The Scene
Oversized murals of Japanese warriors grace the wall behind a 25-foot sushi bar where Deep Ellum revelers watch colorful chefs roll, slice and shape pieces. The 25 tables are close together, and people gather in every available space around the mahogany bar on weekends drinking Sapporo and sake while waiting for one. For the best service, sit at the sushi bar; waitstaff can get busy.

The Food
This is a local favorite because it offers so many menu options, from traditional mackerel sashimi and salmon rolls to beef teriyaki and buckwheat soba noodles. Appetizer chicken tempura is tender, with a crisp fried crust covered in sweet sauce. Many sushi rolls are Americanized and big crowd-pleasers, like the Philadelphia roll with smoked salmon, cream cheese and avocado, and the spider roll with fried soft-shell crab, cucumber and avocado. Fried banana tempura with sticky honey sauce is a decadent finish.

not great

by alex32187

I went here on a lunch date and our server was great, but the sushi was awful. The sushi was dry and warm. It was definitely not fresh. The spider roll was burnt and I could tell they tried to re-batter the crab so you couldn't see how it was black underneath. I was really disappointed, especially for the price. Unless you're going for the drink specials, there are MUCH better sushi places to go in Dallas within a 5 mile radius.

Pros: great service

Cons: horrible sushi

Best Sushi in the DFW!!

by argmedrano1

I've been to just about every sushi joint in the DFW from Chaucers to Blue Fish, to Nandinas....the list can go on and on, but none compare to the quality and service at Deep Sushi. The minute I walk in I'm greeted by several employees, from the host to the bartender and even the owner. The atmosphere is extemely relaxed and the music is awesome. The food is to die for! I no longer have to order off the menu, I simply tell the waitor what I like or what I'm craving and they know exactly what to make. Never have I been disappointed, but surprised that every visit becomes more satisfying! I simply adore this place, and most importantly the food! In the past I've been skeptical about recommending sushi places, but I can definitely, without a doubt recommend Deep Sushi to all my sushi loving friends and family. Not once have they been disappointed, even those who are trying sushi for the first time. What can I say, I simply adore this place.

Overrated

by enheduanna

I really don't understand how Deep Sushi has gotten such high ratings. I can only assume that these patrons don't know any better. We usually only patronize Blue Fish in North Dallas, but the reviews were good and we were going to a show downtown, so my boyfriend and I decided to use the Citysearch coupon and dine in last night.

We sat at the sushi bar, since we usually have a good time with our sushi chefs. Drink service was very slow, and we got our first plate of sushi before we had our beers. The first plate of nigiri had a hot chili sauce garnish, and my boyfriend requested that the chef omit anything spicy from our remaining orders. When our Ahi Tower came out, it was swimming in spicy sesame oil, so we sent it back. They said that there was no hot chili sauce in it, only spicy sesame oil. They didn't seem to understand that we didn't want anything spicy, and they were less than courteous about it!

We finally got our Ahi Tower, but after becoming intimately familiar with the same dish from Blue Fish, we were extremely disappointed - Deep Sushi's version is underwhelmingly small (about half the size) and bland, and they apparently depend on the spiciness of the oil to mask the blase-ness of the dish.

For rolls, we ordered an Alaskan roll and a Deep roll, which were okay, but miniature in comparison to what we get at Blue Fish for the same price. I'm used to pieces so big that they are a challenge to eat in one bite, but these were closer to supermarket sushi size. There were such small portions of fish in the Deep roll that they couldn't even all be identified, and we weren't sure if everything that should have been in it was in it.

All in all we were very disappointed with our experience, and will be sticking with Blue Fish from now on.

Pros: the beer was cold

Cons: terrible value and service

The best service and sushi in dallas!

by wendyyork

Wow! Have you had deep sushi?s sushi yet? I was not a big sushi fan until I came to deep sushi. They have won me over! I had the California roll as all sushi amateurs start with, they then offered me something a little more on the sushi daring side, with a spicy tuna dish, then came a crawfish and jalapeno sushi dish with a spicy sauce on a mound of rice , volcano??? Not sure what it was called but this sushi dish was my favorite! If you are not a sushi fan the tempura from the bento box was out of this world too! You really have to try this sushi restaurant. They are in Deep Ellum on Elm street and have free parking on the street till 7pm daily. Tell them wendy sent you and you want the ?mess? ( that?s what I called it :) ) and they will know what you mean. They have excellent service too! The owner also has daily specials that are excellent! Go deep now!

Pros: They made a sushi fan out of me!!!!

Cons: none

A guest made my drink- Laughable Service

by jjadms

I also went here for Valentine's Day but I had a bad experience. Only a few of the tables received roses- it totally depended on who your server was. My date asked our server if I could have a rose and the server told him he could get it himself in front! How rude! When the sushi arrived, we asked our server for soy sauce, but it never came to the table so we had to share with the table next to us. The servers were so frantic that a couple eating in the restaurant got up and actually started busing tables and bar tending! That's right- our drinks were made by fellow guests in the restaurant. Is that even legal? The servers were so overwhelmed they didn't even care- they were taking these drinks to the tables not knowing if they were right or who these people even were. As for the sushi, I've definitely had better at Blue Fish, Asian Mint, and Nobu. If you have your heart set on eating here, I just hope you're one of the lucky ones because at this place, it's definitely a gamble.

Cons: Service, Sushi

BEST SUSHI EVER!!!

by rsdutcher

We were visiting the area and stumbled upon the best SUSHI we've ever had in not on Dallas, TX but in the United States!!! We travel 15-20 days a month and have eaten Sushi in small towns and big cities but never had the experience that DEEP SUSHI provided. The presentation was amazing. Each dish was served like a fine piece of art. Then it quickly disappeared as a new favorite. We did not order anything. We let the owner surprise us with his masterpieces and that is exactly what he did. Everything from the volcano roll (which actually looked like an exploding volcano) to the nice Tuna Appetizers. It all tasted fresh and had sauces that went perfectly with the dish. I highly recommend DEEP SUSHI. I will make a point of visiting them any time I'm in Dallas.

Best Sushi in Dallas

by pepper52286

I went there for Valentine's Day last night. I was greeted with a rose at the front door, which was a nice touch to the start of my experience there. The food was awesome, the fish was fresh and my date enjoyed his beef teriyaki. My favorite was the sashimi special, which had three slices each of four different sashimi's, a citrus sauce, and some jalapenos to add some kick. Although it was a busy night, the waitstaff was friendly and made sure that I was attended to. I enjoyed the music and the variety of cocktails and sake that they offer. Overall it was a great experience and I enjoyed the atmosphere and would recommend it to anyone.

Pros: Friendly wait staff, fresh fish, music

Cons: busy (understandable since it was valentine's day though)

terrible service and overpriced, bland food

by joanluk

i have been to this place TWICE- that's right- i gave it a second shot- and both times, the service and food were simply awful. both times, we waited around for someone to come seat us before having to go up to a server who was just standing around and asking for a table. both times our order was wrong- both the sushi and drinks were not what we ordered and it wasn't easy trying to get the server to take it off the ticket either because they don't want to waste anything. the server would just try to convince us to keep it instead of removing the item immediately as they should have done. i eat a lot of sushi and at this place, the fish is just so bland- it can't be sushi grade, the way it tastes. the sushi in my college cafeteria was better. i asked to speak to the manager at the end of the second meal and he wouldn't come out from behind the sushi bar- he said he was too busy (the restaurant was half full and there were other sushi chefs present). i don't care if i get that kind of service at at a lunch joint, but when you're paying $40/person, you expect service and respect, right? don't waste your time and money.

Cons: service, food, management, parking

good sushi-- but not the best in Dallas

by sooner83

I really love the atmosphere here and it is a great place to go if you are near deep ellum. I am a sushi snob and I love the sushi here. The only place I like better is Blue Fish. The fish here is fresh and the rolls are nice and small (not small portions, but small bites). It is pretty affordable as well. But, the servers tend to be a bit rude and slow. It is a good place to go with a group as well.

Pros: good sushi, nice atmosphere

Cons: sometimes snotty waiters, not as good as blue fish sushi

What a find!

by mikeepc

I'm from California and consider myself pretty picky when it comes to Sushi. I travel all over the world on business, and I make it a habit NOT to order sushi unless I'm on the coast; however, a client of mine in Dallas was insistent that we come to Deep Sushi, and now I'm going to have to reconsider my philosophy entirely!

We went there last Wednesday (the 15th), and while it was still early evening, the place had a great vibe to it - much different than other sushi restaurants I've been to. It's hard to explain, but it was friendly without being to kitzchy and edgy but not offputting. The service was prompt and efficient. We had a fairly large party and they kept the service flowing beautifully.

We ordered the Deep Ellum boat. What struck me immediately was how fresh everything was. I wasn't expecting that in Dallas! The Volcano roll was my favorite, but there was hardly anything that I didn't really like.

Bottom line - I go to Dallas regularly and I'm looking forward to my next visit to my "find" in the Metroplex!

Pros: Food, Ambience, Close to Downtown

Cons: Parking

Horrible Service

by justme29

I went there on Monday night (7/2/07). The place was empty, except for two tables. We ordered only like 4 rolls. The waiter was awful and rude. The food took an hour. After sitting there 30 minutes the waiter said it would be out in five minutes, but he took another 30.

Went during happy hour, damn expensive too. Nothing special, except for maybe the mushroom sushi. Will not go back ever.

Pros: mushroom sushi

Cons: service was slow, expensive, rude waiter

Not worth the money, much better sushi places in town

by webra

Went late on Friday night. We were the only people there. The Sushi chef was a novice - he might have even been the kitchen help. I think I could have made it better. The rolls fell apart and the dishes look klunky. Food was fresh but ordinary. Everything was BLAND. Won't go again.

Pros: Open late on weekends

Cons: Bland, poorly executed sushi

Good food, Good service, Great environment

by staceychick

I took my fiance there for his birthday. I made reservations earlier in the week. We had no problem finding the location or finding parking. Our table was ready right when we walked in the door. The service was great and the food was even better. My fiance enjoyed a lot of yummy sushi. The pieces were big and the pricing was reasonable. I do not eat sushi so I had chicken. The chicken was good and it came with rice and vegetables. For dessert we had the fried bananas with red bean ice cream. It was VERY good! And they gave it to us free since it was my fiances birthday. I would definatly recommend Deep Sushi. The environment was great for talking, the music was not too loud. If you want a more one on one eating go to deep sushi. Sometimes it is hard to talk in big restaurants because the music is so loud and it is so busy inside. Deep Sushi was very relaxed and not "busy" at all.

Pros: Quiet environment, good sushi, decent prices

Cons: None

What happend to Deep Sushi?

by kmsofdallas

I moved to Dallas in 2004. When I found Deep Sushi shortly after I moved here I was very excited. No Sushi resturant in Dallas was even comparable to my favorite resturant (Tokyo in Beaumont, TX). The Sushi at Deep Sushi was AMAZING with its very fresh fish and large portions at an affordable price for Dallas. However, at about the beginning of 2006 I believe there was a change in management. The portions gradually grew smaller and the prices higher. I was so disapointed at a recent visit when a VERY rude waitress proceeded to tell me that one of my favorite dishes (Seafood soup) was not on the menu nor had it ever been. I knew that that was not true beacuse I was a frequent customer and I had orderd that soup almost every time I had been there. She even refused to get the manager!!! I had to find him myself. When I told him of the incident he only said "she is new" and did not apologize for her VERY rude behavior. He wouldn't even get us a new waitress. After that visit I was very hesitant to go back because I believe that a dining experience is more that just tasty food. If the staff makes you feel unwanted and uncared for then it is not worth it! I decided to go again, just to see if perhaps they were havinga bad night. This visit was just as awful. I looked up Deep Sushi online and noted that they did not close until 1am on saturday nights. After a night at the Dallas Art Museum, some friends and I decided to get a late dinner (around 11pm). When we came in the manager (the same one that was rude last time) told us that we needed to hurry and order because they were going to shut down the kitchen. I told him I though they closed at 1am. He said that they closed at 12am but that they would not serve any one after 11pm. I though this odd but ordered anyway. What really got me was when some customers came in about 15 mins after my party did and they told them they had to leave because they already shut down the kitchen! I will not go back!

Pros: good music (for a young crowd), good location, fresh fish

Cons: VERY RUDE staff, high price for such small portions

Sushi good but waaaaaaaay too expensive

by solero10

When I saw a standard Eel roll with Avacado for $9, I was thinking that at least it must be extra large. It was the same size as any other restaurant. The sushi was good but overpriced.

Pros: Sushi tastes good

Cons: Price, neighborhood a little seedy

Best Sushi in Dallas

by pdxbound

I've lived in Dallas for over a year now, and I have tried over 10 different Sushi restaurants in the Metroplex. Deep Sushi is simply the best. The fish is always fresh, servers are always polite, and the atmosphere is very charming. Not to mention the great happy hour (listed above). The closest sushi restaurant to compare would be Blue Fish on Greenville Ave. However, my biggest complaint there is the pieces are enormous and awkward to eat. Deep's are the perfect size. My favorite roll would have to be the Rainbow Roll. And to wrap it all up, the only complaint is the music. They've only played Madonna everytime I've been. Not to hate, but a little different selection would be great.

Pros: service, food, drinks

Cons: music, parking

Great Deep Ellum Spot

by donnaaries

Very good, fresh sushi. And a varied sake selection. I've had better sushi in Dallas, but this is in a convenient location if you're hanging out in Deep Ellum for the night. Server was friendly and very helpful. Watch out, the dragon roll is spicy!

Pros: Fresh Food, Friendly Staff

Cons: Parking

Pretty good, but not "all that"...

by remcycle

I was travelling on business this weekend and stopped in to taste some of the best that Dallas had to offer. I sat down at the bar after being followed through a room with WAY too many tables and found my trusty sushi menu.

I signed up for basic fare: a Spicy Tuna Roll and a Tempura Roll, each moderately priced compared to the cheap Austin digs I'm used to. I received my Spicy Tuna first...and it was very tasty. The rice was a bit underdone and the nori was extremely chewy, but the Tuna had been marinating in a tangy solution that definitely beats anything I've had yet. An underwhelming yet slightly sweet sliver of cucumber topped it off. Next was the Tempura, which was Tempura Shrimp and Avocado rolled up in Nori and sushi rice, covered in Tempura sauce. The tempura sauce was tasty, but seeing the chef nuke my Shrimp in front of me was definitely a turn-off. When I got it, it was "okay". Nothing special, but then again, you can't do much with Tempura and rice. You could add things to the roll, I suppose, but $6.50 buys "basic" in a place like Deep Ellum and I understood that.

All in all, I'd say it was good. That spicy Tuna was some of the best I've ever had, but the undercooked rice and un-moistened Nori really kinda ruined it. The tempura was good, but I've had tempura rolls where not only did the Shrimp come straight out of the oil, but they added other vegetables into the roll making a more distinctive taste. I'd say go with some of the more specialized rolls on the menu. I was on an expense account and couldn't afford too much, but if I went back on my own buck, I'd definitely try some of the more adventurous choices. As I said, it was pretty good and it makes me hungry just thinking about it, but compared to something like Ichiban down here in Austin, it just doesn't come close.

Pros: Pretty neat space to set up a sushi bar in...

Cons: The service was a little bit conceited and the sushi bar took forever considering I was one of three customers.

When I crave sushi, I crave Deep Sushi

by ms_l

When I drive an hour to get here, it is for sushi, so I haven't tried the other things on the menu. Sashimi is my favorite, but dining here with friends has resulted in me trying and absolutely loving their Ruby roll and Deep roll. Rolls at other places I've eaten are simply not as good. The menu is extensive. Parking in Deep Ellum can be a challenge, so expect that if you're not from the area. I've never had to wait for a table but if you are worried about it, go ahead make a reservation.

Great sushi

by daisyrave

Went to try Deep Sushi last week and really enjoyed it. I had been looking for a good sushi place in Dallas and found one! We ordered a variety of sushi, an appetizer and some wine and enjoyed everything.

I have left sushi places before feeling sick and had no problems with Deep Sushi. Everything seemed very fresh.

Would definitely recommend.

Pros: Good sushi, Nice restaurant, Varied menu

Very fair prices for pretty thick raw slices. The owner is really friendly, which makes the atmosphere more pleasant. We went late one Friday night and were the only ones there, which was the bad part because we had to finish quick. Great location, great food, and fair price.
