When the regulars are Latin America natives, you know the food is authentic. This bakery and cafe--done up in orange and canary yellow--is a staple for Oak Lawn residents looking for a break from the Starbucks routine. Diners cozy up in window booths to sip imported coffees, relish merengue cookies and read the paper. Groups sit at long tables to savor a leisurely meal of corn turnovers filled with beef and melted cheese while couples tango to Latin jazz on the hardwood floors. Most leave with churro sticks boxed to go to savor the treats at home.

Key Points

  • Specialties/main courses
  • Pastries, Breads, Cakes
  • Colombian Coffee, Latin Sodas

The Inside Scoop

  1. The Extras - Vegetarian dishes such as cachapas and arepas filled with cheese and veggies are available.
  2. When to Go - The second and fourth Monday of every month is tango night and live Latin fusion is on the first and third Saturday of every month.

¡Great Argentine food! - Zaguán Grill & Café

by Charlotte K.

The food and baked products are always very fresh, constant in quality and flavor, and very professionally served. I recommend this special cafe to everyone. They specialize in Argentine foods and they are 'right on target.' Prices are great for the quality! You won't regret going.

Not impressed

by James D.

I didn't like the entree that I selected, the cachapa. The chicken tasted dry and the plantain chips tasted like dirt. I would not return. The waitress had an attitude as well.

Very quaint...

by SF S. | insider Insider | Rank: 13,701

Zaguan's is great. Although it is an amazing bakery, they also offer a wonderful dinner menu. The dining area is small and intimate. Great date spot. Try it!

Mixed Experience

by Jennifer M. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,569

This bakery and cafe is located in the trendy area on Oak Lawn. The sweet pastries and cakes, especially the chocolate cake, at Zaguan are quite tasty. But my husband ordered a lunch special of rice and chicken, and the chicken tasted very old.

yuck

by L O.

My first try of Zaguan will be my last. The Zaguan sandwich sure looked good, but the meat was dry and old. Like a week old pot roast that sat uncovered in the fridge. The homemade bread was crusty and very good but the meat ruined it. The server noticed the pile of meat left on the plate and when I said it tasted very old and dry she said "sorry" and handed me the check. The manager visited every customer but me.
Go down the street to La Duni instead.

Awesome Breakfast Omlette

by ecagnew

I reside in Austin Texas and was in Dallas for the National PRIMA conference. I ventured over to Zaguan and ate an omlette and had a cup of joe. I had to buy a bag of the coffee to take home it was so good. The omlette was the best I have ever had, and I told the chef that as well.

Great place..............Very Friendly.

Pros: Best Coffee Anywhere

BAD FOOD- period

by jennyc120

I noticed that the restaurant was dirty when we walked in the door- flies hoovering over the breads and deserts...we ordered the Empanadas, which were ok but then everything else was downhill from there. The Latin Crepes are nothing like the menu picture-the chicken in them had a bad taste & it was cheese overkill. The ropa vieja-which was the worst I've ever tried-was salty, and the roll that came with it was tasteless and dry. The deserts also resembled nothing like the photos on their website- they were small, thrown-together deserts that seemed to be there for days. This place is NOT recommended! We will never go back (obviously).

Pros: cant think of any "pros"

Best latin food, "ropa vieja" and "empanadillas" in town.

by Manati

Is a bakery, very interesting and very good breads and pastries. But is also an excellent restaurant. Empanadillas are great. The "ropa vieja" excellent. My wife tried the fish plate and was also excellent. Great coffee. Great prices.

Small location, easy to find, easy parking. Will rate as one of the top two latin restaurants in Dallas.

One of my top two restaurants in DFW. Great place to take friends for a taste of latin food. They have a menu with pictures that is very helpful for those that don't speak spanish or fail to understand what is that delicious "ropa vieja".

And at the end of your visit, you can take some breads and pastries home.

Pros: Great food, ropa vieja, empanadillas, desserts, coffee, price, parking. All plus

Cons: None, is a great place.

Breakfast all day at the best bakery in Dallas!

by wendyyork

This is such a fantastic place! Did you know they serve their D Magazine award winning breakfast dishes all day? You walk in and on the left you can watch the chef pick from an assortment of the freshest ingredients for the dishes he prepares behind a glass wall. On the right are ample seating with free wi-fi and the best ice tea and smiley service you have ever had in a bright sunny dining area. They also have a small patio if you like a little sunshine with your fresh croissant or pastry that they make at the shop. Call for catering or party trays as well, they are fantastic! This is privately owned and operated so don?t be fooled by the polish and perfection of this place, it really is your corner bakery with the Baker directly from Spain.

Pros: Great place and value

Cons: gets full on weekends so go early

The best kept secret for latin cafes

by calgal4u2

Wow, If you haven?t tried the empanadas, go now. I went on the recommendation below and they are fantastic! LOTS of meat in them and the perfect mild blend of not so spicy spices. Their Cachapa was awarded by D magazine for breakfast ( which they serve all day AND D voted them best Latin lunch a few years back. On Citysearch they got the best of in Bakery and once you walk in you will know why. Beautiful pastries and breads all displayed next to the seating area so you can decide what to take home after your meal for that midnight snack. From all of the authentic Latin food places in the Dallas city, this has the largest variety of cakes, pastries, breads and dishes. This really is a must try, I don?t know why more people haven?t written a review on them. Perhaps they want to keep it their secret! Word is out! Go now while you can get a seat!!

Pros: Did you know they have FREE WI FI as well? Great place!

Cons: Easy to pass, it's right after the cosmic cafe on oak lawn

A "gotta try it" place

by JeremyDines

W..H..A..T.....A... ..G..R..E..A..T.....S..P..O..T..! My partner and I just found this amazing place, really really incredible food. We've tried a few dishes - all very delicious - but our favorite is the Cheese and Meat Chachapa. It is a yellow corn based, moist and thick outer "shell" with cheese and meat inside. The sweet and salty play up the taste buds. Its a very savory meal. I like too the chips served with it. I thought it was going to be spicy, but its not. Its simply an amazing new taste. Leave room though - they have an incredible array of desserts and pastries. The exceptional display offers meringes, some cake, and a few other baked goods. One of their breads looks a little unusual but is a loaf of bread with guava baked in. Whatever it is, the food is so incredible. Another treat - there is a "two-fer" coupon in the 2008 Passbook. As if that weren't enough, the staff is extremely pleasant and goes out of their way. A MUST try!

Amazing food and atmosphere

by bek1977

Amazing cafe and bakery located off of Oak Lawn. The owner is extremely friendly and the food and natural juices are amazing. They have wonderful homemade breads and desserts as well as great breakfast food.

If you are in the mood for lunch or dinner, I highly recommend the Cachapa (a sweet-corn turnover filled with shredded beef or chicken and cheese) or the Zaguan Sandwich (shredded beef, sweet onions, homemade bread and cheese). The Arepas are wonderful as well, as are the homemade black beans and plantain chips.

It is our favorite place in Dallas and I highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed!

Pros: Great food, great ownership

Cons: None
