The Scene
Frenchy Creuzot's unassuming walk-up operation located a couple blocks away from the University of Houston's main campus has been a culinary institution since the late 1960s. UH students, neighborhood residents and devotees from 30 miles away wait patiently for their orders. There are a few picnic tables under the aluminum awning for those who wish to eat on the premises, but it's a pretty spartan arrangement. This has been a favorite hangout for Houston Rockets after practice.

The Food
Cayenne-flecked, lick-your-fingers-good fried chicken anchors the simple menu, either by the piece or with side-order options that include spicy red jambalaya, soulful collard greens, dirty rice, and red beans and rice. The subtle, smoky sausage is almost as exceptional as the chicken.

Key Points

  • Fried Chicken, Southern Creole
  • Sandwiches and Desserts
  • Full Catering

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - Desserts include a knockout bread pudding and on special days, peach cobber that'll have you sighing with satisfaction.

One of a kind!

by Dee F. | insider Insider | Rank: 12,847

Frenchy's fried chicken has a reputation as the very best friend chicken in Houston. People drive a very long way to visit the original restaurant! The chicken is everything was rumored to be and the sides are delicious!

New Frenchy's on FM1960

by fmdog44

A new Frenchy's opened recently and I ordered red beans & rice (dry and tasteless), shrimp etouffe (good), dirty rice (tasteless) and chicken (thin battered and greasy) . Very disappointed in veiw of all the raves. I'll take Popeye's and KFC over Frenchy's any day.

Pros: Etouffe

Cons: Chicken is greasy

Gheto fried chicken

by coog78

As a UH alumni, I tell you this is a Houston institution! Yep, you'll wait a while if you come during the rush, just like Niko Niko's or Thelma's. But all good things come to those to wait! This is the best fried chicken in the world. Chains are put to shame. The biscuits are also very awesome. How many times I came here doing college is ridiculous. Although eating fried chicken actually shows up on me now, a trip to Frenchy's every so often is a must!

No inside dining!

by htown2000

After reading all the rave reviews, went to my nearest one off of Tidwell and 45. I've never seen a restaurant where u got to line up outside. (No inside dining) I guess if it rains u just get wet...interesting concept. Its either that or drive thru. Chicken was good but a little pricy. I got a 10 piece mix & 2 sides and ran me $20. A little pricy considering chains like Popeyes and KFC. (I thought it should have been cheaper since they cut cost in overhead - ie inside dining) Chicken was good, but not any better than popeyes or KFC. Sides were average.

Cons: Stand in line outside to order.....????

Great Chicken

by kattywhompas

I heard about Frenchy's for a few years before I tried it. The chicken was good, but I still like Church's better. It's best to get there early, especially on Sunday before the church crowd gets out.

Pros: drive through window

Cons: gets super busy

Frenchy's Chicken

by latinatexas

Oh my God! I drive 80 miles once a week to get this chicken and you know gas is 3.50 a gallon. I must say the chicken is down home cooking chicken! Also, the cabbage you have to drive I am serious. Everytime I go to this place the drive thru line flows into the streets! You may wait 30 minutes or more in line but the chicken is well worth it. Also, the windown line is long too. If you want to eat there you muse sit outsidde on picnic tables. The best location is 3919 Scott it is the orginal location in 3rd ward off Scott...............45S and exit Scott...........This building is hood but you will love the food! This is a must try!

Pros: Best Damn Chicken the World

Cons: Long lines slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Best Fried Chicken EVER!

by ms_liz_ms

Love this place! Everytime I'm in the neighborhood, or someone from the neighborhood come to visit me, I beg to go there. I don't care how long the line is. Sometimes it wraps all around the rest. and out into the street. It's worth it! Awsome chicken, yummy seasoned fries, and you gotta get a large strawberry soda to go with. The jambalya is so good too. Keep in mind that all Frenchy's are not the same. But this location is one of the originals. Mmmm hungry just thinking about it.

Pros: Best chicken ever!

Cons: always long lines, can't eat there unless u want to sit on a picnic table on the patio

Houston's best, perfect for pre-game meals

by NSmithHouston

I heard about Frenchy's forever before I finally tried it... at 1 a.m. after burning a few trees! Needless to say it was the best fried chicken I've ever had and I haven't been back to Popeye's since! The Scott Street store is a legend for deserving reasons and it's the perfect place to grab a meal before watching a game on the UH campus. There are always lines, but the employees have always been friendly. Order the King Special and fill up. Remember to eat your Frenchy Fries first, though-- they're seasoned to perfection but they get cold and stale fast. The red beans and rice are also incredible. Do yourself a favor and get some Frenchy's tonight!

Pros: Ultimate Fried Chicken

Cons: Moderate wait times, shady 'hood

When you need a "fried food fix"

by marcomman

As has been mentioned before, there are no immitations when it comes to Frenchy's fried chicken. Simply the best.

PS Remember that they only take credit cards for orders over $10.00. (read below - lol)

Pros: It's the best "fast food" fried chicken in Houston!

Cons: The wait.

Worth the wait!

by mcurfiss

I just had my first chicken dinner from Frenchy's, and it is the real deal! greasy, crispy, perfectly golden fried pieces of juicy chicken. the french fries were average but the seasoning they put on them is YUMMY! the biscuits were perfectly buttery with just a taste of honey on top, ono! and the cornbread was soft and sweet. DEFINITELY try the strawberry soda.. like creme soda with strawberry!

Pros: great chicken, great bread, great soda

Cons: long line, need new location, they don't dip everything in batter

Absolutely Appalled!

by houstondiner11

I am absolutely appalled! My friend said they have the best chicken so I went for lunch. After waiting in the drive-thru for 25 mins the cashier tells me she will not take my Visa for my bill of $4.23. She said there is a $10 min on cards. I searched and found $3. I told the cashier and she put my bag aside. I told her that I didn't know this rule as it was my 1st time there. I also told her that there is no sign stating rules. Had there been a sign, I would not have wasted 25 mins in line. I asked for the manager. The manager did not want to tell me herself. Finally, the manager came to the window and said thats the rule. Management clearly does not care about customers nor do they care about their reputation.

Pros: None

Cons: Horrible Service

TEXAS' GREATEST FAST FOOD JOINT...PERIOD

by soadnirvana

There are no immitations when it comes to Frenchy's fried chicken. The mere knowledge that they don't advertise is depressing enough, but then again... do they really need to? At any time of the day lines will be all the way out in the street, halfway to Old Spanish Trail. The food is really that good. I'm not too fond of the cornbread, but its acceptable. Maybe I'm just used to Jiffy brand. Forget Kentucky Fried, forget Popeye's.. Remember Frenchy's.

Pros: AMAZING FOOD

Cons: NONE, Not much room to sit

Great tastin' chicken

by dfalcon75

The place is located near the University of Houston across from Houston Fire Station 25. You will not find better fried chicken in the Houston area. I recommend getting the King's special a pepper and a strawberry soda. If you save any room the sweet potato pie is great too. Many people say that the staff can be blunt...just be nice to the ladies and they'll be nice to you. I highly recommend this place.

Pros: Inexpensive, Great food

Cons: Parking, Lines can get long

by babyp

if you want some good tastin chicken you really need to go to frenchy's. To me frenchy's has the best chicken in Houston. Just order the 5 piece special w/ jalepenos and a strawberry soda and you will be good. And the good thing about them is they're inexpensive

Pros: chicken, inexpensive, french fries

Chicken w/ a side of Attitude

by Melly_Gonzalez

Nestled in Historic Third Ward next to our beloved University of Houston, (Go Coogs) lies the mecca of those earnest pilgrims seeking fried chicken enlightment: Frenchy's.
The best time to go is after Mass on a Sunday, and treat yourself to the Frenchy's Feast, a whopping five pieces of succulently seasoned chicken, served with Frenchy Fries and a honey butter biscuit and a jalapeño if you like. This is Southern fried chicken at it's best, as only Houstonians can do.

Pros: Exceptional product, Historic area, proximity to UH

Cons: Hard to park, homeless people, wait in drive-thru

Creole Flava

by cedelady

I have been going to Frenchy's every since I was a little girl. I Love It! The people there are a little slow getting you your food. The food is already done they just have to put it into a box. The chicken is awesome, the creole sausage sandwich is really good and the sweet potato pie. Frenchy's has got his going on. I wish they would open another location.

Pros: Food is really good, Ok Parking

Cons: No inside seating, Crowded, service is slow

I hurt myself!

by swhite

I love love love Popeyes...but when I want something that reminds me of my grandma's house on a Sunday after church...when we were still slaves (joke)...I go to Frenchy's on Scott. The 5 wing special is AMAZING!!! The way to do it is get the special, 2 jalapenos, and a red (strawberry) drink. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!
