In Short
Originally opened on South Congress in 1939, Hut's moved to its present location in 1969. With cozy booths and tables surrounded by paraphernalia-decked walls, it's known for doing diner food right. The All-American Buddy Holly elevates the common burger--American cheese, onions, pickles, lettuce and tomato--to new heights. Crispy onion rings and fries are a perfect salty accompaniment to the meal. A chocolate shake is a must, as is a dessert of two scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with hot fudge.

Odd place, great food.

by Alun T. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 11,603

Hut's serves great hamburgers, and great onion rings. A typically Austin establishment in every way, both good bad, Hut's is on 6th Street, which is one of the busier streets in downtown Austin, and has very, very little in the way of a parking lot. I always have to park on the street nearby, which often entails circling the surrounding blocks a few times. Once you get to the door, a wait almost certainly is in store for you - anything up to an hour and a half is certainly not unusual, especially on busy days. The food is great, though, and I wouldn't typically mind waiting up to about 45 minutes for it. The building itself is a little old and quite rough around the edges, so I'd recommend just focusing on chatting, enjoying the smells, and drooling over the huge selection of burgers available. If you haven't tried buffalo before, I'd recommend upgrading your patty to it - you won't be disappointed!

Yummy Burgers

by Anne J. | insider Insider | Rank: 16,442

This is a really fun place to go. The decor is nice, wait staff friendly. It's definitely an "Austin" type of place.

The menu is impressive and you definitely can get a burger made in ways I'd never think of on my own.

Parking isn't as bad as you might think given the downtown location.

Hut's Hamburgers is a must-do for out-of-towners! Great food in a particularly, "Austin" atmosphere. The intimate venue lends itself to wonderful moments with friends, family, coworkers or anyone just looking for a good meal! Highly recommend Huts!

Is Hut's the only hamburger joint in Austin? No. But it might as well be. Fantastic burgers, great sides, all reasonably prices. Very consistent here.

Good burger

by michael67

Went to Hut's with co-workers. I like my burgers simple: no sauces, with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle. This means I'm at odds with most people in Austin (but not Ft. Worth). I ordered a double burger and a side of fries and rings. The burger was good (but not great). The fries were burnt, as most places in Austin haven't figured out how to cook fresh cut fries without burning them. Onion rings were nothing to write home about.

Pros: Burger was good

Cons: Burnt fries

Don't order the chicken fried steak!

by GaryAustin

I have always ordered a hamburger, but yesterday felt like a chicken fried steak. They brought out the plate and it looked like a child's plate. I thought I might have accidentally ordered the child's portion as the chicken fried steak was about the same size and shape as a hamburger patty, just chicken fried. I couldn't believe it since this is Austin Texas and so many restaurants have very large chicken fried steaks. If you want to see waht a real chicken fried steak looks like, go to the City Cafe in Elgin, or to Nutty Brown in Dripping, but don't order it here. Stick to their hamburgers and fries. Huts's should be ashamed to even put it on the menu.

Pros: Harmburgers good

Cons: Chicken fried steak looks like a child's portion.

Average Burger

by jcm2136

We ordered the All American (regular burger; no gimmick sauces or anything). The burger was just average; only a little better than a Sonic burger, but 3x as pricey.

The meat was grassfed beef, but did not have much flavor. Small machine pressed patty. The bun was nothing special, and the toppings were old. Our salad was wilted, and the water was bad. Only Pro was good service and choice of beef.

If you want to try Austin's best burgers, go to #14? Cover 3, #2 Counter Cafe, or #37 Mighty Fine (yes, a chain). Discovered these through Texas Monthly's Best 50 burgers in the state edition.

Pros: Choice of beef

Cons: Only average burger

Over Acclaimed

by foodforethought

Huts is over acclaimed. The food is palatable but nothing special. I certainly wouldn't wait for a table; there are much better burgers to be had in Austin. I believe the rumours that Huts once earned its stellar reputation, but I suspect this place has been riding on its laurels for some time. The wait staff and management don't seem concerned about repeat business, and sadly, they have so many customers, they don't need to.

Pros: Nostalgic atmosphere

Cons: Mediocre food

Good burger, more of a "I'nm hungover and need some fries" kind of place

by shaft28

The burgers are good, but not great. Over all a fun spot that you can see why it is an institution in a college town. Location! They should be open until 3am everynight, bet they'd do great business.
Great atmosphere and in general place but don't expect the best burger ever (mind you it isn't bad).

Awesome tasty burgers

by waxx

A lot of burger joints overlook the quality of the patties. Most of them are too thin and lacking in flavor, concentrating too much on what goes on top of it. The first thing we noticed at Hut's was that the patties tasted like real meat with substance and flavor. The patties were also thick and juicy and cooked as ordered. Hut's has a wide variety of burgers, but also giving you the option to build your own burgers, making options Although our waiter recommended Hut's Favorite, the All American , and Ritchie Valens, we decided to try something different and ordered the Beach Boy Favorite and Alley-Oop with the addition of tomatoes. We finished our burgers quickly and were not disappointed. The onion rings, while tasty as well, were too thick and a bit overwhelming. We didn't order shakes this time, but we'll be back for sure to try that as well as other burgers and combinations.

AWESOME BURGERS!

by sephora_junkie

Me and my boyfriend visited Austin from Houston this weekend and this place was recommended as a great lunch spot. We only had to wait about 5 min for a seat, which i thought was going to be longer since it was so crowded. Our waitress was nice and the hamburger was out of this world. Now im wishing we had that place in Houston. We will for sure go back the next time we are in Austin.

Pros: Great food....the amount of food we got....

Cons: We didnt order the Onion Rings....

I love this place to death. They have the best burgers and milk shakes in town. Amazingly affordable, and I always leave there full. One time, our waiter even got our desert on him (me, my brother, and my aunt). The place is a little cluttered, but beacuse of that there is always something new to look at while you're waiting for your food.
Basically just great!

Pros: Great food, service. Great everything

Cons: Parking, usually busy

Great Veggie Burgers

by Clientsam

The Monday night special on veggie burgers makes this restaurant a weekly ritual. The Theta Special or the Chubby Chuck both top Hut's unique veggie patty with delicious hickory sauce, sandwiched between soft hamburger buns - yummy but messy. The service is fast, the waitstaff are nice, the atmosphere is "Austiny", and the drinks are huge so you never have to wait on a refill.

On the downside, the french fries are edible but not great, and it can be a little difficult to find a parking space close to the building.

Pros: veggie burgers, value, waitstaff, fast

Cons: parking, french fries, short straws

Hut's Hamburgers is the BEST!!! I love going there. I think they have one of the best burgers in town!! Even when there isn't a ton of waiters, they all try to make your experience good. I also love that they have flavors for the sodas like an old-fashioned hamburger joint. They have been there for ever and have tried to keep things as original as possible...very cool! A++++++++++

Pros: Awesome food!

Great veggie burger

by cameocr

As a vegetarian married to a carnivore it can be hard for us to find a restaurant we both love, but Hut's is just that. Their on site made veggie burger hits the spot every time, I always plan on trying a burger off the menu but the first one I tried was so good its hard to stray from it. The huge burger and heaping portion of fries is very filling, so share if you want room for dessert. I did branch out and try the veggie cheesy chilli fries and the whole table was able to enjoy the generous portion. The atmosphere is relaxed as a casual diner. Each time we go the wait staff has been attentive and speedy with food and drink refills.

Pros: Veggie Burgers, Menu Variety, Atmosphere

The Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by k24man

This is a great place if you want a monster buger! It's a small place with lots of austin character with amazingly fun service. There food is great and they have several options for a vegetarian fare. Huge burgers, great shakes. I wouldn't waste too much time on the onion rings-they were pretty peppery but everything else was so beyond delicious. We find any excuss to go into town for Hut's. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Pros: Great food, especially for vegetarians, and a fun place to go!

Cons: Onion rings weren't what I expected. (Don't let this stop you from going though)

Wonderful Veggie Burger, Great Atmosphere

by ciretose

As a vegetarian it is sometimes hard to find food out, but Hut's comes through in spades. Upon entry into the restaurant you are greeted with an eclectic Austin atmosphere. The waitstaff is very friendly, and quite attentive, and the food is even better. There are many choices for the vegetarian, and meat-eater alike. Their menu lists 20 hamburgers (any of which can be made with a veggie patty on request) along with many other options. I'd love to try everything on the menu, and comment on each item, but whenever I go I can't seem to get away from good old #20. The burger is so good that I can't persuade myself to order anything else.

I highly recommend Hut's. Their service is great, the food is even better.

Pros: Great staff, even better food!

Cons: The #20 is too good, I can't persuade myself to try anything new.

Great burgers, great service

by elloco76

Love this place! Been here a few times and it never fails to impress. The burgers are big, juicy and filling. Plus you can put pretty much anything on 'em. I got the bleu cheese burger with bacon and loved it. The fries are good too. The prices are more than fair and the portion sizes will have you loosening your belt. Bartenders are friendly and attentive and the selection of draft beer is pretty good too. Definitely give this place a shot.

Pros: Great food

Yummy Grease-Burger

by jnbruns

Coming from Lampasas and raised on Storm's Hamburgers, Hut's is the only thing that can get me off in the burger department. I love the Hut's Favorite, which is your classic, everything-on-it burger. The beef is served slightly under well, which is perfect. The fries are a dream, and the shakes aren't bad either. Parking is usually pretty negotiable.

Pros: Everything!

Cons: One time, I saw a pretty nasty waterbug crawling around the floor.

Nothing Special

by phutch1980

Great location and the diner atmosphere was interesting and funky without being too over the top. I had a Buddy Holly burger and onion rings. The burger was served a little under the advertised medium well, which was a good thing in my book. The right amount of grease and pretty flavorful, nothing special but not bad either. The onion rings were incredibly bland even after adding salt. I had about 2 of them and left the rest. There's not a lot to say about Hut's it's not bad, but just doesn't stand out in any meaningful way.

Best burger in Austin??? What a joke!!!

by rp4runner

I took the family to Hut's y esterday, and I'm amazed this place is rated the best burger in town. Our food was cold, service was horrific, and the rest of the staff was rude. I left thinking I would have been better off with a quarter pounder from McDonald's. I think the best burgers in Austin can be found at Houston's.

Pros: n/a

Cons: parking, service, cold food, cramped seating

the nostalgia of hut's is not worth the poor flavor or quality

by cletus13

ok. I think we all know there are better burgers in Austin. You only love huts for the novelty, or perhaps your taste buds are not functioning. The reason they offer to put so much junk on your burger is because they are gross and flavorless. My cheese was gross and had quite possibly gone bad. the onion rings are doughy and gross and one out of ten fries was crispy, the rest of the basket left something to be desired. Huts will not go out of business because you stop going. It is still going to be packed at lunch time with old people and yuppies that haven't learned their lesson yet. Do yourself a favor and wait until casino or Jackalope open at 4. If you can't wait P Terry's offers a much tastier burger and you won't have to wait for you underachiving waiter to bring it to you when he gets around to it. btw hut's is super expensive for what they offer 25$ before tip. No dessert just two burgers fries and rings, no flavor except too much stale black pepper. Save your money.

Pros: can't really think of any

Cons: everthing!!!!!

by luzygirl

Such a good place to go eat a hamburger. They give you 20 options on how to eat a burger and you can still mix it up. Onion rings are the size of your face. Fries are also big, if you are a fry lover. Gotta try this place out!

Second best burger in Austin

by davebuoy

The best is Dirty Martins, hands down. Huts does a good job tho. The one thing I'd suggest to everyone is to order the burger the way you want it, and not the way the one you choose comes. Most are just to damn messy. DO NOT order the chicken fried steak, trust me on this. It is a burger place, stick with what they do.

Pros: Order the way you want, not the way they offer

Cons: Stick with the burgers

Best Burger Anywhere.

by jhondough

Ok, so it's not snazzy, poppy, or jumpy. Some may call it a "Greezy Spoon". People may say Hype this, or Hype that. All I know is theres this wendy's comercial that has these people kicking a tree, then this guy that says he wants a "Hot Juicy Burger". long story short, the opening three words of this discription on CitySearch Are "HOT JUICY BURGER" and thats what they serve. In My Opinion, Delicious hot and juicy burgers are the one constant in my photo albums. They seem to hold a Texan together. Bar-B-Que, Beer, these are the words of a hungry man, and a hungry man deserves a hot juicy burger.

Still the Best Burgers in Town

by austinrveu

I eat at Hut's about once every other month and there burgers are always delicious. I still have yet to find a burger in Austin that is as consistently juicy as Hut's. They deliver a unique atmosphere, rich in Austin history. It is certainly not a quiet spot, but this is not a problem because you can always expect a busy, noisy experience. Now, I cannot recommend anything other than burgers. They are just too good to pass on...though the "Chicken Fried Steak" is pretty good. My burger of choice is the "Hut's Favorite." Top it off with a refreshing cherry sprite or vanilla coke, some almost perfect fries, and you have an outstanding classic American meal.

Pros: Burgers, fries

Cons: Parking

GREASE PIT

by macscruff

I heard these were good, so I tried them. LOL. What a mess. I really dont understand why Austin thinks these grease nuggets are good. I really felt like a burger this day, thought I would have a good one. When this thing came out I almost laughed outloud. I had one bite and threw that thing away. I left shaking my head totally confused by the hype. I ended up driving to Carl's Jr. in San Antonio. Sure its a fast food joint, but even so, it beats Huts Grease Pit hands down!

Not impressed at all. Why an Austin favorite????

by rockelita

My husband and I ate here a few months ago. We were pretty new to Austin and just came upon Hut's. We eat burgers very often and were excited to try a new place. The burgers here were NOT GOOD. I am usually fair about restaurants and criticizing their food, but I could get a better burger anywhere else. Our burgers were below average, very dry. The shakes are pretty good, but that is hard to mess up. We later learned that this place won Austin's favorite burger one year, and we shocked. Granted, the place is very "Austin-y" and has pretty good service, I would not return here willingly.

Pros: cool restaurant feel, pretty good service, fast

Cons: burgers!

Lives up to the hype for the most part

by ohyeahlach

Took the kids here and it was a good choice. Friendly service, nice selection of burgers. Fries were pretty good and the burgers were HUGE. No need for the double if you're an average Joe. Tasty fries but the onion rings were still raw (not fried long enough). The batter wasn't that hot either. All of our burgers were very good though. We will return for sure.

Downside: No kid menus & everything is ala carte. Oh, and CANNED mushrooms on the burgers, ugh!

Pros: Great burgers, service

Cons: Canned mushrooms

Doesn't live up to the hype

by thun

My wife loves this place, but I still don't get it, even after going multiple times. The burgers aren't really anything special, and despite all of the different "specialty" burgers, most of the condiments are your typical burger additions...pickles, mustard, onions, mushrooms, chili, etc. As much as I love burgers, I've found myself ordering other items from the menu (like catfish), which also aren't anything special. For a better burger, try somewhere like Freddie's, or heck, your own backyard.

by starlight1384

I am new to the area from Houston, and on a whim, my husband and I decided to try Hut's. The location is cool, and the inside is very diner-like. I can see why it is so popular, but we were not impressed with the burgers. The fries were cold and soggy too. I have had many better burgers at many other places before. We were hungry, and it was a cool place to go and get a quick bite to eat, but I wouldn't ever wait in line to eat there. I don't know if Austin just has different tastes than Houston burger places, but Hut's was nothing special at all.

Good Burgers, But...

by jcorgidog

I don't understand the raves. True, the burgers are very good. They come hot and juicy. But anyone that says that these burgers are any better than Fuddruckers is dreaming. Take a Fuddruckers restaurant, take away 70% of the floorspace, cram people in by the elbow, put a U.T. cap on everyone, and you've got a Hut's. Also, the hot fudge used on their ice cream is kind of weird. It comes lukewarm and has a strange gummy texture. The giant honking onion rings are nothing special.

Pros: hot, juicy burgers

Cons: crowded, poor parking, loud
