Reviews for Orbit Salon

Ratings_icons orbit rocked my curls

Lisa G.

I was referred by a friend who lives next door to Orbit and I have always had amazing haircuts and a really good time there. I'm actually kind of offended by the review below because I live a street back from Cesar Chavez and my neighborhood is certainly not a ghetto (she must be from westlake). Anyhow, my hair is super curly and frizzy and it takes a really special person to bring it under control. Rodney took charge of it and actually made it look healthy and shiny (wow!) Friendy and talented bunch, be warned.

Ratings_icons Orbit Salon is a joke in the middle of the ghetto

maya k.

from the moment I pulled up to the curb, i should have known better. The salon is located in a very seedy area with bums and vagrants panhandeling outside. They messed up my appiontment, gave me the wrong stylist (who did nothing but talk about how hungover she was from the night before, but yet talked about how how she was being kept late to do my hair) and at best gave me a crappy, overpriced cut. The receptionist looked like a cack head with not an ounce of perfessionalism. Long story short, not only will I not return to there gutter "punkrock" salon but i will also tell all my friends to take their busness elsewhere!!!!

A friend recommended Orbit and I had a great experience with Jessica. Everyone was super friendly and Jessica really listened to what I was looking for. They also offer free trims in between cuts.

Ratings_icons Best Color and Cut Ever

LStillz

I absolutely love Jessica. Every time I get my hair highlighted, I can expect a ton of compliments. I'm loving life as a blond and am so happy she took me there. I've also always had massive quantities of hair, a ton of it and really thick. She is the only person who could tame the wild beast. The only problem is my haircut is always way cooler, hipper and trendier than I am. But I'm trying to catch up!

Pros: staff, price, colorist

Cons: my hair is cooler than I am

Ross is awesome. Ross is Ross-some! I've been going to him for a year and a half. I got my hair done yesterday, and I love it. He can always keep up with my hairbrained ideas (PUN), and add his genius to them to make them even better. He is an artist. Ross, you can't leave Austin. Ever. I love the salon too, it's really cute and the staff are super nice.

Pros: great location, great customer service, and ROSS

Ratings_icons If you're looking for a new salon...look no further!

Armosino

Having just moved to Austin from Oregon about a month ago I was very apprehensive about finding a new stylist/salon that I would love. I found Orbit Salon on the internet and made my appointment. What a wonderful experience! I can't say enough good things. The staff are super friendly and Ross is awesome!! I tried a new cut and he got it spot on perfect. He is truly an artist and a great , friendly guy. So, if you're looking for a new salon I would try Orbit. You can't go wrong!!

Ratings_icons Don't be fooled - Orbit & Ross are Austin gems

Babsikins

I discovered Orbit a couple of years ago. I went to a couple of different stylists before I landed in Ross's chair. The other stylists were very good, but Ross seemed to be able to read my mind and understand my hair better than anyone has in over 23 years. I've tried everything from bold to subtle cut/color, short to medium-long cuts, and been happy. Even better - both of my daughters LOVE him. My emo 12-year old said he's a genius and proudly displays a picture of herself with Ross on her Facebook page (she's super gregarious and had a great time "dishing" with Ross). My hip, style-conscious 18-year old loves her cuts and said he did exactly what she wanted without her having to say much (she's the quiet type).

I have to appear on TV and in the media as part of my job and can always be sure that the cut is fun enough for a night on the town, but adaptable enough to do a TV appearance and look "professional."

Pros: excellent cut/color, fun atmosphere, web appts

Cons: none

This was my first visit to Orbit and I'm SO glad I tried it out. Jessica Edwards gave me the cooooolest haircut I've ever had!!! I think I gave her quite a bit of leniency and I'm really glad I did. I am just in shock over how much better a really good haircut can make me look. I seriously look 100x more hip! Thank you Jessica! I will DEFINITELY be coming back here.

Ratings_icons sloppy bob

blondie09

I went to Orbit salon based on the reviews I read on citysearch. I had asked the girl who cut my hair to trim up the bob I already had, as I wanted to grow out my hair a bit. The hair cut looked fair (not great) when I left the salon, but when I got home and tried styling it myself for the first time, i realized that there was a whole chunk of hair in the back that she had forgotten to cut. For the price that I spent on this haircut, this is very sloppy and unprofessional. I would go back to her to fix the mess, but I just don't trust her to do it since she's the one who blatantly missed the hair in the first place. I have NO idea how even a beginner hair stylist would do something such as this. Despite the staff being very sweet and welcoming, I am very unsatisfied with this salon and do not plan to go back.

Ratings_icons Love Love Lisa!!

katieransom

I was really lucky to have been sent to Lisa Herzog at Orbit by a friend several months back. I have short hair and get bored easily and Lisa gets me and likes to have fun experimenting with new styles and colors. She listens to me...which is so important in a stylist because I've come out of other salons looking like a freakshow before...but even better is that she's creative and can visualize the end effect which allows her to make some awesome suggestions that might sound crazy at first but make me look better than I could have imagined when I first went in looking for a change or an update.
I would definitely recommend her to any of my friends.

Pros: Staff were super friendly; atmosphere was relaxed, easy-going.

Cons: Not enough parking.

Ratings_icons Amazing!

Rachel1126

My experience at Orbitz has been absolutely wonderful!! I have been getting a haircut there about once a month since Oct. 2007, always with Erin, and I am always just blown away by how good of a job she does. I am a chronic stylist jumper, because I am never just 100% satisfied, but with Erin I am always 110% satisfied! For example, the first time I walked in, I brought a picture of what I wanted, she politely explained to me that it wouldn't work well with my hair, but walked me through a style similar that would work. Every step of the way she checked to make sure I was happy, when I wasn't she listened and adapted. Then, about two weeks ago, I walked in with pictures of what I thought I wanted, and told her to surprise me, and it is the best cut ever! I love it! Also, I have gotten a massage here, and the therapist is wonderful! She got all of the knots out of my back, and was so nice! The one thing with the massages though, is being that the house is older, you can hear a lot of what is going on in the salon. That is a bit distracting. I am still going to return though because she did that great of a job!! The other wonderful part about Orbitz, is that you get a free three week trim. Being that my hair is super short, that is perfect maintenance, and they are so nice, event hough you aren't paying!! I just love everything about every visit I have made to this salon! Just Wonderfully Amazing!!!!

Pros: Staff super nice, cool atmosphere, easy to schedule

Cons: During massage, a bit loud

Ratings_icons Friendly staff, god-awful haircut

cce6062

Having just moved to Austin, I needed to find a place to get my haircut. After reading the reviews (most of which were glowing) I decided to try Orbit. After all, the chief complaints seemed to be about hair color/salon cleanliness, neither of which deterred me. I'm a man, I don't want my hair colored, and I can get my hair cut in a dumpster as long as it looks good afterward. Anyway, when I got there, the staff was super-friendly and I thought the interior was cute. I have no idea what the complaints about cleanliness were about, the place seemed clean and tidy to me. However, as soon as I met the person who was going to cut my hair, I knew I was screwed. (They seemed really sweet so I will refrain from using any descriptors re: their identity). My instructions were incredibly simple and the stylist followed none of them. Basically, I was given a crew cut. Seriously. I look like friggin' PeeWee Herman. I keep trying to figure out what exactly the stylist was going for. I still can't figure it out. It is THE WORST haircut I've ever gotten, and I keep getting angrier and angrier about it with each passing day. There's nothing I can do with it. It's so insanely short, except for these really weird, super-long pieces that I keep finding near the back of my head. One side in the front was too long while the other side was way too short, but I fixed that (kind of) when I got home. I read the owner's responses to the complaints on citysearch and, while I appreciate his willingness to try and rectify the problems, unless he's pioneered a new technique that'll bring my hair back, there's nothing I can do but wait. Considering how ridiculously short my hair was cut, I think I'm gonna be waiting a while.... I read in people's reviews that they really appreciated the lack of attitude at Orbit, and I did as well, but I'll take a ton of attitude and a good haircut over a friendly staff and a horrible cut any day of the week.

Pros: Cute salon, really friendly staff

Cons: My hair looks awful.

Ratings_icons Very Happy Customer!!!!

2013angel

I was surprised to see the last reviews--MY experience was fantastic--I am PLEASED with both my cut and color. I found Orbit by searching "salons specializing in trendy cuts". I spoke to the receptionist who was very polite. I was looking to make a drastic change (drastic for me anyway) and I shared my thoughts with her and she quickly and confidently recommended someone for the job. When I got there, the customer service was awesome. They offered me a beverage and my stylist wasn't running behind which I hate about most places I have had my hair done. Jessica was great. She was friendly and we seemed to have some common personality traits. I consider getting my hair done part of "my time" and I like to relax and enjoy myself. I usually like to read and although we chatted, she also gave me some time to myself to read my book and I appreciated that. Like one of the last reviewers I am pretty particular about my hair. This is THE HAPPIEST I have been in a VERY long time. Jessica listened to my needs, my cut is adorable and easy to maintain, and the color is great. I was shocked by the cost because I have paid MUCH, MUCH more for work that I haven't been near as pleased with. I LOVE my new cut and it is getting rave reviews so far, which is nice. I have already been asked several times about the salon and stylist and have certainly shared both Orbit and Jessica's name with everyone who has asked. My ONE and ONLY concern was that while under the heat during my color processing the product became very liquified and began running --I was a little afraid of what my color might look like, but Jessica was quick to respond and as I mentioned--I am VERY happy with the result. To the last reviewers--I would certainly take the salon up on its guarantee. They gave me a flier explaining their desire for customer satisfaction--not all salons do this--and they even called to be sure I was happy! I think they mean it when they say they want you to be satisfied!!

Pros: great customer sevice, reasonable pricing

Cons: NONE

Ratings_icons Disappoint Salon !!!!!

Top10

I went to this Salon based on the reviews here. On the Salon's website they paint a picture that is nothing like what the salon is like in person. It was very dirty Salon - dirty in the restroom and very poor customer service. The hairdressers Chris had poor skills. When I left I felt I had just left a haunted house! I would never recommend this Salon to anyone. Please don't believe everything you see and what they advertise on their website. Don't waste your time in a place like this !

Pros: Nice website (ONLY )

Cons: Poor customer service. DERTY salon , haidresser poor skills

Ratings_icons I'm pretty bummed out

19jezabelle

I just moved to Austin from LA about a month ago. I have always worked in high end salons, but had no idea where to go now that I am in TX. Anyway, I found this salon through City Search. When I called in the receptionist was very nice and recommended a colorist/stylist for me. I was a little hesitant, as I told her that I come from a high end salon backround and I am very picky, but she quickly referred me to someone with out listening to everything I had to say. I figured, I'll go with it and keep my fingers crossed this person is good. First of all, the salon is nowhere near as nice as it appears on the website. It is very run down, nothing matches and it's really dirty. Anyway, my girl was nice, but didn't talk much and took almost 2 hours to put foils in my hair. When I was being shampooed I asked if she was going to tone my hair and she told me it matched and we didn't need to. I thought this was odd, but whatever. During the haircut everything seemed alright and she blew my hair out almost the way I like, but it was a little beauty pagenty. No big deal, as when I do it myself, it won't look like that. So the second I get in my car and I look at my hair color in the sunlight I was horrified. It was bright butter yellow...glowing in the sun. I went home right away and I used a toner that I already had there to try on get rid of the bright yellow. It helped, but my roots are still pretty bright. I was trying to stay positive , but after blowdrying my hair myself I realized that it is super heavy on one side and the back is totally jacked...it looks like I have 2 hair cuts. She cut a shelf in the back of my hair. I will say that everyone was very nice and seemed to be having fun, which is great and a nice enviroment. If anyone has any suggestions, I want to know who s the absolute BEST in Austin. I want upscale, I am not into this vintage, artsy Austin vibe when it comes to my hair.

Pros: Very nice staff

Cons: my hair color and cut, the salon is really dirty and run down

Ratings_icons I've never been a "loyal" salon customer, but....

cmhurst

once I found Jessica at Orbit Salon, I knew I wouldn't be going anywhere else. I've always had the same boring hair - long, one length, maybe a couple of layers. It really didn't matter who cut my hair, since it was the most lame, basic haircut in the world. Every four months or so, I'd realize I was turning into Cousin It, and I desperately needed a trim. I would just call whoever was closest at the last minute and see who could get me in. Last year, I stumbled across Orbit's clever website, and I decided to try something new. When I told Jessica I was tired of looking like a Mormon housewife, she gave me the best cut I've ever had in my life. I'm not exaggerating, I've gotten more comments on this haircut than I've ever received. It's young and flattering, and it feels like I paid a lot of money for it. When my sister saw it for the first time, she called and set up an appointment. Not only that, but Jessica LISTENED and BELIEVED me when I told her I needed low maintenance - this style is even more low maintenance than the straight, boring, one length hair. I can comb my hair out of the shower, let it dry naturally, and it still looks good. Also, getting my hair done is a fun experience; the salon has really friendly front door staff, a relaxed atmosphere, and yet still feels trendy. Plus, the prices are reasonable, so I don't feel guilty going back every 6 weeks for a trim. Try them out, you won't regret it!

Ratings_icons Orbitz is a Keeper!

124578girl

I went to Orbitz salon and was placed in the care of Miss Jessica. She is a fantastic stylist and colorist. I love my hair now. She was able to take my dark brown, almost black hair to a really awesome Sandy brown with Gold highlights. I think my hair looks better than the Jessica Alba photo I showed her. She also gave my long shaggy thick mane a new cut that reduced the heaviness and split ends. My new cut is managable and in vogue.
My husband smiled the minute I walked in the door and said wow... I love it.
My stylist was very attentive and honest; she did not make me feel rushed. She worked non-stop to fight any red color that wanted to peek through my hair during the color lifting process. Also Jessica's personality was really comforting. She is a nice person to talk to, who left me with a great impression of her talent and wonderful humor.
Orbitz is a pleasure to visit. I'll go back for highlights and I'll definitely refer orbitz to 20 more girlfriends and acquaintances this year... minimum. I also want to say besides the stylist, the atmosphere was very cool. The girl at the reception area was quick, smart and intuitive. No waiting, no confusion. She offered me coffee when I first came in, which I so needed (my appointment was early on a Saturday). The owner had his chair right next to Jessica's. He was accommodating, and polite. He would check on patrons around the salon and was approachable and friendly. He seemed hands on in his shop. I liked that.
Great crew at Orbitz. It makes me think of the wonderful California salons in Santa Barbara and along the coast. Anyway, If you gotta take a risk with your hair, Choose Orbitz. They are keepers! Thank you guys.

Pros: Great Service, Wonderful talent, Lots of Experienced Stylists

Cons: Kinda chilly inside, just bring a sweater

Ratings_icons Go to Orbit Salon! Will Oliver always makes me look GREAT-What more would I want?

jecrews

Will Oliver has been styling my hair since 2003; I have followed him until he finally arrived here at Orbit Salon-which I love! Everyone is attentive and gives excellent customer service. I visit Will at the Salon about every 6 weeks for hair color and style. I get so many compliments on my color and style, and I suggest Will and Orbit. Will makes sure my hair is healthy and in the best condition. Whenever I visit, I get to have a cup of coffee while he works on my hair. We laugh so hard because he has such a fantastic personality. Thanks for everything!

Pros: Eclectic atmosphere Downtown

When I first moved to Austin, Oribt was the first salon I tried out and I haven't been to another place since! I am a loyal customer to Will Oliver because he is so good at what he does and is such fun to be around. I adore Will! Before I met him, I would always end up with hairstyles that were too tame for me despite my many explanations of what I wanted. Will is great at understanding what I'm looking for whether it be bright purple highlights with long hair, or a cute, messy blonde bob. He is equally as talented with funky colors and cuts as he is with softer, more professional looks. I'm hooked :) Orbit is hip yet totally unpretentious. I love it!

Ratings_icons I Heart Mischa.

ablee

Mischa (aka Michelle) is a doll. I have been going to Mischa since I moved to Austin about a year ago. I am always extremely nervous about changing stylists, but Mischa came highly recommended so I gave it a go and am happy to have her as my new stylist! Mischa always takes the time to talk to me about what cut and color I'm going for and then offers her suggestions. I recently decided to change my normal platinum blonde locks to red. Mischa has been wonderful trying to get the right color. She explained to me from the beginning that it would take multiple applications for the color to stay. Just as she explained, it took a bit but we now have the right color and it is a beautiful change for the fall! Not only am I in love with Mischa, but the salon itself is a treat. The old dryers remind me of when I used to go to the salon with my grandmother. Great memories :)

Pros: Stylists, Atmosphere, Service

Cons: Parking

Ratings_icons Too risky

anaustinite

I went to this salon seeing great reviews online. But it turned out to be a risky deal for me. I think my hair dresser did not do a good job of setting my expectations and fulfilling them appropriately. Ofcourse I wanted a new look and that's why I was there. But I got a feeling that a lot of damage was done in terms of style. Uneven locks, just plain gauchy. Even worse was that the hair dresser was trying to pass his work off as a piece of art.

I was so embarassed to sport my hair in public. I have been pinning it up in all directions to make myself look acceptable. Even that is hard as some of the hair was cut so short it looks shaven.

If you still want to try this place make sure you know what you are getting. If you are not in the mood to be so risky, you may want to step inside Catena's Hair Studio next door.

Pros: Cant think of any

Cons: Too Funky

Ratings_icons The best haircut that I have had in a long time!

judy_bastrop

I read the other positive feedback about Chris Kirkpatrick and it is all very accurate. He was very honest about the haircut that I had in mind (WAY too much maintenance) and he cut it in a very stylish, low maintenance style that fits my lifestyle. He is very professional and he made me feel very comfortable. I cannot recommend him enough.

Orbit Salon is a very cool place and the location is within walking distance of a lot of places in the downtown area. The prices are very good and the staff friendly. I am definitely going back and recommending it to my friends and co-workers.

Ratings_icons Christian Kyle is a rockstar! (literally and figuratively)

mby922

Like previous reviewers have said, Orbit Salon is a great fit for Austin. It is both unpretentious and cool in the same style of the city. When I called to make my appointment, Christian Kyle actually answered the phone and got me in very quickly. I was referred to the salon by a friend on a local chatboard, and used to live in Chicago so was thrilled at the accessibility of someone who was recommended as highly as he was to me. I was thrilled with the haircut that Christian gave me. It is pretty awesome when you can go in to a salon and give them a few vague descriptive words of what you're looking for, and then be completely blown away with the result. I had the same hair for 5 years before meeting with Christian and he totally updated my look, while making me feel totally comfortable at the same time. I've gotten so many compliments on my new hair. Christian is a rockstar! And, he is in a band, so that is both figurative and literal!

Pros: cool place, great hair cut, price is right

Ratings_icons Excellent-Chris Kirkpatrick

wwills

I've never written a review before but because it's been so difficult to find a really good colorist/stylist in Austin (I've tried several over the last 3 years) I'm compelled to let people know they can finally stop searching. I had an appointment with Chris Kirkpatrick at Orbit Salon today and I am thrilled with the results. I have been flying from Austin to LA to get my hair done because I've been so disappointed with the hair options in Austin. I was ready to give up hope of ever finding a local spot to get my hair done when I decided to give Chris a try after reading the reviews on City Search. I'm very happy I took the leap. The highlights/lowlights are perfect and exactly what I wanted. The cut is great too! Not only was he able to achieve the color and cut I wanted but I believe that over time my confidence in him will build to the point where I will take bigger risks and get edgier with my hair. Chris was easy going and I felt very comfortable with him. If you're looking for a talented, knowledge and creative hairstylist in Austin, I highly recommend giving Chris a try.

Ratings_icons Great hair services, so-so pedicure

lorapalmr

I got my hair cut and colored by Chris K., he was great and took the time to make sure we were on the same page before he did anything. I was very pleased with how my cut and color turned out. I've also had a pedicure there which was really mediocre. They use the little pedi foot baths instead of the nice big pedi chairs. This is fine if you are charging nail salon prices, but for the basic "spa" pedi it was $35 and it only lasted about 35-40 minutes. The nail tech was friendly, but was on her cell phone for the first ten minutes of the appt. She made too much small talk as well, when I'm going for a "spa" experience I'd rather just sit back and enjoy the experience instead of having to make small talk...but that might be just me. The bottom line is that I could go to any number of asian nail salons and sit in a nice big cushy chair for an hour pedicure with the same kind of "spa" rubs and such for $20-25. Great salon for hair, but not too sure about the other services.

Last fall I stumbled upon Orbit Salon via the web looking for a place close to my job (UT) and voila! I do not care for "snooty salons" so it was very important to me to find a place with talent, trendiness, and comfortable setting with friendly staff. I love the historical house, the unpretentious atmosphere, colors & coolness, and Lisa Herzog, my stylist. I got a pedicure last fall and the staff at the front told me that Lisa also cut hair great, so I promptly made an appointment. She really works with your wishes and has a lot of creativity...great! She also spends the time and care to do an excellent job consistently. My husband now gets his hair cut by Lisa as well. I have observed other stylists there as well doing extremely caring work with their clients. As my late father would have said, "this place is out of this world!" Really, he said that for years when he thought something was great, just so happens to fit Orbit's theme!

Pros: Talented stylists, friendly & casual atmosphere, fair pricing, location

Cons: none

Ratings_icons Best group of hair professionals you will ever want

stratusman

Not that customer service is the only reason why you visit a salon, but the follow up and coordination amongst reception and stylists is remarkable. From the moment you enter the salon your greeted and treated like a VIP. Read the BIOS of the stylists and your sure to find one that fits your style. I found Chris Kirkpatrick to be a guy with a an intense degree of detail and precision. I honestly feel that when I walk out of this salon, I could not have a better experience in Austin. I've been to popular salons in Seattle, Los Angeles, New Zealand, Germany and many others, but Orbit Salon is one that I am confident to recommend. Made the mistake once of deviating from Orbit Salon due to time constraints and lived to regret it. Thankfully Chris was able to repair the damage and return my hair to a "work of art" as opposed to the "pardon our dust" cut that a wanna be left on my head. Oh, and your sure to find the hair product that will keep your style in place on your way out, too!

Pros: Cool, fun atmosphere, great staff, extremely organized, efficient, great web site, make appointments on-line with live person

Cons: Traffic going to/from downtown.

Ratings_icons Super Cheap and Super Cool

nadianadianadia

Okay, this was my first time at Orbit and I'm a freak about switching stylists but I also like to try new people. When I want a haircut, I want it right then and there. I called on a Monday (they're closed on Mondays) and I was booked for an appointment Tuesday. I am extremely indecisive when it comes to hair but I know that my hair is way to thick and needs help but I don't know how to say it. Well, I got Jamon and he rocked it! My hair has never been this light feeling. Not to mention he turned me on to a new flat iron that actually works and is cheap. Speaking of cheap. I had no idea how cheap Orbit was. I don't usually care how much a haircut is, but it was a nice suprise to find out that it was under $50. That's a first in years for me! Everyone at the salon was super friendly and the funky home converted into a salon was very comfortable. As I'm signing my credit card slip, I get a bag of goodies and a free dry trim/bang trim in a few weeks. It doesn't get any better than that. A++++ Highly recommended. Especially Jamon. He did an excellent job. (P.S. I read all of these reviews before I decided to go in, an they were all right. This place deserves the awards it wins)

Pros: Great service, felt comfortable, cheap. no waiting around

Cons: none

First time customer. Had my hair cut by the coolest girl, Kristina. She took the time to ask me what I wanted and informed me how she could work with my hair. She did an awesome job on the cut and style! All my friends dug my new cut. There was no pressure on product sales. She mentioned what products she used on me in case I liked how the products handled my hair and if I ever wanted to buy the products elsewhere. Really cool people and place. Totally recommend it!

Ratings_icons i heart orbit salon!

richellecates

i had to find a new salon after my last sylist blew town. boy did i ever get it right with orbit! the atmosphere is SO austin: unpretentious, kitchy, laid-back, upbeat, inviting. from the friendly front desk staff and beverage station up front to the personalized stylists' suites, every appointment is like visiting a old friend. i chose chris kirkpatrick as my stylist for his years of experience and numerous accolades but had no idea he would be so friendly and personable. his skill as a stylist/colorist is the best i've yet experienced. prices are reasonable and i have NEVER felt pressured to buy products.
orbit is not your mom's salon. purple hair and mohawks are commonly seen around here but i'm not a purple hair kinda gal and just love this place. it's not immaculate (located in an old house downtown) and by no means sterile (that's part of it's charm) so if you're looking for a chemical smell, stainless steel and white porcelain, you won't be pleased. but if you're looking for a relaxed experience and service that is second to none, orbit is the place for you.

Pros: truly austin atmosphere, skilled stylists, friendly staff

Cons: None

Ratings_icons The perfect fit for Austin

My sister told me about Orbit hair Salon, knowing that I was quite particular about going to new places to get my hair cut. I love so many things about Orbit, from the curb appeal to the tunes the play in the waiting area. My hair stylist, Chris Kirkpatrick, was the sweetest thing ever. He gave me an amazing hair cut, and would even explain why he cut hair the way he does, which I appreciated. It was a nice experience- the people were so friendly! It's easy to set an appointment and they have many talented people. I highly recommend Orbit to anyone.

Pros: Great Staff, Talent Stylists, and Worth the money

Ratings_icons Disappointing and dirty

I was disappointed at the hair experiences both I and a family member had on two separate occasions. We both received cuts from Rhonda who came recommended with great cutting skills on the website, but seemed more concerned with hurrying to finish when she found out neither of us were interested at the time in purchasing additional products or services other than those we'd booked. My cut was mediocre, and my styling nonexistent (she left it wet). When my family member stated that she did not want a color job (which had not been booked and Rhonda was already running behind, ) she was turned over to another more inexperienced stylist to finish the blowout.
Also, on the second visit we came in the back entrance since we were unfamiliar with the salon and passed through a very dirty, unsanitary area to get to the stylists' stations. Open food containers everywhere, dust and dirt on many surfaces, hair on the floor, etc.

Pros: Prices are very reasonable, and very interesting, informative website

Cons: Results not as advertised on website

Ratings_icons Kate for a great cut and color!

nienkster

When I moved to Austin from Europe I had trouble finding a good hair stylist. A friend recommended Kate at Orbit Salon. I was a little scared by the high hip-factor when I first walked in, but Kate's professionalism put me at ease immediately. She really listened to what I wanted and cut my hair accordingly. Kate has been my hair dresser for years now and she never fails to deliver great results. Recently she put highlights in my hair and it looks fabulous. Very natural and subtle: exactly what I wanted. And I love the fact that I can come in to get my bangs trimmed for free between hair cuts too. You can tell that she really cares. My hair has never looked better thanks to her talent and styling tips. She is very personable and fun as well. I always look forward to seeing her!

Pros: Cuts, Colors and Highlights, Service, Professionalism, Ambience

Cons: None

This salon is out of this world! I had an awesome time, I was a bit reluctant to go just because I was having a relaxer put in and you hear so many horror stories and such, plus I had fried my hair doing my own back in the day. Anyway I bit the bullet and went, and am so glad I did! The minute I walked through Orbit's doors I felt at ease. Cool music, tricked out decor, and a very informal, inviting atmosphere. Within minutes of my arrival Kristina came over, introduced herself and we went back to work on my hair, which is no easy task (being mixed I have very unruly hair). But Kristina handled it proficiently! And not only did the relaxer help to tame my hair, but I can't remember learning so many things in one sitting! Well, maybe in school but they weren't half as interesting! Great place, great conversation, and great outcome, who could ask for more. I also had no problem with parking, just go early on the weekend. Oh, I also heard about this cool band called the applicators-google them, they rock!

Pros: music, people, atmosphere

Cons: not that i noticed

Ratings_icons There's no place like Orbit!

After moving from Chicago, I was desperate for a salon but I wanted talent, funk & an atmosphere that definitely wasn't a "beauty shop". Seeing the blue house, cool sign & then the fab website I was able to choose a stylist & services, plus do it all on-line. Immediately I felt at ease with Rhonda's talent and manner. She listens & takes time to get to know you & your hair's personality (yes, your hair has a personality). She cares so much that what you want & what will work for you is what you get. Now my daughter & I, and other acquaintances go to Orbit. We all get compliments - even on what we think are bad hair days! I drive in 24.5 miles and don't mind at all, it's more than worth it!

Pros: Flexible schedules, Knowledge/Experience, Value/Service costs

Cons: Parking, Parking, Did I say parking?

Ratings_icons Chris Kirkpatrick!

kaylafanning

Today was my first cut at Orbit and I really enjoyed my experience. My stylist was Chris Kirkpatrick. I made my appointment using AIM which was really easy since I was at work and couldn't make a personal call. Chris was very professional and I enjoyed talking with him. He really grasped was I was going for with my short cut and he took the time to "get to know" my hair (his words, hehe) and really give me a good cut that I can work with. Not to mention he gives great shampoo massages! I'll definitely be using him from now on. I've heard great things about plenty of the other stylists, too.

Pros: Great atmosphere, Funky Austin style, Plenty of open appts

Cons: Location, Parking, $50+ for a cut.

I've had my hair colored by Michelle for years now! I refer everyone to her because she does an awesome job and incorporates her wonderful personality into her work. She listens to what I want and gives suggestions on how to make my look even better. Everyone I've encounterd at Orbits is really friendly and they always treat everyone really well. One of the few places that has evening appointments. They are great when it comes to working around busy schedules.

Ratings_icons I LOVED IT!

I had a GREAT experience at this salon over the weekend. My first thought on entering was that I might be a little too square for this place since I'm no punk rocker and I don't have wild colors in my hair, but I soon felt really comfortable and welcome. Rawny Stephenson listened carefully to what I wanted, made some suggestions, gave me an absolutely fabulous haircut, and was super-fun, down to earth, and easy to talk to. It was a little more pricey than I am used to, but the quality of the work and the overall experience are well worth it!

Pros: Talented stylists, Friendly service

Ratings_icons What a fun salon!

Elizabeth is fantastic. I came in to get my hair colored and cut with her after reading about her on their website. I was a little nervous, but she totally made me feel comfortable and talked with me about several options before we got started. I finally found someone who was willing to listen to me, not just used me as an experiment. Everyone at this salon is so nice and welcoming. It doesn't feel like a "who's the coolest" contest the way some other salons in town feel. I can't wait to go back.

Pros: Great Staff, Central Location

I felt so welcome and comfortable at Orbit! Rhonda cut my hair and also gave me highlights. She took time to really listen to what I wanted and also added helpful suggestions. She really made sure that it would be a functional cut that would work with my job, hobbies, etc. Along with Rhonda, the rest of the staff were really nice.

Pros: Inexpensive Cuts, Friendly Staff, Great Location

Cons: Expensive highlights, small parking lot

I've been looking for a place in Austin to get my hair cut for a while. The staff was very friendly and professional. They even were able to fit me in within an hour of my phone call.
