The Texas School of Bartenders is a privately owned trade school that was founded in 1987 on the concept that bartending schools need to concentrate on offering superior training behind "real" bars with "actual" bar equipment from "experienced" bartenders. This school offers a training lab, which includes 42 fully operational bars. Students can learn the latest in carbonated bar systems, beer coolers and draft beer service. The school also provides dual speed racks, three compartment sinks, bottle racks, overhead glass racks, frozen margarita machines, and the latest technology in computerized cash handling. Various types of "Touch Screen" and "Color Monitor Keyboard" point-of-sale systems help any student become a seasoned bartender. Training also includes TABC Certification.

Why was my experience so different?
by Willie M.
The school was great and entertaining, and that's where the positives end...The job placement service is complete and utter BS, and I have no idea how all these people prior to me found jobs so quickly. If you aren't sure how it works (at least for me), they post a job placement list every Friday with a bunch of openings. Ok, great, I get the list and start making phone calls about availability.
1. Howard Bennett at the Austin country club. I call and ask for Howard. "Howard hasn't worked here in over a year." Ok....weird...
2. Fujiyama Steak house. I call and ask if they are still looking to hire. "No, we filled that position about a week ago."
3. A couple random clubs... I go to the addresses given. There isn't even a club at the specified address.
And the list goes on.
The people posting reviews about how great it is... my guess, are the select lucky few who managed to win the lottery. My experience was completely different.
Just be wary before giving them your $500

Texas School of Bartenders-Austin
by will d.
Hi , My Name is Will Dodd and I am writing this note to thank the guys at Texas School of Bartenders . The reason for this note is I enrolled at " Big Mikes Bartending school " back in Early November . Well That guy took my money and then closed down . His Phone # is disconnected and the doors are locked . I did everything in my power to get justice . I came over to the Texas School of Bartenders to see if they could assist me . Assist me they did . I am a student at Texas School of Bartenders Currently and they are giving me the class for free because I got RIPPED off . These guys are honorable , nice and have been around since 1988 . Jim Shearer has already found me some work and I am very excited after having a very bad experience . If you are looking at getting trained in Austin then go to the very best school around . 20 years is a long time in business so they are doing things right .

I never do this kind of thing but I have to say " Joe Bartender " does not know what he is talking about . The Boyz at TSOB know what they are doing forward and backwards . I went to the Austin location 2 years ago and trained under Jim Shearer . I am the General Manager at The Steven F. Austin Hotel and would have NEVER been in the position without the guidance of Mr. Shearer . I will always be thankful to Texas School of Bartenders . If you want and great experience go see these guys . You will not be sorry . Come see me sometime . Walter .

The Austin Branch

This class is 2 weeks long, 4 hours per day, one of which is TABC certification. You can do evenings or mornings which is nice for people who need one or the other...they're flexible, too, so talk to them about scheduling if you need to.
The teachers are experienced and the fake alcohol does as well as it can possibly do compared to the real thing...it's hard to learn to layer drinks with it but you do learn how.
Kevin was a really good instructor. He knew his stuff and he was very patient. He is really interested in the art of mixology and you will do well to get him talking about it. He was a pleasure to learn from. Make sure he blows fire for you...he'll teach you how if you want. Be careful!
Malibu is a fun guy and has a lot of good stories about bartending. This is a bar setting so don't come around if you are easily offended. Malibu's forte is making drinks very quickly.
I didn't see Jim, the owner, much because I had the evening classes but the contact I did have with him showed he was fair and wants to do right by the students...he will expect you to do what you say you will do in return but that isn't much to ask at all.
I did learn a lot...wish there had been fewer students but I got the impression that my classes were a little heavier than normal.
One thing I suggest, during the time you are taking class or after, is go get some real alcohol (I suggest Specs) and spouts, glasses and a shaker...some mixers...and start making real ones. Look through your book and see which ones sound good...then go home and make them...use your friends are guinea pigs...they won't mind!
Also, study, study, study and practice practice practice! Find ways to memorize your drinks...and don't cheat on tests! You won't be doing yourself any favors!
