These people are the real deal, my fellow Austinites. First, I have never been given the slightest reason to be disappointed w/ their professionalism and competency. Second, Dr. Besch and her colleagues are more personal and compassionate towards our gang of seven than any of the multitude of human docs with whom I've crossed paths. Last, but location-wise, not least : they are centrally located; my front door to theirs is about 10 mins.

I rarely post reviews of businesses but having read some horrific ones here, I feel compelled to add my own.

A few weeks ago, only 2 days after moving to Austin, my cat was in severe distress trying to breathe. I rushed him to the closest vet I could find, Austin Vet Hosp, and my cat was immediately seen by Dr. Boesche. My cat was in heart failure. She got him on oxygen and lasix very quickly. I was treated with respect and compassion by the staff while I waited for my cat to be stablized.

Dr. Boesche normally closes at 5pm but stayed late because my cat was not yet stable enough to move to a 24 hour vet hospital. I was an emotional basket case, my blood sugar was extremely low, and I was not familiar with the route to the 24 hour vet. I asked if anyone there could ride along with me to the 24 hour hospital. The vet tech, Callie, consented to go with me and refused to take money from me for doing so. Before leaving Dr. Boesche's clinic, she handed me a banana, having seen I was looking rather faint.

The next day, Dr. Boesche personally called me, not the hospital where my cat was still, to see how he was doing.

Another Austin vet whom I'd been in contact with had called Dr. Boesche when learning of my cat's heart failure. Based on the condition he was in when I took him to Dr. Boesche, he was very surprised my cat was alive.

Now all of you complaining on here about Dr. Boesche, I just don't get it. If your stories are accurate, perhaps she was having a bad day or going through some kind of life issue, because she saved my cat's life acting faster than any other vet I'd been to in the last 30 years, and I was treated by all staff with great compassion and respect.

I urge anyone reading the nasty comments on this review board to consider at least interviewing Dr. Boesche and her staff personally before deciding if she and her clinic are for you or not. Remember, anyone can post anything they want.

Dr. Palvino is an amazing vet. He has caught things in my dogs that other vets have missed on more than one occasion. I have fostered over 15 rescue dogs in the past 2 years and Dr. Palvino is always giving me free advice and opinions through emails and over the phone. When I first started going to Austin Veterinary Hospital, I was extremely impressed by Dr Besch (the former owner) and Dr Schaubert. Both women were - and still are - fabulous vets, and I have nothing but praise for them and the treatment my pets received in their care. I particularly liked Dr Besch, and her direct, "no nonsense" manner, because it was obvious she became a vet because she loved animals, and not for love of a quick buck. Indeed, on one occasion, when one of my cats had a urinary tract infection, she didn't think it was necessary to send her home with antibiotics. This impressed me because far too many vets will try to get you to agree to unnecessary procedures and medications (I'm taking about you, "Austin Vet Care" on North Lamar!).

Unfortunately, Dr Besch, who must be approaching retirement age, recently sold her clinic to Dr Thomas Palvino, whom I disliked immediately when I first met him. He has a very smarmy, patronising air and I felt that he talked to me as if I were simple-minded just because I happen to be female. His smooth attitude cannot hide the fact that he is far more interested in the dollar signs flashing before his eyes than taking care of animals. Whenever I asked him to write a prescription for heartworm medication for my pets, he seemed annoyed and tried to convince me that the clinic's prices were just as cheap as going online to buy (not true by a long shot!).

Despite these minor grievances, I didn't really have much to say about Palvino other than I just didn't take to him, and that I was made uneasy by his overly business-minded attitude, and the expensive changes made to the practice, which will, of course, be passed on to the customers (e.g. a flashy new website - with professional employee photographs - business cards, and sign). After my experience today with "Austin Veterinary Hospital", however, I, and my husband's eight pets, will certainly not be returning.

To cut a long story short, Dr Palvino stubbornly refused to accept a post-dated check (for under $200) for the emergency treatment of my cat. Worse still, he insulted me by suggesting me that I had brought my cat to their practice today "expecting not to pay". I could hardly believe what I was hearing given that I have been a good customer and have always paid my bills in a timely fashion (within a month at the very, very latest...usually within two weeks).

I understand that veterinary practices are in no way legally required to accept post-dated checks, and that vets only do so out of the goodness of their own hearts. However, I have been a loyal customer of this practice for quite a while now, and, indeed, I am practically a permanent fixture there because I have so many pets, most of them strays from the Eastside. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that I'm there nearly every few weeks for one reason or another.

Most vets would love to have a client like me because I am a responsible pet owner who keeps her cats and dogs up-to-date on shots and will seek out treatment for them at the first sign of illness. As I am a sucker who lives in an area over-populated with stray cats, I constantly find new strays who need medical attention. I have spent a LOT of money at "Austin Veterinary Hospital", and intended to keep taking my pets there, so I thought that my custom would be valued.

It would appear, however, that it is not, and that Dr Palvino feels it is OK to insult pet owners who are not rich and privileged. Palvino is so focused on money that the employee discount he offers to his lovely, hard-working vet techs is so paltry that they are forced to get their animals spayed/neutered at Emancipet (I was shocked to learn this on a recent visit!).

My husband has been using Austin Veterinary Hospital for 8 years. I have been abusing the staff and doctors since the summer of 2003. We are currently caring for 47 cats. Dr. Besch is our only diagnostic veterinarian. As far as I am concerned - diagnosis is her specialty. She and her staff understand that as a shelter we often use low cost spay/neuter and vaccination facilities. But when it comes to emergency care or diagnosis issues - we always take our animals to Dr. Besch and her staff. Everyone at the clinic understands that finances are always an issue with rescue groups and alternative methods of treatments are always offered and discussed. Dr. Schaubert and Dr. Besch have gone the extra mile in many cases and never hesitate to call specialists to discuss treatment options in the rare events wherein their expertise does not suffice. We have had 200+ cats through our doors in the last 5 years and most have been to AVH at least once. The staff and doctors recognize our long term residents upon sight. Dr. Besch has gone as far as to come out to our facility to vaccinate and exam all of the cats at once. She did so at a discounted rate, brought a vet tech and an assistant. My husband and cats and I are now personal friends with many of the staff at AVH. Jellyroll the longtime clinic cat now lives with us. There have been many times that I have called Dr. Besch and complained about the service I received on any given day or a specific employee. Each and every time I have spoken with her she has thanked me and promptly resolved any problems that I brought to her attention. Dr. Besch always shares information with us. We learn something from her during each exam. She always takes the time to explain in both medical terms and layman terms exactly what ailment the cat is suffering with as well as explaining the treatment regimen. She is open to our ideas as well. That is not often a personality trait found in the medical profession.

Dr. Besch and Dr. Wagner have been wonderful taking care of my ailing Basset Hound. They are loving, make themselves available, and answer questions with complete and sincere answers. The office staff, particularly Sonnet, are absolute sweethearts.
