I came in with no appt and was having my hair washed within 5 minutes. She asked what I wanted and she even asked me to clarify that she got the right message. A teacher walked by and the student asked for her advice before she started cutting! The cut was slow... but I thought that was great since it was obvious that she was being very cautious. She made sure it looked alright to me and then - apparently according to procedure - she got a different teacher to approve the completed cut. He checked it and my stylist even talked to me a little about maintenance of the cut! Time for payment? The stylist gave me a check ($5 for a haircut!) and I brought it to the front, where I gladly tipped well over 15% for a superb cut. I've had similar experiences in other salons - for at least six times the price.

I have to admit, my requested cut wasn't especially difficult, so a student was probably better able to satisfy me. But, because they're graded and they have instructors around all the time, I would go back no matter what cut I wanted. If you're super-particular about your hair, you could probably ask for an advanced student (some have tags that say 1000+ hours). I don't know that I'll ever go to a pricey salon again...

I have been going to Baldwin's for years and I think it's the best kept secret for haircuts. Their haircuts are only $5 and they compare well to the best haircuts from salons in Austin. You can ask for an experienced student if you are unsure about hair school cuts, too.

They have remodeled the school and it looks almost like a nice salon. The students are friendly and Rick is the best manager around. Make sure to say hi to him when you go in! In fact, I think I am going for a haircut there tomorrow. Absolutely a better deal than any of the discount hair places.

I received tons of compliments on my last haircut, and when I told these people I had paid $5 (plus a tip) for it at Baldwin Beauty Schools, they were shocked. I have had friends and co-workers go since then, and all of them have been pleased. It is true, you could have a true beginner cutting your hair, and some of them are very cautious. It's a little nerve wracking to have someone that looks afraid while they're cutting. However, I've never had a bad experience with a beginning or advanced student. And all haircuts are "inspected" and if needed fixed by instructors. It's a great deal really, especially if you're brave and you're tired of paying close to $100 for a cut.

PROS: price, friendly environment
CONS: hours

This place may not be high calibar, but don't let the beauty school scare you away. People get graded on your hair and if you aren't satisfied, their professional teacher will satisfy you. I go in there to get a trim and it costs five dollars! The personality of your stylist can definitely vary. I've had really shy, unsure ones but also outgoing, fabulous students! Don't let them scare you. Plus, it's really cheap.
