Carmax gave me $1,800 for my '96 Pontiac Sunfire, with about $98k miles on it!
The dealership where I purchased my new Honda would only give me about $600 for the Sunfire, and recommended I take the Carmax deal, as they couldn't come close.
This was a no-brainer - don't leave money on the table - sell your old car to Carmax!
I also checked out their prices on used cars, which gave me solid negotiating knowledge for a great deal on my new car.

Carmax is the best place to buy a used car. You may a couple hundred dollars more, but it is well worth it. No sales managers to tag team you, no 'you must buy this car now to get this deal', no used car salesperson games. You can go online to browse their inventory from any of their stores before you go in.
