I was visiting on business and stopped in at the Hula Hut for a business meeting. It's right on the lake and the atmosphere was great. I had the fish tacos and was blown away with the mango salsa. Very good stuff!

Whenever I visit my sister and her family in Austin, we always end up at the Hula Hut. It reminds me Hawaii or some tropical place. The food is good and reasonably priced!

Hula Hut is one of Austin's greatest restaurants. The location on the lake is great and each entree is more than enough for each person. The patio bar is great to hang out and have a few drinks.

PROS: GREAT FOOD, LOCATION, AND PRICES
CONS: USUALLY A LONG WAITING LIST, BUT WORTH THE WAIT.

This is my favorite restaurant of all time. The burritos are excellent. The margaritas are even better. My favorite is the jalapeno ranch sauce. You can order a side of it to dip your chips in. There is a great outdoor seating area. It is very relaxing in the summer. The only bad part of going here is the wait. I have waited well over and hour to get a table.

Hula Hut combines Mexican food with a Polynesian theme. The result is a unique menu full of delicious choices. My favorite is the Grilled Hawaiian Chicken dish.

This is a great place for a semi-casual date. The atmosphere is laid back and relaxed, and it looks out on Lake Austin for a beautiful view.

I love the atmosphere here because it's fun and unique. We've gone here several times and every time the waiters and waitresses were friendly and service was good. I like the food, but wish the menu would expand with a few more healthy options. But it's delicious and I recommend dining here.

Just one small criticism: the hosts we've encountered have a bit of an attitude, as though we're entering an upscale establishment and should consider ourselves lucky they're allowing us in, and it seems so out of place for Austin. We moved here from Orange County, CA to get away from that very attitude, so it was strange to see it here at a casual restaurant.

Mmm mmm! Every time I've been here it's been absolutely fabulous. You can sit indoors or outside on the dock/patio. All the employees seem happy to be working there and all the food is extremely delicious. I recommend the platter for 2. Tacos, nachos, flautas, ribs, queso and salad. HUUUUUUGE. Everything is also delicious leftover, even the flautas which I've never had good leftover before. Mmm mmm!

PROS:
CONS: always a very long wait

You won't leave Hula Hut hungry. The ribs are too big to fit on the rather large plates, and the desserts would feed a small country. Desserts are my favorite, and a standout was their Tres Leches Cake, which started a very bad Tres Leches habit. Located on the lake, it has great views and a mean Pina Colada!

if you've been in austin for any length of time you've heard of hula hut... it doesn't have the greatest foods but definitely worth a stop if you're ever in the mood to dine out - the atmosphere is pretty good and the price isn't all that

Filthy place and rude staff. If I could give zero stars I would. The staff is miserable. They must hate working there. They take their loathsome exsistance out on you. The host will just wave you into no mans land and no one will ever bring you a menu let alone a drink. One nice man eventually brought me a gross, dirty towel, so I could clean the table myself. I am still disgusted.

Food was good. Atmosphere was ok.
Server, specifically Megan, is a thief. I used my debit card to pay my bill and left cash for her tip. When the money came out of my account it was for more than my bill. Meaning someone padded their tip. When I called to complain to the manager, Tim, he conveniently couldn't find the merchant copy of the voucher. Maybe because Megan misplaced it accidentally on purpose. Before even speaking to her, he was defending her saying she did it on accident. And you know this how??
He did refund the overage amount, however, because he defended his employee without even speaking to her to get her side of the story, it tells me his customers are not as important as his employees. I will not return.

I am a big fan of Chuy's and like to go to the Hula Hut for cocktails. It seems that every time we order dinner that the food comes out cool or late. This seems to be a problem even when they are not busy.

4 stars for appetizers and drinks!

If 7-11 Were to make a restaurant based on there frozen food section they might as well call it Chuys Hula Hut. First off the salsa was inedible, which made us order the queso, maybe that is there evil plan because the very small queso was 5 bucks. Second, i ordered a burrito and it seriously tasted like i just went to the grocery store and bought the 100 burrito package for 99 cents and poured sauce on it. Everyone was cramped onto that tiny deck, i dunno how the waiters were able to move around. I cannot portray my anger enough for the salsa. DISGUSTING. I left Broke as heel with a stomach ache. I hope a flood takes that place with it.

We went there for my 50th birthday on a Saturday at 1:00 p.m. It was already crowded and we probably had about an hour wait; which is the norm from what I had read on other reviews. We had a party of 20 and they crammed us all together to where we were bumping elbows but we made it work by spreading out around the ends of the tables so it wasn't too bad. The waitress was EXTREMELY nice. I believe her name was Anna (she was pregnant). She was awesome and very friendly. The food...I had their chicken chile relleno and OMG it was delicious!! My daughter had the tubular steak taco which was good as well. The atmosphere was great. Very relaxed. It's well worth the wait once you get seated.

Been to Hula Hut 4 times now and each visit has been more dissapointing than the last. First and second time were decent enough with service being lackluster on the second visit. Service and wait illusion were less acceptable on my third visit. Upon my final visit, tonight, wait was quoted as 15 to 25 minutes and after 35 we asked where we were on the list. Were told we were next on the list so we sat by the front counter. While there we watched two other identical parties seat indoor (our request based on shorter wait times) during the next 15 minutes. There were also four adequate tables within easy view open during most of the 15 minutes we spent sitting at the counter. Also witnessed a member of a party of four come to the counter who said they'd been waiting for 90 minutes (I don't doubt this as they were sitting near us at the bar). While the food is good for the price, the atmosphere is fun and the location can't be beat the deceptive wait time ruins it for me. If you've got two or three hours at your disposal for dinner then Hila Hut is great!

My family has moved to Austin - I live in Dallas. We try to go to Hula Hut when I visit.
I was recently there & we really didn't have a problem w/ the wait because we felt that it was worth it. We sat at the outside bar for awhile, no one came to the table so my friend ordered at the bar, but remained at the table.
A waitress named Lauren - just came over & glared at us when she saw that we had ordered at the bar & not from her. The irony is, it is the customers, that should be mad. We just found it funny that she walked to every table but ours to ask if they needed anything. When we got the table- I did tell her THANKS FOR THE SERVICE.
The waiter at the table was much better, but we were already irritated by that point. I hope she is not still working there when I get back to Austin.

This is truly one of my top 5 restaurants in any city I have been in. The food is spectacular, the location is awesome, the drinks are fantastic and the atmosphere is fun. Plus its a good place to buy a "Keep Austin Weird" t-shirt. You really can't go wrong with the food here, every dish I have had is good. If you are a fajita person, then you can't go wrong here, and they have several different kinds that are unique. The drinks are excellent, and I would recommend the Texas Martini. Where this restaurant shines though is its deck that extends over Lake Austin. Its great for lunch when you can see the full lake, but its even better at night when you can watch the sun go down, and see the lights across the lake at night. It makes for an ideal setting for a meal. The deck is heated so it is good year round and you don't have to worry about getting cold while you are on it. Parking is a little tricky, but there is a large lot up the hill and across the street. There is a little shuttle that is available for those that fear they can't take the hill. If you are visiting Austin then you would be best served adding this restaurant to your list of stops.

This was the first place I ate at when I moved to Austin and I keep going back for more! The scenery is beautiful and the service is great. I'm never disappointed with the food- the Shiner fajitas are excellent! I'm also very picky about my salsa but I have no complaints there. Even if you're just looking for a place to have a few drinks, it's great to just go sit on the dock, have a beer, eat some of the free chips and salsa and relax.

This place is like the Oasis, you go for the view and the atmosphere but the food. We had the appetizer platter and not one thing was good. We're shocked that chuy's owns this place! The queso was like water it was so runny.. service mediocre at best.

Not sure why this place was voted best family friendly place. There were overserved patrons everywhere (duh it''s on the lake). Didn't seem clean either so I'm dumbfounded on how it ended up voted high for families. The view is pretty though so I can see some of it's appeal. Next time I will go for drinks only.

I think jnbruns just got cut when he tried to get in a frat and now he's angry with the world. But Hula Hut is a great location with food I'd rate 7.5 out of 10. It's good, a little pricey but it's a good experience and fun to go with a group.

Bomb this location. The food was terrible, and it was so loud from all the little frat-boy-rich-kids yelling at each other, I couldn't hear myself chew. I hardly ever got a refill, and it took 45 minutes to get a seat. This is where Austin's Bourgeoisie go to feel quaint amongst the commons; euthanize yourself before eating here.

I used to love Hula Hut. Now I have a toddler and I absolutely hate having to wait a minimum of 1 hour (off-peak) for a table and then sitting my little one in their High Chairs. These chairs are disgusting. I once asked staff to please clean it off for me. He simply passed the stinky towel he had on hand and left a bunch of rice in the creases of the chair. Terrible! I always have to scrub them off with disinfecting wipes and they end up black! So, for me it is only worthwhile if we can sit outside, it is a lovely day and we are not starving. Foodwise, I recommend the Puau Platter. Wonderful Tres Leches dessert.

I have a coworker that raves about Hula Hut, but after a few experiences there, I have this to say: the food is unimaginative and overly fried (I'd always thought that frying made just about anything taste better, but Hula Hut has proved me wrong here), the stench of cooking oil gone bad (I'm assuming from the kitchen's greasetrap) is unbearable, and, no offense to the younger crowd, but I don't relish spending an evening out with a bunch of high school kids. Given these factors, I cannot fathom why people would wait 2+ hours for a table!

As someone who loves and has greatly enjoyed lazy afternoons at HH for the past number of years, I was hugely disappointed by my visit last night. I took my mother (in from Dallas) and we met 3 family friends for dinner on a Tuesday night. The wait was expected, and I never expect to have great service at HH, but we had the WORST experience with a waitress I have ever had at any restaurant, ever. To begin with, she was inattentive and acted entirely put out when one of our guests joined us about 30 minutes late (mind you, but this time there were a number of open tables on the deck so it wasn't like we were loitering and keeping her from getting new customers/tips). The icing on the cake though was when one of my friends raised her hand to get her attention after she had walked by our table without so much as a glance in our direction about three times, and she huffed over to our table and actually got mad at my friend, telling her not to ever wave at her again in a VERY demeaning tone of voice. To be fair, the food was fine, and we still had a great time, but the service was appalling.

Hula Hut is a unique Mexican - Polynesian restaurant with a beautiful view of the lake. I always take out of town guests to Hula Hut for a fun and very Austin restaurant. My favorite dish is the Hawaiian Fajitas with a Mai Tai. If you live in or are visiting Austin, you don't want to miss a trip to the Hula Hut.

Pros: Great food

They tried but giving a good volume of food, the quality missed the mark.
If you are under 21, you'll like this place.
Not sure if it is the water or the resturant, but the smell is a problem.

Hula Hut is definitely an Austin jewel. You can tell by how the wait during peak times can take up 1-2 hours easily, and this place isn't small! One of the greatest things to enjoy at Hula Hut is the atmosphere whether you are sitting inside with the chill ambiance or outside on the pier where you can look over onto Lake Austin. Beware though, during peak times parking can even take up a good portion of your time. Still... All people that like in Austin should come check out this place and enjoy the great food that they serve. I highly recommend this place for anyone to check out when they come to Austin.

this is a crazy popular place. i don't know how much of that has to do with the food. the fish tacos are good, the pipeline enchiladas are okay. i do like the mango poblano quesadillas but they aren't enough to be a meal. the veggie fajitas are pretty good. this is a place that is way more for margaritas on the lake. one huge grudge i have- they started charging for the jalepeno ranch dip which used to be on a request basis to go with the chips and salsa.

Pros: on the lake, specialty drinks

Cons: quality declining, prices increasing

Where else can you go that's in the middle of town, sit on the lake and have terriific mexican / sea food while sipping on a fish bowl full of your favorite rum concoction. this is what life in Austin is all about. I suggest the Mantego Bay Shrimp tacos.

Working our way through "to-visit lists" giving to me by people who have lived in Austin longer than we have (4 months): went there one week-day evening. The place wasn't busy, but parking was difficult. Because it was dark, and I was alone with my kids, I used the valet parking ($6). Kids menu was good, with a large variety of kid-friendly stuff. Both kids had the hamburger just made to their liking (medium rare) and loved them. I tried the Thai style fajita tacos that were nice and spicy with the usual vegetables and a lovely peanut sauce to soften the "burn". That, and a Corona after nearly 2 hours on MoPac was just what I needed. I took the half portion ($11.99) which was more than enough, I even had enough stuff left to warrant a doggy bag. They were out of mineral water, which in Austin is bad. What's up with the tap water here, anyway?

Pros: Great views and the jungle theme is really nicely done.

Cons: You have to park across the road or use valet.

Really cool price-fixed menu with lots of variety. Amazing Toll House Cookie desert. Cool location on dock on the lake. Long waits but worth it. Perfect place to go on a nice night because the lake view is awesome. Unique menu.

The food is great, the drinks are great, the atmosphere is awesome - I love this place! They give you large quantities but allow you to split your plate; my husband and I share a plate and leave full. Their desserts are awesome and their outside bars are fun and relaxing. The only drawback is the long wait - be prepared to wait for a considerable amount of time if you go at lunchtime, dinnertime or on the weekends. But if you don't mind hanging out at the bar, it's not too bad.

If you plan on going to Hula Hut on the weekend, especially for dinner, be prepared to wait a while. It's worth the wait though! The fishbowl (drink) is a great value and it should last you all night long. The Pipeline Enchiladas are amazing!!!!

Hula Hut is like the Oasis but with a less "calming" atmosphere to it. You'll generally find it a place with lots of people who're out for the night and ready to drink and hangout. The food is pretty average, and somewhat pricey, but the quantity (burritos) are pretty large. I'd recommend it for groups, drinking after work or on the weekend.

My g/f and I had a hard time getting any service from the outside bar staff. We literally waited for 15+ minutes for the bartender to come over to us (the bar was at average capacity) while he watched tv and did almost everything in his power to avoid us. Luckily, another patron pointed this out to a manager who immediately spoke with his bartender (sternly) and righted the wrong. While this could have soured us on the experience, we'll give it another try...

I think the food here is excellent - I am not a margarita drinker, so I can't speak to that, and it is sometimes a little bit of a wait, but I have always been exceptionally pleased with my meal. Good place for out of town guests, as well.

We visited Hula Hut on a hot Tuesday afternoon. The hostess was friendly enough, and advised that our needs would be best met at the outdoor bar where we'd be served complimentary chips and salsa, and of course, margaritas. The bartender was cold, and treated us like we were wasting his time. He promptly pulled out 2 plastic cups, which I associate with the dentist to rinse after getting one's teeth cleaned--they were literally 8-ounce plastic cups, filled to the top with ice, then a mix and a splash of tequila. All of this for the grand price of $5.25 each. The margaritas tasted so bad and non-alcoholic that neither of us were willing to order another, even though we had expressly gone to a Tex-Mex restaurant with the intent of drinking. We were nursing those drinks for about an hour, and those promised complimentary chips and salsa never appeared.

HH is my Thursday night spot. Parking is terrible, so come by water if you can. Great ritas and tubular tacos. Most of the time there is a wait, usually 20 min on avg, but well worth it!

Hula Hut is not your typical restaurant. While they have great food, (Try the Tubular Tacos) the real draw is the huge waterfront patio and dining room. I can't think of a better way to spend a hot summer night than sipping beers on their deck.

I love Hula Hut - the chicken quacamole tubular taco is fabulous, especially dipped in queso. And the Grass Skirt is a very delicious drink. However, if you want to get seated quickly don't come on the weekends. It's usually almost a 2hr wait at night. It's not bad waiting though if you're not too hungry. You can wait at one of the two outdoor bars or the inside bar. Chips and salsa are complimentary and very good. Order some queso and a couple of Grass Skirts (It's like a pina colada on ice - just as yummy, but not as filling. Made with Melon Liquer, coconut rum, and pineapple juice) and the time will fly by.

Far trendier than your typical "hut," Hula Hut boasts a colorful "Mexonesian" menu (bold Mexican food with Polynesian flair). Given the idyllic Lake Austin setting of this tropical Texan paradise, it wouldn't much matter if the food were…
