The Scene
Bedecked in ruby and gold, chandeliers and crisp white linen add an air of quiet formality to the long, narrow dining room. The tantalizing aroma of exotic spices and subdued Indian music make this Eastern gem seems worlds away from Central Expressway and the Tom Thumb shopping center in which it is located.

The Food
Lovers of Indian cuisine will be in nirvana. From the tandoor (a clay oven used for cooking meats) seekh-kebab, spiced ground meat grilled on a skewer, is a standout. Chicken tikka masala is boneless chicken pieces cooked in a mildly spiced cream and tomato sauce. Vindaloo gosht, beef or lamb cooked with potatoes in an intensely spiced sauce, provides extra kick for heat fanatics. Most dishes come with aromatic rice, but don't forget naan or one of the other specialty breads for sopping up extra sauce.

The Inside Scoop

  1. When to Go - Sample a variety of dishes at the Sunday buffet. Lunch (11:30am-2:30pm) is $7.95 and dinner (6pm-10pm) is $9.95.
  2. The Extras - Vegetarians can feast here as well: the menu features an ample selection of vegetarian specialties.

My favorite indian food in town!

by Ashley W. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,400

Taj Mahal is the best Indian food I've had in Dallas. My favorite dishes are vegetarian (although I'm not) including the Saag Paneer and Chana Masala. The buffet at lunch is pretty good but be prepared to leave very full!

never had a bad dish

by Margaret S.

Frequent customer of the Taj both for lunch and dinner. Both are worth the trip. Best chicken tikka masala in DFW area, compared to other indian restaurants I have visited, Taj is less expensive or at least on par with them. They will custom your dish to the spice level you like, I always take home leftovers as the portion sizes are healthy.

Go for the Buffet

by gracie m. | insider Insider | Rank: 19,949

I work in the area so this is a frequent lunch for most in my building. They are always packed over lunch and usually for the buffet more than the menu. I get a little worried when it comes to buffets because you don't know how long it has been sitting there or the temperature it is being kept at but we have never had a problem here. Lunch buffet can run about $9 per person including drink. We are always able to get in and out in about 30-45 minutes. They don't always have the same thing for buffet but it is always good and worth the money. I've never been for dinner but I'm sure it is just as good as lunch.

Pros: cheap and easy
Cons: can get crowded at lunch

Cute place

by Hoang H. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,140

I enjoy Indian food from time to time and try to make some at home whenever I can. I came by this place on a trip to the Indian market nearby and decided to try it out. People say that restaurants near markets are better than not if you are unsure of how good a place is. Well, this place is pretty good but the atmosphere is a little lonely. We were there at 8pm and there was only one other couple there and nobody else. I guess the food is a bit expensive but Indian food is normally more expensive than American.

Good food

by Nidhi B. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,977

After a recommendation of one of my friends i went to try food at this place. No doubt the food is tasty and the place is packed.I felt the cost of the food to be a little more as compared to other places. You can try their buffet.

by S.W. C. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,160

Went here for the first time for lunch. THe place was packed. That is usually a good sign and truly was. The buffet was fresh and varied. We ordered from the menu also and everything was sizzling hot. Very good food! I will return!

No Good Indian Food Here, Anymore. Go to MUMTAZ, instead.

by Llalalois

No!No!No! The best Indian food restaurant in Dallas changed owners and the food is really bad now. : ( I've been going there for 20 years-- and I was shocked the last time I set foot in there. EVERYTHING had changed and not for the better! The sauces were terrible, they couldn't make samosas, they don't know how to cook Indian and the chicken was a really low quality stringy greasy dark meat. The old owners went to Richardson at Campbell and Central and opened a new restaurant called MUMTAZ-- and it is wonderful. Worth the drive, go and see them for authentic Indian food and super service.

Pros: Location

Cons: Food

Great food and nice atmosphere

by DammitJanet

We took my daughter to Taj Mahal for her birthday, having never been before, and we were all very impressed! The service was great, and the food was really wonderful. The Chicken Tikka Masala was so good. Also try the Chicken Madras and of course the kheer for dessert. Yummy! We went at 8 PM on a Friday nite and didn't have to wait for a table. Parking was a snap due to the 'strip center' location.

Indian food without going to India.

by legacy1114

Taj Mahal has changed ownership. The food quality is no longer good. The old owner's opened a restaurant called Mumtaz The food at Mumtaz is excellent and the food recommendations below remain the same!

Chicken Tikka Masala, Shajahani Biryani, Naan, Puri, and to finish off the perfect meal, gulab jamun for dessert! Only the Naan is on the buffet (generally served at lunch), sometimes the julab jamun, but it is definitely worth going a la carte!

Outstanding Sunday Dinner Buffet

by prince_vampyre

Indian cuisine is one of my favorites and Taj Mahal showcases it well on its Sunday night buffet. The Chicken Tika will warm your heart and taste buds. The Sag Paneer was creamy, never letting any single ingredient overpower. Try the Madras spup it is heavenly. The thing impressing my the most was the Naan bread. Usually on a buffet the Naan gets dried out and hard. Here the Naan was as fresh as if you had just ordered it yourself. The price is not too bad for an area buffet. The service is excellent. My tea glass was never less than half full. The only draw back I personally can see is lack of booths and the restaurant is not very large, but in a way, that adds to the cozy feeling.

Pros: Sunday dinner buffet, Central location, Outstanding service

Cons: No booths, Limited seating

Average + indian restaurant

by atupinamba

We went with a group of coleagues for dinner. The food was good, ok for the price. The restaurant is simple, and does not have enough air circulation, so the food smell in the restaurant is strong.

Pros: food, price, good parking

Cons: food smell

Great buffet.

by perrystokes

I've been to Taj Mahal several times now for their lunch buffet and have never been disappointed. The traffic has always been high enough that you're certain the food on the buffet line is fresh.

$10 for a buffet lunch (w/ drink & tip) struck me as high at first, but I'm new to Dallas, and I've never hesitated to go back.

I've yet to try something off the menu, but I'm sure that when I do I won't be disappointed.

Pros: fresh, hot

Cons: no booths
