? They have smashing grub (steak nites on Wednesday & Sundays) and cheap pints ($2 and a sixer for a pitcher). Of course they have other spirits as well to help you get bladdered. Their service is excellent (oh yeah the waitresses/bartenders are all dishy and that right there is worth a visit). On some nights however, it can get a wee bit busy so your drinks/orders would be a wee bit delayed but it's still good. The customers are diverse (you wont feel out of place) and very casual, it's quite perfect for group parties or just hanging out with your mates. So give it a burl!

Pros: happy hours specials, steak night, hot bartenders/waitress

Cons: parking

Tavern on Gray - great summer spot

by J2929

Tavern on W. Gray is a nice spot for a cold beer. The atmosphere is much nicer than some of the uppity spots in mid-town. When it cools off, the patio area is a great place to hang out as well.

Pros: cheap beer and relaxed atmosphere

Cons: Parking lot could use an upgrade

GREAT BAR

by WEM

I go to this bar all the time with my wife. We love the video poker and trivia. The staff and all of the managers are very friendly. The steak on Wed. & Sundays is amazing! It's enough for 2 people! This is my favorite bar and I will always return while I live inside the loop. We go there about 2-3 times a week and we will continue to do so!

Pros: Huge outside bar/ friendly staff

Cons: Can't think of any

Grill Masters of West Gray

by IMan

The Tavern offers $6 pitchers and reasonably priced well drinks. It's an informal atmosphere, and the service staff are friendly, albeit stretched for attention at peak hours. However, the amazing find about the Tavern are the offerings from their grill. Ribs marinated in a roux for 24 hours, then grilled to perfection. ($9 for a plate that feeds 2, with a healthy serving of their spicy potato salad) Rib eyes marinated in a trifecta of OJ, Soy Sauce and Pineapple juice for a brief period to lend acidity, then grilled with secret spice rub. I have brought friends here from out of State, and they have been blown away. The Tavern is my first stop for a convenient drink and succulent grill delights. And make sure you speak to Brian and try and extract some recipes from him.

Pros: Excellent ribs and steaks

Cons: Parking lot designed with HUMVEES in mind

Great Local Bar

by SMM1

We regularly go to this bar. They have $6.00 domestic pitchers from 3-8! On Wed. and Sundays for $15 you get a 16 ounce Ribeye and a fully loaded baked potatoe cooked on a charcoal grill! We always split it and it is plenty! They have great staff and a busy video poker game and trivia game every night. This is not a poshy place but if you want to chill out, drink beer and eat good food this is your place.

Pros: Great Staff/ Amazing Steak

Cons: Needs new carpet. :)

Great Bar! Great location! Great Steak!

by FlyFlinger

The Tavern is a great bar. I you like really loud dance music and pretentious people looking at each other than maybe this bar isn't for you. But if you are over that stage and are looking for a good priced bar with something for everyone the Tavern is a great option. The patio is huge, the menu is great (go for the Lucky dog!) the steak night is awesome. The Tavern even has ping pong and foosbal. Tuesday night is Karaoke (I don't sing but it brings a good fun crowd in). There are a something like 100 TV's which helps when sports are a concern. My favorite thing about the Tavern is space. There is plenty of parking space so you won't get frustrated driving around for 20 minutes before you can actually park (This seems to be a trend in midtown). Also, because the bar is so big you will never feel like you are crammed in shoulder to shoulder with other people. (I hate that) I saw in some other reviews where people had to deal with the dress code. This is true that they don't allow baggy pants or plain white t-shirts in. There may be something about hats too but I'm not sure. I had to go home and change recently because I went in with a white undershirt on. I admit I was a little caught off gaurd but went home to change anyhow since my friends were already sitting at the bar. When I came back they were joking that an undershirt was probably a little under par for anywhere besides the gym. They were probably right about that one. All in all not a big deal to me. I highly reccomend the Tavern as a great neighborhood bar and grill where you can go as wild or as tame as you want and have a great time nevertheless.

Pros: Pool, Darts, Karaoke, Steak nights, tons of parking

Cons: Steak night isn't every night

Great service......Wonderful atmosphere

by mandocomando

Everytime I go to the Tavern I have a great time! I love the pitcher specials and the free popcorn.....I see that some people do not like the service but I have been going to the Tavern for 3 years now and always have great service. I ask for the same waitress everytime, her name is Ashley and she will take good care of you. I will continue to attend and love the new RIB NIGHT on Friday's.

Pros: Parking and Servive

Cons: None yet!!

I've never had any credit card problems at the Tavern. It sounds like some people are new to how debit cards show up twice on your online statement and then correct themselves. Thats everywhere. Anyway Its my favorite bar I go out a lot. Cheers

Won't be back

by jjdavid

Can't say that me or my friends will every be back. I showed up there with 3 girlfriends and we had trouble getting a drink. The bartenders that night were all female (always a plus) but were only serving the men. That would explain the fact the bar was pretty much 95% males. When they finally noticed me and my friends we all ordered cocktails and a round of bullblasters. I'm not sure what they added to our jagermeister but it was NOT Redbull. They were the most terrible bullblasters I've ever had. None of us even really drank the shots, and after that we all left. The drinks price was absolutely outragous considering the fact that they didn't even give us what we asked for. My friends and I were some of the only chics in there and we won't be back!

Pros: Didn't see any

Steak Night is GREAT food! Service was fair.

by baylorwarren

Not sure about why the service was so slow for others - I have been twice now on Wednesday "Steak" Night, and the service was fair to good. The steaks were GREAT!! I don't like the fact that they don't all work as a team. You have to pay separate tabs for the steak as for the beer, and if a waitress visits you while eating your steak, and you order beer from her... its another tab to pay off. Other than that, I'd say find a seat on a Wednesday and enjoy!! I'll be back!

This is Texas, not New York City

by mtrcyclemark

I agree with all the negative comments posted, very, very, very poor service. The bartenders especially are arrogant & unattentive. The whole premise of "Tavern" is transitory, a place of social interaction & good times. That begins with the employees! There is not one iota of appreciation conveyed to patrons for their business, more or less any friendliness offered. I just sat there, empty glass, waiting long past a reasonable amount of time while the bartendress waltzed back & forth as if I wasn't even there. And then, when I try to be friendly I get a vibe back as if I were a player trying to take somebody home! And that is so not me or my style, I'm just a friendly guy. Why in the world do I need to go somewhere like this place after a hard day's work or on my free time?? Forget it! I shouldn't be treated poorly because of others not tipping, they should be remembered & THEN treated poorly. I'm a great tipper unless treated poorly, so no, I didn't tip well. Maybe if the service were better they would get tipped, the vicious cycle would die & the world would be a better place!

Come on Tavern on Gray, get it together... keep Houston a great place to live.

Pros: The place is really groovey, parking seems to be plentiful.

Cons: Why do I need to go to a place to be treated like that?

Don't go!!!

by daringaaron

This is a place my friends and I frequently visit. But not anymore!!!! Our waitress was very rude. We paid our tab with a credit card. We were going to leave her a cash tip. So, she proceded to come over and tell us that we stiffed her on her tip(although I had her cash tip in my hand ready to hand to her) and that she informed the next waitress not to come over and serve us. We spend alot of money there. I guess someone else with better service and nicer waitstaff will get it now.

Pros: Great place to watch a game.

Cons: Horrible service and rude waitstaff.

Worst Service

by 166it166

The first time I tried out The Tavern the service was unfriendly from the moment I sat at the bar. I went back 2 more times (with a group of friends) and each time the service got worse, downright rude. The bartenders expect to be tipped well before they provide you any service at all. If you tip on the basis of their service, they have the manager come over and tell you to leave. I will never go back and I tell everyone to do the same. Afterward, I checked other reviews here on Citysearch and everyone of them complained how bad the service was. Then a few weeks later, the reviews had been removed.

Pros: None

Cons: Service and Management

They remember

by newbish

Tips, Tips, Tips remember these people work on tips. Take it as a positive or a negative I think its positive. When I go to the Tavern I know I am going to get a good drink at a good price. Thats may be because they know I won't leave em with 4 bucks on a 60 dollar tab. Im not saying they are money hungry here but if they see you thowing down a quarter or something on a round of drinks you might be wating a bit longer for your next. A busy crowded bar creates busy bartenders and makes you hard to see if you cheap.

Pros: Barstaff, Good Drinks, Inexpensive

Posted 10/29/04

what tha ? was that?

by nonie

St. Patrick's Day at Tavern was horrible. Explain to me how you are going to charge $5 for guys and nothing for girls, then about an hour and a half later, jack the price up to $10 a person? Oh, and don't get me started on the stupid port o' potties. That was a nightmare. Women should not be able to go in as pairs. It was a mess, unless you are a college kid, then it's probably right up your alley.

Pros: nada, nada, nada

Cons: , service, drunken females

It's about time

by TheDoorman

I'm glad the Tavern on gray has finally stepped up to this site. Good times, good drink, and a decent family. Sometimes the service might be kinda slow but the view denies lack of talent. Plenty of activities to choose from (pool, trivia, golden tee, foosball, darts, ping pong, air hockey, megatouch and alcoholic consumption). A good place to start the night and just as good to end the night. Be careful where you park (there's a couple of restless neighbors who's only hobby is to have you towed. You'd swear they get a cut.) Anyway, relaxed atmosphere, but not too relaxed. The door nazi will seldom fold so make sure to bring your I.D. and leave your tank tops at home. Good times.

Pros: Relaxed atmosphere, 7 day happy hour, about 100 t.v.'s

Cons: Limited parking, Uncool neighbors
